AAMIR KHAN - Assistant director
When I started as an assistant director, I was paid Rs 1000 a month and stopped taking pocket money from my mom. Since the age of 12, I'd been winning tennis tournaments and had given all the prize money to her. I told mom to give me some of the money from my savings every month so I could live on my earnings as an AD.
IRRFAN KHAN - Tuition teacher
I used to give tuitions to school kids in Jaipur, my home town, while in high school. I would get paid Rs 25 per student. It was exciting to make that kind of money at the time.
JACKIE SHROFF - Selling peanuts
I did odd jobs like sticking posters on the walls and selling peanuts. Money didn't count, I did what work I got and whatever I earned was for my mom and me. I was 14 at the time.
BIPASHA BASU - Teen model
I was 15 and still in school in Kolkata when I was selected for a Sangeeta Chopra ramp show. My first job as a model earned me Rs 3,000. I gave the money to my mom.
RANDEEP HOODA - Delivery boy in Oz
At 17, I worked in a Chinese restaurant, Inn of Khong, in Ballarat, Australia. I was paid $8 an hour and $1.50 for every delivery I made. I got laughed at because I'd drive around in a Maruti 800-like car with a 10-feet stuffed gorilla on the roof. But I got lots of tips and bought myself lots of beer.
NAWAZUDDIN SIDDIQUI - Chemist in Bhopal
My first job was as chief chemist at a petrochemical factory in Bhopal. My mother had mortgaged her jewellery to sponsor my education. I got paid Rs 4,000, saved the first two months' salary, went back to my village and got my mom's jewellery back.
KALKI KOECHLIN - Waitress in London
I was a student at University of London. My grandparents had paid for my tuitions but I had to work in an Italian café run by this seedy guy who'd flirt with all the waitresses, to pay the rent. I worked for four weeks and was paid 40 pounds. I quit that cafe after that but continued waitressing. I also sold tickets and popcorn at a UGC cinema in London. Years later, That Girl In Yellow Boots premiered there and I met those I'd once worked with.
SHAH RUKH KHAN - Usher at a ghazal night
For one evening I was an usher at a Pankaj Udhas ghazal concert in Delhi and was paid Rs 50. With my first earnings I took a train to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. I remember we had pink lassi there with sabza (basil) seeds. It was unforgettable!
