MANIKARNIKA - THE QUEEN OF JHANSI has practically finished its run and has lasted around seven weeks at the box office to collect around 90.75 crore nett in its Hindi version.

The opening of the film could have been better as its first was less than 8 crore nett. The first day was in the same range as LUKA CHUPPI and considering the mounting of this film it should have opened better but it managed to hold pretty well post the first week as it added around 35 crore nett and showed good holds in week two and three before it got by the flow of big releases.

The film will have a worldwide total of around 132 crore which is also pretty good for a solo Kangana Ranuat film though is far less than TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS

EK LADKI KO DEKHA TOH AISA LAGA is a FLOP film as it collected 16.50 crore nett in the first week with fast dropping collections on the weekdays. This is no surprise as it was not even about the content as the subject itself was a no no.

The film had a poor start and the game was up on Friday evening itself as the film did not show the evening growth that the smaller films do if they are going have huge weekend growth. The business was a dull across all circuits of India with Delhi/UP being the circuit that out performed a little. This is mainly due to a high concentratation of high end multiplexes in Delhi NCR.

The film was best in US/Canada where the first week will do $800k and it could cross $1 million in that market which is pretty good especially considering how bad it is in India. There is no major competition from Hindi films this week but EK LADKI KO DEKHA TOH AISA LAGA is not going to go much higher than 20 crore nett lifetime business.

MANIKARNIKA - THE QUEEN OF JHANSI (Hindi) dropped 63% in week two which is a pretty good hold. It did see a drop on the second Friday but then held over the rest of the second week. The film now has a decent two week total of 77.50 crore nett and these are good numbers for a solo female lead film and will beat all barring TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS and RAAZI.

Overall the film is an AVERAGE fare though if it maintains a strongly over the next 2 weeks it could go a notch higher. The film has been mainly let down by business in Mumbai circuit especially Gujarat.

The film is looking to finish its second week with a total of 78 crore nett and then the competition this week will be mainly from the Hollywood release ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL and it remains to be seen if this film can open. A good hold on the third Friday can push this film to the 90 crore nett mark.

The performance of the film is generally average or a little better in some circuits but Mumbai has held it back. If some other circuits had been strong then it would matter less as they could have compensated.

MANIKARNIKA - THE QUEEN OF JHANSI managed to do well on its second Saturday and Sunday for a fair total of 13.50 crore nett over the second weekend. This takes the ten day total to 70 crore nett which is decent. Actually the film is pretty if looked at the point of view that it is just a solo Kangana Ranuat starrer. The only issue is the cost is high compared to other Kangana Ranuat films and other female driven films.

The drop on the second Friday hit the film. If the film had grown the way it has from a higher second Friday number then this film may have chances of being an outright HIT. The film has not done well in Mumbai especially Gujarat as these films have to work in the two big circuits because of limitations in smaller centres of female driven films.

As these films struggle to open in the smaller cities there is always a limit to how much they can pick up. The bigger cities can pick up far more.

The final number will be a good one for a female driven film beating all the films barring TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS and RAAZI leaving with Kangana Ranaut with two out of the top three. The only difference is that no other female driven film has gone over 50 crore in terms of costs while this one is way over.

The problem becomes even if you go over in terms of costs the initial is still difficult unless backed by a combination of action and music and for a female driven film this probably has to be thought out cleverly and cant be done in the regular way like for the hero driven actioners. MANIKARNIKA - THE QUEEN OF JHANSI despite the bigger canvas could not push the initial much higher than other female driven films.

MANIKARNIKA - THE QUEEN OF JHANSI (Hindi) showed a fall in business of 25-30% on its second Friday as the reports finally caught up with the film. Despite the public response being not so good the film was still in with a chance of being a HIT as somehow it held up on the weekdays.

But on the second Friday it had to drop 5-10% from the Thursday and there was a good chance due to the weak competition but it was not to be and the film dropped much more. The film has a total of a little under 60 crore nett in eight days and is now looking to emerge an AVERAGE fare at best if it holds over the next 10-15 days or so.

It is a pretty good result for a solo Kangana Ranaut starrer though not for the cost. Also when a film changes directors while in making there is always a good chance the product is not going to what it should be and that is probably why the film has not found much appreciation.

The weekdays have actually held well especially considering the response to the film from the audience is not so good. So despite the limited appreciation the film has managed to fair business at the box office but the question is can it continue this way. The collections in Mumbai circuit on Thursday are less than 1 crore nett which is very low and its possible the film will see further drops in the second week. Its Delhi/UP which is holding the film and its collecting more than Mumbai circuit.

The second Friday is crucial for the film as there is a chance the film can still emerge a HIT if it holds strongly but  it will be tough considering the public reports.

But eventually the word of mouth will catch up as the collections are low in key areas and what happens normally is other places do catch up and whether its on the second Friday or after only time will tell.

The collections so far are around 53 crore nett so the week will be finish at around 56.5-57 crore nett. So till date the business of the film is decent boosted by the Republic Day holiday. There is weak competition this week so the film should continue to hold well technically but the reports are going to catch up at some point and a drop will come.

Delhi/UP remains the best market with the UP side being very steady and some centers in the state registering better collections than day one.

It collected 4.25 crore on Tuesday to take its five day total to 49 crore nett. The film would have been struggling if Tuesday had fallen 10-15% but this drop keeps the film in the race especially as there is limited competition in week two.

If the film can keep the drops in the 5-10% range over the next two days it would be a pretty good trend over the weekdays. The first week is looking to be 56-57 crore nett which looks decent enough but when you factor in the big Republic Day holiday the collections are on the lower side.

The film is looking to do AVERAGE business and it will the second Friday which could change this either for the better or ever for worse.

The film has managed to do decent business at the box office till date thanks to the big national holiday. The problem for the film is more that the appreciation is limited and eventually that will tell on the collections at some point. The film was doing better in the North over the weekend but on Monday there are cracks in the cities of Punjab and many cinemas of Delhi city while UP was rock steady. Gujarat saw collections at a very low level.

The advantage of the film is that it does not have much competition over the next two weeks which should help but it will only be to a certain extent.

But despite getting the weekend collections that appreciation is not there in some parts like Maharashtra, Gujarat and Nizam while the weekdays will tell about the other places.

The collections are no doubt good for a film which has Kangana Ranuat as the only face who is not a huge star but the question for such a film is always appreciation and going on after the weekend. But looking at the weekend trend that is surely missing in some areas and there is a question in other places which will be answered over the next few days..

TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS had grossed 37.50 crore nett over its first weekend which were the highest first weekend collections for a female driven film and now MANIKARNIKA - THE QUEEN OF JHANSI has eclipsed that film. The film was also released in Tamil and Telugu but that like the case with most Hindi films barring a couple hardly returned any numbers.

The Monday business is crucial for the film and it cannot afford to have that normal 50% drop from day one and the hope will be that places like Delhi/UP, East Punjab, Rajasthan, CP Berar and CI hold up strongly on Monday and have a steady run for a couple of weeks.

The other places like Mumbai and Nizam/Andhra could be steady on low collections but it will be a struggle to holding in the longer run in these circuits.

MANIKARNIKA - THE QUEEN OF JHANSI (Hindi) was below the mark on day one as it collected around 7.50-8 crore nett on day one. The film was a wide release with over 3000 screens but was unable to penetrate the mass with collections mainly coming from the bigger multiplexes

The film should have done much better in places like UP, MP and Rajasthan but these places had disappointing collections. Mumbai, Gujarat and South were always likely to have lower collections so it is not really surprising that these places have not collected well. The best collections for the film have come in Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida belt.

The first day number is still fair if we look at it from the point of heroine driven films but considering the cost of the film the film really needed a double digit or higher first day number. Despite the scale there was limited face value and no music which has probably affected the initial of the film.

There is the big holiday on Saturday which will push up the collections but from this level its unlikely the film can do what it should be doing on a big national holiday. The crunch will be Sunday when the film will have to show collections matching or even going higher than the national holiday depending on where the Republic Day figures land.

The other major release of the week THACKERAY grossed around 2.75-3 crore nett in Hindi with bulk of the collections coming from Mumbai circuit. The collections were pretty dull outside Mumbai circuit with collections getting worse further North you went. Like a Gurgaon or Noida were better compared to a Amritsar or Jammu.

The film will will only really have chances in Maharashtra but if it is to go anywhere then the film really has to show a big turnaround in collections in Delhi/UP. When a film can score in Mumbai and Delhi/UP then it always be at least reasonable business even on a worse case scenario.

The Republic Day holiday will also help push this film but the real story will be post the holiday. The film was also released in Marathi which had good numbers and could cross 2 crore nett in this format.

The growth on the second day is a huge 125-130% though a lot of this growth is down to the national holiday and Sunday will tell actually how big this growth was.

The growth has come all over on the second day with Delhi/UP and the central markets leading the way with good collections with a little under performance in Mumbai and South but that is sort of expected. THACKERAY is providing competition in Mumbai circuit especially as there is a Marathi version.

The next two days will be crucial for MANIKARNIKA - THE QUEEN OF JHANSI (Hindi) as although these collections are very good for a female driven film it is also a far bigger film than other female driven films.

THACKERAY is doing very well in Marathi but the Hindi version is not good. There was growth on day two but not the sort that is required on a national holiday. The Hindi version only really has chances in Maharashtra and Mumbai and Pune to be specific and the growth was far less than MANIKARNIKA - THE QUEEN OF JHANSI in these two cities despite the film collecting at lower levels.

The Marathi version of the film is very strong and will probably turn out to be one of the bigger Marathi films outside their historic blockbuster SAIRAT. The screenings for the Hindi version are being shifted to Marathi in many cities of Maharashtra.
