For sometime now, speculations have been rife about filmmaker Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s Pink (2016), starring Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu in key roles, being remade in Tamil. Now, BT has it on record from Shoojit Sircar, the creative producer of the original film. Talking to us on the sidelines of his masterclass at the 49th edition of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, he said, “Yes, Pink is being remade in Tamil. I don’t think I will direct it, but the team has said that they will show the film to me once it’s ready. As much as I love what Aniruddha did with Pink, I respect the fact that the makers in Tamil want to have their own interpretation of the story.”Buzz is that Tamil superstar Ajith will step into Big B’s shoes in the remake. The actor had apparently given his word to the late Sridevi (while they were shooting for the Tamil version of English Vinglish) that he would collaborate with her husband Boney Kapoor’s company, which is now bankrolling the remake of Pink.
The film, tentatively titled Thala 59, is expected to go on floors in the third week of December and release sometime in the second half of 2019. A R Rahman is the top choice for the composer. We hear that the modalities are being worked out with a host of technicians in Chennai and Boney is likely to fly to the city to finalise the team, over the next couple of days.
