There have been these four films in the last 4-5 months which have basically looked like a family and cousins of each other and normally you would expect one member of the family to pass but that's not the rule in this side of the film industry as all the family members flopped and saw total rejection.

The similarities in these films were huge as all were female lead with ridiculously bad trailers which offered nothing and on top seemed to be pushing some social awareness message. But the problem becomes with this sort of Netflix cinema is that you don't have any reach to push whatever social awareness you want to show and on top the audience may not want to understand from you anyway as there are other better ways to learn than from cinema.

The fact these films came up in just a few months is a surprise which probably means that a part of the industry probably sees female driven films as the way forward. But its never about female or male driven films but about good films. The other side of the industry will believe its difficult to make good female driven films but that's not the case either as a MOTHER INDIA and HUM AAPKE HAI KOUN stand with the male testosterone driven SHOLAY and GADAR as historic blockbusters in Hindi cinema.

Recently there has been THE DIRTY PICTURE and TANU WEDS MANU series which not only scored at the box office but also post their release on satellite. The big difference between these films and the family which we have seen in the last few months is entertainment. If entertainment is there then the audience will not even look if its female driven or male driven. There has also been MARDAANI 2 which is a female film but that was simplistic with a protagonist v antagonist theme which will reach a wider audience therefore getting some numbers.

The final domestic, overseas and worldwide results of this family which flopped together is as follows. The numbers tell the story of the rejection be it domestic or overseas.

It was a shortened week as all cinemas shut on Tuesday while at places cinemas has started to shut Friday. This affected all releases but the biggest casualties were ANGREZI MEDIUM and BAAGHI 3. The other films were towards the end of their respective runs and were collection in lakhs only.

ANGREZI MEDIUM collected just 9.35 crore nett apprx in week one and the film is a total goner as the film got unlucky as it got hit in the first weekend. The film could add some business when cinemas reopen but it will depend on the competition at the time. But with a under 10 crore nett week, there is nowhere the film can go.

BAAGHI 3 had a huge fall in week two as it collected just 6 crore nett in week two to take its total to 92.75 crore nett. Going by the Friday number and adding Delhi and Kerala to the Friday number number, it would have been a 17 crore nett week for the film if all went normal. This would have been a comfortable 100 crore nett plus film if the run did not get cut short.

THAPPAD also had a huge fall in week three as it collected under 50 lakhs nett. If it was a normal week then the film could have collected around 1.75 crore nett which would have been enough to take it over 30 crore nett but hardly makes a difference to the final result of the film.

THAPPAD collected 20 lakhs nett on Friday and there was a 5 lakh loss due to Delhi city not playing the film (it was hardly running in Jammu or Kerala). So basically this is a concept film doing 25 lakhs on the third Friday but there were still posters going around how the film had done very well and claiming a 30 crore nett plus figure well before the second week was out.

The claim of 30 crore nett is not a problem as 5-10 % inflation is there for most films but the doing well thing is laughable. The audience verdict has to accepted and that is the only way you can go forward because if you start believing crap like THAPPAD has been liked by the audience then you will do more crap like this. It was labelled the most important film whatever that is supposed to mean but again its the audience who makes it important or not and with only 19.5 lakh people turning up to watch the film they have pretty much said it holds no importance.

The success of the film may be claimed as it would have made money due to satellite and digital but that is case with almost every Hindi film which gets a decent release today. The makers of JAWAANI JAANEMAN and BHOOT: PART ONE – THE HAUNTED SHIP can claim the same thing but that still will not make those films liked or even a success with the audience.

Basically 25 lakhs nett (real value) on the third Friday for a concept which has not opened tells the story as concept films should be sustaining on the third Friday not dropping like nine pins. The industry you cant fool and today the most of the public is too clever to believe rubbish like THAPPAD is a HIT so the only only people you can fool are yourselves and you media friends who if they believe its an important film will also believe anything else.

THAPPAD collected a low 8.50 crore nett in its second week though this is better than it looked on Friday due to Holi but post Holi the film pretty much came down to the expected low levels. The film has collected 29.25 crore nett in two weeks and the second week drop is 60% with Holi when these types have to be doing under 50% without a holiday week as they open so low.

The film has beaten the likes of SAAND KI AANKH and PANGA and is around 3 crore nett behind CHHAPAAK which it may reach. But the highest film in this zone was MARDAANI 2 with around 45 crore nett which is impossible for THAPPAD and MARDAANI 2 was the only successful film of this lot.

THAPPAD got good Holi benefit on Tuesday and collected 1.50 crore nett which takes its total to 28.25 crore nett. The film has been boosted a little by the Holi period over the last two days and it might be able to do a second week of 9 crore nett.

The total collections of the film still remain low and the film has been rejected but if it can hand around for the next two or three weeks it may just about get a little respectable final number. The killer for the film was the weekday numbers in week one as its these which make or break these small films.

THAPPAD collected a poor 5 crore nett in its second weekend though the collections were better than the likes of BHOOT: PART ONE – THE HAUNTED SHIP and CHHAPAAK in the second weekend but that is not really a plus as those films did better numbers in the first week. In the final run THAPPAD is looking at similar lifetime numbers to BHOOT: PART ONE – THE HAUNTED SHIP and CHHAPAAK.

The collections so far for the film are around 25.75 crore nett and it will be the third week when this film gets in the 30 crore nett range unless Holi gives it a good boost and it can repeat this Sunday business on Holi day. The Sunday growth was a bit of a surprise as normally these films don;t grow much on Sunday. This was probably down to two things with one being generally better growth this Sunday and secondly THAPPAD seems to have block bookings at one or two multiplex chains though this will hardly change the fate of the film.

THAPPAD managed to show better collections on Monday than Friday as it probably got the benefit of evening shows being stronger in the metros as its a holiday for Holi on Tuesday. The film collected around 1 crore nett on Monday which takes the film to 26.75 crore nett after 11 days.

The film could now get close to the 30 crore nett mark before the end of the week if it can get the Holi benefit over the next few days. It also has a chance of crossing the business of CHHAPAAK which finished with 32.54 crore nett though that would hardly change the fate of the film. It has done better than PANGA and SAAND KI AANKH but that is not really a tough task.

THAPPAD saw 85% growth on its second Saturday as it collected around 1.65 crore nett. This takes the 11 day numbers of the film to almost 23.50 crore nett. The second Friday drop of 67% was a killer for the film and probably ensured the film had no chance of even a respectable final number. If the drop was 50%, then maybe this film could have gone towards the 35 crore nett mark.

The film is now playing on low occupancy all over. The film had done okay in NCR for a few days but unlike a SHUBH MANGAL ZYADA SAAVDHAN which held on there for almost two weeks, this one is unable to that. The film is probably heading for lifetime business similar to BHOOT: PART ONE – THE HAUNTED SHIP though it will be a task to hit the numbers of CHHAPAAK. Not that its an achievement competing with these films as they did not do well.

The much raved film (by media) THAPPAD, which was actually called the most important film ever made in India on release, has been given a tight slap by the audience. These sort of gimmicks actually deserve this sort of treatment from the audience. The film has been totally rejected everywhere with even metro cities recording not so good collections.

The film did look bad from the trailers much like its predecessors like SAAND KI AANKH, CHHAPAAK and PANGA but sometimes metros do take to these type of films if they like the content but no such thing happened here. The film collected under 1 crore nett on its second Friday and its probably going to finish around the 30 crore nett mark. The film may have been affected a little by the corona virus news but that will be around 10-15 lakhs only and hardly alters its fate.

THAPPAD collected a poor 21 crore nett apprx in its first week. The collections are low but that is not really the problem as its expected but the issue is that the film has not really held up well enough on the weekdays. These films depend on the weekday business and must hold steady and go forward in week two but it has not happened here.

CHHAPAAK had collected 26.23 crore while PANGA was 15.25 crore and another family member SAAND KI AANKH was 11.58 crore. The difference between these films and THAPPAD is that THAPPAD was a solo release while the others had competition from a bigger film. The film needs to do a double digit second week or near for a decent final result.

THAPPAD dropped 10% on its first Wednesday as it collected 1.75 crore nett. It is a normal drop for Wednesday and actually maybe better than normal for a Wednesday but the problem is that the film cannot really afford to have any drops.

The film needed to hold out in the 2 crore nett range on the weekdays till Thursday to have an outside chance of success and now that is out of the window. The film has yet to reach 20 crore nett after six days and has collected 19.50 crore nett so far. The week should finish at 21.50 crore nett which is lower than CHHAPAAK (26.23 crore) but better than PANGA (15.25 crore). It makes the second best performer of this family and being second best of a dud family is hardly an achievement.

THAPPAD collected 2 crore nett apprx on Tuesday which is similar to Monday but the collections of the film are low and it seems to fighting a losing battle. The only hope is that it stays at these levels till Thursday and then has a minimal drop on the second Friday when BAAGHI 3 releases. Even if this somehow happens and it gets a 10 crore nett plus second week, it can still only be average.

The problem is that the occupancy is low across the country on the weekdays and the film has been rejected and when that happens its just getting the best numbers possible and a respectable final total. The first week business of the film looks to be heading towards 21 crore nett which is 20% lower than the first week of CHHAPAAK.

THAPPAD had a drop in collections of 30% on Monday which is not a huge drop but this sort of film needs to hold better on Monday if it is do well. The film collected 2 crore nett on apprx taking its four day total to 15.75 crore nett.

The first week collections of the film will probably be around 21 crore nett and then with BAAGHI 3 coming, it will probably be a struggle to get 30 crore nett. The film will do better than the likes of PANGA and SAAND KI AANKH but that is no achievement because these films were crap and that is putting it kindly. It is likely to stay below CHHAPAAK which was as bad. The fact that THAPPAD has just one week before BAAGHI 3 meant it had to do stronger business in week one because after that,  it is going to be an uphill task.

THAPPAD had a poor weekend of 13.75 crore nett but the growth on Sunday which was around 30% has give it a chance. Saturday had growth of 70% plus and that is pretty much normal but Sunday growth is pretty good for this type of film.

The film is sure to do better than films like PANGA and SAAND KI AANKH and maybe can even beat CHHAPAAK but even beating CHHAPAAK is not really a result. The Monday hold is very important and it really needs to be near the Friday number for a decent final result. The Sunday growth gives the film a chance of that though even if it gets that, it needs to hold through the week as on Friday there will be a drop due to BAAGHI  3.

THAPPAD managed to show good growth of 70% on Saturday to collect 5 crore nett. The growth is good but its difficult to tell what Saturday growth means today for films at these levels. A few years ago this sort of growth would mean a winner but nowadays all this means is that it keeps the film in the running.

The two day numbers of the film are 7.50-7.75 crore nett which is low but it can make up for this on the weekdays. The collections are best in Delhi NCR and Mumbai could have grown more as day one was not so strong. The film has very limited reach of metros and even that looks like all metros are not going to be on side. If NCR can sustain well,  then it maybe enough for the film as the costs are not high. But a lot depends on Monday which has to be close to the Friday number of the film.

If we look at the Saturday growth of similar films then PANGA went up 108% on Saturday and CHHAPAAK went up 40% and both films failed and more importantly did not sustain after the weekend. This film is a cousin of those films and it remains to be seen what is the fate of this film and the minimum target should be to beat the higher grossing cousin CHHAPAAK.

THAPPAD had a poor first day as it collected 2.75- 3 crore nett though it was better than the likes of PANGA and SAAND KI AANKH. The collections are mainly from Delhi NCR as that area including the NCR centres of East Punjab like Gurgaon and Faridabad are over 80 lakhs nett. These collections are from just 100 theatres.

The film will need good pick up in places like Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore to have any chance of doing well and this pick up could come on Saturday but whether it can last after that is another story. The film looked devoid of entertainment and music so on those accounts its not too bad of a number but on the other side it had those early four star reviews coming well before release which can help collections at these low levels.

Its going to be Monday when it will known that are these reviews any close to reality or like normal when they try to push certain films no matter how bad they may be.
