Sagar Sarhadi always wrote in Urdu, like Gulzar saab-Javed Siddiqui

Playwright Javed Siddiqui remembers famed writer-director Sagar Sarhadi, who was the mind behind gems Bazaar, Kabhi Kabhie and Noorie
As told to Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; March 23, 2021)
My friendship with Sagar Sarhadi dates back to the early 1960s. Being screenwriters, dialogue writers and playwrights, we were both trying to make a mark then. We had a shared love for Urdu literature. He was one of the finest Urdu playwrights in the country. There was another [thread] that tied us together — we were both [part of] the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA).
In 2008, he was awarded the prestigious Ghalib Award for drama. His numerous plays, including Tanhai and Bhagat Singh Di Wapsi are considered IPTA classics. [In our heydays], we used to meet often at Janki Kutir in Juhu, where several struggling writers would hang out. Kaifi saab and Shaukat [Azmi] aapa were our mentors. [Sarhadi’s] nephew Ramesh Talwar, Bharat Kapoor, Mac Mohan, Shama Zaidi, and I would spend hours, talking literature and poetry.
I last met him before the lockdown. I could sense he was feeling lonely, and slipping into depression. He was a bachelor and lived alone in Sion. He loved to write, but his weak eyesight, due to advancing age, proved to be a deterrent. I will always remember him as someone who was full of life and ready with one-liners.
Like Gulzar saab, he wrote in Urdu, not Hindi. He wrote screenplay and dialogues for films like Kabhi Kabhie [1976], Noorie [1979] and Silsila [1981], but he is best remembered for his directorial venture, Bazaar [1982]. The film highlighted the bride-buying practice in Hyderabad. Every track of the film was a gem, including Karoge yaad toh har baat yaad aayegi. Now, it’s only his memories that remain with us.
Writer-director Sagar Sarhadi passes away at age 87

Avijit Ghosh (THE TIMES OF INDIA; March 23, 2021)
Sagar Sarhadi, who wrote Yash Chopra’s sumptuous ode to romance, ‘Kabhi Kabhie’, and also directed ‘Bazaar’, a heart-breaking document on the ugly linkage between poverty, marriage and market, passed away at his residence in Mumbai on Sunday night. He was 87. “He wasn’t keeping well for some time and had even stopped eating,” his nephew, filmmaker Ramesh Talwar (‘Doosara Aadmi’, ‘Baseraa’), told PTI.
The writer formed an enduring association with Chopra, authoring the screenplay of the much talked-about flop (‘Silsila’) and penning blockbusters such as ‘Noorie’ and ‘Chandni’ (dialogue). The relationship was formed after Chopra saw ‘Mirza Sahiban’, a Sarhadi play on the Indo-Pak war. He was invited to watch it by Talwar, then an assistant to Chopra. ‘Kabhi Kabhie’ followed. ‘Tanhaii’, ‘Bhagat Singh Di Wapsi’ and ‘Bhookha Bhajan Na Hoye Gopala’ are some of his acclaimed works as a playwright.
Originally named Ganga Sagar Talwar, Sarhadi was born in Baffa, in undivided India. He took on the surname Sarhadi, from director Zia Sarhadi who had impressed him with his progressive social films (‘Footpath’, ‘Hum Log’), and because he himself came from the frontiers. Uprooted by Partition, his family came to Delhi via Srinagar. As refugees, they lived in tents before finding a home in the capital’s Mori Gate area. “There is anger in me. I want to know about those in power who make you leave your own village and make refugees out of people,” he said in the same interview. Later he moved to Bombay, graduated in English from St Xavier’s and worked as an Urdu translator in a British firm. He quit to become a professional writer.
Sarhadi had strong Left leanings, loved reading Karl Marx and was associated with the Progressive Writers Association. ‘Bazaar’ (1982), which he wrote and directed, was markedly different from the romances that had earned him fame and fortune. “I was becoming repetitive and mechanical. What else can you do in a fantasy factory?...I made a film I believed in,” he told TOI back in 1986. The film was a critical and commercial success. Pirated video cassettes even found their way to Pakistan. Sarhadi also directed ‘Tere Shaher Mein’ which linked justice to privilege, ‘Agla Mausam,’ which showed how feudalism lurks, and, more recently, ‘Chausar’ (2018). These movies were either not released or sparsely viewed.
Among those who paid tribute to him on social media were writer Javed Akhtar, lyricist Manoj Muntashir, director Anubhav Sinha and actor Hrithik Roshan. Sarhadi wrote the dialogues of ‘Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai’, Roshan’s debut film, and of ‘Deewana’, Shah Rukh Khan’s first box-office smash.
Actor Shabana Azmi tweeted, “He will be remembered by his work both in theatre n films notable amongst them #Tanhaii n #Bazaar. He drew his inspiration from life, travelled by bus n train bcoz he was a writer of d masses. We at IPTA have lost a family member.”

Nikkhil Advani’s Bazaar is all set to go on floors. A thriller set against the backdrop of the stock market, the script, after a few alterations is ready. Saif Ali Khan will play the lead in the film, which will also mark the debut of Vinod Mehra’s son Rohan.
Says a source from the team, “The casting is done. Saif plays the older hero while Rohan plays the younger parallel lead. Arjun Kapoor was approached for it, but he didn’t have the dates they wanted to shoot for.”
And now, they have approached two prominent leading ladies opposite Saif and Rohan. Adds our khabri, “Nimrat Kaur has been offered the main leading lady’s part opposite Saif where she will play his love interest. There will be another young, fresh romantic angle with Rohan Mehra’s character. For that, Nikkhil has cast Dangal girl Fatima Sana Shaikh. Nikkhil has loved her in Dangal and feels she will be brilliant in this thriller too.” Interesting.

Saif Ali Khan invested close to a year-and-a-half on Rangoon. Now that the film has released and is largely off the screens, Saif has moved on. He is looking forward to his next three films already, two of which are set to arrive in a matter of few months from now.
“He has a couple of films — Kalakaandi and Chef — in different stages of production. Then he is gearing up to begin work on Nikkhil Advani’s Baazaar,” informs our source.
When contacted, Saif was quite candid about the choices that he is making as an actor.
“I didn’t have a particularly great time at the movies a year before. That said, in the interim period, some very interesting directors called me with their scripts and said that I was their first choice. That’s always good to hear, when it is genuine. I want to work hard, and then prove to them I am not just a credible actor but also a very interesting one,” says Saif. One such film is Kalakaandi, which is directed by Akshat Verma (who wrote Delhi Belly).
Next to arrive would be Chef. “I am shooting for it right now. We have been doing some really interesting work on it. The film is giving me a lot of joy,” says Saif about the film, which sees director Raja Menon return after one of the most acclaimed films of 2016, Airlift. Meanwhile, Saif is also slated to do Baazaar. “It is a stock market thriller and one of its kinds. The film is truly exciting for me,” Saif talks about the film, which will go on floors a few months from now.
Kalakaandi releases on May 26, Chef arrives on July 14. Count the February release of Rangoon and that makes it three films in as few as four months for Saif.
After working with Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor might team up with Saif Ali Khan for Bazaar?

Says an insider, “Bazaar is a two-hero film. It’s about a mentor and his protégé and the share market forms the backdrop to the story.”
Nikkhil has approached Saif Ali Khan and Arjun Kapoor for the roles. “Nikkhil is finalising things with both Saif and Arjun and they are quite aware of the pairing. If all works out well, it will be Saif mentoring Arjun in the film. Although, Arjun’s role will be slightly bigger than Saif’s, the mentor’s part will be more integral to the plot. It’s a 50-50 situation and neither of the actors have cause to complain about Saif’s screen time.” After teaming up with begum Kareena for Ki and Ka, it’s time for Arjun to work with his Ki’s real life Ka.
Arjun Kapoor contemplating working in Anushka Sharma’s home production?

Arjun Kapoor is spoilt for choice post Ki & Ka. The actor has been offered four biggies and they are all good roles.
Currently, he has only said yes to Anees Bazmee’s Mubarakan, which also stars his uncle Anil Kapoor. Says a source, “For Arjun today, it’s about picking and choosing the next film after Half-Girlfriend with Shraddha Kapoor. He has been offered some interesting films. He wants to do different roles, so he is being very choosy and selective."
The source adds that Arjun has been hearing scripts but he is in no hurry to sign whatever comes his way. He wants to time out his films, and he also has to keep time for his TV reality show. “He’s shooting for Half-Girlfriend in Delhi presently. He hasn’t had any time for himself between prepping for H-G and shooting for it. His naani Sattee Shourie passed away last week, so, emotionally, too, it has been an exhausting time for him. Now, he has to choose carefully between the films he has been offered (see box) and give his dates.”
ARJUN’s OFFERS
There’s Anushka Sharma’s next home production, a thriller. He is in talks with Navdeep and her NH10 team.
There’s an emotional attachment to Nikkhil Advani’s Bazaar, featuring Saif Ali Khan. Arjun was an assistant director to Nikhil on Kal Ho Na Ho and Salaam-E-Ishq. Bazaar is about the share market like Wall Street where Saif plays the billionaire tycoon and Arjun works under him as his apprentice.
The third film is Abhishek Varman’s Shiddat produced by Karan Johar. This, too, has an emotional connect as Arjun is close to Abhishek (they also worked together in 2 States).
Nikkhil Advani to cast a younger hero along with Sanjay Dutt or Saif Ali Khan in Bazaar?

Nikkhil Advani’s Bazaar has been in the offing for over
a year now. First, Hrithik Roshan was supposed to star in his
ambitious project, but he copped out. Nikkhil then bounced the idea off
to Akshay Kumar. But the deal with that fell through because he asked
for a heavy remuneration.
Nikkhil hasn’t given up. Bazaar will indeed be the film he directs next. He has his sights set on Sanjay Dutt or Saif Ali Khan for the central character. But there is a twist in the take. Bazaar is no longer a solo-hero film.
Ek se bhale do!
A source confirms, “Bazaar will have two central characters and Nikkhil wants a newcomer actor alongside an established star. He is also in talks with some of the Gen-Y actors and hopes to get a nod from someone in a month’s time.”
But there’s one issue, the source adds. “The role for the actor is not a parallel lead. The film will mostly revolve around the lead actor’s character. So it isn’t likely that any of the top gen new heroes will take up a role like this. He will have to look at the second rung.”
Nikhil Advani to cast either Saif Ali Khan or Sanjay Dutt in Bazaar?

Nikkhil Advani is a man on a mission. His Hero and
Katti Batti released back-to-back last year and he was already in talks
with Hrithik Roshan for his next, Bazaar. Hrithik opted out soon after
and as we told you, the script landed in Akshay Kumar’s hands, albeit
after several alterations.
Lead badal gaya
Now, a source tells us, “Akshay liked the script, but there were money issues. So he decided not to do the film. Also, now he has a full platter of films to attend to. However, Nikhil is now planning to approach Saif Ali Khan or Sanjay Dutt for the role.”
Yeh bhi, woh bhi
The filmmaker feels both of them will suit the role. “Nikhil has worked with Saif in the past and they share a good equation. He wanted to make Katti Batti with him, but things didn’t materialise. Bazaar revolves around the unpredictability of the share market and how it affects the lives of everyone involved. Now, Saif has asked Nikhil to give him a narration first and then he will decide,” the source tells us.
Value addition
What about Sanjay? The source added, “Sanjay is out of jail now and has a lot of directors queuing up for him. Nikhil wants him to do this film because he feels Sanjay’s presence will add to the film.”
This is indeed Nikhil’s next directorial venture. The other thriller he was planning with Kangana Ranaut based on serial killers is on the back-burner now.
So who will it be? Saif or Sanjay?
Akshay Kumar to replace Hrithik Roshan in Nikhil Advani's Bazaar?

Nikhil Advani is going through a rough patch. After
both Hero and Katti Batti were not received well by the audiences, now
we hear that Hrithik Roshan has walked out of his ambitious project,
Bazaar. And that Akshay Kumar who has done three films with him in the
past, might step in.
“Nikhil, who is producing Akshay’s next release, bonded with him while shooting again after a long time. So after Hrithik walked out of Bazaar, Nikhil approached Akshay, who is known to work with directors irrespective whether their last film has worked or not. Plus, the director wanted an A-lister for the film and Akshay and Ajay seemed to be the only choices. And he chose to go ahead with Akshay because of the comfort factor.”
Nikhil has spoken to Akki about Bazaar and he has liked the script. Now the modalities need to be worked out,” concludes our source.
IN THE PAST...
While Nikhil gave an interview claiming that Duggu was never finalised for the film, while promoting his last two films, Nikhil admitted, on record, that Hrithik and he would be teaming up for Bazaar — a film that revolved around the share market. Soon, Hrithik copped out after Hero and Katti Batti failed to become money-churners. Our source tells us, “Hrithik lost faith in Nikhil’s abilities and thought that it would be risky to team up with him for this film hence decided to opt out.
My phone calls are still being answered; so I think I'm still relevant-Nikhil Advani

Nikhil Advani, admits that he erred with his last two films but is still in the race, producing three films and directing two more
Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 28, 2015)
Slated for the Republic Day weekend, the Akshay
Kumar-starrer has just come out with a two-minute-eight-second showcase
to enlighten viewers that it is not on the Kandahar hijacking nor an
espionage thriller like Baby but a true story of 1,70,000 Indians
evacuated from Kuwait in 1990. “The response is so overwhelming
that even Raja (director Raja Menon), who has been filming in stealth
the last year, is taken aback. Some wonder if this really happened,
others endorse it did with them, their dads and uncles and we're
wondering how to sustain the expectations. But one thing's for sure, I'm
never going to spin a story again,“ asserts Nikhil. “I was honest with
D-Day and the animation film, Delhi Safari, was probably my most
honest film. There was nothing to manipulate, it was about four animals
teaching humans humanity.“
Quiz him on where he fell short with the Hero remake and he reveals that he had wanted to make it like a dark Satya with the boy in a chawl. But then he realised they were launching two debutants, Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty, and needed to make a commercial film. “So I tried not to change anything as whenever I did, it was going all over the place,“ he says.
How badly have these two films affected his market, you wonder, and Nikhil, who was without work for three years after Kal Ho Naa Ho, quips, “My phone calls are still being answered so I think I'm still relevant. Earlier, I didn't have the confidence to make calls and would only invent work for myself and Dia's filmmaker husband, Sahil Sangha, who was my assistant then.“
This time his partners, wife Suparna, friends and the 300 people who worked with him on both films pulled him out, saying, “Galti hoti hai, chalo aur ek picture banate hain.“ His next, Bazaar, revolves around two men with the stock market in the background. It is about ambition, money, power and the underbelly of the city. “And by underbelly I don't mean Dharavi and the mafia. The real debauchery happens on the 50th floor of high-rises where Rs 100 crore business deals are struck,“ he explains. “I'm learning about all this as also stocks and dividends.“
The other is a thriller on the Indian Mujahideen, a script D-Day writer Ritesh Shah gave him when he was busy with Hero and Katti Batti. “I read it after they released in my introspective phase and immediately called Ritesh to ask if he'd given it away. He was waiting for me,“ Nikhil smiles.
Next year, he'll give two of his assistants a break. Gaurav Chawla is directing a slice-of-life film about two friends who discover the value of dosti during a wedding. “It sounds cliched but it's fun,“ he promises, adding that Ranjeet Tiwari's film is inspired by a true story of convicts sentenced to life imprisonment in the Lucknow Central Jail. “They start a band and discover pride, self confidence, a reason to wake up every morning.“

After Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar approached for Nikhil Advani’s Bazaar?

Sonali Joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; November 24, 2015)
Nikhil Advani’s next, Bazaar, has long been in news due to casting issues. Last month, hitlist had reported about the project being put on the backburner apparently since Hrithik Roshan, the original lead hero choice, remained non-committal about it. While the director has denied offering the film to Hrithik, sources suggest that Akshay Kumar has now been approached for the film.
A source says, “Hrithik heard the script, but couldn’t sign it because he is busy with other projects. Nikhil recently approached Akshay and feels he can do justice to the role. He is working with the actor in his next production, Airlift, and they share a comfort level. So, Akshay might just take it up.”
At the moment, the star has three films in his kitty — Airlift, Namastey England and Rustom. Nikhil and Akshay remained unavailable for comment, but a source close to the project says, “The director’s last two films (Hero and Katti Batti) did not do well at the box office and when Hrithik decided against signing Bazaar, it was a setback for him. He had decided to focus on Airlift until January, but now he is keen to revive the project by signing Akshay.”
