The first quarter has seen 54 releases and its been a disaster with
only three films doing well and that too because of low budgets. All
three had restrained costs and just like the real economy when costs are
having to be restrained it leaves little hope for expansion.
The industry is in desperate need of grossers outside the Salman, Shahrukh and Aamir films just for the confidence that business is there for other films. DUM LAGA KE HAISHA was the only film to find appreciation to an extent as it had something for the family audiences. Hence, it managed a sustained run at the box office despite a disastrous start.
DUM LAGA KE HAISHA, a light entertainer, was surrounded by dark, violent, thriller types like BADLAPUR, NH10 and BABY and the first two managed to do well due to their low costs. The classifications of films in 2014 are as follows.
