I loved Haribhai to death but he had one very irritating habit. He just couldn’t make it to shoots on time-Sharmila Tagore

Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore in a scene from Mausam (1975)

In a new biography on Hairbhai Jariwala aka Sanjeev Kumar, co-actor Sharmila Tagore remembers a stellar actor who drove her up the wall
MID-DAY (June 19, 2022)

I don't quite remember when I first met Haribhai. It was probably on the sets of Shandaar. He was already a big star. Our working equation began on a note of mutual respect and friendship. Shaandar was shot in 1974 in Chennai. The film industry there is extremely disciplined and strict about the language. Since Hindi is not their native tongue, they are very hesitant about changing even a single word of the dialogue that is sent from Bombay.

In one of the scenes, I had to say, “Mera dil huk uthega.” This to me sounded overly dramatic. I couldn’t identify with its sentiment. I got into a vehement argument. The director and the assistants tried to convince me that I had to say that line, but I wouldn’t listen. In those days there were no mobile phones, so they couldn’t get in touch with the dialogue writer in Bombay to suggest an alternative. Being a Bengali, I couldn’t come up with better suggestions either. This stalemate continued for a couple of hours at least.

Finally, Haribhai came up to me and whispered, “Rinku, [my nickname] do you want to stay here all night? It doesn’t matter, whatever the dialogue is, if you say it with the right emotion, I am sure you will sound convincing, and the scene will also work.”

I understood the wisdom of his words and did just that. That day I learnt an important lesson from him—that to make a scene work, one needs to cooperate. As long as you deliver your dialogue sincerely, the audience will also believe it.

Although I loved Haribhai to death, he had one very irritating habit—he just couldn’t make it to shoots on time. At one time, I was doing a double shift, Faraar in the morning and Mausam in the evening. In both the films, Haribhai was my co-star.

Those of you who have seen Mausam would know that I played a double role in the film. On my first day’s shooting as Kajri, I was extremely excited, and all keyed up. I was portraying this kind of a character for the first time and was really looking forward to the day’s shoot. I was ready with my make-up and dialogues by 2 pm, and guess at what time Haribhai came? 8 pm. I had been waiting for about six hours, and by the time we went to the set, I was exhausted and livid. I was so angry that I had a meltdown and said very nasty things to him, which had absolutely no effect on him. He remained totally calm, and that made me more angry.

Finally, Gulzar sahab, in a very conciliatory tone, said, “Can we at least take one shot?” Haribhai had no problem doing the scene. He did his part perfectly, and I, on the other hand, kept giving retakes after retakes. I don’t remember how the day ended, but again I learnt a valuable lesson—that you shouldn’t allow your temper to get in the way of your performance. We continued to work together for 14 hours a day, for Faraar in the morning and Mausam in the evening, but I refused to talk to him. I was still very angry.

Ten days went by, and I went to see Aandhi. I loved the film, and particularly Haribhai’s performance. The next day, when we were shooting for Faraar, I went and knocked on his dressing room door and told him, “You really are an awful person and very irritating but because you are such a brilliant actor I would like to shake hands and make up. Just one request, if you’re going to be late, please let me know so that I can adjust my time as well.”

He heard what I had to say calmly. If he felt anything, he didn’t show that, and of course, he didn’t apologize. But he had a twinkle in his eyes. I think our friendship became stronger from that day on. I had accepted him the way he was.

Once I visited his home. When I went to his room, I was so taken aback. It didn’t look like a ‘star’s’ room at all. Every inch of his bed, every chair was stacked with either his clothes or his papers; there was no place for me to sit. Finally, I asked, “Haribhai, where do you want me to sit? On the floor?”

So he transferred some clothes from one chair to another and made some space for me. This was his lifestyle. He was comfortable anywhere, whether in a crammed room or working with an annoyed co-star. Puffing away on his cigarette, which couldn’t have done him any good because there was a genetic cardiac problem in the family, he always managed to stay at peace with himself.

On many occasions, he came to our house. Tiger [Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, husband] liked him very much. They would drink and chat, and sometimes Haribhai would have one too many. I remember that, on one occasion, Haribhai had to hold one hand with the other to ensure that the spoon of food actually landed inside his mouth. He loved his alcohol. But he would ring up the next day to ask if he had misbehaved in any way. And I would tell him, ‘You only wiped your hands on the curtain. But not to worry, I will send you the laundry bill.’

On another occasion, I forgot his birthday. The next day at a shoot, I apologized to him for my lapse and wished him a belated happy birthday. One of our co-stars made a snide remark, “This is a very convenient excuse.”

But Haribhai instantly checked her and spoke in my defence, ‘If Rinku says it, she means it. She doesn’t make up stories like you.’ Which still makes me smile. I knew then that he really liked me.

He was extremely devoted to his family, and his mother meant the world to him. In between shots, among other things, he would discuss his marriage plans with me. His mother was looking for a bride for him, but he didn’t agree with his mother’s choice. He wanted someone who was beautiful and dignified and would understand and appreciate his work. In that context, he mentioned a couple of co-stars, but nothing ever came of them.

I hope I can be part of Baahubali 2-Karan Johar

Karan Johar talks about why he chose to present the magnum opus Baahubali in Hindi
Harshada Rege (DNA; July 13, 2015)

As a producer and director, Karan Johar has more often than not, backed winning projects. When he decided to present The Lunchbox, he once again proved that he has the right instincts. Last Friday, he lent his name to the Hindi version of SS Rajamouli’s historical epic Baahubali. It turned out to be a great move. The movie got rave reviews from the critics as well as audiences. Who’d have thought a dubbed film with no leading Hindi stars would get this kind of appreciation and box office figures? Well, KJo did for sure. Over to the Dharma man...

How did you come to collaborate on Baahubali?
It was Rana (Daggubati) who called me. I loved the parts that I saw back then. I feel honoured that they chose to associate with us.

Why associate with a movie at the later stage when the movie has not been greenlit by you?
I am a huge Rajamouli fan. I have seen most of his earlier movies like Eega. I was excited to bring Baahubali to the rest of the territories. I believe that every audience must get to view and experience this masterpiece. We’ve never had a movie made with this kind of technology, visuals and scale. We have had movie like Mughal-E-Azam made on that kind of scale, but those are hardly made these days. Rajamouli is a great filmmaker and we at Dharma are proud to be associated with a movie like Baahubali.

You presented The Lunchbox, which was a Hindi movie and a small budget one compared to this. Comment.
I know that language can be a barrier, but I also believe that a great film must be seen by everyone. Whether it’s The Lunchbox or Baahubali, it’s about movies with great content. And that’s my goal; to present good content to the audience. People often say that The Lunchbox was a movie that belonged to the parallel cinema category, but to me it was a great love story. Similarly, Baahubali is a great cinematic experience. Why should we restrict ourselves? We should see a movie for what it has to offer. People who like good cinema are going to like a movie irrespective of its language. And the kind of reaction and appreciation Baahubali has received is a great sign.

Baahubali will have a sequel?
Yes, people have been asking me to what happens next. It’s almost like a season break of a show where everyone is waiting to know what happens next. Those who have seen the movie can’t wait to see the rest of it. That’s the genius of Rajamouli.

Will you be associated with that as well?
I sincerely hope so.

On the telly front, buzz is that you will be taking over Comedy Nights With Kapil. True?
No. I don’t know where this rumour started from. It’s absolutely untrue. I can’t replace Kapil Sharma. I am not that stupid.

And there won’t be another season of Koffee with Karan this year?
After my current TV commitments, I will only be able to look at my work on television next year after I finish shooting Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

Shahid Kapoor and you are judging Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa together, but you haven’t really worked with him despite being in the industry for these many years....
We have Shandaar together, which Dharma is co-producing. Shahid is a superb actor and gifted dancer. He is someone who is absolutely qualified to be a judge on a dance show. Working with him has been a lot of fun. I think he made the right decision to come on board as judge for Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. People will now get to know him as a person even better. He has a great vibe and energy.

M S Dhoni - The Untold Story shoot pushed to July; release date taken over by Shandaar?

Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 26, 2015)

Mirror (June 15) had earlier reported how Sushant Singh Rajput has been training for four months for M S Dhoni—The Untold Story. From ballet to backflips, cardio to cricket, the actor is doing everything he can to look like MSD. The biopic was to roll on Thursday, June 25, but Mirror has now learnt that it will only go on the floors in mid-July. This means that the film which through its first teaser poster had promised a 2015 release and in January announced its release date as October 22, will not enter the theatres this year.

A source close to the development pointed out that it is not uncommon for biopics to extend their deadlines. And in this case, Sushant has had to undergo intensive training, as well as grow his hair long and then cut it short since Dhoni's look has changed dramatically in the last decade.

The research and scripting also took time. "They had to decide what personal and professional details to incorporate and what to leave out. A certain decorum has to be maintained as Dhoni is still a playing captain and has not retired from the game," argued the source, adding that even writer-director Neeraj Pandey was busy with his last film, the espionage thriller, Baby, till it opened on January 23.

Another reason for the delay is attributed to the tricky casting. "A lot of actors have to be cast, including those who will play sports icons like Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav Ganguly," added the source.

Were Dhoni's form and the backlash Team India has been facing after its recent defeats on overseas tours, also reasons for the makers to wait for a more opportune date? "No, that's not a concern. As long as Dhoni plays, he'll always give his best to Team India and will always be admired. The film will definitely come in 2016 though no date has been locked yet," the source retorted.

Arun Pandey of Inspired Entertainment, an associate company of Rhiti Sports, that has exclusive rights to Dhoni's story and is co-producing the film, when quizzed on the subject told Mirror, "Yes, it is true that the shooting of the official biopic of M S Dhoni will commence in July. We are fully ready now to roll and start the journey to narrate the inspirational story of the man, the legend, M S Dhoni."

Meanwhile, the Shahid Kapoor-Alia Bhatt romcom Shandaar which revolves around a destination wedding, late on Thursday booked the Dussehra release date that had fallen vacant.

Shandaar influenced Shahid Kapoor to go for a destination wedding in real life?

Subhash K Jha (DNA; June 11, 2015)

In Shandaar, Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt play a groom and bride, who have a destination wedding in Europe. Which isn’t too far from real life. Shahid, too, has opted for a destination wedding and ties the knot with Mira Rajput on July 10 in Greece.

All Shahid’s industry friends — producer Madhu Mantena, filmmakers Vishal Bhardwaj, Vikas Bahl and Kunal Kohli, composer duo Salim-Sulaiman, among others are all set to fly down. The entire entourage of friends and family leaves in the second week of July for Greece for the four-day wedding festivities.

Says one of Shahid’s close friends, “The entire wedding is in Greece and was planned by Shahid down to the last detail. We don’t know why he chose to marry outside India. Maybe it is the influence of the film that he has done with Alia. Shandaar mein destination wedding shoot karte hue Shahid ko itna mazaa aaya, ki woh apni destination wedding kar raha hai.”

Until now, the two haven’t ever been spotted together so after the wedding, Sasha is gearing up to formally introduce her to everyone in the industry. The source says, “Shahid will introduce Mira to the media fraternity in a formal event before Shandaar releases in September.” Though Shahid had admitted that he is getting married, he refrained from talking about Ms Rajput.

How Alia Bhatt lost and found her curves to fit into a bikini in Shandaar

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 14, 2015)

Wearing a bikini is no big deal for Alia Bhatt. She was seen in a sunny yellow two-piece in her debut film, Student of the Year. But her Shandaar director, Vikas Bahl, was clear he didn't want even an ounce of puppy fat. And the obedient student that she is, lil' Ms Bhatt took to cardio with a vengeance, topping it with hours of weight training. And within weeks, the 21-year-old actress presented herself to Vikas, looking like a "little boy".

Aghast, he ordered her to go get some curves, immediately. And Alia signed up with trainer Yasmin Karachiwala, who promised her that with a new diet plan and daily routine of aggressive pilates, she will bowl over her co-star Shahid Kapoor.

"Alia came to me last July and told me that she wanted to looking sizzling in a bikini for Shandaar. She was skinny but dedicated, refusing to eat anything but what had been recommended. And in three months she had the perfect body for the UK shoot, going from super-thin to gymnast body-thin," informs Yasmin, adding that she stopped Alia's cardio routine, then worked on her abs, arms, back and legs.

Alia, unlike Malaika Arora Khan and Deepika Padukone, usually goes off her diet and workout once the film is done but in this case, even after wrapping up the bikini shoot in Leeds, she's been training intensively for her next film, Udta Punjab.

"Apart from the coraline and trapeze, she has started working with the 'arcus', which is a big bow suspended in midair. This week, we will also begin with a superior form of exercise called the 'bodhi'. I'm presently working with an instructor from the US to understand the machine better, since this is the first time it will be used in an Indian fitness studio," says Yasmin, admitting that Alia is now a gym-addict. "She's young, hyperactive and always ready to try something new. There are days when I have to throw her out of the gym and tell her to cheat on her diet."

Alia agrees, saying she's in a long-term relationship with buddy Yasmin and fitness. "Pilates is new and challenging," she asserts. "Consistent training should help me reach my goal. I know I will get there soon, I just have to learn to be patient."

I was the first to suggest that Kareena was perfect for Udta Punjab-Shahid Kapoor

'Alia has quickly become a good friend'
Shahid Kapoor is reuniting with his Shandaar heroine in Abhishek Chaubey's next, which also stars Kareena Kapoor whose name he suggested.
Roshmilla Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 7, 2015)

"You want tea, coffee, cappuccino, drugs..." These are Shahid Kapoor's opening lines, delivered with a laugh. In cargos and Tee, his hair disheveled, the actor looks in character for Abhishek Chaubey's drug drama, Udta Punjab, which rolls in March. "I'm still see-sawing between Shandaar and Udta Punjab," he quips. "I hated it when I was called a 'college boy' and 'chocolate boy' hero. It was destroying me as an actor. By repeating yourself you can become a superstar, but I want to be a good actor first, like Charlie Chaplin, Jack Nicholson and dad, Pankaj Kapur."

He admits that in his 11-year-career, he's acted in some good and some bad films, prompted by decisions to conform to role models set by earlier stars rather than pure conviction: "Jab We Met and Kaminey helped me break out of the claustrophobic room. Then, I lost my rhythm again, till Haider came along."

At the time, Vishal Bhardwaj was unsure if they'd even get funding for this film. Shahid went along, swept by the collective passion. "Haider both depleted and enriched me as an actor. Today, I'm calmer, knowing that I'm capable of much more. I want to hold on to the purity and honesty. I'll listen to my heart and not my head," he says.

Last Sunday, he picked up Filmfare's black lady for his performance in Haider, his seventh award this year. And while he's enjoying the accolades, it was a relief to be told by the family at dinner that after a long time he was looking himself again. Prod him on Kaminey 2 and he sighs, "I don't think Vishal wants to make it now. Every time we meet, he narrates a new story. After Kaminey, we developed a great director-actor equation, after Haider, Vishal's become family. I listen to him the way I listen to dad. I wish he'd advise me on every film but he's busy."

So instead, he's got himself a new team, which includes producer Madhu Mantena, to sound him out. "Actors live in a closed world, we have a limited vision and shouldn't take decisions alone. It's wiser to talk less and listen to others more," he says for his brave new choices.

One of the out-of-the-box decisions was to sign Udta Punjab, helmed by Vishal's onetime assistant who his father had predicted during Maqbool would go far. Last year, Abhishek Chaubey was recommended to him strongly by the team at Phantom Films. "Abhishek wasn't looking to cast any stars but after seeing the Haider promos, they probably thought I might agree to do Udta Punjab though I was apologetically told it was nothing like anything I'd done before. That was a lure. As soon as I heard the narration, I told Abhishek that he wasn't going to anyone else and got the biggest hug from Anurag Kashyap," Shahid reminisces.

The film reunites him with former girlfriend Kareena Kapoor and could leave them open to awkward questions even if they don't have any scenes together. "What are the questions I haven't answered already? As an actor you have to find 20 different ways of answering the same questions," he says exasperatedly. "In fact, I was the first to suggest that Kareena was perfect for this role. I respect her as an actress. I'm happy she is living a good life. So am I."

Yes, it's obvious he's enjoying his bachelorhood. He's been spotted clubbing recently and is seen as the new Casanova in town. "After Shandaar, I'm on a three-month break and went out maybe four times in a fortnight. That was enough to make me a Casanova. Now, if a friend wants to catch a movie, I insist she call five others so we don't attract any fresh rumors," he grouses.

Yes, there's been talk about his Shandaar co-star, Alia Bhatt. "Alia is the most talented person I've met in my life. She's quickly become a good friend despite being much younger than me. I hope people understand and respect this and not try to misconstrue it," he says, admitting that he was somewhat unsure and insecure during the Shaandar shoot. "It's difficult when you jump genres. I kept asking Vikas and Alia if I was okay," he says.

Must be good to get his hair back after Haider's close shave? "Yes, though the first shower on my bald scalp felt so liberating," he smiles. "Now, I'm hoping to wear my hair long in the Magadheera remake which starts later this year. I've wanted to ride a horse with a sword in my hand and later this year I will."

Shahid's sister Sanah teams up with Pankaj Kapur again in Abhi Nahi To Kabhi Nahi

Sanah Kapoor teams up with Pankaj Kapur again
Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 15, 2015)

While Vikas Bahl's Shandaar, which will mark her debut as an actress is yet to release, Sanah Kapur, Shahid Kapoor's younger sister, has already bagged her next project. Shandaar also features her father Pankaj Kapur in a prominent role, and in her second film too Sanah will share screenspace with daddy.

A source told Mirror that the youngster has been roped in for a film titled Abhi Nahi Toh Kabhi Nahi, produced by Lara Dutta, her husband Mahesh Bhupathi and Virender Arora.

Said a source close to the development, "The film is a romantic, family comedy and it deals with four couples of varying ages and their love stories. While Sanah is part of the youngest couple, Pankaj, will be seen romancing a younger actress."

The source added that the makers are bullish on the actress and after a few rounds of narration, locked her for the part. "She represents the voice of the youth in a film that has people from all age groups," added the source.

The film also features Kay Kay Menon, Rajeev Khandelwal but will also see Lara Dutta in a prominent role. It is expected to go on floors in May this year and will be extensively shot in Darjeeling.

When asked if it was her father who recommended her for the role, our source said, "No, he didn't even know that she's been approached and it was Sanah herself who broke the news to Pankaj that she's doing yet another film with him."

Alia Bhatt, who had 3 releases in 2014, will have just 1 release in 2015

Subhash K Jha (DNA; January 5, 2015)

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, 2 States and Highway. What a year Alia Bhatt had in 2014! She managed to impress audiences as well as critics. But this year, she seems to be taking it slow. The 21-year-old has just one release lined up for 2015 — Shandaar with Shahid Kapoor, directed by Vikas Bahl, who helmed Queen, which made it to everyone’s ‘Top 3 Films’ list last year. Here, Alia talks about not working with her dad yet, why she is not worried about not being in her mom’s film and why her biggest high brought tears to her eyes. Read on...

Tell us about your films in 2015?
I’ve shot for just one film this year. So I’ll have just one release. And I’m okay with that. It just happened that way.

Are you looking forward to the awards for Highway?
Of course, I want awards. I don’t know if I’m going to get them. But I feel I’ve had a really blessed year. Recently, I was at an event at a college. And they were dancing to my song. That brought tears to my eyes. That was my biggest high.

Are you happy by nature?
I’ve a fear of being happy. Because I fear grief is around the corner. I am Piscean. And I am a complete drama queen.

Do you get stifled by constant attention?
No. When people stop looking at me is when I get really worried.

Do you enjoy travelling for shooting?
I am an inquisitive and excited traveller, so I do like to take time off to travel independent of work. And I will take time off to take a holiday every year. That’s a promise I made to myself. And visit a place I’ve not seen yet. The experiences that you create for yourself help you to grow as a person. I need those experiences to feed on. I am happy working hard and taking an annual holiday. And of course, my mom joins me for my shootings whenever she can.

Did your mom (Soni Razdan) join you for the shooting of Shaandar in Europe?
She was supposed to. But there was a change in my schedule and she couldn’t join me. Now she’ll get busy directing a film.So she’ll have no time for me.

Your mom is directing a film with other actors. Does that make you jealous?
Why should it make me jealous? I am just so excited that she is directing a film again. This film (Love Affair) has no role suitable for me. I wouldn’t like to be in it just for the heck of it. In our family, it doesn’t work that way. I still haven’t worked with my father’s production house.

My Most Awaited Bollywood Films Of 2015!

DIL DHADAKNE DO: Zoya Akhtar’s previous 2 films – Luck By Chance and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara – were terrific and Dil Dhadakne Do too looks damn exciting. The entire dysfunctional family and cruise elements can make for a great watch. And the star cast is just splendid.

FAN: Well, it’s a Shah Rukh Khan film and hence that’s enough reason to get excited for this one. But it seems that it won’t be a grand film and is in a more realistic space, directed by Band Baaja Baaraat director Maneesh Sharma.

PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO: Sooraj Barjatya is one of my favourite directors and I really love his sugar-coated family dramas! Hence, the expectations are huge from Prem Ratan Dhan Payo where he collaborates once again with Salman Khan. It’ll be interesting to see if he can still come up with a fine entertainer by retaining his trademark style in today’s times!

HAMARI ADHURI KAHANI: Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi haven’t had any memorable film in the recent past. And the tide can change for them with Hamari Adhuri Kahani, that also stars Rajkummar Rao. It’s directed by Mohit Suri and hence expect some soulful and brilliant songs! But what makes it the most special is that it’s scripted by Mahesh Bhatt and it’s inspired from his own life.

BOMBAY VELVET: Anurag Kashyap teams up with Ranbir Kapoor for this big budget and visually appealing flick, Bombay Velvet. More than being excited for Kashyap’s direction or Ranbir-Anushka Sharma pairing, I am all the more curious to see how the 60s Bombay have been depicted. Till date, none of the film has come up with the best portrayal of the city and I hope Bombay Velvet does that.

WELCOME BACK: I thoroughly enjoyed Welcome and hence, hoping that Welcome Back too gives viewers a great time. Yes, Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif will be missed but the ones who made Welcome such a great film – Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Paresh Rawal – are retained and moreover, Naseeruddin Shah joins the cast too, along with the leading actors, John Abraham and Shruti Haasan. And the film will also ‘welcome back’ talented actor Shiney Ahuja!

DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY: Byomkesh Bakshi is a legendary fictional detective and his film is keenly awaited for more reasons than one. It’s Dibakar Banerjee’s first film with Yash Raj Films. Secondly, it has Sushant Singh Rajput as the sleuth. Definitely a challenging role for the actor! Thirdly, from the teaser, it is evident that the film is shot in grand international style, which should make for a great watch!

TEVAR: Tevar has all the so-called commercial elements but doesn’t seem to be a typical masala film. Arjun Kapoor looks great and it’s nice to see Sonakshi Sinha in an author backed role. Also, Manoj Bajpayee seems to be in Raajneeti-type form! This is the first big release of 2015 and here’s hoping that it gives a great start to the year!

BABY: Neeraj Pandey, who gave us memorable films like A Wednesday and Special 26, is back with a bang with Baby that looks like a terrific, no-nonsense thriller in mainstream, commercial space. Akshay Kumar seems to be in top form. What’s intriguing is why the film is named so.

HAWAIZAADA: Hawaizaada attempts to enlighten viewers that 8 years before Wright Brothers flew the plane, a similar feat was already achieved by an Indian! It’s strange that most of us had never heard of this fascinating story. Ayushmann Khurrana seems impressive and really hoping the film works, especially for him. He’s a great actor and deserves all the success!

BADLAPUR: Sriram Raghavan is back in his ‘Johnny Gaddaar’ and ‘Ek Hasina Thi’ zone with Badlapur that promises to be a gripping revenge drama. Varun Dhawan seems to have worked quite hard. Yami Gautam, Huma Qureshi, Divya Dutta & Vinay Pathak too star in this thriller.

GUDDU RANGEELA: Subhash Kapoor who delivered Phas Gaye Re Obama and Jolly LLB will unveil Guddu Rangeela this year that stars Arshad Warsi, Amit Sadh and Aditi Rao Hydari. Nobody knows what the film is all about but it is expected to be a decent satire like Kapoor’s previous films

NH10: Anushka Sharma turns producer with NH10 which will also see her in the leading role along with Neil Bhoopalam. It marks the return of director Navdeep Singh who made the intriguing Manorama Six Feet Under. This one is more of indie revenge drama and it’ll be nice to see Anushka in such kind of cinema

PHANTOM: The working stills of the film that were released more than a year back have aroused lot of curiosity. It stars Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif, directed by Kabir Khan and based on S Hussain Zaidi’s unpublished novel.

MR X: Hamari Adhuri Kahani will hopefully give Emraan Hashmi critical success but it’s with Mr X where he’s expected deliver a huge hit. It’s a 3D film directed by Vikram Bhatt and has some Mr India-style elements. Vikram can come up with some great entertainers at times and here’s hoping he hits a sixer with Mr X!

ALL IS WELL: OMG Oh My God director Umesh Shukla will come up with All Is Well this year, featuring Abhishek Bachchan, Asin and Rishi Kapoor. Viewers would surely flock to theatres if this is yet another hard-hitting family entertainer and comic caper, like Shukla’s previous legendary endaevour.

BROTHERS: This is the remake of the well-made Hollywood film Warrior. The remake stars Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra and is directed by Agneepath director Karan Malhotra. The casting is perfect and the director is credible enough. Hence, Brothers can turn out to be one of the biggest and best films of 2015!

JAGGA JASOOS: Ranbir Kapoor will be seen as a nerdy jasoos in this Anurag Basu-directed film. It also stars Katrina Kaif and is expected to be a musical. And yes, there’s Govinda too!

TAMASHA: Yes, it stars Ranbir and Deepika Padukone, has music by A R Rahman and is shot in some great locales of Europe. But what makes Tamasha one of the highly awaited films is because of one simple reason more than anything else – Imtiaz Ali!

PIKU: Shoojit Sircar who entertained us with Vicky Donor is back with yet another light entertainer Piku. The casting (Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Irrfan Khan) is very impressive. Big B looks great in the film. Most of the film is shot in Kolkata which always makes for a great watch.

SHANDAAR: Just like Tamasha, Shandaar is highly awaited not because of star cast (Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Pankaj Kapur) or it being the first wedding destination film of Bollywood, but because it is made by Vikas Bahl, who gave one of the greatest films of recent times, Queen!

FITOOR: The title impressed me and also that it is based in Kashmir. Also, it is great to see director Abhishek Kapoor adapting a novel of Charles Dickens (Great Expectations) and has based it in heaven on earth. The star cast (Aditya Roy Kapur, Katrina Kaif, Rekha) is another exciting factor

TANU WEDS MANU SEASON 2: Tanu Weds Manu was a one-time watch while Raanjhanaa turned awry in second half. Yet, Tanu Weds Manu Season 2 is highly awaited for me as director Aanand L Rai rocks when depicting small-town India in all its glory. And this time there’s a double role by Kangana Ranaut, which should be interesting hopefully.

JAZBAA: I am a sucker for courtroom dramas and Sanjay Gupta’s Jazbaa should turn out to be a memorable film. What’s more, it marks the return of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. It also stars John Abraham, Shabana Azmi and Irrfan Khan.

ANWAR KA AJAB KISSA: This is another detective film of the year that is not being much talked about. It stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a lead role and is directed by acclaimed director Buddhadeb Dasgupta.

PETER GAYA KAAM SE: A film ready since a long time, it stars Rajeev Khandelwal and newcomer Lekha Washington. From the trailers, it seems like a riveting thriller and neat small film, something that UTV banner is known for. Have been mentioning this film every year in my ‘most awaited films’ list…hope next year, I don’t have to do so! Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zig5oim0SXU

Hope you like my list! Any comments, appreciation, criticism…feel free to post in the comments section!

After Shandaar, Alia Bhatt to pair up with Shahid Kapoor once again for Udta Punjab

Alia won’t rock, will get high instead
Alia Bhatt pairs up with Shahid Kapoor for a drugs drama, but drops out of Farhan Akhtar's musical
Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 19, 2014)

Mirror (December 4) had earlier reported that Alia Bhatt would star in the Rock On!! sequel. The makers were eager to have her on board as they wanted an actress who could croon her own songs.

The film's composers, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy were looking forward to recording with the actress with the 'terrific voice'. But Alia has had to let go off this coveted project because she starts shooting with Abhishek Chaubey in February.

The Ishqiya director is making a film on the rampant drug use in North India, titled Udta Punjab, with Alia as his leading lady. She has been cast opposite Shahid Kapoor who she has been romancing in Vikas Bahl's destination wedding film, Shandaar.

Says a source, "Alia has told the makers of Rock On 2 that she won't be able to accommodate their film and they have started the hunt for a new girl. Auditions are currently underway in as many as three countries."

When contacted, Abhishek Chaubey confirmed the news saying, "Yes, Alia and Shahid are on board. We go on floors in February."

He refused to go into details saying, "The film will release a year from now, so it's best if I don't talk about it now. All I can say is that the film will be high on drugs!"

While Alia had to opt out from Rock On 2 due to date issues, the film's leading man Farhan Akhtar let go of Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Raees to accommodate the musical.

The union is said to have refused to shoot till the entire payment is cleared. Srivastav adds, “They have this habit of holding onto the payment they cleared our Bombay Velvet payments only when Shaandar went on floor. We will not allow this to happen.”

A source from the union later informed us that the shooting for song-dance routine with Alia and Shahid resumed at 4 pm, after the producers of the film promised to clear the due by Monday evening.

Alia Bhatt unwell due to gruelling scheule of Shandaar; advised rest

Alia unwell, advised rest
The country-hopping schedule of Vikas Bahl's film has left Mahesh Bhatt's daughter in poor health.
Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 27, 2014)

After Priyanka Chopra (Mirror, November 26), it's now Alia Bhatt whose health is reeling under a packed schedule. The gruelling timetable of Shaandaar and the extreme cold in the UK and Poland has left Alia bedridden.

Mirror has learned that Alia returned home on Sunday and headed straight to the bed with high fever.

On Wednesday, her condition worsened and her doctor prescribed multiple tests to get to the root of the problem.

Buzz was, Alia had contracted appendicitis and was down with acute stomachache.

When contacted yesterday afternoon, a worried Mahesh told Mirror that they were waiting for the reports.

Later in the evening he cleared the air, saying, "Alia is feeling better. There is no cause for worry. All tests are clear. It was just fever and hyper acidity. Appendicitis has been ruled out."

Goes without saying that the 21-year old will be out of action for a few days.

A source close to the film revealed, "Alia was unwell for the past week, but she continued to shoot. Now that the schedule has ended, she can get some rest."

Shahid Kapoor gives papa Pankaj Kapur a close shave

Sasha gives papa a close shave
Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 30, 2014)

What happens when Pankaj Kapur's hair and make-up person fails to show up on the sets of Shandaar, which the actor is filming with son Shahid Kapoor in Leeds, UK? Well, the doting son makes up for the missing make-up dada.

Mirror has learnt that's exactly what transpired on location when Kapur Sr had to shoot a pivotal scene with Sasha.

Revealed a source, "Minutes before the shot was to be canned, Pankaj's hair and make up person was nowhere to be found. It was a scene which required him to have a trimmed beard. When his usual guy - whom Pankaj trusts a lot with the scissors - didn't turn up, there was only one person who could do the job - his son. Alia, who was present in the van, shot this candid picture while Shahid was doing the trim."

Confirming this, the film's director Vikas Bahl said: "Shahid was committed to get his dad's look right in the film. It was a beautiful father-son moment."

Shandaar, a destination wedding film, has Shahid and Alia playing wedding planners who are insomniacs. The film will mark the debut of Shahid's younger sister, Sanah Kapoor.

I want to do a biopic as I find myself boring-Shahid Kapoor

"I am not saying I am a boring person. I am a lot of fun. But I find myself boring that’s why I want to play different people"
Sarita A Tanwar (DNA; October 24, 2014)

Ranveer Singh is acting in Bajirao Mastani, Ranbir Kapoor is constantly in the news for doing a biopic on Kishore Kumar andor Sanjay Dutt. Salman Khan is making a film based on the life of a legendary wrestler, called Gama Pehelwan. Randeep Hooda is all set to essay Charles Sobhraj... Bollywood is turning to real stories in a big way. Biopics are the next big thing!

And Shahid Kapoor would be perfect for the genre, given how he loves to dive into his characters. So why hasn’t he done one yet? He says, “I would love to do it. I was thinking about doing one, because after playing a role like Haider, where you are creating and playing a character who is nothing like you, and having enjoyed it so much, I now want to do a biopic. I think such films give you an amazing opportunity to play a different person altogether. And that’s something that I want to do as often as I can in my career. It’s interesting because it kind of keeps that fire inside going as it’s always about playing someone’s life... which if you get it wrong, you are screwed.”

Also because the prep for a biopic must be really interesting...
I would like to play another person because I find myself boring, So I like to be different people.

You are not boring!
I swear, I think so... I am not saying I am a boring person. I am a lot of fun. But I find myself boring that’s why I want to play different people. You know what I am saying....

Yes, I understand...
I don’t want to play like... In Shandaar, I play a character called JJ who is different, but I keep asking Vikas Bahl) “Listen, I am doing something different, na. I don’t know why, I can’t explain it. I like playing characters which are so far away from who I am.

Please continue...
I think if I play myself in a movie, people will get really bored or I’ll get really bored playing it, I think I have reached that point where I feel everybody should go out there and try something different.
