I feel, 20 years ago, we were more progressive-Iqbal Khan

Iqbal Khan on returning to TV with Yaadein: The show is all about being real

Iqbal Khan on returning to television with ‘Yaadein - Ek Doctor Do Zindagiyaan’, choosing emotion over excess
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; March 31, 2026)

He has spent over two decades navigating the bylanes of the entertainment industry with television shows, films, and web shows, but it was only around 2014, that Iqbal Khan says he truly began to take his craft seriously. Looking back at his career, the actor shares that he was “blessed to receive good work”, even as he continues to evolve. He returns to the small screen after three years with Yaadein - Ek Doctor Do Zindagiyaan, an adaptation of the Italian hit DOC, where he plays a surgeon dealing with eight years of memory loss. In conversation with mid-day, Khan reflects on starting from scratch, embracing change, and how the show’s emotions will make it relatable and drive audience connection, irrespective of the perspective from which it is told. Excerpts from the interview.

When Yaadein - Ek Doctor Do Zindagiyaan was offered to you, did you watch the original DOC?
Since it is an adaptation of an Italian show, which has also been remade in the US, [I was] curious. Though not for reference, just for the feel [of it], I have watched a few episodes of the Italian version.

The show talks about starting from scratch. You’ve had ups and downs in life, how did you deal with them?
In life, you don’t often realise when you are starting from scratch. At the time, it will be very difficult, and it has to be so. Because hardships bring wisdom. It’s during difficult times that you learn. It humbles you and sometimes you change for the better.

Daily soaps usually target women, with stories centred on female protagonists. It’s rare to see a male perspective. Will the audience connect?
There have been a few shows like that, for example Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah and Wagle Ki Duniya. Hui Gumm Yaadein will be a new addition to that list. I don’t see any reason why people will not accept it. Because our primary motive is emotions, which, in my personal opinion, is universal. Sometimes it breaks the barrier of languages also. As long as the emotions in the show are bang on, it will not be lost.

When you look back at your earlier work, how do you think you’ve evolved?
I’ve realized that I’m very objective about my work. I only started appreciating my craft maybe 2014 onwards. While I was okay back then, now I make sure that the performances are more real. When I take up a show, I tell the makers that I will not go over the top. And I don’t compromise on that. Luckily, this show is also all about being real.

Do you think content on TV is changing with time?
I think a lot of content has not changed on TV. I feel, 20 years ago, we were more progressive. However, God has been kind to me. Whatever work I’ve done on TV has always been good and progressive. But I take zero credit for it; things just happened.

Where do you find more creative freedom — on TV or OTT?
Whatever shows I have done, I have not had much of a problem. But if one has to weigh both, there’s definitely more creative freedom in OTT. I cannot do both at the same time. If I’m doing OTT, I don’t do TV, and vice versa. Both require time and commitment.

On TRPs?
I don’t think about it. I’m a firm believer of magic. So, no matter what the world thinks, whatever is their math or science, it doesn’t matter. It’s not in my hands.

I’ve learned not to be greedy for money, but for good work-Neha SK Mehta

Hasti Doshi (BOMBAY TIMES; October 17, 2025)

After a five-year break from television, Neha SK Mehta — best remembered for her role in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah — has returned to the small screen with Itti Si Khushi. “I was working on a web project, but that got postponed, and I suddenly found myself with time. That’s when I got a call for this role,” she says, adding, “When I heard the narration, it felt like the universe was giving me a platform to do my net practice before the next innings - my OTT debut.”

Ask her about her long gap and she says, “I did get offers, but I said yes only when something truly resonated with me. I’ve learned not to be greedy for money but good work.”

For years, audiences associated Neha with her portrayal of Anjali Mehta in Taarak Mehta..., a character she played for over a decade. Does she find it hard to break away from that image?

“Not really,” she says. “People still take autographs, calling me Anjali, even on the new set. And I take it as a compliment. That character gave me so much love. But as an actor, you have to keep evolving. Just like in life, you keep changing with time.”

I was terrified when Disha Vakhani quit Taarak Mehta-Asit Kumarr Modi

Tanvi J Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; September 5, 2025)

Over the past few years, there has been constant buzz about Dayaben returning to the long-running TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Disha Vakhani, who played the popular character, quit the show in 2017, and since then viewers have been wondering whether she will return or if a new actress will replace her.

Recently, pictures of Asit Modi, producer of the show, celebrating Raksha Bandhan with Disha went viral, adding to the speculation. When we spoke to Asit about this, he said, “Yes, this is one question people keep asking me. Honestly, I have never said this before, but I will admit that when Disha quit the show in 2017, I was terrified! Along with Jethalal, Daya was my most important character. Her style and diction became popular across the country, so I did not think of replacing her for a very long time.”

Talking about the rapport they share, he said, “Disha and I share a very cordial relationship and there is no bad blood. I would love to work with her again. After she left, I was hoping and praying that she would return. However, she chose to focus on her family life and became a mother. During the pandemic, when she became a mother again, I realized it wouldn’t be easy for her to come back. We are in touch and recently celebrated Raksha Bandhan.”

Asit admitted that the search for a replacement for Dayaben began around 2022–23, adding, “Our show has recently completed 17 years. Ab paani sar ke upar chala gaya hai and it is high time I bring a new Daya to the show.”

Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah, Saath Nibhaana Saathiya helped me with my Hindi-Kal Penn

Vinay MR Mishra (BOMBAY TIMES; May 18, 2025)

Kal Penn, known for his roles in House and the Harold & Kumar series, was recently in Mumbai in the first week of April. “I was hosting a gala this time, but I stayed on for a few days for meetings, see some family, and because I love Mumbai so much. So as much as I can stay, I always like to,” he says

For an exclusive shoot with Bombay Times, Penn takes a stroll along the iconic Juhu beach, eats Pani Puri and even relishes a nariyal pani. "I will have to warn my mum that the pani puri was just for the pictures," he quips.

During his stroll, he shares his ambitions to deepen his connection with the Indian entertainment industry - which comprises of securing local representation and pursuing OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) status. Read the excerpts as followed...

'I would love to do a Bollywood film'
Mumbai isn't a new city for Penn; in fact, it's a place where he's spent his summer vacations as a kid, zipping between Dadar and Juhu. This familiarity might explain why he's particularly impressed by the city's latest infrastructure - the coastal road bridge, which has slashed travel time between the suburbs and South Bombay. "The coastal road is actually amazing. The fact that you can get to South Bombay that much quicker is amazing. I live in New York, so I'm no stranger to congestion, traffic, construction, et cetera. But every time I come here, I feel like there's more and more infrastructure that has been built,” he shares.

He adds, "I just always love coming and working in Mumbai. With so many of the OTT shows and there's just so much diversity of content here and I'd love to come back to work. I would love to do a huge Bollywood film or an OTT show."

'I have not been offered a Hindi film yet'
Penn doesn't mince his words stating that he wants to do a Hindi film. And his choices are as quintessential as it can be for an NRI. “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” he states when asked what kind of Hindi film he would like to work in. “I don't think I've been offered a Hindi film yet. So, I feel this is an amazing time to explore that,” he adds.

'TMKOC and Saath Nibhaana Saathiya helped me with my Hindi'
As Penn talks about Hindi cinema, it is important to mention, how during his last visit to India in November last year, the actor visited the sets of popular Hindi TV show, Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah. Penn is self admittedly a fan of the show.

“So, I'm fluent in Gujarati and English. But I had to learn Hindi because I didn't grow up speaking (Hindi). And one of the ways I think a lot of people learn a language is through movies and TV. So, the two shows that I watched a lot to better my Hindi were both very watchable, very meme heavy, you can't scroll insta without seeing memes from either their show. They are Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah and Saath Nibhaana Saathiya.”

'Back in the day, South Asian community wasn't huge in the West'
The West has seen an influx of multiple South Asian actors including Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra Jonas entering the industry. Penn who could easily be one of the early ones to make a striking impact in the Hollywood entertainment industry feels great about.

“Back in the day when I was starting out my career, it wasn't a huge community, but there were talented, trained Indian American actors who had gone to theater school, film school. And when I would audition for projects in the late 90s, early 2000s – even if they were specifically Indian American or specifically Indian characters – there were still white actors who would audition for those roles, and they would just put makeup on them if they got the job. So, it just makes me happy, how far we have come,” he shares.

Talking further, "Art is constantly in flux and updating. There are these super talented producers and content creators, whether it's Mindy (Kaling, creator) or Priyanka (Chopra Jonas, actor) and all the stuff that they're doing. You have people like me wanting to come and sell shows here and work here (in India). Lines and categories are blurred, both from the sake of content creators and also for audiences because I think they're able to enjoy projects that weren't offered to us 10 or 15 years ago.”

'If an audience sensibility has changed, I would want to update that to make sure an audience laughs'
Penn, who also does stand-up comedy wishes to explore that in India. However, with the ongoing censorship over standup comedy in the country, Penn isn’t dithered.

“As an American actor and a comic, I just need to be mindful of my views. Somethings might be different back at home or last year, but it may be different now because laws and the sensibilities are different. Back at home, I always get this question, ‘Are you upset that you could never make a movie like Harold and Kumar today? You could never make the jokes you made 20 years ago?’ I always found them strange because why would I want to make the jokes I made 20 years ago? I've made those jokes. That's a barometer of comedy that's changed. If an audience sensibility has changed, I would want to update that to make sure an audience laughs. It is different there. As an American, my view is if I don't like something that someone's saying, and that happens often because comedy and art are always subjective, I personally, don't get worked up over it. I would just change the channel because I'm confident in my viewing habits. I would defend somebody's right to say whatever they want to say, whether I agree with it or not. That's the vibrancy of what we offer as artists. Comedy is subjective," he explains, and adds, "I'm mindful of wanting to learn the lay of the land and learn what are the benchmarks? What are the parameters? What's allowed, what's not allowed? I had a couple standup comedy friends here, who explained to me that technically, I cannot use cuss words on stage. That's not something that I would have known, as an American

'If my presence makes somebody feel less invisible, more empowered, that is wonderful'
Penn’s partner Josh (his last name is not in the public domain yet) didn’t accompany the actor on his trip to the country. “He wanted to come. He's part of a friend's wedding. So couldn't make it.”

Penn came out earlier in 2021 and admits “people have been very kind” to his coming out. “Everybody figures themselves out at different times. There's no timeline for it. There are some people who figure themselves out at seven, and for other people, I have heard stories and interacted with people who in their 70s have figured themselves out. I don't live in a vacuum. I am very well aware of how and why representation matters. If my presence makes somebody feel less invisible, more empowered, that is wonderful. I didn't necessarily have that.”

Ask him if there is going to be a wedding, and Penn quickly quips, “Did my mom tell you to ask that? We've been engaged for seven years. So, we need to get it together.”

Ask Kal if there is going to be a fourth part of Harold & Kumar: “I would love to make a fourth movie. We had three movies. Thanks to all the fans. We would all love to make a fourth one. There's nothing on the books right now. We are trying to figure. I love that character so much. He's cooler than I will ever be in real life. I'd love to do it."

It’s disheartening to see negativity being spread-Dilip Joshi

TMKOC: Dilip Joshi threatens Asit Kumar Modi to leave the show, holds his collar during a major fight, report

Dilip Joshi issues a statement over his alleged physical spat with Taarak producer Asit Modi
BOMBAY TIMES (November 20, 2024)

Dilip Joshi, who’s best known as Jethalal from Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, has addressed rumours surrounding his alleged altercation with the show’s producer Asit Modi. According to reports, the two had a heated argument during which Dilip grabbed Asit by the collar and threatened to quit the show. The incident, which reportedly occurred in August, was said to have been triggered by a leave request.

However, in a statement, Dilip has dismissed the reports. He said, “I just want to clear the air about all these rumours going around.”

Dilip said, “There have been some stories in the media about me and Asit bhai that are completely false, and it really saddens me to see such things being said. Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is a show that means so much to me and millions of fans, and when people spread baseless rumours, it hurts not only us, but also our loyal viewers.”

He added, “It’s disheartening to see negativity being spread about something that has brought so much joy to so many for so many years. Every time such rumours pop up, it feels like we’re constantly explaining that they are untrue. It’s tiring, and it’s frustrating because it’s not just about us — it’s about all the fans who love the show and get upset reading these things.”

The statement further read, “Earlier, there were even rumours about me leaving the show, which is completely false. It’s disappointing to see such things popping up again and again, and sometimes, I can’t help but wonder if some people are just jealous of the show’s continued success. I’m here, I’m working every day with the same love and passion for the show, and I’m not going anywhere.”

Actor-poet Shailesh Lodha quit Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah in 2022 after being a part of the show for 14 years. Recently he made an entry in the TV show Advocate Anjali Awasthi.

Talking about getting back to the fiction genre, he says, “I am doing a fiction show after a gap of two years, but I was part of the reality show Wah Wah Kya Baat Hai, which kept me busy. I was also travelling around the world for my poetry shows. I was waiting for a good fiction show to come my way, so when I got this offer, I took it up.”

Shailesh admits that he is as passionate about acting as he is about his poetry. He shares, “I feel that being a poet complements the actor in me. I want to do a lot more in the acting field and hope to bag strong roles in the future, because I want people to see that side of me as well.”

He adds, “Shayaad meri kavita ka aasmaan itna bada hai ki usme log bhool jaate hai ki main abhineeta bhi hoon. I hope I get a variety of interesting roles across all mediums.”

Therefore, I felt it was the right time to try something different and since I am a Gujarati, I decided to act in a show.”

Talking about why he quit Taarak Mehta, Raj says, “I played Tappu for five years and there was nothing more that I could explore with the character. ‘I would not like to speak about Munmun’

We hope our audience will give her the same love they have shown to the show and its characters for the past 16 years.”

She has been issued a notice of breach of contract while the actress has also accused the makers of making her exit from the show difficult. Palak played this role for 5 years. Taarak Mehta is one of the longest running shows on TV. Jethalal aka Dilip Joshi plays the lead role. The show is produced by Asit Kumarr Modi.

Delhi High Court issues order to ban the unauthorized use of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah's content

BOMBAY TIMES (August 18, 2024)

In a landmark ruling, the Delhi High Court has issued a John Doe order to safeguard the intellectual property rights of the iconic and most popular Indian sitcom, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Neela Film Productions Private Limited, the show's producer, successfully argued that the title, format, characters, characterizations, mannerisms, dialogues, and other unique elements of the show are protected under intellectual property law.

The Court's decision comes after Neela Film Productions brought to light the widespread infringement of their rights on various online platforms. The plaintiff identified numerous social media accounts, websites, and YouTube channels that have been illegally using the show's characters, producing animations, Al-generated images, deepfakes, and even pornographic content featuring the beloved characters. Additionally, certain platforms were found to be selling unauthorized merchandise under the guise of the show.

In granting the ex parte and interim injunction, Justice Mini Pushkarna recognized the gravity of the situation, stating that Neela Film Productions had established a prima facie case for the injunction. The Court's order not only restrains known infringers but also extends to John Doe (unknown) defendants who are involved in the illegal activities mentioned.

Mr. Asit Kumarr Modi, the well known producer of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, expressed his relief at the Court's decision, stating, "This show has been a labor of love for everyone involved, and it's disheartening to see our hard work being exploited in such a manner. We are grateful to the Delhi High Court for recognizing the importance of protecting our intellectual property. This order sends a strong message that such infringements will not be tolerated. As the creator of this show, I have always believed in the power of storytelling and the impact it can have on people's lives. This order not only protects our creative efforts but also boosts the morale of everyone involved in the making of the show. It reassures us that our creativity will be respected and safeguarded, allowing us to continue bringing joy to our audience without fear of exploitation."

Mr. Modi further added that, "We've put in significant effort to expand the TMKOC IP into animation, gaming, and merchandise. This Delhi High Court ruling safeguards our rights, bolstering our confidence to push our creative boundaries even further."

Anand & Naik Law Firm represented Neela Film Productions in this matter. Advocate Madhu Gadodia, Managing Partner, Anand & Naik Law Firm commented, "This order is a significant victory for content creators. The Court has upheld the sanctity of intellectual property rights, and this serves as a precedent for future cases of digital infringement."

Advocate Ameet Naik, Managing Partner, Anand & Naik Law Firm stated, "This order is first of its kind for protection against infringement of characters in content be it television shows, web series or films."

The Delhi High Court's ruling marks a crucial step in the ongoing battle against digital piracy and the unauthorised use of intellectual property in India.

My disappearance was not a publicity stunt-Gurucharan Singh

My disappearance was not a publicity stunt: Gurucharan Singh

Hasti Doshi (BOMBAY TIMES; July 9, 2024)

In April this year, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah actor Gurucharan Singh shocked everyone when he suddenly went missing. On April 22, he was scheduled to fly from Delhi to Mumbai, but never boarded the flight. Subsequently, a kidnapping case was filed by the Delhi Police after his father, Harjit Singh, lodged a complaint. Nearly a month after going missing, the actor returned home on May 18.

Following his return, Gurucharan told the police that he had been dealing with some personal issues and had embarked on a spiritual journey.

Since his return, there has been a lot of curiosity around where he was and what made him disappear from his house for several weeks.

Speaking exclusively with Bombay Times, Gurucharan, who is currently in Mumbai for some personal work, said, “Since the pandemic, there have been many things that affected me. I left Mumbai and went back to Delhi in 2020 as my father was undergoing surgery. After that, I tried starting many businesses on my own, but none of them worked out - either the work wasn’t done properly or the people I collaborated with disappeared. We also have a property dispute going on for years and a lot of money was spent on that, too. So, because of all this, my finances got badly affected and I was very disturbed.”

‘I have always been spiritual’
Gurucharan added, “I have always been spiritual because of my parents and at this point in life when I was feeling low, I turned towards God. I went on a spiritual journey and had no plans of coming back. But God gave me a sign and that made me return home. Many people think I planned my disappearance for publicity, but that’s not true. If I wanted publicity, I could have given interviews to talk about the pending dues for my work in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. I could have used social media to do that, but I didn’t. Even after coming back home, I didn’t give any interviews, but now I am speaking up because I want to clarify certain things that people are saying about me.”

‘I am asking people from the industry to support me’
Now that the actor is back, he has been looking for interesting work. “I am asking people from the industry to support me. I am back and want to do a lot of work. I also want to pay off all the loans and debts that I have, one by one. That can happen through my work, and I am ready to work hard. I have realized that I can continue my spiritual journey even while fulfilling my other responsibilities in life,” shared the 51-year-old actor, who became popular as Roshan Singh Sodhi in Taarak Mehta. He quit the show in 2013; he rejoined in 2014 and quit again in 2020.

‘I plan to get married soon and settle down’
While the actor wants to focus on his career, he also wants to settle down. When we asked him if wishes to get married soon, he replied, “I do plan to get married soon and settle down in life. Once that happens, I would like to shift my parents from Delhi to Mumbai so that I can take care of them.”

Once we close my missing report toh main aaram se baat karunga-Gurucharan Singh

I will talk when the time is right, says Gurucharan Singh

Yashika Mathur (HINDUSTAN TIMES; May 29, 2024)

Gurucharan Singh has been making headlines for almost a month. The Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC) actor, who went missing on April 22, returned home after 25 days. Talking to us, the actor says, “Mera abhi case close hona hai. Kuch formalities ho gayi hain, thodi bachi hain. Ek baar woh ho jaaye toh main sabse aaram se baat karunga iss baare mein.”

Ask the 51-year-old actor, who rose to fame after playing the role of Roshan Singh Sodhi in TMKOC, what case he’s referring to, and he says, “Main jab gaya tha, mere daddy ne missing report daali thi. Woh close hona hai abhi. Ek baar woh ho jaaye to main baat kar sakta hoon.”

Some reports suggested that he isn’t keeping well: “I was feeling unwell earlier, but I am fine now.” He adds that none of his colleagues, especially from TMKOC, have connected with him: “My number is often switched off and they don’t have my parents’ numbers either. So they have not been able to talk to me.”

Singh went missing in April when he left his Delhi home to take a flight to Mumbai. Soon after his return on May 17, he was questioned by the Delhi police and his statement was recorded.

Gurucharan home after 24 days; planned disappearance, say cops

THE TIMES OF INDIA (May 19, 2024)

Speaking to Bombay Times, Gurucharan’s father Hargit Singh said, “My wife and I both very happy to see him back home. We were very worried for him and now one can see how relaxed and happy we are. On Thursday night he rang our door bell. I told my wife that this is how our son rings the bell and I have a feeling it is him. When I opened the door I saw him standing there and I can't explain what I felt. How happy I was to see him safe and sound.”

He added, "We wanted him to just relax, so we told him to go and sleep. The next morning we spoke."
According to police, Gurcharan told the officials that he had left this worldly life and was on a religious journey. In the past few days, he stopped at Gurudwaras in many cities like Amritsar and Ludhiana, but later realised that he should return home.

Gurcharan's father said his son had come back home to check on them. "He didn't realize there was a massive search for him. We informed the police that he is back home. We went to the police station on Friday to give the details that the police required. Gurcharan ke wapas aane se hum bohot hi jyada khush hain. We spoke about what happened and now we have put it behind us. All we wanted was for him to be safe and come home.... God is with us."

We tried reaching out to Gurucharan as well but he was unavailable to speak at the moment.

Gurcharan was popular as Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah's Roshan Singh Sodhi. He quit the show in 2013 and joined back a year later. Finally he quit the show again in 2020.

His co-actor from Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah Jennifer Mistry is happy that he is home.

She said, “I woke up this morning and read about him returning home. I am really happy for him. I did have a feeling that he could have gone somewhere on a spiritual journey because because he is very spiritually inclined. It’s just that he should have informed his parents so that they were not troubled. But I am happy that he has come back home.”

Gurucharan’s friend from Mumbai Bhakti Soni who was supposed to pick him up at the Mumbai airport was also in touch with his family and the police. When she learnt about his return, she said, “I got a call from the police on Friday afternoon that Gurucharan is found and is back home. I haven’t spoken to him yet.. only he will be able to tell us what happened. But I am happy that he is home safe and sound. All our prayers have been answered.”

Reportedly, Gurucharan Singh was a frequent user of credit cards and had many bank accounts for his financial activities. Police found that he operated more than 10 bank accounts. He used his credit cards to settle the balance on one card with another.

Gurucharan became a household name as Roshan Singh Sodhi in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. He quit the show in 2013 but returned the next year. He finally exited the show in 2020.

Rohit Meena, DCP South West, Delhi Police, told us, “After leaving Delhi (on April 22), Gurucharan kept roaming in cities like Amritsar and Jalandhar, and visited various gurdwaras in these cities. He would eat at langars and even slept on the roadside or inside gurdwaras. He said he wanted to go on this spiritual journey. Two days back it was his birthday, and that was when he realized that he should return home. We sent our teams to Mumbai, Amritsar, and Hemkund Sahib. We also got in touch with his spiritual guru to ask about his whereabouts, and that’s how we came to the conclusion that he had planned his own disappearance.”

Actor Gurucharan Singh, known as Sodhi from the TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC), has gone missing. He was last seen at the Delhi airport on April 22 and was to board a flight to Mumbai. But he neither reached the destination, nor was he to be found anywhere.

The family lodged a Missing complaint at the Palam Police Station on Friday. His father, Hargit Singh, tells us, “All of us are very tense. We haven’t got any update so far.” We tried calling on two of Gurucharan’s numbers. One was switched off and the other was out of network coverage area at the time of going to press.

The team of TMKOC, which he quit in 2021, is assisting the family in this distressing hour. Sachin Shroff, who plays the titular role, tells us, “Though I have not worked with him on this show, the team is helping the family and is in touch with the agencies.”

Technically, I am living Bhide’s life more than I lead my own-Mandar Chandwadkar

‘The game allows viewers to interact with Bhide’

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has its own gaming universe, including the popular Bhide Scooter Race, which crossed one million downloads recently
Christalle Fernandes (MID-DAY; January 28, 2024)

TMKOC, as the show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is popularly known as, is a TV sitcom with mindboggling recall value. The show launched in 2008 and has continued for over 3,900 episodes across 15 years. The characters, who are residents of Gokuldham Society—Jethalal Gada played by Dilip Joshi and Atmaram Tukaram Bhide played by Mandar Chandwadkar—have now found their way to social media reels, memes, and more recently, games.

The game, Bhide Scooter Race, has crossed one million downloads on the Google Play store and the Apple app store. Inspired by the obsessive attachment that Bhide has for his vintage, yellow scooter, which he zips off on to deliver achaar-papad that his wife Madhavi makes, the game, says Asit Kumarr Modi, creator-producer-managing director of Neela Film Production, which produces the show, has become more popular among gamers who don’t watch the show regularly.

“Taarak Mehta is like a live action comedy show,” he tells mid-day. “Viewers want to be entertained at all times; what better way than to offer them simple and fun games surrounding well-known characters? It’s a family show that employs simple storytelling. We upgrade the show as the world upgrades,” says Modi, who plans to launch more games in the upcoming months.

A year ago, Neela Mediatech, the gaming and animation studio arm of Neela Films, created online, offline, single-player and multi-player games based on popular characters from the show. “It’s because people turn to TMKOC to bust stress,” says Chandwadkar, as we catch up with him between shoots.

He recalls meeting a pair of brain surgeons at an airport once; they said they watch his show to let off steam after a gruelling day in the OT. “It helps them relax,” the actor who plays a middle-class Maharashtrian tuition teacher, says. “It’s why the game is popular too. Users, especially kids, like the fact that they can now interact with Atmaram.” The combination of the show’s trademark music, iconic touches like Bhide’s scooter, and the show’s catchphrases have been replicated in the game.

While several of the actors have changed over time, Chandwadkar has played the role of the society’s disciplinarian secretary for 16 years. The character, he says, is now an extension of his own person. The scooter has a large fan following among children viewers of the show.

Ask him what his favourite memory of playing the character is, and he recalls how the show’s writer, late Tarak Mehta, was hesitant about the twist he had given to the personality of Bhide. Later, Mehta had told him that Bhide had become his favourite character. “Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chasmah is not a serial anymore. It’s a way of life,” he says.

“Technically, I am living Bhide’s life more than I lead my own. Sometimes, when I return home, I confuse what I’ve said to Sonalika [Joshi, who plays his wife Madhavi] with what I’ve said to my own wife,” he laughs. “TMKOC is family now.” The Gokuldham society gang also celebrates festivals together.

The studio also has games based on other central characters, including Run Jetha Run, Hungry Goli, and Daya’s Match Pool. Collectively, the games have achieved the five million download mark.

Shailesh Lodha gets his pending dues amounting to 1 crore

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah producer Asit Modi on Shailesh Lodha aka Taarak Mehta quits show

The Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah actor won the lawsuit he had filed against producer Asit Modi, after which his dues have been settled
Vinay MR Mishra (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 5, 2023)

Shailesh Lodha, who played Taarak Mehta in the TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC) for 14 years, has won the lawsuit that he filed against producer Asit Kumarr Modi for not clearing his dues. The verdict came out in May and as per the settlement terms, a sum of 1,05,84,000 has been paid to the actor. Shailesh quit TMKOC in April 2022 and earlier this year, he approached the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for the clearance of his yearlong dues.

‘HAPPY WITH THE VERDICT’
When we reached out to Shailesh, the actor said he was happy with the verdict and grateful to the NCLT. “This fight was never about the money. It was about seeking justice and self-respect. I feel like I have won a battle and I’m happy that the truth has prevailed,” Shailesh said.

The actor has never spoken at length about the circumstances behind his exit. While hinting at how things went sour, Shailesh said, “He wanted me to sign some papers to clear my dues. They had certain clauses like you cannot talk to the media and other things. I didn’t bow down to the armtwisting. Why would I sign any papers to get my own money?”

‘MY CASE HELPED ANOTHER ACTOR’
Furthermore, Shailesh shared how his fight seems to have helped another actor who was a part of the show. “One of the actors, who I don’t want to name, wasn’t paid for over three years. After I filed the suit, he was called by the production house and was paid his dues. He called to thank me for it,” Shailesh, who is also a well-known poet and writer. Despite repeated attempts, producer Asit Modi did not respond to our calls and messages till the time of going to press.

Priya Ahuja Rajda exits Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah; says didn’t hear from makers for 8 months

Priya exits Tarak Mehta... says didn’t hear from makers for 8 months
Syeda Eba Fatima (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 25, 2023)

It has been a puzzling wait for fans of actor Priya Ahuja Rajda, who portrayed the character of Rita Reporter in the popular TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC). After being absent for several months at a stretch, speculations arose regarding her future with the show.

Rajda shares her ordeal: “It’s been eight months and I’ve not heard from the makers or been informed whether or not I am part of the show. I have tried to contact (producer) Asit Kumarr Modi and operations head Sohil Ramani, but they don’t bother to reply to my messages.”

This lack of courtesy, coupled with unresponsive attempts to reach out to the concerned parties, led Priya to take the difficult decision of “officially resigning from the show a week ago”. “They didn’t even reply to that [my resignation]. I think they were waiting for me to get tired and take a step like this,” says the actor. The 38-year-old rues that “there must have been a lot of opportunities” she has lost during this time despite not “having any exclusive contract with TMKOC”.

The situation became particularly challenging when her husband, Malav Rajde, who served as the show’s director for 14 years, decided to part ways with the production team. “Malav had been a part of TMKOC since its inception. While he had a month-long notice period, to his surprise, just after 15 days, Asit asked him through Sohil not to return to the set the next day.”

In response to queries about Modi possibly holding any grudge against her husband, Priya remarks, “Nobody leaves TMKOC on a good note.”

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah row: Sohil Ramani blasts Jennifer Mistry Bansiwal

Taarak Mehta... row: Sohil blasts Jennifer
Syeda Eba Fatima (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 24, 2023)

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah actor Jennifer Mistry Bansiwal filed an FIR levelling charges of sexual harassment against producer Asit Kumarr Modi, showrunner Sohil Ramani and executive producer Jatin Bajaj. Now, Ramani has hit back:

“If she had so many problems with the show and the producer, why did she come back in 2016? Nobody forced her. She messaged Asit bhai, ‘Main sudhar gayi hoon, sir mujhe ek mauka do’. I’m unable to understand her issues.”

Ramani’s surprised to be dragged into the FIR, calls it “a publicity stunt”. He rues, “I don’t understand what grudge she has against me. I was only doing my job. She misbehaved on set and left for personal reasons without informing us.”

Supporting Modi to take legal action against her, he says, “I’ve told the police everything in my statement recorded around 15 days ago. From CCTV footage to screenshots, we have proof”, but refuses to share them with us.

In response to Ramani’s current claims, Mistry retorts, “When I joined in 2016, I didn’t have too many major issues. But, problems started in October 2018 and in March 2019, Asit sexually harassed me. I also have call recordings of Sohil shouting and misbehaving with me.”

An FIR was registered on Monday night against the producer of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah Asit Kumarr Modi, executive producer Jatin Bajaj and operations head Sohil Ramani for sexual and mental harassment, based on a complaint made by Taarak... actress Jennifer Mistry Bansiwal.

She had made a complaint via email to the Joint Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Satyanarayan Chaudhary and DCP Maheshwar Reddy a month ago, citing mental and sexual harassment at the workplace. The makers of the show have refuted her allegations and called them baseless.

When we reached out to Senior Police Inspector Budhan Sawant of Powai police station, he said, “We have registered an FIR against Asit Kumarr Modi, Jatin Bajaj and Sohil Ramani of Neela Telefilms under sections 354 (A), 509 and 34 of IPC for mental and sexual harassment. Jennifer Mistry Bansiwal’s ‘faith in the justice system has been restored’, she quips, as an FIR was filed against Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah producer Asit Kumarr Modi on Tuesday, operation head Sohail Ramani and executive producer Jatin Bajaj on the basis of her sexual harassment complaint. She had recorded her complaint on May 24. Earlier, she said that he had made sexual remarks and that he’d allegedly invite her to have drinks with her.

Talking to us, she says, “Pehle yahi lag raha tha ki itna time kyun lag raha hai. Asit replied to my notice to my lawyer. Bahut blame game kiye hain.”

Bansiwal played the role of Roshan Singh Sodi in the comedy show and was replaced by Dilkhush Reporter some years ago. However, she came back. Bansiwal shares that even that was made into an allegation from Modi’s side. “They allege that Jennifer got to know Dilkhush was pregnant, so she took advantage of the opportunity and came back to the show. Okay, then why did you take me again? Also, Dilkhush was not pregnant then,” she says.

Mistry is ready to let everything go if “Modi apologizes” to her. “I don’t want this thing to become bigger. I hope he understands. I want this to end peacefully.”
