Harbhajan Singh likes to bathe the kids, play with them and spend quality time-Geeta Basra
2:32 PM
Posted by Fenil Seta

In 2008, British-born Bollywood actor Geeta Basra jokingly told her then boyfriend Harbhajan Singh that she would marry him only if he claimed 300 wickets in Test cricket. The acclaimed spinner attained this milestone within days, and she kept her promise. Basra, who took a break after embracing motherhood in 2016, recently returned to the silver screen with the Punjabi film ‘Mehar’. She spoke to Sidhi Kapoor about mom-guilt and the challenges of raising two kids
Sidhi Kapoor (THE TIMES OF INDIA; May 11, 2026)
What’s the one thing that used to stress you out before kids that feels silly now?
When you transition into certain chapters of your life, you become more prudent. Earlier, I was young, restless and ambitious. Even now, I am ambitious, but not in the rat race. I am more content and happier with what I have. When you are younger, you stress about small things. After having a family, priorities change. That’s how we mothers learn to balance our home, professional and personal life.
Did your parenting style change with your second child?
You go by the book with the first child. You don’t want to do anything wrong. Everything is documented. With the second child, you are at ease and just going with the flow. Besides, both children have such different personalities. You can’t expect the way of raising the first to continue for the second one. I have to be a very different mother with both kids.
Which of the two kids is more like you?
Hinaya (9) is very calm, reserved and sensitive, like a ‘girlie girl’. Jovan (4) is very affectionate like me. I also love to express and show affection. Jovan will kiss and hug all the time. Both kids have traits from both parents. At the same time, I want them to carve their own identity. I want Hinaya to be so fearless that she can express her opinion in front of anyone. I want Jovan to be chivalrous, kind and empathetic.
You were raised in the UK and Harbhajan in Punjab. What’s one tradition from your childhood that you consider non-negotiable for your kids?
Jovan was born in Mumbai. Hinaya was born in the UK. We never lost touch with our culture. On my birthday, we hosted a Sukhmani Sahib paath. We follow the spiritual path and we are very much in touch with our Hindu roots. But we also celebrate Christmas in a big way. We believe in tooth fairies and all things magical that I was raised with. Our traditions and festivities should not be lost while raising children.
What’s the one piece of parenting advice you got that actually worked, and one that you threw out immediately?
I believe a discipline chart is important. One needs to follow a routine to channelize the energy of children. Having said that, each mother has her own way of raising children. Like in north India, kids usually take bath in the morning, but my children bathe in the evening after a massage. People used to keep asking why I do this and I had to explain that this helps them sleep peacefully. So, there are certain things I follow as per my belief and understanding.
Screen time is every parent’s biggest struggle. How are you navigating it?
I am quite a strict parent. I don’t give them screen time at all during weekdays. On weekends, they are allowed screens for a short while to watch a movie or something. They don’t get gadgets during meal time either. My kids know rules are rules and they have to follow them, no matter what.
So, screen time is sorted in your case. So, what’s your toughest parenting battle right now?
The age gap is a challenge. They have different interests and they fight a lot. Both are very attached to me and want my attention. Even in a flight, both want me to sit next to them. At bedtime, both want extra time with me. It is very hard as a parent to deal with this. Sometimes, I feel I should cut myself in two halves (laughs). But then you love those moments too. It’s all about balancing during such times.
Tell us about your most difficult ‘mom-guilt’ moment and how you talked yourself out of it?
For five years, I never left my daughter alone. She used to accompany me for shoots. Once, I had to leave her for a month. It was very hard and emotional. When I am working, Bhajji is at home with the kids. I feel relieved that one parent is with them. It’s also his time to bond with them. I want the kids to see that their mom is following her dreams and wants to achieve them. Moms should not let their passion or drive diminish. Obviously, I choose and pick what’s important in terms of work.
Bhajji’s been a rockstar on the field. What’s his most underrated dad skill?
He is very good with the kids. I know some fathers don’t spend quality time with their kids, but Bhaji is very involved. He likes to bathe the kids, play with them and spend quality time. We both have equal responsibility as parents, and he understands it so well. Kids understand that we both bring different things to the table. Both parents have to be present in the parenting journey to raise confident, secure children.
Who’s the stricter parent and who’s soft?
I am strict and Bhajji is softer. I feel our techniques are different.
Do you both have differences when it comes to parenting decisions or are you mostly on the same page?
I am stricter about routine and discipline. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to parenting. The fact that we are on the same page is what matters. As individuals, we may be different people but when it comes to kids we are a team. Kids are very smart these days and they pick up on small things. It’s important for them to understand that parents are ‘one’. It gives them a perspective. It should not be that if mum says no, they can go to papa. It doesn’t work like that.
What does a typical Sunday look like in your home?
We do nothing! We don’t step out unless there is something very important. I oil the kids’ hair. We watch a movie, play games and relish aloo parathas. We are typical Punjabis and big foodies.
Paps, fan requests, stadiums — your kids are growing up around fame. What boundaries have you set to give them a normal childhood?
We make it a point to not over-pamper our children or give them extra luxuries. I know kids who go to school with bodyguards, but I don’t feel the need for that. Our kids lead a normal life and do their own chores. When we go to the UK, they do things themselves as we don’t have a fleet of nannies there and the kids realize that. I want them to be humble, not spoilt. I don’t want them to get everything easily and served on a platter. Wherever we go, there are protocols to follow and the kids are aware of them.
Moms have to juggle many roles. Who is your support system?
Without Bhajji’s support, I couldn’t have done movies or travelled. Then there’s my sister Ruby. When Bhajji and I have to travel together, then Ruby Maasi is there. My kids are very attached to her. My mom and sister-in-law are also very supportive. It takes a whole family to raise children. Kids also learn to respect elders. Family values are best instilled in a supportive setup.
If the kids have to describe you in one word or one sentence 20 years from now, what are you hoping for?
I want them to feel that mom is their best friend. They should be able to count on me for everything. Of course, the respect should be there. But at the end of the day, I want them to be comfortable with me so that they have my back and I have theirs.
Married life is hard work, it is work in progress-Harbhajan Singh, Geeta Basra

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; June 13, 2025)
It was a blend of cricketing and cinematic worlds when cricketer Harbhajan Singh and actress Geeta Basra tied the knot in 2015. In an interview with us, the couple reflects on their decade-long marriage, parenthood, and what keeps their bond strong through changing times.
‘Shaadi nibhane ke liye kuch nazar andaaz aur kuch bardasht karna padta hai’
Talking about married life, Harbhajan in his characteristic humour, says, “Yaar, main toh maanta hoon ki shaadi nibhane ke liye two things are very important kuch nazar andaaz aur kuch bardasht karna padta hai, baaki pyaar mohabbat toh chalti rehti hai shaadi mein. If you follow these two things, shaadi tik jaati hai.”
Geeta emphasizes that marriage is constant work. “Married life is hard work, it is work in progress and not something that you can take for granted. Tying the knot and having kids is just the beginning. You have to make time for each other, even as life gets busier with responsibilities and work.”
‘You have to work in a relationship to make things work’
Drawing parallels between marriage and cricket, Harbhajan says, “It’s easy to walk away, but marriage isn’t like a cricket match where you can decide you don’t want to play anymore. You can’t back off saying ki mujhe aur test match nahi khelni hai. Every relationship has its own ups and downs. You have to work on it continuously to make things work.”
Speaking about couples they admire, Geeta and Harbhajan feel that Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma have set a commendable standard. “They’re an ideal couple,” Geeta says.
‘Communication & emotional maturity are key to sustaining a relationship’
Reflecting on what leads to marriages breaking down, Harbhajan says, “It all comes down to personal choice and emotional strength. Pressure, triggers and life situations can push people to make decisions. Ego should never come in the way. Communication, patience and emotional maturity are key to sustaining a relationship.”
Geeta adds, “At the heart of it all, there has to be love. You can’t live with someone for the sake of it.”
‘We had to adjust to each other’s worlds’
Looking back at the early days of their relationship, Geeta recalls how cultural differences and contrasting career backgrounds posed challenges. “Though we’re both Punjabi, we were raised very differently. I grew up in the UK, and Harbhajan in Punjab. Our perspectives, our education — everything was different. We had to adjust to each other’s worlds,” she shares.
Geeta’s comeback and Harbhajan’s dream role
After a break from the film industry, Geeta is ready to return to the big screen. Geeta, who was a part of films like Dil Diya Hai (2006) and The Train (2007), was last seen in the Punjabi film Lock (2016). “This year is exciting. You’ll see me in Awasthi vs Awasthi and the Punjabi film Mehr.”
Meanwhile, Harbhajan, who has made cameo appearances in multiple films and played the lead in the Tamil film Friendship (2021), wants to take up meaningful roles. “If I could pick a role, I’d love to play a fauji. I want to be part of films that deal with real stories,” he says.
Meanwhile, the two are also busy with their new online chat show, called Who's The Boss? that focuses on relationships and features celebrity couples.

Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 8, 2023)
Actor Geeta Basra was rethinking her holiday plans to Paris (France) after seeing the visuals of the riots as people protested the killing of a teen by a cop. But, she is happy she didn’t cancel her vacation since it wasn’t “as terrifying” as it was portrayed in the news.
Accompanied by her husband, former cricketer Harbhajan Singh, and their kids, daughter Hinaya Heer Plaha and son Jovan Veer Singh Plaha, Paris was the last stop of her vacation in Europe. “We stayed in Paris for five days and didn’t witness any riots. It was very peaceful. There were police across the city, but there was nothing to worry about,” says Basra, who is back home in London.
The 39-year-old was in Monte Carlo (Monaco) when she heard the news about the riots from her family. “I called my friends in Paris, who assured me that things were fine. I’m thankful that we had five fabulous days there. We walked the city’s streets and saw the Eiffel Tower,” she says.
For those planning a trip to the French capital, the actor suggests “do your own research”. She adds, “Make sure you ask those living in Paris about the situation. Don’t go by just what you’re hearing or seeing.”

Madhu Daithota (BOMBAY TIMES; June 27, 2022)
Eight years after she quit acting to pursue domestic bliss, Geeta Basra – who was last seen in the B-town flick Second Hand Husband in 2015 – will return to films in director Pavan Wadeyar’s next. The project, which is also Pavan’s entry into Bollywood and is titled Notary, stars Parambrata Chatterjee, as the male protagonist, while Geeta plays his leading lady.
“When I quit acting after marrying Bhajji (cricketer Harbhajan Singh), I was clear that I wanted to be hands-on at home, including with my kids. Now, I finally feel ready to return to work,” shares Geeta.
The actor says she was clear that the subject had to not only pique her curiosity, but also be one that she was comfortable taking up, given that she is also a wife and mother. “Notary is an interesting subject and Shabbir, its maker, is a good friend, who I’ve known for over 15 years. We’ve never had a chance to collaborate and when he brought this film to me, it felt just right to make a comeback,” says Geeta.
Geeta adds, “So, right from a girl who is in college to her heading into marriage and being her lawyer husband’s backbone, my role has varied shades. It’s not as simple as it sounds, because she truly embodies strength and is made of sterner stuff. I could relate to it very well,” states the actor.
The film will take off in September and Geeta speaks of how her husband is extremely excited for her to return to the movies. “Bhajji is now retired, so he has the time to help out with the kids. Hinaya and Jovan are equally attached to him and my mother will be here to lend support. More importantly, while I’m always there for them, I want my kids to see that their mother also chose to pursue her passion,” sums up Geeta.
Parenting is a collaborative effort; it’s great that Virat Kohli shed light on paternity leave-Geeta Basra

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; April 1, 2022)
Flawless new moms, fancy post-pregnancy shoots and dramatic weight loss after delivering the child — such posts on social media seldom tell the real story. Mother of two, actress and wife of cricketer Harbhajan Singh, Geeta Basra nods in affirmative. She says, “Don’t go by what social media shows you. It’s deceptive. What you often see is the final picture, the end product — baby in arms, couple smiling. No one shares the stress behind it so do not put undue pressure on you, if you just had a baby or are struggling to have one. We all are human and none of our lives are as hunky-dory as it may seem on social media.”
Geeta and Harbhajan, who have a daughter, Hinaya Heer Plaha (born in 2016), welcomed their son Jovan in July 2021.
The actress had two miscarriages in the two years before her second pregnancy. “Even for someone like me who maintains a healthy diet and lifestyle, it wasn’t easy. I was struggling to get pregnant,” Geeta says, adding, “I had two miscarriages before Jovan was born and those were traumatic two years. This struggle needs to be spoken about. It happens to many of us, and I want women to know that they aren’t alone in this. I stayed positive. Support is very important. Only a woman can understand what another woman goes through.”
She reinstates both the mother and father have equal responsibility towards the upbringing of a child. She shares, “A working mom raised my two siblings and me. I want to be like that. Raising a child is as much a responsibility of a father as it is of a mother. In the United Kingdom (Geeta was born and raised there), paternity leave is a common thing. In India, many are not even aware that such a thing exists. It’s great that Virat Kohli shed light on this issue. That awareness has to be there. Parenting is collaborative work. Bhajji is changing our son’s diaper as we speak (smiles). He is a hands-on dad, but I have seen men who aren’t as involved in their children’s upbringing as if it isn’t their responsibility and that’s wrong.”
Virat took paternity leave to be with his wife and Bollywood actor-producer Anushka Sharma for the birth of their daughter Vamika, who was born in January 2021.
She concludes by saying, “Motherhood is rewarding. Every day is an adventure, but you need to give time to yourself, too. Your body undergoes so many changes. It takes a lot of work to keep your fitness levels high and sanity in place. Being active is most important and it helps you in the long run. Yoga has helped me a lot. You should find your own happy space.”

HINDUSTAN TIMES (January 22, 2022)
Actor Dulquer Salmaan announced on Thursday that he has tested positive for Coronavirus. This comes just a few days after his father, veteran star Mammootty shared on social media that he, too, had contracted the virus.
Taking to Instagram, the Kurup (2021) star shared his health update. He wrote, “I have just tested positive for Covid-19. I’m isolating at home and have mild flu symptoms, but am otherwise ok... This pandemic is not over and we must stay vigilant. Please mask up and stay safe (sic).”
Meanwhile, on the work front, the actor’s upcoming film, Salute, was pushed due to the surge in the number of Covid-19 cases. It was scheduled to release on January 14.
Another celeb down with Covid-19 is wife of former cricketer Harbhajan Singh, actor Geeta Basra.
On Friday, she informed her fans of her diagnosis on Instagram. She posted, “After being so careful and trying to dodge this damn thing for 2 years, the virus finally caught us (sic),” she wrote. Alongside the update, she posted a picture of her resting on the bed.

January 13 celebration, also to mark son’s arrival, scrapped; intimate affair planned
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; January 7, 2022)
With the arrival of their newborn Jovan Veer Singh, actor Geeta Basra and cricketer Harbhajan Singh were keen to mark the new phase of their lives with a Lohri party on January 13. Friends and family, including some from the United Kingdom were set to fly down to India for the celebration, which has now been called off due to the Omicron scare.
Confirming the news, Basra says, “The surge in cases is alarming, and [hosting] a celebration during this period would be wrong. We have decided to put the party on hold till things get better, and have planned a small affair with our family instead. We urge everyone to stay safe and follow appropriate Coronavirus protocols so that we can tide over these circumstances in the safest way possible.”
The festival holds importance for the parents, who had also thrown a bash on the occasion, after the birth of their daughter, Hinaya four years ago. This year, they will mark Lohri with a small group, in Jalandhar.
For Harbhajan Singh, the motivation to go out there and play was not there anymore-Geeta Basra

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; January 3, 2021)
Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh announced on December 24, 2021 that he was retiring from all forms of competitive cricket. Actress and wife Geeta Basra, who has been a huge support system for him, told Bombay Times, “This wasn’t an overnight decision. He had thought about this for a while. He was anyway semi-retired for the last four-five years. The only cricket that he was playing was in the IPL. Since last year he had it in his head that he wants to retire, but he had his commitments to KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders), so he felt he would announce it once the season was over. So this didn’t come as a shock to me. He had discussed it with me previously. As a wife, I can only support him as he himself knows this best. ”
Talking about the timing of the announcement, she explained, “Every sportsman knows when it’s time for him/her to hang their boots and look forward to the next chapter. For Harbhajan, the motivation to go out there and play was not there anymore. When that happens, you know you need to call it a day. Mentally he retired a long time ago. He was just waiting for the right time to make it official.”
The decision however doesn’t mean that Bhajji will get to spend more time at home. Geeta revealed, “He isn’t actively involved with cricket anymore, but he is busier when he is not playing cricket with his ads, films, shows and appearances. Sometimes, I feel the need to tell him to take some time out for us.”
When asked if she would have liked a farewell match for Bhajji, Geeta says, “That would have been an icing on the cake. Seeing him on the ground playing would have been great. I would have loved for him to have a farewell game. Guess, destiny had other plans. A final match would have been perfect for the retirement though.”
When I saw the promos of Friendship, I told Harbhajan Singh he was born for the camera-Geeta Basra

One would assume that having an actor as a wife, cricketer Harbhajan Singh would have received tips to help with his first tryst with the big screen. But Geeta Basra tells us she didn’t give her husband any advice before he began shooting for his debut movie, Friendship. In fact, she was “shocked” after watching a few promos of the project.
“He didn’t need any inputs. He’s a natural. I was surprised by how easy he was onscreen. When I saw the look and promos, I told him he was born for the camera,” Basra shares.
The Tamil film will have Singh dancing and mouthing dialogues in a language unfamiliar to him. And like his performance on the field, Basra feels that he shines on screen as well. “Facing the camera isn’t easy. Sure, cricketers do ad shoots, but that’s different [from acting in a movie]. And films down south are different from Hindi films, even in terms of shooting. Dancing is a whole new ball game too,” she adds.
Looking forward to the film, The Train (2007) actor says, “Even when he hosts on TV, he is good with one-liners. I know he’ll be amazing but to see one of the best spinners of India acting in a film would be weird (laughs).”
However, she’s quick to add that Singh doesn’t plan on turning the stint into a full-time career. “He doesn’t want to make a career out of acting. It’s just an opportunity that came to him and he thought of giving it a go. I always say that one needs to try out every opportunity,” Basra concludes.
It’s a conscious decision to keep my son Jovan away from the public eye-Geeta Basra

Titas Chowdhury (HINDUSTAN TIMES; September 13, 2021)
In July, actor Geeta Basra and former cricketer Harbhajan Singh welcomed their son, Jovan Veer Singh Plaha. While they have shared pictures of the family with the baby, they have refrained from revealing his face. “It’s a conscious decision to keep him away from the public eye. I did that when my daughter, Hinaya, was born, too. Jovan is a baby and I don’t think it is required to bring him before the world. Going further, we won’t have a choice, but I want to keep him away for as long as things are in my control,” shares Basra.
What further reinforced their decision was a paparazzi incident that took place a few years ago. She reveals, “We had gone to the Golden Temple and were surrounded by the media who wanted to click Hinaya. She was scared and petrified, and started crying. We had to leave, as we didn’t have a choice.”
With conjectures doing the rounds that the third wave might affect kids, Basra is leaving no stone unturned to keep them safe. “With a newborn in the house now, I will have to be even more cautious. I am very careful about who I meet. Harbhajan isn’t here and I’m alone with my two children. I can’t take any risk right now,” she concludes.
Harbhajan Singh missed my first pregnancy; this time he was there even during labour-Geeta Basra

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 22, 2021)
Geeta Basra is ecstatic to become a mother again, this time to a boy. What the actor is even happier with is the fact that her husband, cricketer Harbhajan Singh, was present with her, more than he was the first time she was pregnant.
“He wasn’t there a lot in the first pregnancy. He was playing in IPL. I spent four months in India, and then went to London for the delivery. Bhajji was in and out, and then he came when our daughter Hinaaya was to be delivered,” Basra recalls.
This time around, Singh was present throughout. “He took one month for IPL. But he was very supportive throughout this pregnancy. He was there with me even during labour and held my hand. I didn’t need to do much, just put up my feet and relax,” she adds.
The couple took to social media earlier this month to share the news about the arrival of “Baby Plaha”. Calling it an “overwhelming” feeling, Basra shares that, for the longest time, her family wanted her to have a second child. “The grandparents were overjoyed. But my parents are sad that they could not be here due to the pandemic,” says the 37-year-old actor.
As for the baby’s name, she reveals that she had decided on a boy’s name when she was pregnant with Hinaaya.
While the couple didn’t think about whether it’d be a boy or a girl, the actor shares four-year-old Hinaaya sensed it. “She said it’d be a baby brother,” Basra says, adding that she will announce her son’s name in a few days. She also reveals that Singh is up at night with her to look after the baby, and adds, “He changes the diapers, and I feed the baby. He’s very hands on. It’s important for a woman to have that support.”

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 21, 2021)
Good wishes have been pouring in for Geeta Basra since she announced her second pregnancy. Sharing an image of husband-cricketer Harbhajan Singh, daughter Hinaya Heer Plaha and herself, Basra wrote, “Coming soon.. July 2021”.
Talking about becoming a mum a second time, she says, “It’s different and this pregnancy has been very difficult. Hinaya’s was a smoother ride in terms of eating but this time, it is difficult to eat and I am not craving anything. I was really looking forward to indulging in some good food but maybe in the coming days, things will change.”
The actor states that one can never be prepared enough for this. “You know what’s coming but you also tend to forget a lot of things. You know you will have to go through the whole thing again, so it’s scary. It is overwhelming. During Hinaya’s birth, I was in London, UK, all alone but with this pregnancy, I have a child to focus on. Earlier, the attention was on me but now, Hinaya is the focus. She is excited and is looking forward to being a sister,” says Basra, 37.
Was a second child always the plan? “Yes,” she says, adding, “I didn’t want only one child. A child needs a sibling. Of course, to each their own. I would love to have two kids.”
Being a celebrity parent, she understands that spotlight is inevitable but Basra tries to protect her daughter as much as possible. She shares, “When we would be clicked at airports or asked for autographs, Hinaya would be curious but we didn’t give that too much attention. We want our kids to have a normal childhood. When she gets clicked, she would hide her face as she is shy. We try to keep her away as much as we can.”
She adds Singh is excited about the baby and though she would have loved to go on a holiday before the baby is born, due to Covid-19, that would not be advisable.
Harbhajan Singh is an excellent father; he’s extremely protective and caring-Geeta Basra

Geeta Basra and her cricketer husband Harbhajan Singh announced yesterday that they are all set to welcome their second child in July this year
Debarati Sen (BOMBAY TIMES; March 15, 2021)
Geeta Basra, who made her Bollywood debut opposite Emraan Hashmi in Dil Diya Hai (2006), went missing from the screen after she tied the knot with cricketer Harbhajan Singh in 2015. The couple welcomed daughter Hinaya Heer in 2016, and are now all set to welcome their second child. The actress took to Instagram yesterday to share pictures sporting a baby bump. “Coming soon.. July 2021 (sic),” she wrote with the pictures that she posted. While the actress is tightlipped about her pregnancy, she is all praise for her husband, who she says has proved to be a hands-on father. “He is an excellent father — extremely protective and caring. He likes to spend time as much time as possible with Hinaya. I would rate him eight on 10 as a father. I don’t think anyone is perfect. There’s always a space for improvement,” she says.
Besides welcoming their second child, the actress is excited about seeing her husband on the big screen. While Harbhajan has done a few cameos, he will be making his full-fledged debut with the Tamil film Friendship. She says, “Seeing him playing the main lead in a film is something I never expected to happen. But it is great to see him do something so different. I think everyone should try something new, something out of their comfort zone. Initially, he wasn’t sure whether he would be able to pull it off, but he is so confident, and I think that really helped him. It’s not that he wanted to be an actor, but this is an opportunity that had come to him and he decided to explore it. I think he has enjoyed it a lot. I am glad that he has now come on my side of the field (laughs!). The tricky part for him was getting the dialogues right, but he has done a good job. It doesn’t seem like this is his first film.”
At a time when biopics on many sports personalities are either being planned or on the floors, when asked if a biopic was to be made on her husband, who would she want to play him on the big screen, Geeta tells us, “I think Vicky Kaushal would be perfect for it. He has that Punjabi physique and can pull off any role. He is very versatile and will probably fit the bill. As for me, I would say Priyanka (Chopra Jonas) to essay my part on screen.”

Cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who was seen in a special appearance in the Punjabi movie, Bhaji In Problem (2013), is all set to make his debut in South films with Friendship. In the Tamil film directed by John Paul Raj and Sham Surya, the cricketer essays the role of an engineering student, who hails from Punjab. When we asked Harbhajan, who is in his late 30s, whether he was apprehensive about playing a student on screen, he said, “I think I am fit enough to pass off as a college student, uncleji nahi lagunga.”
Talking about playing a lead role in a Tamil film, he joked, “Let the Khans do Bollywood films, I am happy doing Tamil and Punjabi movies.” On a serious note, he added, “I get immense love from the people of Tamil Nadu as I have played for the Chennai team in the Indian Premier League (IPL). So, the language is not absolutely unknown to me, but yes, I do need a translator on set, who helps me with my scenes. I have also shot a cameo for another Tamil film, which is yet to release.” However, Friendship will be Harbhajan’s first full-fledged film as an actor down South.
Harbhajan is aware that many cricketers have tried their luck in front of the camera in the past, but haven’t been successful. “My wife, Geeta (Basra), told me not to get into films as it’s nothing like the sport that I play. She is right in the sense that acting is not everyone’s cup of tea, but if nothing else, tajurba toh mil hi jayega. For the film Friendship, I shot for two days before the Coronavirus lockdown, and now, around 15-20 days’ work is pending,” he said.
Speaking about how he is testing the waters in the film world, he shared, “I could think of pursuing acting, but it all depends on how I fare in this film. I have also been offered a Punjabi film. For 19 years of my life as a cricketer, I have travelled constantly. Today, I only play in the IPL, which happens once in a year. I have 10 months in the year for myself, so why not do something new?”
Harbhajan Singh won’t explain an act of humanity-Geeta Basra

Surprised that even in such times of crisis “many still have time to find fault in others”, actor Geeta Basra has come out in support of her husband Harbhajan Singh. Ever since the cricketer and his contemporary Yuvraj Singh courted controversy by tweeting in support of Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi’s call for help for those in need during the Coronavirus outbreak, the former has remained tight-lipped about it.
Ask her why, and Basra, 36, explains, “He says he knows what his country means to him and doesn’t want to explain an act done for humanity. He lives for India and will die for India.”
Soon after Harbhajan and Yuvraj’s tweets, #ShameonYuviBhajji was trending on social media. Yuvraj responded to the criticism with a tweet that was retweeted by Harbhajan.
Basra says, “This goodwill gesture was to help Afridi, with whom they have played cricket, and have years of friendship, and he’s trying to do his bit for his country. They tried spreading the word to their fans all over the world. Let’s not bring religion into this. Even the virus isn’t making any discrimination. They would’ve done the same if anyone from any of the other teams like West Indies or England would’ve sought help.”
The celebrity couple has also distributed ration to 5,000 families in Jalandhar, Punjab to help the needy in this time of distress.

Cricketer Harbhajan Singh and wife, actress Geeta Basra were in Hyderabad for an event recently. They took some time off their packed schedule to regale the team with a few heart-warming nuggets about cricket and films. While talking about their journey as a couple, they touched upon the topic of parenthood and the effect of social media on their lives. Excerpts:
Looks like you did not get your daughter Hinaya along...
Harbhajan: Yes, we both travel a lot on work and we don’t always take her along. Only when we go somewhere for a few days and if there’s a weekend, we take her along with us.
How has parenthood changed the two of you?
Geeta: A lot! Hinaya has changed us in the best way possible. Both of us learned to be more patient, more understanding, and responsible for another person. She is our topmost priority now.
Harbhajan: I feel exactly the same way. No matter how tired I am, I forget all the tiredness the moment I see my daughter. Hinaya has changed me a lot, in every way.
Geeta, how would you rate Bhajji as a husband and a father?
Geeta: Oh, he’s fabulous. He is very hands-on with Hinaya, just like how my dad was with me. Seeing how he’s around Hinaya, I’m often reminded of my father and how he took care of me. I’m sure Hinaya will understand what a great dad she has when she gets older.
Harbhajan: Geeta, what about me as a husband? How much would you rate me out of 10?
Geeta: My husband is fabulous. (Harbhajan throws his arms into the air, showing signs of victory) But I would only give him nine out of 10. There should always be room for improvement, right? The only problem we both face is not having enough time together. Because of our busy schedules, we are together for just a couple of days every month. His work commitments keep him busy around the clock, but we cherish that little time we spend together. But, he is a great husband...very loving and supportive. (Harbhajan starts making faces at her and both start laughing). So nine out of 10 for both, as a father and a husband.
Harbhajan: Not bad at all. That’s a good score.
And Bhajji, how much would you rate Geeta?
Harbhajan: Abhi ye mujhe nau diye hai toh inko nine-and-half dene padenge. Vapas ghar bhi toh jaana hai. (laughs!)
As an inter-faith celebrity couple, the two of you often have to deal with online trolls. For instance, people started questioning Bhajji’s faith as a Sikh after pictures of your Karwa Chauth celebrations went viral recently...
Geeta: Everyone knows that I’m a Hindu, so I have my own customs. Besides, we have been observing these rituals since many years now. The bottomline is, you can’t make everyone happy. I don’t pay too much attention to social media trolls. I don’t think he (Harbhajan) pays any attention to them either.
Harbhajan: Not at all. I don’t even look at it.
Geeta: Exactly! It’s our life and we live it the way we want to. Everybody is sure to have their own thoughts on how to live their life. We both have our faiths and respect each other’s beliefs.
The recent reopening of the Kartarpur corridor was an emotional moment for Sikhs all over India. Bhajji, you made the trip across the border and visited the Gurudwara there. How was the experience?
H: I was very touched. It was my father’s dream to go visit Nankana Saheb. He even made a passport, but he couldn’t go in the end. Jo unka sapna tha, wo mere zariye poora hua. Mujhe lagta hai ki ek bulawa hota hai, jiske bina insaan darshan ke liye nahi jaa sakta. I feel blessed that I got that calling. I went there and got the opportunity to see his resting place.
G: We are now planning to go there together next time. I have never been there.

Geeta Basra's mother in-law,
Avtar Kaur, is eagerly waiting for her grandchild to arrive next month.
In a telephonic chat, she said, “It is a happy occasion for our family.“
Ask her if she has finished buying gifts for the baby and Harbhajan Singh's mother replied, “I'm little superstitious, so all these things will happen once the baby is born. Along with my blessings, I will give some gold ornaments to the child. We are simple people and don't believe in ostentatiousness. Of course, we will make panjiri, a ghee-laden food item that is given to new mothers. I will take it with me to London after Geeta's delivery.“
