Now I feel that having your person in life is beautiful-Rashami Desai

Onkar Kulkarni (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 25, 2026)
Rashami Desai says she has changed and it’s not a realization that came overnight. After years of non-stop work, travel and emotional investment in her career, the actress admits she is finally noticing parts of herself she never had the time to acknowledge.
“It has changed me. I am not the same person anymore. Maine apna bachpan aur jawaninahi dekhi, sirf kaam kiya hai. There is a void in my life in a certain emotional part if I see,” she says.
That awareness, she explains, didn’t come from introspection alone. It emerged while she was listening to others — couples, friends, partners — talk about love, trust and vulnerability. Rashami is currently hosting a conversation-based chat show titled Rashami Ke Dil Se Dil Tak, a role she says made her confront her own beliefs about relationships.
She is seen in conversation with celebrity couples. “If they have cried, dil se aansoo nikla hai. That conversation became so real that before they left, we asked them if they were okay with keeping it — and everybody said yes,” she says.
The show has pushed Rashami to unlearn what she thought she knew about love. “I had created myths and charts in my mind about love and friendship. It doesn’t happen like that. You have to trust each other and flow with it,” she says.
Despite being well-connected in the industry, she says getting guests wasn’t always easy. “I don’t take anybody for granted. Even my best friend didn’t come twice after giving dates. That’s when I realized — everyone has a choice.”
Spending time with couples has also stirred a longing she didn’t expect. “Now I feel that having your person in life is beautiful. I would definitely want to have that feeling — where you can be yourself, vulnerable,” she says.

The former actor says her decision to quit Bollywood and embrace a new life was personal, guided by her own choices—not her husband
HINDUSTAN TIMES (January 18, 2026)
Former actor and Bigg Boss 6 fame Sana Khan, who quit the film industry in 2020 and married Muslim cleric and businessman Mufti Anas Saiyad a month later, has spoken about the perception that she was “brainwashed” into leaving Bollywood after marriage.
In a recent interview with actor Rashami Desai, Sana said that she was already undergoing a personal transformation at the time. “When our marriage was arranged, it was a top secret. Nobody except my mum and dad even knew the groom’s name. Even when the mehendi artist asked for his name, I didn’t reveal it. I was going through a major change in my life. I was transforming into a whole new person. This is something that I wanted, and he is the one who guided me,” she said.
Sana added that people drew conclusions after seeing her adopt the hijab and step away from the industry. “People think, ‘oh she used to roam without a hijab, and suddenly she’s become so this that. So maybe this guy has brainwashed her’. It’s never like that; nobody can brainwash you until and unless you want it. I wanted peace. A person might find fame, money and status, but at the end of the day, everyone wants inner peace,” she said.
She also stated that she left films because “when your surroundings aren’t right, your decisions are often wrong”, adding that she now deeply values her relationship with her husband. Sana and Anas are parents to two children.
Mazaak, drama mat banaiyega-Shefali Jariwala's husband Parag Tyagi

HINDUSTAN TIMES (June 30, 2025)
Late actor Shefali Jariwala’s final rites were carried out on Saturday in Mumbai. Her husband, actor Parag Tyagi, was visibly shaken up over her unexpected and sudden death.
Meeting the media with folded hands, he requested privacy, asking people not to sensationalize their loss. He said, “Mazaak, drama mat banaiyega, main sabse request karta hoon. Please pray for my pari. Please pray for her peace. Please aap bandh kijiyega.”
On Saturday, when Parag visited the hospital after Shefali’s autopsy, he was seen begging paparazzi to leave him alone. Later in the day, he performed his wife’s last rites with her family, and friends at the Oshiwara Crematorium. Parag, Shefali’s father Satish Jariwala, her rakhi brother Vikas Fhatak aka Hindustani Bhau turned pallbearers.
Several visuals from the funeral surfaced on social media, in which Satish could be seen struggling to hold back tears as he consoled his wife, Shefali’s mum Sunita.
CAUSE OF DEATH STILL UNKNOWN
A day after her demise, police said the post-mortem was completed, but the cause of death remained inconclusive till the time of going to press. Doctors at Mumbai’s Cooper Hospital who conducted the autopsy reserved their opinion pending forensic analysis, prompting the police to register an Accidental Death Report (ADR).
Shefali was reportedly suffering from a neurological disorder, for which she was on medication. As per officials, preliminary findings suggest she may have suffered a cardiac arrest, but investigators were waiting for toxicology and histopathology reports. Blood and viscera samples have been sent to the Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory for detailed analysis.
ARTI SINGH’S EMOTIONAL NOTE
Shaken by her friend’s demise, actor Arti Singh penned a tribute alongside a collection of their pictures. Arti remembered being smitten by her in Bigg Boss 13, adding how Shefali took on the role of a sister during her wedding preparations.
She wrote, “I don’t want to say u hv gone to heaven or a better place. This was not the time to go only. U had to spread more smiles and happiness and love... U will always always always be my special friend… I know life is unpredictable but we tend to forget tht. I hate writing rip. I pray u are happy and your soul is happy. And your family get strength. I love u my SHEFU.”
RASHAMI DEFENDS PARAG
A video of Parag walking their pet dog hours after Shefali’s death met backlash, with some questioning whether he was affected.
Actor Rashami Desai posted on Stories, “Arreee bhaiya, let’s spread kindness and compassion instead of judgment! Simba was more than just a pet — he was Shefali’s beloved son. Her sudden passing leaves a huge void, and I urge the media to respect the family’s grief and give them space during this difficult time. Let’s show empathy and understanding, not sensationalism.”
Therapy helped me grow into a stronger individual-Rashami Desai

Kanksha Vasavada (BOMBAY TIMES; January 22, 2025)
Rashami Desai, who made her D-Town debut with Superstar in 2017, is back to Gujarati films after eight years. Rashami, who was recently seen in Mom Tane Nai Samjay, shares, “I am happy to see the changes in the filmmaking process and the kind of content being explored in our films now. I love watching Gujarati films and listen to their songs regularly. Our films have tremendous potential and I hope that we get equal support from our audiences too.” She adds, “Our audience has good spending capacity, so, all we need is to offer them good content.”
‘Wish to be welcomed more in Gujarati films’
Asked about why it took her so long to return to D-Town, she says, “While I was waiting for good scripts, I didn’t have many offers either. While our industry is exploring new subjects and genres, they should also give opportunities to other actors, instead of just working with the same set of people. There is such good content being generated now, and I keep wondering why aren’t we offered any? There are actors who have done a fair bit of work and have gained national recognition, but it feels sad when we aren’t given many opportunities in our own regional industry. Having worked in television for so many years, I wish to be welcomed more in Gujarati films now and I hope to receive the same kind of love and recognition here.”
‘My TV shows came out at the right place and at the right time’
Having worked in television for almost a decade, Rashami has primarily done unconventional shows with societal messages. Was that a conscious choice?
She says, “For me, the script is the most important thing. If I like the script, I’ll do it, and if I don’t, I won’t — phir chahe bahut paise bhi kyun na mil rahe ho uske liye. So, when Uttaran came along, the subject was very interesting, and people connected with it a lot. Even though Tapasya was a grey character, audiences wanted to see more of her. Similarly, during Dil Se Dil Tak, the concept of surrogacy and IVF wasn’t very popular, but it resonated with people who were experiencing it, which is why they related to Shorvari so much. I believe my shows came out at the right place and at the right time.”
'Therapy helped me grow into a stronger individual'
Reflecting on how seeking help has made her stronger, Rashami says, “I was overly committed to my work, working day and night for my shows. While people loved me as Tapasya (Uttaran) and Shorvari (Dil Se Dil Tak), it hurts when you realize they like your characters, not you. That’s when I started counselling, as I understood that achieving success is easy, but usko sambhalna over the years can be tricky. So, while I was working, I was also undergoing therapy, and that has made me a stronger individual today.”
Does it become difficult to talk about it? She says, “There is nothing wrong with sharing the current, actual phase you’re going through. Shows and their shelf life are temporary — that’s something I’ve learned through very tough times in my life. I’ve realized it’s fine even if no one stands with you, as long as you stand up for yourself and have belief and faith in yourself.”
Talking about changes in viewing patterns with rise in OTT, Rashami says, "While television content has changed a bit, viewing patterns have undergone a more significant transformation — and rightly so. Post-COVID, we’ve all become accustomed to watching shorter episodes, content that can be downloaded and watched while travelling, or shows that wrap up in just a few episodes. This shift has truly spoilt us for choice."
Sharing details about her upcoming projects, she adds, "I took a year-long break to escape the monotony of everything happening in my personal and professional life. But now, I’m back with a regional movie already released and a few projects lined up across different mediums, which I will be announcing soon. Although I have been working for so long, I still haven’t reached a stage where I’m okay with not working. I want to take on more projects with talented directors and work on stories with meaningful, real content — something that brings a shaant feeling to my artiste soul."

Rashami Desai, who is looking forward to her next film’s release, talks about lack of good work and long gaps in the her career in the last few years
Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 8, 2025)
For Rashami Desai 2024 was a learning experience. “There have been a lot of ups and downs in the last year and I faced a lot of personal challenges, so I was working on myself,” says the actor, adding, “Due to travelling, I faced some severe gut issues which were neglected and later became a bit severe. I should have actually acknowledged it at the time but while working, you tend push things aside. As a result, I developed food allergies, so I have to cautious about what I eat.”
‘I played a mom in Uttaran and faced consequences’
Starting the new year with a bang, she is looking forward to 2025 with excitement. “My Gujarati film, Mom Tane Nahi Samjay, will release soon and there are a couple of good projects lined up too. I would like to tell my Hindi audiences to come and watch the film as it has an amazing story. Though I was offered the role of a mother, and initially, I refused but after hearing the story, I knew I had to do it. I took up the mum’s role (in the Gujarati film) as it is dumdaar.”
She recalls her previous role as a mother and adds, “When I played a mum in (TV show) Uttaran, I had faced consequences as one gets labelled quickly in the industry. I played the role of Tapasya, who has a daughter, but people began seeing me as a mum and didn’t understand that I was playing a character. It took me a little while to change the perception and get rid of the label. I am not against playing a mum on screen but getting typecast is a hindrance. Yet that has not stopped me from picking roles when I really love the script.”
‘Kuch bhi karne se acha toh kuch mat karo’
The actor has “interesting roles and amazing projects” lined up this year including a Hindi film and a web show, but also admits that there have been some long gaps in her career due to lack of good work.
Talking about it, Desai says, “In the recent years, I have not been offered projects that excite me. From the ones offered, I wouldn’t like anything. I have tried to do experimental roles as well but while the script is interesting, what falters is the execution which isn’t up to the mark. I learnt the hard way to say no to bad work and wait patiently. Kuch bhi karne se achcha toh kuch mat karo. Mujhe achcha kaam karna hai. Money is very important but I’ve never worked for money. I am waiting for good work, with a capable director and good content. In between, I did Bigg Boss too but then the pandemic happened which led to a long gap between projects. So many people would meet me and say, ‘Aap kitna acha kaam karte ho. Aap ke saath kaam karna hai’ but nothing would materialise. It would be just talk.”
‘Nothing is working on television’
The actor has been the face of many popular TV shows but isn’t happy with the current content on the small screen. She says, “I strongly feel that on TV the current phase will continue for a while. Nothing is working on television. So many creators are trying different concepts but so many shows are shutting shop within three months. Writers are creating good stories, directors are pushing for their vision and actors are giving their best but there is something amiss and that’s why its not connecting (with the audience). TV par choti choti cheezen important hai, sab emotions highlight hote hain. It’s all about details.”

The actor talks about reviving her career in movies and stepping out of her comfort zone
Navya Kharbanda (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 22, 2024)
Rashami Desai might be a mainstay in the television industry, but not many know that the actor made her Bollywood debut with Yeh Lamhe Judaai Ke (2004) five years before joining the cast of Uttaran, a show that propelled her to fame.
Desai, who was seen in the recently released film, Jahangir National University (JNU), admits that while her Bollywood career did not take off at the time, she feels it has finally picked up pace.
“I have always believed that good things take time and patience. Sometimes, in order to accelerate in life, you need to move in reverse first,” says the actor, who is labelling the film as the “beginning” of her film career. “A lot of fans and critics appreciated JNU. So yes, this is the beginning but there’s a long way to go and I am all up for it,” she tells us.
Ask if her stint in television might have hampered her trajectory in films and Desai replies, “It’s about how you look at the situation, instead of just labelling it as an obstacle. But yes, when you have been acting in television for a long time, there is a certain sense of acceptance from your audience. Breaking away from that comfort zone into unknown territory is always difficult and a brave call.”
The 38-year-old acknowledges that it has been a rocky ride, but shares that she’s looking forward to whatever comes her way. “It’s been difficult but nothing is really impossible if you have clarity about your approach,” she says, adding, “Eventually things work in your favour; I am now looking forward to working harder and doing better work in cinema.”
Desai also reveals that she has multiple Bollywood and OTT projects in the pipeline. “There’s quite a lot that’s happening. I am not in a position to talk about any of it till the official announcements take place, but yes, I am really excited about this phase as an actor,” she ends.
Nandish Sandhu felt ‘cornered’ after divorce from Rashami Desai

HINDUSTAN TIMES (July 15, 2024)
Actors Nandish Singh Sandhu and Rashami Desai tied the knot in 2012, but their marriage hit a rocky patch, leading to their divorce just three years later. In a recent interview, Sandhu opened up about how he felt unfairly judged by everyone when the separation happened.
“I felt everybody was pointing fingers at me. Everyone was looking at me like a culprit. There were things being said in the media about me—that I was physically abusive; I was a Casanova. I started feeling cornered. And it took a toll on my professional decisions too,” he told YouTuber Siddharth Kannan.
Regarding Desai’s public statements post-divorce, Sandhu noted, “She never clarified anything. We’re not friends because I felt a little hurt about certain things that she said in interviews.”
During the chat, the 42-year-old also recounted their initial meeting on the sets of the TV show Uttaran, where their friendship blossomed into love. “At the time, I felt like I was at the top of the world, making good money, earning love and being with ‘the one’,” he recalled, confessing that being “young and not very wise” back then led to their split. “Our thoughts, vision and temperament were not the same. I think it was a wise decision to go our separate ways. When we started living together after getting married, we realized we were not compatible,” he added.
Ranveer Singh’s ad humiliates TV-Rashami Desai

Mimansa Shekhar (HINDUSTAN TIMES; February 15, 2024)
Actor Rashami Desai, who is a popular face on TV, is not happy with a recent advertisement featuring actor Ranveer Singh and adult film star Johnny Sins about a men’s sexual healthcare brand. The ad is a parody on a typical Indian daily soap, involving a joint family. She slammed the ad on Instagram, calling it “an insult” to the television industry and wrote: “This all happens on the big screen.”
Clarifying that her anger is not directed towards the actor but the content, Desai tells us, “My words are clear, it’s not about Ranveer Singh.” She continues, “We’ve never shown such things on TV. People always make a mockery of the small screen, but they come here when they need to promote [films]. TV has the biggest reach, but it is also demeaned the most. There’s no respectful balance.”
The ad promotes the men’s sexual wellness brand in a Hindi family drama serial setup, complete with a joint family discussing a couple’s issues. Singh and Sins play the two brothers who discuss one of the brand’s products.
Rashami started her television career with the mythological drama series Ravan in 2006 and has been a part of popular shows including Uttaran and Naagin 4 and reality shows. Asserting her reaction to the ad, the 37-year-old opines that TV “represents our culture in a lot of ways”.
The Tandoor actor adds, “Outside India, people see and understand our culture [via TV shows]. I have a huge respect for the medium, because the name, fame, money, love and respect I got for my work has been from TV industry.”
I want to work in Bollywood now-Rashami Desai

Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; November 1, 2023)
It’s been a hot minute since Rashami Desai was seen on the small screen and it has left people wondering about her absence. The actor tells us that she is trying to break into Bollywood and has been “very selective about the projects” she takes up.
“As an actor, I want to explore more (different types of projects and roles) and I have to be patient as things won’t go my way overnight. Everything happens at its own pace. Since I started my acting career, I’ve learnt that kuch achcha chahiye toh usmein waqt lagta hai,” shares the 37-year-old, who was last seen in Naagin Season 6.
Having gained popularity with the TV show Uttaran, Desai has done some work in films like Dabangg 2 (2012) and Superstar (2017) . However, she says, “I want to work in Bollywood. I have been dreaming about this for years.”
Ask if she frets that her fans would forget her if she doesn’t keep working and the actor says, “When I used to do TV, I would take a gap of three to four years [between each show]. I wasn’t scared of what would happen if I wasn’t seen. Out of sight, out of mind is a myth. I am just going with the flow.”
It is unfair to drag my family and abuse or troll my parents-Rashami Desai

Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; September 21, 2023)
Rashami Desai recently posted a video online addressing the negativity that has plagued her life on social media. The actor, known for her roles in shows such as Uttaran, says the breaking point came when she witnessed her family being targeted in the filthy mess of the virtual world.
“To all the jobless people out there, I want to tell you all, please don’t pick on my mother and father. I know what I am doing; it’s my life,” the actor said in the video posted on X.
Reflecting on the incident, the 37-year-old tells us that trolling has become alarmingly normalized across the digital landscape, regardless of one’s profession, whether actor, businessperson or politician.
“In my case, everyone (on social media) comes and says something about my life, which leads to discomfort in the lives of people close to me. Recently, I saw a tweet where the user was abusing my mother, and that is what pushed me to put out the video. Everyone is telling me what to do and then talking bad about my family. I was hurt by what I read and thought I needed to put an end to it. It is unfair to drag my family and abuse or troll my parents,” shares the actor.
Desai firmly asserts that it was high time she stood up to the trolls who sought to dictate her life choices.
“I know what I am doing. I have been working hard for so long. I am a self-made woman, capable of making my own decisions. I appreciate their concern, but it was becoming insulting,” the actor says, adding, “In fact, every artiste knows how to navigate their social media... People need to stop being mean and so self-centred.”
That being said, the former Bigg Boss contestant admits that she understands the realities of life and is “open to criticism”. “We can’t stop trolling. People will always have something or another to say. They might hate you or love you. And there is no denying that I get a lot of love from everyone. I don’t expect trolling to not happen, but I expect there to be a limit on the same,” she says.

During her solo trip to the USA recently, Rashami Desai realised there’s more to life than just work
Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 17, 2022)
Recently, Rashami Desai set off on a month-long solo vacation in the USA and the actor admits that the getaway was important for her to reconnect with herself and reflect on her life choices. “It was a much-needed vacation, something I was planning for the past two-three years. Ghoomna phirna had always been my last priority, which made me a different person. During this trip, I realised life is so much more. I got to spend more time with myself,” says the actor.
Sharing her realisations, Desai adds, “Sometimes, you do things (work) at the best places, wear the best clothes, have everything in your hand, but uske baad kya? [During the trip I realised that] kal ko agar main kaam nahin karungi aur the Rashami Desai nahin rahungi, toh kya! I found my choices and answers.”
The 36-year-old adds that she has been working since she was 16 and the Coronavirus pandemic gave her the time to reflect on her life. “I realised I had only been working and running. Maine life mein bahut kuch miss kiya hai, but I want to explore new things now. A creative mind needs a break and I forgot that. Now, I am feeling good, independent and comfortable,” she says.
Interestingly, Desai didn’t just travel alone, but also went backpacking: “Going solo was scary, because Covid-19 is still around and I kept thinking, ‘What if I contract the virus while travelling? I’d have no one to take care of me’.”
From protecting herself from bag snatchers to experiencing the thrill of bungee-jumping, the actor says she learnt to conquer her fears. “For the first time in my life, I did not travel luxury. Everything was in one backpack. I would get scared sometimes… In fact, ek baar mera samaan snatch hote-hote bacha,” the Dil Se Dil Tak actor ends.

Akash Wadhwa (BOMBAY TIMES; November 23, 2021)
Rashami Desai’s personal life was much in focus during Bigg Boss 13, two years ago. She has entered the house again as a wild card contestant in Bigg Boss Season 15. Before entering the house, the actress had a quick chat with us on her game plan, how tough it is to enter a show mid-way and if she is open to finding love. Excerpts:
How prepared are you to enter as a contestant again in the Bigg Boss house?
During my season (Bigg Boss 13), we used to fight a lot, just like the present lot of contestants, but we weren’t disrespectful towards each other the way these contestants are. We would mostly fight during tasks, and task ke baad bhi agar hamari fights hoti thi toh there would be proper reasons for it. I sometimes feel that the current contestants take out too many personal grudges on the show.
How different will you be this time around in the house?
Everyone has been asking me this. I am going in hoping to win. It is rare that a wild card entry has won the show, but I hope it happens. I don’t know how the audience is going to accept me in the middle of the show. Let’s see.
Do you have any favourite contestants inside the house?
I have been very close to Tejasswi Prakash; we have been friends outside the house. But when you are inside, that too as a contestant, the situation becomes different. I also like the way Shamita Shetty communicates with people inside the house. I like Neha Bhasin, too. But jab aap season ke beech mein enter karte ho toh some people tend to demean you. Neha ne usko bahut achhe se handle kiya hai.
Are you open to finding love inside the house, or are you twice bitten and forever shy?
I am not saying I am not open to finding love. However, that comfort with someone is very difficult to find because of my experiences in life. Jab jab jo jo hona hoga tab tab so so hoga. Jab aap kisi cheez ke liye na karte ho toh kudrat aap ke saath khelti hai, so it is better ki woh karo jo kudrat karwaye. I am not looking for love, but if it happens automatically, I will go with the flow.

Asim Riaz, Arjun Bijlani, Rashami Desai, Arti Singh and Rakhi Sawant were among those who bid the actor a tearful farewell. Aly Goni, who was seen visiting Sidharth’s family with girlfriend Jasmin Bhasin on Thursday evening soon after they returned from Ladakh, was among those seen at his residence yesterday morning. Nikki Tamboli was accompanied by Vikas Gupta, while Prince Narula came with his wife Yuvika Chaudhary.
AUTOPSY DONE, NO OFFICIAL REPORT YET
The actor’s autopsy was completed on Thursday night and according to reports, “no external or internal injuries were found”. The viscera report, which determines the cause of death when autopsies are unconvincing, is still on hold. The doctors have reserved their opinion on the post-mortem, as per reports.

‘SHEHNAAZ IS INCONSOLABLE’
Some unverified reports have quoted Shehnaaz Gill’s father Santokh Singh Sukh as saying that she is inconsolable and that she told him Sidharth “died in my arms”. However neither Shehnaaz nor the family have confirmed the same.
Industry friends posted messages on social media, urging Shehnaaz to stay strong. Aly wrote “Chehra jo hamesha haste hue dekha.. khush dekha… lekin aaj jaisa dekha bass dil toot gaya stay strong sana,” while Jaan Kumar Sanu said, “Aaj jo dekha, yakeen karne mein waqt lagega. Stay strong Shehnaaz.” Rahul Mahajan, who visited Sidharth’s residence to pay his last respects, was quoted as saying that Shehnaaz has gone “completely pale as if a storm had just passed by and washed away everything.”
-----------------
‘SIDHARTH WAS UNEASY AT 3 AM’
Initial reports stated that Sidharth told his mother that he was feeling uneasy at around 3 am on Thursday, as per a source close to the family. “His mother gave him some water and he went back to sleep. However, in the morning Sidharth did not get up. His mother tried to wake him up, but he did not respond. His mother called his sister, who called the doctor, who declared him dead and asked them to take the body to the hospital immediately,” said the source.

The actor opens up on her transition from television to the OTT space; adds that it takes time to establish oneself in a new and different medium
Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 2, 2021)
Having made a name for herself on television, Rashami Desai has now transitioned to the digital space. The actor, who recently debuted on OTT, admits that she got many offers but wasn’t quite convinced about them. “When you do a show on OTT, not just your character but the subject is also important. Often, a word-of-mouth publicity works for digital projects, so one has to choose wisely. And, I have to say it has been a fabulous experience,” says Desai.
She further adds, “I wanted to explore OTT as an actor as I have many dreams which I want to fulfill. I want a National Award and I am working towards it. Mujhe nahin pata kitni lambi journey hogi, kaise hoga par koshish karungi. It has been a dream for a long time. Earlier, I was working on television, which is a beautiful platform and will remain evergreen, but every medium has its own interests, audiences and viewership. I respect that.”
The Uttaran star admits that she is ready to learn new things and feels she is limitless: “It does take time to convince me to do something. I have learnt from my mistakes and have become more choosy than before.”
While a number of actors have transitioned from TV to films and OTT, it is no cakewalk. Talking about her experiences, Desai shares, “After having reached a certain stature in life, when you have to switch to another medium, it irks many. It takes time to establish yourself in a new arena. Today, if I leave acting and start a business, people won’t line up for my product just because I am Rashami Desai. It will take time to set it up.”

Even as tributes continue to pour in, his death has spurred talks around mental health and the insider-outsider debate in Bollywood. His friends and industry colleagues weigh in on if anything has changed in the last one year
HINDUSTAN TIMES (June 14, 2021)

Rashami Desai, Actor
Sushant was a strong and hardworking person, and uski barabari kisise nahin ho sakti. Ever since Sushant’s death, a lot of people have come forward and admitted that they need help. They are talking openly about mental health, what it means and trying to create awareness about it. Moreover, since the last one year, there is a lot that has happened in the world and in the entertainment industry - from uncertain future, to lack of jobs, no money, health issues etc. People have started understanding why communication is important. Yet, we have a long way to go. People need to understand what mental health issue is. We have to learn that self-love is important too.

If you’re putting out a story against someone’s character, then it’s important that you verify your facts and have the courage to name the subject at least. Sushant was called a skirt chaser, an alcoholic, unprofessional and arrogant in blind items that described him but didn’t name him. He was even accused of molesting a co-actor in one blind piece, but there were no complaints, allegations or proof of any of this in the real world. Yet the damage was done, and he had to stay up several nights, desperately defending himself to the world. I hope this never happens to anyone again. I am also closely watching the new media narratives about Kartik Aaryan and noticing that things are being said about him without any verification from him.

It was a good thing that so much came out, there were so many inequalities in the industry. Sushant’s death brought out so many thing prevalent in the industry, but I am not sure if anything has changed. But my counter to this is, how much change has it brought? Have deserving people started getting work? Has it become easier for them? I don’t think directors have started taking calls of nobodies. I don’t want to name a filmmaker, he came to me during the pandemic last year, and said ‘I love you as an artist, there is no chance I am not going to give you work’. It’s been then and now, he is not answering my calls. It’s unfortunate. I am not sure anything has changed.

People have unrealistic expectations about Bollywood. It’s a cut-throat business. There is a severe lack of professionalism at different levels and there’s an unsaid hierarchy. This is no meritocracy. Very few people understand the nature of this business and that’s where all the trouble lies. Sushant was a bright star and had a fantastic career. I wish I had his career. Conversations on camps and lobbies have increased. A lot of people felt empowered to share what they feel about this business, may be out of vengeance, motivation or to just shake things up. It’s undeniable that his unfortunate demise has given many people the courage to speak out. What we’ve also realised is that there are power structures and they are fighting to destroy and decimate each other.

Samir Soni, Actor
At the end of the day, we are talking about show business. It will be about profit maximization. Whoever is investing money wants to make more money. A lot of people say ‘merit counts’. That way, Naseeruddin Shah and Late Om Puri should have been the highest paid actors in the country. Market decides that. If I were to make a film and had enough money, I wouldn’t play the central character, I know people will crowd theatres to watch someone more saleable. Talks around such things have come up in the past year. Everyone’s heart goes out. To me personally, Sushant is a success story.

Dheeraj Dhoopar, Actor
Whatever happened last year was a very sad thing, and we all should understand one thing that actors are also human and have emotions, who have our professional targets and commitments. There are times when people just start judging actors or mocking them when we post something on social media, without thinking that there may be a reason behind it. The world should be less judgmental and more understanding. When it comes to the culture of blind items, I cannot say ke kitna change hua hai, but at least people have started talking about it and calling it out, which is a good thing.

Amol Parashar, Actor
There were conversations about the inner lives of young actors, the pressures they live with on a daily basis and the demons they fight away from the public eye. A lot of friends and well-wishers reached out to me as they must have for every young actor out there. In a few days though, the conversations became convoluted, and instead of sympathising with his colleagues and friends who were dealing with the loss, some sections of the media turned it into a headless witchhunt. Hope we can bring back some empathy into our conversations about young people’s internal struggles especially in an industry that keeps you on your toes all the time.

Fans keep SSR’s legacy alive

Susanta Ray, wax sculptor from Asansol, West Bengal
Both my daughter and I were huge fans of Sushant Singh Rajput. I liked him because he is my namesake and also he was a great actor and we’re both artists. I felt some sort of connect with him because of that. When I heard the news of his death I was shocked, I just could not believe and I then decided that I have to honour him in some way. That is when I decided to make his full length wax statue. There is no wax statue of Sushant anywhere in the world. This is a very popular attraction at my museum and people from all over come, especially so many of his fans, to get a picture clicked with the statue. This is my tribute to Sushant and something that is going to always remain special for me.
Shivangi, administrator of a fan club
Emotionally, it has been the toughest time. But I thought of starting something in his name to honour him. He has always been a big-hearted person and as his fans, we need to carry that forward. So, I started this initiative wherein I have been making stuff and selling them. Earnings from the drive are being used to feed the needy. I have distributed food items among the homeless. Many fans of SSR have helped us in this initiative, they have contributed regularly. For now, we want to continue our efforts.

The entertainment industry has been open-minded about mental health for many years now. Younger professionals seek help when needed but sadly, there is a lot of stigma about it. In the last one year, since Sushant’s death, I feel the visual media has neutralised this advantage by irresponsible reporting. In the TRP war, mental health awareness suffered and caused a lot of pain to those who were already under treatment for depression. As a mental health professional, I think, the focus on mental health since Sushant’s death can be described as the darkest period of the mental health movement.
The influential people get better projects and better space. It is humiliating-Rashami Desai

Rashami Desai says TV actors, despite the availability of new mediums, are still sidelined by many in the industry
Juhi Chakraborty (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 10, 2021)
Conversations about how the lines are blurring between mediums with no more demarcations for actors have been going on for a while, but Rashami Desai says the ground reality is still different. Desai, who has dabbled with films, TV and web, is primarily known for her stint on the small screen.
“When I get categorised for certain platforms and they say that yeh toh TV actress hai, toh bura lagta hai. People don’t want to see the good work I have done,” she says.
Further calling out the biases that exist against TV actors, she says, “They’re open for new people but humein TV actors bolke kaam nahi dete hai. The influential people get better projects and better space. It is wrong. I don’t like it. It is humiliating and insulting.”
Desai, who has been a part of Hindi, Bhojpuri and Gujarati films, adds: “Even people in TV will not respect TV actors so much. They treat you like you are not good, and they give preference to film actors. But I have learnt that you have to demand for it and when you demand, they do it,” she says.
On why she thinks many from TV fail to make their mark in Bollywood, the actor says, “Being a part of Bollywood has a different flavour. But actors have to be very patient. Sometimes everything is finalised and the last moment because of a call, you get replaced. But hats off to such TV actors who make a transition from TV to films. Now I am happy that people are open to taking actors from TV in web and films,” she concludes.
I merely reacted to Rakhi Sawant’s comments about my face, body & the way I look-Jasmin Bhasin

Evicted from Bigg Boss 14, Jasmin Bhasin on her ‘nose job’ fight with Sawant and partner Aly’s chances of winning show
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; January 12, 2021)
Ousted after merely 100 days, Bigg Boss 14 contestant Jasmin Bhasin says she has no regrets — instead, the Dil Se Dil Tak actor is looking forward to eating her favourite food and pampering herself at the salon now that her confinement is over. While her eccentric behaviour and romance with Aly Goni kept the viewers entertained, she also received flak for crying at the drop of a hat and being a drama queen. In a chat with mid-day, Bhasin addresses it all, one controversy at a time.
Edited excerpts from the interview:
Did you expect your eviction?
Honestly, I thought I would make it to the finals, but the show is unexpected and one doesn’t know when his/her journey may end. Having said that, I am not upset because I wanted Aly to stay in the race.
Where do you stand on your equation with Rubina Dilaik?
Rubina and I are not friends, but I have no hatred towards her. I will be cordial if I ever meet her again.
Has your relationship with Eijaz Khan improved?
In the last two weeks, Eijaz has been calm, quiet and less aggressive. I have seen a different Eijaz every week [laughs]. So, I still don’t know him well enough.
Your parents do not seem to approve of Aly. Does that impact your relationship with him?
Their comment [when they visited the house] has been taken out of context. My parents met him once, much before the show came our way, and loved him. They believed that I should play a solo game in the house and not depend on anyone. [Their observation stems from] the episode where I was ousted from the captaincy task because he was trying to help me, and in the process, we broke a few rules. My parents would be thrilled to see us together forever.
Rashami Desai accused Aly of bullying Vikas Gupta. Do you concur?
It is wrong of Rashami to use the word ‘bullying’. Aly is not capable of doing something like that. After they had an argument, Aly profusely apologised to Vikas, who responded rudely. I know Rashami is not fond of me. Had she [made the bullying remark] in front of me, I wouldn’t be kind with my words.
Do you think you crossed the line when you brought up Rakhi Sawant’s rhinoplasty?
I did not start that conversation. It was purely a reaction to Rakhi’s comments about my face, my body and the way I look. She said unwarranted things about me, and I reacted. I would never bring up someone’s cosmetic surgeries because in the future, I may opt for them. I believe there is nothing wrong with surgically enhancing your looks if it makes you happy.
Apart from Aly, who do you think may bag the trophy this year?
Rubina can take the trophy home because she is a clever and manipulative woman.
During such times, wrong use of words has adverse effect-Rashami Desai

Shreya Mukherjee (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 10, 2020)
Rashami Desai feels “self-love, acceptance and forgiveness” are the three things that can bring about a difference in this world. On the occasion of World Mental Health Day today, the actor urges everyone to be compassionate. Desai, who has never shied away from talking about her battle with depression, says that it’s time we remove the stigmas attached to mental health issues.
“People need to understand that words are powerful. What you say might affect others. It’s sad how people don’t think twice before misbehaving. We’re going through unpredictable times, this sudden change in our life has added so much stress. During such times, wrong use of words has adverse effect,” she says.
From her own experience, Desai says that we all take so many responsibilities in “our lives that we tend to forget ourselves” amid everything.
“And then, when something happens we get disturbed easily. Give yourself time. Love and respect yourself. Before seeking happiness outside, search within you. Do whatever makes you happy. Meet new people, travel, read, sleep or do nothing. Don’t just stick to social media. Real life is amazing,” she adds.
Desai is happy that discussions around mental health are now considered normal. “There’s still a long way to go. Many are yet to recognize the gravity of mental health issues, which is why people still fear to talk about what’s bothering them. That needs to change and it can only happen if we all come together. Treat every day as mental health day and deal with your life accordingly,” she concludes.
Small screen’s big leap of faith: Shooting for some TV shows has resumed, with efforts underway to iron out glitches

Prashant Singh and Shreya Mukherjee (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 25, 2020)
Soon after the Maharashtra government gave the nod for TV shows to resume shoots and issued guidelines for the same post the Coronavirus lockdown, makers and channels started prepping to return to work. In fact, two Hindi shows — Pyar Ki Luka Chuppi and Shakti - Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki — resumed shooting on June 23. However, before others could follow suit, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) and Cine And TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) halted shoots stating certain guidelines weren’t met, including working hours, insurance cover etc. But after a meeting between FWICE, CINTAA and Indian Film & Television Producers’ Council (IFTPC) on Wednesday, shoots will now resume.
Pawan Kumar, producer-director of both these shows, says, “We’re adhering to guidelines. If there are any changes needed, we’ll try and incorporate. We can’t stop shooting because so many people right now need the job.” Kumar adds shooting for Santoshi Maa - Sunayein Vrat Kathayein and Jag Janani Maa Vaishno Devi - Kahani Mata Rani Ki and two upcoming shows will resume shortly and that all six are being shot in Ramdev studio, Naigaon. “The entire set and nearby areas are being sanitised every 30 minutes. Everyone is wearing masks, face shields except the actors. The cast and crew are staying in Naigaon,” he says.Similarly, the cast and crew of Devi Aadi Parashakti reached Umbergaon, Gujarat, where they were quarantined. “Our two weeks got over on June 23 and we’ll start when everyone’s ready. We’re in a complete green zone and we’re taking extra precautions. Siddharth and Rahul (Kumar Tewary; producers of the show) are ensuring safety,” says actor Tarun Khanna.
J D Majethia, actor-producer and chairman (TV & web), IFTPC, shares they’ve received permissions from locations in and around Mumbai — Film City Chitra Nagari, Mira Road, Thane, Palghar etc. Hence, shooting for other shows may start from Thursday once they sort out insurance issues. “For now, we’ll avoid marriage and party scenes. In the long run, we’ll restructure the industry’s working pattern,” he says.Meanwhile actor Rashami Desai might shoot for the finale of Naagin 4 on June 26. Next in line to resume could be Kumkum Bhagya. In fact, most are eager to resume shooting, but with caution. While actor Varun Badola is ready to shoot for Mere Dad ki Dulhan, he’s concerned as he lives with his old parents. “So, I just want everything in place on the sets. One person can infect anyone,” he says.
Echoing the concern, Amit Behl, joint secretary and chairperson, outreach committee, CINTAA, shares, “Shooting started in West Bengal, but they had to stop as things went wrong. It was the same in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Most studios in Maharashtra are in containment zones, a majority of studio floors are very cramped. So social distancing may pose a challenge.”However, Tanusri Dasgupta, executive vice-president, Balaji Telefilms, confirms shooting of all their shows would start together and “we’ve already done mock drills to ensure there are no complications”. Others too contend “things have already been sorted” with insurance companies. They feel the idea “is to not just keep the cast and crew healthy but confident”. “And it’s very important because that will directly impact productivity and quality of work,” says Sumeet Mittal, producer of Barrister Babu and Shubharambh, which are expected to resume shooting today. “My crew for both shows will stay on the sets so there is minimal interaction with the outside world,” he says.

Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; May 25, 2020)
Television show Naagin 4 is all set for a revamp soon after the Coronavirus lockdown ends. In fact, the actors of the supernatural show have already been informed about the development. Apparently, most of the current cast will be out, including Nia Sharma and Rashami Desai, and a new set of actors will enter the show.
A source said, “Shoots have been stalled for over two months now and every TV show has been affected. Discussions on Naagin 4 have been going on between the production house and the channel for a while now.”
Meanwhile, there is also buzz that Naagin 4 may be wrapped up and a new season will commence. Talking about this, the source said, “This, too, was a part of the discussion between the production house and the channel, and this was even conveyed to a few actors. However, as of now, they are likely to continue with the current season and different actors. Lead actor Vijayendra Kumeria might continue on the show, but even that depends on the new storyline.”
