The warmth Gulzar saab gave me stayed in my heart-Divya Dutta

Onkar Kulkarni (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 12, 2025)

Divya Dutta recently shared a stage with Gulzar at an event—an experience that reminded her just how fortunate she feels to have known him personally for so many years.

Reflecting on their bond, she says, “I have been very fortunate to have known Gulzar saab personally. I remember telling people who knew him that I just wanted to meet him once. But I’m glad the opportunity came knocking at my door when I was asked to have a conversation with him in Indore at an event. When we met, he said, main umeed karta hoon ki tum mere baare mein thoda jaanti ho. I told him I have seen all his films, listened to all his songs, read his books and absolutely adore him. Something clicked between us, and the warmth and affection he gave me stayed in my heart.”

Sharing one of her favourite memories, she adds, “I remember once I was climbing up an escalator and he was ahead of me. I was about to lose my balance and he held my hand saying, ‘Aaja beti, aaja.’ That moment cemented my relationship with Gulzar saab. Since then, I have been fortunate to speak with him on many platforms, to meet him personally at his home, to talk to him and really get to know him. His sense of humour is amazing, especially the way he jokes about things with such ease.”

Film on Meghalaya murder to be shot in Indore, Shillong

Film on Meghalaya murder to be shot in Indore, Shillong

Deep Saxena (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 31, 2025)

A film based on the murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi is in the making, months after the crime sent ripples through the country.

Filmmaker S P Nimbawat (known for helming Kabbadi, 2018) confirmed the project, adding that Raja’s family had given their consent. Speaking about the film, tentatively titled Honeymoon in Shillong, the filmmaker tells us, “Dil mein dard to sabhi ke tha; this is one of the biggest subjects in recent times, and if not me someone else would have made the film.”

Earlier, Raja’s brothers Sachin and Vipin told PTI, “We believe that if we do not bring the story of [our] brother’s murder on the big screen, people will not know who was right.” The brothers also want to “present the correct image of Meghalaya” through the film.

Meanwhile, Nimbawat says the film’s broader storyline is ready: “We are now bringing scriptwriters and hope to begin shooting later this year, after locking the script and cast. Eighty percent will be shot in Indore and the remaining in Shillong.”

Raja (28) had travelled to Meghalaya with his wife Sonam (24) shortly after their wedding in May. He was reported missing before his mutilated body was found on June 2 in a gorge near in the East Khasi Hills district. Eight people, including Sonam and her suspected lover, Raj Kushwaha have been arrested.

Palak Muchhal all set to sponsor her 3000th operation today

Music drives a bigger mission

Singer Palak Muchhal, who directs her concert fees towards heart surgeries of needy kids, set to sponsor her 3000th operation today
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; June 11, 2024)

For artistes, art could be a means to different things, from self-expression to fame. Palak Muchhal, however, has used her singing for a bigger cause. Through her initiative, Saving Little Hearts, the singer raises funds for underprivileged children battling heart ailments, by performing at concerts. Now, the singer is funding her initiative’s 3000th surgery—that of Alok Sahu, an eight-year-old from Indore.

Ahead of the surgery today, the singer recalled how it all started in 1999 when she teamed up with an Indore-based school and raised donations for a life-saving surgery of one of its students, Lokesh Kuril.

“Three thousand kids have found a new lease of life. I started it at the age of seven for a kid who was suffering from heart disease. Little did I know it would become the biggest mission of my life. I still have 413 kids on the list.”

The singer, known for hits like Udd jaa kaale kaava and Chahoon main ya naa, has a spate of concerts lined up, including in Delhi and Bengaluru. “Every concert I do, the whole remuneration goes towards the surgeries,” says Muchhal.

Her next step is to set up a hospital in Indore for the needy. “The [construction] is underway. It will be operational in a few years.” She adds that many hospitals support her endeavour by offering her discounts.

“Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in New Delhi gives me 33 per cent discount, while Manipal Heart Foundation gives me 51 per cent discount. I have tie-ups with Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, and some hospitals in Indore. Sri Aurobindo Hospital in Indore gives me Rs 10 lakh credit. When I don’t have funds and someone needs an urgent surgery, it can be done there.”

TV circuit will always be a beneficial market as it is vast in nature-Swanand Kirkire

Swanand Kirkire: Regardless of medium, motive is to entertain

Wearing actor and lyricist hats, Swanand Kirkire who is readying to feature alongside Shefali and Jaideep in a new film says that success today means catering to diverse audiences
Parth Srivastava (MID-DAY; June 12, 2023)

Lyricist Swanand Kirkire grew up in a musical family, with his parents always teaching him the importance of leading a good life. “But, I was more interested in theatre than music. Before I learnt about the National School of Drama, I would offer a helping hand to the local theatres in Indore,” says Kirkire, who subsequently arrived in Mumbai to write for a TV serial named Swaraj, and work as filmmaker Sudhir Mishra’s assistant.

It is perhaps this amalgamation of the craft he pursued and the one his family exposed him to, which enables Kirkire to don several hats at once. His upcoming slate of projects is only testimony to this fact. “I’m [acting] in a film with Jaideep Ahlawat and Shefali Shah. It is called Three Of Us. We still don’t know whether it will be released on OTT or in theatres. It was a pleasure to work with director Avinash Arun, who has received much love for his previous works like Pataal Lok, Drishyam and Masaan.”

Artistes across the industry have attempted to distinguish between the demands of cinematic projects and web offerings, but Kirkire believes such segregations are inessential. “I don’t think that the audience has been segregated. Earlier, there were two sources of entertainment  — TV and theatrical films. Now, with the addition of OTT, there are three. This platform has attracted many people, but the TV circuit will always be a beneficial market as it is vast in nature. Every platform is equally important to us. When it comes to revenue, cinema is a direct medium — a film is either a hit or a flop. But, on the web, it’s tough to decipher if a film is a hit or a flop. The generation of revenue is also not linear. So, for an artiste, the [medium via which] revenue is direct, is good. Gradually, people are trying to learn the tropes required to succeed in each platform. The main motive is to entertain, that’s it.”

Up next for him is a musical with Ankur Tewari. He lights up while discussing the project, stating, “Ankur and I had a terrific time working on that show. It will be released soon, and I’m sure people will love it. Apart from this, I will also release an album with different composers. I have created a band with two young musicians named Shrey Gupta and Harshit Mishra.”

There is an India beyond Khar, Santacruz, and Juhu that people don’t know about-Laxman Utekar

Laxman Utekar: There is an India beyond Khar, Santacruz, Juhu

Director Laxman, who brings a small-town story in Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, on how Vicky and Sara prepped for a month to understand milieu and characters’ mindset
Hiren Kotwani (MID-DAY; June 1, 2023)

There is something about small-town people and their aspirations that make for heartwarming stories, believes Laxman Utekar. Which is why his lens is often trained on them. For his third Hindi directorial venture, Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (ZHZB), Utekar takes his audience to the colourful alleys of Indore.

“Our country is so vast, with so many small towns and villages. They have numerous stories of their own. I want to explore that with every film. Luka Chuppi [2019] was set in Gwalior, Mimi [2021] in Mandawa, and Zara Hatke Zara Bachke is set in Indore. A chunk of the population lives in such places. We should make movies for the wider audience,” he reasons.

What makes the Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan-starrer fit for a larger audience is its universal theme — it traces a middle-class couple’s struggle to buy a home of their own. Utekar says that “everyone across the country”, whether city-bred or hailing from small towns, harbours this dream. “In India, everyone wants to have their own home. It’s not easy buying or even selling a house.”

With this insight, Utekar set out to make ZHZB with Kaushal and Khan, who were his first choice for the roles. In fact, the lead character of Kapil was written with Kaushal in mind.

“While we needed star value, we also wanted someone who looks smart, and is believable as a middle-class guy. Vicky has a grasp of the ground reality, and can portray the middle class realistically. When I met Sara, I realised she is exactly like Soumya [her character].”

Slipping into the roles did not come easy. The two actors did month-long workshops to understand their characters’ mindset, and the milieu the story is set in. “There is an India beyond Khar, Santacruz, and Juhu that people don’t know about. In small towns, people save daily for the next day. They won’t buy anything without bargaining hard; their choice of clothes, lifestyle, and mode of transport are all a reflection of their middle-class nature. Vicky and Sara had to absorb these traits. Vicky had to learn the Indori dialect. So, eight days before we started shooting, Sara and he reached Indore. They interacted with the locals, [studied] how they dress, their manner of speaking, and behaviour.”

I am scared to become a parent now, but Parag Tyagi is ready-Shefali Jariwala

Shefali Jariwala birthday special: There’s just one Kanta Laga girl in the whole world

Hasti Doshi (BOMBAY TIMES; March 1, 2023)

Shefali Jariwala began 2023 on a difficult note. She was to perform at an event in Indore when she had a fall and severely injured her hand and had to get 25 stitches. It took her a while to heal completely.

She says, “I was injured a day before the event and was advised to not perform because of the stitches. But it was a New Year’s event and I felt professionally, it wouldn’t be right to opt out at the last minute. So, I went ahead with my performance, but my hand started bleeding on stage and I was in pain. I guess that’s the reason it took a long time for the injury to heal, but I am fine now.”

On the personal front, Shefali has been married to actor Parag Tyagi for seven years. The two had spoken about their plans to adopt a child in the past. However, it was delayed owing to the pandemic. Shefali says, “I feel everything has its own time and things that are supposed to happen will happen.”

Sharing the reason, Shefali says, “Everything changed during the lockdown. The intention is still there, but I am scared. The two years of the pandemic made me feel very uncertain of the future, I have lost too many close ones in this period, which has made me realize that life is fragile. I am scared to become a parent now, but Parag is ready. I believe you should bring home your baby only when you are ready and confident; not just financially stable, but also mentally stable. I have just taken a step back and will wait until I feel confident to take that step in life.”

As for work, Shefali, who is best known as the Kaanta Laga girl and for her stint in Bigg Boss 13, is now focusing on OTT. “I have already shot for three web shows. As an artiste, I want to explore more, no matter what the medium is. Finally, people are seeing me beyond the glamour and I am being offered roles with substance.”

Our wedding celebration was a reflection of our personalities, say Palak Muchhal and Mithoon

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; November 7, 2022)

Back in 2013, singer Palak Muchhal and composer Mithoon collaborated for the music of Aashiqui 2, which went on to become a massive success. Little did they know that nearly a decade later, their professional relationship would culminate into a personal one. With an elaborate three-day celebration in Mumbai that comprised of haldi, mehendi, sangeet, shaadi and reception, Palak and Mithoon formalised their relationship yesterday in the presence of their family members and friends.

While the two have known and worked with each other, it wasn’t cupid, but their parents who brought them together. Mithoon, who has composed music for films like Half Girlfriend, Kabir Singh and Radhe Shyam, among others, says, “Even though we have known and collaborated with each other on multiple occasions, there was never any kind of social connect between us. It was only in the last one year that I felt a strong connection.”

Mithoon says, “So, I spoke to my parents about it a few months ago, and soon they spoke to her parents. Then they had a formal meeting, after which we started interacting more to understand each other.”

Palak shares, “When the rishta came, my parents were very happy. Personally, I have always admired and respected him. All these years that we have known each other, we only met for professional reasons and always focused on our work. So, this thought (of spending our life together) never occurred to us, but now it feels like it was meant to be.”

Palak and Mithoon, who tied the knot yesterday, say that they complement and complete each other. Palak says, “I can say that he adds peace to my excitement.” While Mithoon adds, “She has added so much to my perspective of life. She helped me discover various facets of my personality that I was not aware of. I met myself once again through Palak (smiles).”

Talking about keeping their wedding a simple and close-knit family affair, Palak says, “Our wedding celebration was a reflection of our personalities. The idea was to celebrate everything with people who mattered to us a lot.”

Mithoon added, “The wedding ceremony was an emotional affair, and the reception party was a celebration of our Indian traditions. We both are very proud of our culture, and right from the décor and clothing, to the food, we tried our best to celebrate our heritage. Though we kept the celebrations low-key, I learnt that in Indore (Palak’s hometown), there were people who joined in the bandwagon by bursting crackers on the streets. They (fans) were really excited about this development in Palak’s life. Yeh jo apnapan hain na, agar aap ne gairon ko bhi apna hone ka ehsaas de diya, toh phir aapse bada insaan koi ho hi nahi sakta. She inspires people, and I am also inspired by her.”

Mithoon says that he feels blessed to receive so much love and warmth from Palak’s mother. He adds, “I have developed a beautiful relationship with her family. Palak’s mom has been very protective of her. She has always been by Palak’s side. The day she gave Palak’s hand to me, I felt blessed. She showed trust in me, and now I hope that I live up to that responsibility.”

Though Palak and Mithoon are busy with work commitments and are yet to plan their honeymoon, they will take a much-needed break soon. “I feel we have always been clear about our priorities. For us, family time is very important. We have been able to take our time out for things that matter to us. Striking a balance between work and personal life comes naturally to us,” signs off Palak.

vaishali takkar

THE TIMES OF INDIA (October 17, 2022)

Indore: Television actress Vaishali Takkar died by suicide in Indore on Sunday. The 30-year-old, who debuted in ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’, hanged herself at home and left behind a note alleging that she was being harassed by a former boyfriend, police said.

Late on Sunday evening, Tejaji Nagar police station in-charge R D Kanwa said, “We have recovered a five-page note, written in a small diary, from her room. We are verifying its content. She has named a former boyfriend and said that he was troubling her. She said he wasn’t marrying her, nor was he letting her marry anyone else. The former boyfriend is married with two kids.”

One of her recent social media posts is being seen as an ominous indication of her suicide. A week ago, Takkar had posted a reel on her social media account, showing a whirling ceiling fan, with the comment: ‘What do you do on Sundays?’

It was Takkar’s brother who found her hanging in her room on Saturday night. They took her to a hospital but she was declared dead on arrival by doctors. Police sent her body for post mortem examination at MY Hospital. She was cremated by her family on Sunday afternoon.

“An iPhone, iPad and other items have been seized from her house. The note has been sent for examination by handwriting experts,” said Kanwa, adding that no case has been registered against the former boyfriend yet. “We have called him for questioning after which further action will be taken,” said Kanwa.

Takkar had worked in many popular television shows, but her suicide note suggests she wastired of the TV industry and wanted to settle and have a family, said a police officer on condition of anonymity. The actress was engaged to a Kenya-based furniture businessman in 2021, but it was called off a month later. Takkar had updated details of her engagement on social media but later posted that she had broken up with him and deleted the engagement pictures from her account.

Kamya Panjabi forgets envelope with Rs. 1 lakh at a pani puri stall in Indore

Farzana Patowari (BOMBAY TIMES; May 31, 2022)

If you lose something at a busy place, you rarely get it back. And if it’s something precious, then the chances of getting it back are even lesser. But you can get lucky sometimes and Kamya Panjabi will vouch for that. The actress was in Indore recently, where she lost Rs. 1 lakh at a pani puri stall, but was lucky enough to find it.

Kamya tells us, “I was in Indore recently for an event. On my way back, my friend Santosh Gupta told me that there was a place where a guy sells amazing pani puri. Indore is famous for its chaat, so I decided to try it out. I had an envelope with me which had one lakh cash in it. So, I kept it aside on a table in the shop while I was eating. I got so engrossed while eating and taking pictures that I left the envelope there,” she says.

Later when she reached the hotel, Kamya realised that she didn’t have the envelope and immediately remembered that it was at the pani puri shop. “My friend rushed to the place. I was stressed and kept hoping that I would get it back. When he reached there, he found my packet at the same spot where I had left it. My friend spoke to the pani puri stall owner Dinesh Gujjer and got it back. Understandably, I was thrilled because I was sure that we wouldn’t find it there. When something like this happens, it is so amazing and surprising. I think the people of Indore are really nice and kind,” says Kamya, who was last seen in ShaktiAstitva Ke Ehsaas Ki.

Images: Post marriage, Vicky Kaushal gets back to work; shoots his next with Sara Ali Khan in Indore

Saptaparna Biswas (BOMBAY TIMES; January 12, 2022)

Actors Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan have been shooting in Indore for director Laxman Utekar’s next venture for some time now. In the last week of December 2021, the lead actors were spotted shooting on a motorcycle around the bylanes of a market area, and Sara and Vicky’s looks from the film quickly became the talk of the town.

On Sunday, the actors were spotted shooting a scene in the heart of Indore, Kunwar Mandli — Rajwada. Sara was spotted wearing a yellow and deep blue salwar kurta, while Vicky sported a casual T-shirt and trouser look. Some scenes were also shot in the old market area of Khajuri Bazar. The duo shot for five to six hours, starting from afternoon, till late evening for a night scene, during which Sara changed into a saree.

While no official statement has been made by the director about the title, reports and sources suggest it is Luka Chuppi 2 that the actors are shooting for. The previous film featured Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon in lead roles, and was also shot in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior.

On Saturday, Katrina Kaif, too, was spotted in Indore where she joined Vicky to celebrate one month of their wedding on Sunday. According to sources, Katrina has been staying indoors at a hotel, while Vicky is at work.

Ever since I was a child, I’ve really enjoyed criticism-Sara Ali Khan

The actor believes that the lessons learnt from failures are more valuable than the joy of successes
Monika Rawal Kukreja (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 11, 2022)

Actor Sara Ali Khan is basking in the success of her latest release, Atrangi Re, and she admits she didn’t think an OTT release could get as much love as a theatrical outing.

“It’s divine justice that the only good thing that happened [for me] in 2020 was Atrangi Re, and 2021 ended with Atrangi’s release, and I’m starting 2022 by talking to you about it,” she smiles, adding, “I’ve realised that agar janta ka pyaar milna hota hai, toh woh kahin bhi mil jaata hai.”

Given the country’s current situation, would she be okay with her future films taking the OTT route? “If you had asked me this question 10 days ago, I would have said that I really missed the theatres. I still do. However, we make films for people to watch, enjoy and appreciate. If I can do that, the medium doesn’t matter as much,” says the 26-year-old.

Despite all of the praise, some people didn’t like her film or thought her performance was over-the-top. Talking about how she takes criticism in her stride, Khan says, “Ever since I was a child, I’ve really enjoyed criticism. I enjoy appreciation also. But I realised early in my life that more than the happiness that successes give you, the learning that failures give you teaches you far more in life.”

The actor, whose film Love Aaj Kal (2019) didn’t perform well at the box office, agrees that “times are changing,” and that nowadays it’s “less about being a heroine and more about performers”. Khan adds, “If someone says, ‘Oh, you were too loud here’, it’s my job to make sure that the next time I have to take a loud pitch, I’m convinced and can convince you about it. So, I don’t take criticism badly at all. I read reviews, I reflect on them, and I try to make sure that people can appreciate my work in the future if they haven’t already.”

Even when it comes to social media, despite being “herself”, Khan has been subjected to trolling. But she asserts she knows how not to let it affect her: “If I’m being trolled for my work, it affects me, because I’m making films for the audiences. So if they’re not liking it, it’s a problem. But, if I’m being trolled for being who I am, then I don’t really care. My mental peace doesn’t depend on what people say. There’s a difference between appreciation and validation, and I think I know it.”

While the rise in Coronavirus cases has again put things on the back-burner, Khan is grateful that she’s on a film set. She is shooting in Indore for Laxman Utekar’s next with actor Vicky Kaushal. “Safety is paramount. I hope that things get controlled and go back to the way we want,” she ends.

Multi-city promotional leg of Shefali Shah’s upcoming series Human cancelled amid rising cases

The pandemic-pause

Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; January 7, 2022)

The year begins with a pause. Owing to the spike in the number of positive Coronavirus and Omicron cases, many ongoing promotional activities of films and series have been cancelled. The makers — Vipul Amrutlal Shah and Mozez Singh — of the Shefali Shah-starrer Human had planned multi-city tours but have now changed their minds.

Plans for the Disney+ Hotstar series involved holding public events in Ahemdabad, Bhopal, Indore, Lucknow, Delhi, Kanpur, and Banaras. A source reveals, “Since the project is close to Shefali’s heart, she wanted to go all out for promotions. The cast of the show has now dropped all their city visits and on-ground promotions.”

The trailer, released on December 28, received “fabulous responses by the audience, fraternity, and critics alike”. “The show will remain close to my heart since it has given me the opportunity to play a character with interesting shades — complicated, unpredictable, and indecipherable. It’s unfortunate, but to ensure everyone’s safety we had to cancel [city-tours],” added Shah.

The thriller, starring Shah and Kirti Kulhari, explores the dark and twisted world of human drug trials. The series is set to release on January 14.

Oxygen plant is Palak Muchhal’s priority at her new hospital

Juhi Chakraborty (HINDUSTAN TIMES; May 11, 2021)

Singer Palak Muchhal recently revealed that she’s building a hospital in her home town, Indore, which would provide free of cost treatment to those who can’t afford medical care.

“I have always dreamt of opening a hospital, ever since I was a child. I want to create a place where people, who can’t afford surgeries or medical treatment, can get themselves treated without having to ask someone else for help,” says Muchhal.

Right now, the 29-year-old is chalking down a basic plan. “It’s in its primary stage and we’re discussing the plan and construction. It will take time, but I’m glad that I’m so close to fulfilling my dream,” she adds.

The announcement of her new hospital comes at a time when the country’s medical and health sector has come under major scrutiny amid the second wave of the Coronavirus, which has seen a massive shortage of oxygen at hospitals and in supply. Muchhal says she is taking note and will make sure that those gaps are filled at her hospital. “It’s shameful that we don’t have a basic thing like oxygen in our hospitals. This has allowed me to gather knowledge about how to be prepared for a crisis. We’ve realised that oxygen plants at hospitals are important, and we’re going to implement that,” she explains, adding that she is consulting with a team of experts including doctors and advisors for the project.

Meanwhile, the Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) singer, who lives in Mumbai, is trying to help people in need. “Usually, I don’t take calls from unknown numbers, but now, I’m taking all calls and replying to all texts. People call and say, ‘Didi mere mummy papa ko bacha lo’. I have also experienced disappointment when despite arranging for a bed, the patient could not be saved. I wish I could have done something sooner,” she ends.

Akshay Kumar has paved the way for everyone as he safely shot a film in pandemic-Divya Dutta

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 3, 2021)

Everyone had their own takeaway from the year gone by. It taught many a number of lessons and made them introspect, while others felt gratitude in their lives. Divya Dutta, who had seven releases in 2020, shares that it feels strange to say that she had a good year. “We were and still are in unreal times. Suddenly from following deadlines and running around in suitcases, we were at home. But what warms my heart is the world came together in a beautiful way. Today, I make it a point to meet my neighbours and celebrate occasions with them as they have become family. The power of simplicity and bonding has been amazing. We all lived on hope. I became a different self last year.”

On the work front, she received two awards and had seven releases, including four shorts, two web shows and a film. “It wasn’t bad. I enjoyed playing different roles in each of them and even shot for a few last year while maintaining safety protocols. The film Ram Singh Charlie (2020) was so special and I am glad that the audiences gave it their love. The filmmaking process was so pure,” says the actor, who is delighted to see people come together in the industry.

“Everyone was waiting for things to open up, so that the shoots could start. People started working gradually. Many shoots will start this month and that is a good sign. When you are together, problems seem small. Akshay Kumar has paved the way for everyone as he shot a film and returned with the whole unit safely as well. It shows that if you are careful then work won’t stop. The first half of 2021 is all booked for me. I have two big feature films and two web series lined up. It is lovely to be back on the sets. I will be shooting in Jaipur, Punjab and Indore,” she divulges, adding that she has finally finished writing her second book, which should be out this year, too.

Poet Rahat Indori, who tested Covid positive, passes away at 70

Avijit Ghosh & Jamal Ayub | TNN (THE TIMES OF INDIA; August 12, 2020)

New Delhi/Indore: He wrote stirring couplets that even politicians quoted in Parliament. And his poems of ardour and abandon made him a major crowd puller. Rahat Indori, one of the most-quoted Urdu poets of his generation, who also frequently collaborated with producer-director Vidhu Vinod Chopra, passed away following a string of heart attacks in Indore on Tuesday. He was 70.

“After the first attack, he seemed to be stabilising. But two more attacks followed,” Dr Vinod Bhandari, director, Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences told TOI. A social media regular with over 860k followers on Twitter, the poet had tweeted on Tuesday that he was Coronavirus positive. In his last tweet, he requested people not to call him, saying he would update his status. He was also a diabetic and had cardiac issues. His death was widely mourned.

Indori’s association with Hindi cinema was fruitful but not memorable. He wrote lyrics in over 20 films and worked with Vidhu Vinod Chopra for Kareeb (1998), Mission Kashmir (2000) and Munnabhai MBBS (2003). Bumbro bumbro was one of his biggest hits.

The son of a textile mill employee, Indori was a PhD in Urdu literature. He taught at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya for many years. He was married to fellow poet Anjum Rehbar. “He was a poet of mushairas, whose work was much loved by audience but he never lowered his standard please them,” says poet Hasan Kamal.

TV actress Preksha Mehta commits suicide; lack of work being cited as cause by police

Rajeev Bhadoriya, inspector from Heera Nagar police station in Indore, shares that the actress penned a suicide note about how her shattered dreams had broken her confidence, forcing her to take this extreme step
Saptaparna Biswas (BOMBAY TIMES; May 27, 2020)

Days after the news of TV actor Manmeet Grewal’s suicide due to financial crisis, the Hindi television industry has suffered yet another shock with the suicide of actress Preksha Mehta.

Preksha, who did small roles in shows like Crime Patrol, Laal Ishq and Meri Durga, committed suicide late on Monday night at her residence in Indore. According to family members, with whom she was staying currently, she was upset about not finding work during the Coronavirus lockdown. Speaking to us, Preksha’s cousin, who stays near her house in Indore, said, “She was a vibrant girl since childhood, but lately, she had become quiet. On Monday night, the family was playing cards, but Preksha was sitting alone on the steps of the house. My chachi (Preksha’s mother) even asked her if she was okay, but she said she was fine. Around 10 pm, Preksha went to her room upstairs and posted the message on her Instagram. The next morning, when chachi went to wake her up for yoga, she found her room locked and called others to help open the door. Once inside, they found Preksha hanging from the ceiling fan.”

Reportedly, Preksha was the first one from her family to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. “She worked hard and realised her dreams all by herself. So, her self-expectations were really high,” added her cousin.

Rajeev Bhadoriya, inspector from Heera Nagar police station in Indore, shares, “A one-page suicide note was found in Preksha’s room, wherein she wrote about how she tried hard to stay positive through these times, but couldn’t. The note said, ‘Mere toote huye sapno ne mere confidence ka dam tod diya hai, main mare huye sapnon ke saath nahi jee sakti. Iss negativity ke saath rehna mushkil hai. Pichle ek saal se maine bohot koshish ki. Ab mein thak gayi hoon’. She had been very depressed about not getting work.”

Salman Khan won’t be able to attend nephew’s funeral due to lockdown

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; April 1, 2020)

Early yesterday, Salman Khan dedicated a post to his nephew, Abdullah Khan, on social media. The message, which read, “Will always love you…” was in loving memory of the 38-year-old, who had died in Mumbai on Monday.

Talking about Abdullah’s demise, Salman’s manager Jordy Patel told BT, “He died of heart failure following severe lung infection.” While there were rumours that Abdullah had died of Coronavirus, Jordy clarified that Abdullah had “tested negative” for it.

Like Salman, Abdullah, too, was a fitness enthusiast and was extremely close to the Bharat actor and his family. According to reports, Abdullah, who ran a business in Mumbai, was admitted to a private hospital in Andheri a couple of days ago, after he complained about feeling uneasy. On Salman's suggestion, they later shifted him to a hospital near the former’s Bandra home.

The actor is extremely upset that he won’t be able to attend Abdullah’s funeral. “Salman is at his farmhouse in Panvel and because of the nationwide lockdown, he won’t be able to travel. The funeral will be held in Indore, which is Abdullah’s hometown. Salman will visit the family later,” informed Jordy.

Meanwhile, Salim Khan told BT, “Abdullah mere nephew ka beta tha. I am glad that in the times of a lockdown also, all the paperwork went smoothly. Abdullah was staying in Mumbai, and was very close to all of us.”

Saptaparna Biswas (BOMBAY TIMES; March 13, 2020)

With over a lakh Covid-19 cases across the world and the World Health Organization (WHO) recently declaring the Coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, many events are being cancelled across the world. Speaking to us, KK said, “I don’t want to be the reason for any kind of mass gathering in any city. The situation is serious, and we are already running out of masks and sanitisers. I would not want to add any more problems to the situation.”

The singer was in Indore for a college event. When asked why he chose to perform there, he said, “It was a college event and I know how hard the kids had worked to make it successful. So, I agreed to come. Otherwise, I have cancelled and postponed every live concert of mine till the end of March. And I might continue the same till April if the situation persists. I want to avoid travelling and want to ensure that others don’t travel to attend shows either.”

Failing the NSD exam was an eye opener for me-Swanand Kirkire

When Swanand Kirkire finally got admission in the National School of Drama, he was overwhelmed with the fact that he was going to study in an institute that produced legends
Navneet Vyasan (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 23, 2020)

Born to a family of classical singers, lyricist Swanand Kirkire has tried his hands at almost everything. From writing dialogues to acting and playback singing, his long list of accolades stands testimony to the talent he possesses. “Both my father and mother were classical musicians, but they were not professionals. Back then, it was not easy to become a professional musician. But it was a passion for them,” he says, adding, “But my uncle used to do theatre, and I used to go with him for rehearsals. That’s when I realised that I really liked theatre.”

And this fascination for the stage, in fact, encouraged the National Award winner to apply for the National School of Drama (NSD). “It was a game-changer, and a little difficult for me,” he adds.

Kirkire adds that he got in at his second attempt. “I failed the first exam and it was an eye-opener for me. I was overwhelmed with the fact that I was appearing for an examination for an institute which has produced legends such as Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri and Shabana Azmi,” he says.

“But after I got in, I was exposed to the world. Coming from Indore (Madhya Pradesh) to Delhi, which is the cultural centre, I got exposed to a lot of things. Delhi has all the embassies, where you get to see films of different languages, theatre in different languages, etc. Then I started working for a group called Act One. This group’s alumni include Manoj Bajpayee, Shoojit Sircar and Piyush Mishra and that was really inspiring,” he adds.

Till date, Kirkire has won two national awards, first being in 2006 for the song Bande Me Tha Dum, from Lage Raho Munna Bhai, and second being for Behti Hawa Sa Tha Who from 3 Idiots (2009).
