‘Unfair to abuse or
troll my parents’

Rashami Desai recently posted a video online addressing the negativity that has plagued her life on social media. The actor, known for her roles in shows such as Uttaran, says the breaking point came when she witnessed her family being targeted in the filthy mess of the virtual world.

“To all the jobless people out there, I want to tell you all, please don’t pick on my mother and father. I know what I am doing; it’s my life,” the actor said in the video posted on X.

Reflecting on the incident, the 37-year-old tells us that trolling has become alarmingly normalized across the digital landscape, regardless of one’s profession, whether actor, businessperson or politician.

“In my case, everyone (on social media) comes and says something about my life, which leads to discomfort in the lives of people close to me. Recently, I saw a tweet where the user was abusing my mother, and that is what pushed me to put out the video. Everyone is telling me what to do and then talking bad about my family. I was hurt by what I read and thought I needed to put an end to it. It is unfair to drag my family and abuse or troll my parents,” shares the actor.

Desai firmly asserts that it was high time she stood up to the trolls who sought to dictate her life choices.

“I know what I am doing. I have been working hard for so long. I am a self-made woman, capable of making my own decisions. I appreciate their concern, but it was becoming insulting,” the actor says, adding, “In fact, every artiste knows how to navigate their social media... People need to stop being mean and so self-centred.”

That being said, the former Bigg Boss contestant admits that she understands the realities of life and is “open to criticism”. “We can’t stop trolling. People will always have something or another to say. They might hate you or love you. And there is no denying that I get a lot of love from everyone. I don’t expect trolling to not happen, but I expect there to be a limit on the same,” she says.
