Virgin Produced India has partnered with Anil Kapoor
and Rhea Kapoor to produce Karan Boolani’s currently untitled feature
directorial debut, India’s first teen comedy about urban youth who meet
during their freshman year at an American university. The film tells a
story of teenagers who start college as strangers, but leave as friends
for life.
Rhea says, “We have had this project with us for a bit. Our film reflects the voice of the generation. It’s a risk we have taken, so we don’t know if this will work. You do it because you are passionate about films. We are making this film for a global audience so it isn’t specifically for Bollywood or Hollywood markets. We aren’t going to filter the content and that will be a challenge.”
When you talk about a teen drama in an American set-up, it’s hard not to bring American Pie in context. Will the film cater to the adult audience? “American Pie revolved around the sex life of the characters. Ours is not just about that. We aren’t shying away from that. Sex is an integral part of growing up. Our film will have it but it’s not entirely focussing on that. We’re going to be realistic,” she says.
They’ve managed to get music maestro A R Rahman on board for the teen drama. “We are so excited to have Rahman score music for us. I’ve been working with him on the album for a bit. Dad and Rahman sir will help nurture talent for us for the film. We will be introducing all genuine, fresh talent. It will be a mix of both international and Indian actors.” Will papa Anil, who is now a global icon be seen in the film? “Now that, you will have to wait and watch.”
