Clean chit for Nawazuddin Siddiqui in decade-old molestation case

CLEAN CHIT
FOR NAWAZ,
FAMILY IN
DECADE-OLD
MOLESTATION
CASE

Nearly ten years ago, Aaliya Siddiqui filed a molestation case at the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, against Nawazuddin and four other family members
HINDUSTAN TIMES (April 20, 2024)

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s wife, Aaliya Siddiqui, had filed a molestation case against him and his family nearly a decade ago. On Thursday, the 49-year-old actor and his family members were granted a clean chit by the court.

The special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court accepted a police closure report that cleared Nawazuddin and the other four accused. Aaliya had been ordered to appear in court multiple times, including to respond to the clean chit, but her failure to do so led to the acceptance of the closure report by special judge Ritesh Sachdeva.

Initially filed in Mumbai, Aaliya’s FIR against Nawazuddin and his family was later transferred to the Budhana police station in Muzaffarnagar in 2020. According to government counsel Pradeep Balyan, Aaliya alleged that Nawazuddin’s brother Minazuddin molested a minor in 2012, with the actor and other family members allegedly supporting him.

After an extensive investigation, the police filed a report last year exonerating the actor and his family of all allegations. The closure report gave a clean chit to Nawazuddin, his mother Mehrunisa and brothers Faizuddin, Ayazuddin and Minazuddin.

Nawazuddin and Aaliya have faced marital troubles for some time. In May 2020, Aaliya sent a divorce notice to the actor, but a year later, she withdrew it in an attempt to reconcile. However, in 2023, the couple separated again. Aaliya was also in another relationship, but in March of this year, she announced that she and Nawazuddin were willing to set aside their differences for the sake of their children. The couple has been married for 15 years.

I agree I am known as a star wife. I have never denied that, says Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s estranged wife, Aaliya

Aaliya: My identity has always been of a ‘star wife’
HINDUSTAN TIMES (June 20, 2023)

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s estranged wife, Aaliya, who is a contestant in the ongoing reality show, Bigg Boss OTT Season 2. said that Nawaz supported her decision to participate and also “chose to take care of our children”. During her introduction on the show, Aaliya acknowledged that her identity has been limited to being ‘Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s wife’.

She said, “I agree I am known as a star wife. I have never denied that. So many problems cropped up in my marriage that I wanted to make something of my own. This show provided me the perfect platform to create an identity of my own.”

Speaking of her marital issues, Aaliya — who shares two children, daughter Shora and son Yaani — with the actor, added, “When there is no respect in your relationship, that relationship weakens. I know with what difficulties I have spent last 19 years... I want to end all the troubles I have had in my married life and that’s why I am here.”

The former couple has been making headlines for the past few months, after Aaliya made allegations of harassment against Nawaz and his family. The two agreed to a settlement about their property dispute. Recently, Aaliya admitted to have moved on with a “mystery man”.

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui and wife Aaliya, who have been separated for years, stayed cordial for the sake of their children. Their differences, however, reached a tipping point in the past few years, as their divorce and battle for children’s custody went public and took an ugly turn. While the matter is still in court, it seems like emotionally, the two of them have moved on and are in a better space.

Aaliya, who is also a film producer, recently shared a picture on social media with a special friend, making it clear that she has moved on for good. While she and her kids are back in Dubai, she spoke to BT briefly during her visit to Mumbai. She said, “I was mentally exhausted. I have finally moved on and I am in a happy space.”

Without disclosing the name of her companion, she revealed, “He is Italian and works in the IT sector. We met in Dubai a year ago at a common friend’s party and hit it off. He was the one who approached me and we got talking. He is intelligent, simple, extremely respectful, loving and caring. Though he is more comfortable speaking in French and Italian, while I speak Hindi, our common language of communication is English. So, now he is learning Hindi and teaches me his languages. He wants to visit India soon.”

Aaliya’s decision to share this personal development on social media has evoked mixed reactions. While some are happy for her, others have been quick to pass judgements, given her ongoing marital conflict.

Aaliya explained, “Log bura bhala bolein, mujhe fark nahi padta. I am not scared of anyone. I am happy and wanted to share my happiness.”

Meanwhile, as per our sources, Aaliya will be making her onscreen debut as a contestant in Bigg Boss OTT.

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s estranged wife, Aaliya, has moved on from her troubled relationship. And she has no qualms sharing it with the world. However, she doesn’t want to divulge too much about her new romance just yet. Talking to us, she confesses, “I met him in Dubai. We have had this special bond for quite some time, but it is only now that I decided to share with everyone.”

The producer calls her partner a “good human being”. “He respects me as well as our bond. And that’s the most important thing for me,” she says.

‘IT’S THE RIGHT TIME’
When asked why she chose to reveal her relationship to the world now, Aaliya replies, “I decided to share the picture when my mind and heart agreed to it. I’ve been vocal about the issues of my previous relationship, so why not share my happiness.” She wants to let her relationship move organically and not label it.

‘TOOK ME 19 YEARS TO MOVE ON’
Many slammed Aaliya for moving on from her broken marriage too fast while her divorce proceedings are on. She says, “It took me over 19 years to move on from that relationship and find a new bond.”

On what basis is Nawazuddin asking for my kids’ custody? Pehle apne farz nibhana toh seekho-Aaliya Siddiqui

Aaliya: On what basis is Nawaz asking for my kids’ custody?
Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 3, 2023)

In a settlement proposal sent by Nawazuddin Siddiqui to his estranged wife, producer Aaliya Siddiqui, the actor is seeking custody of their children — daughter Shora (13) and son Yaani Siddiqui (7). Aaliya claims Nawazuddin didn’t play any part in raising their children and has no basis to seek their custody.

“His lawyers have sent us settlement papers. He has asked for the kids to stay with him, which is not possible at all. They have been with me since birth and don’t even want to go to their father. He has been an absent father since the beginning. A dad has many more responsibilities besides sending money. He never gave them a father’s love. On what basis is he asking for their custody? Pehle apne farz nibhana toh seekho, learn to look after them. Only I have the right to my kids’ custody,” Aaliya tells us.

She continues, “Nawaz didn’t give enough time to our children. Kishton mein pyaar mila hai bacchon ko. My daughter is 13 now and she can see how ugly things are between us (Aaliya and Nawaz). My son is very young and papa is one word he says rarely, because he hasn’t met him enough. He knows he has a papa, but he doesn’t know much about a father’s love or presence.”

Nawazuddin and Aaliya have been involved in an ugly feud for a while now and they wish to settle the disputes and get divorced. “My life with Nawaz has not been a pleasant one. He has changed as a person. The kids are suffering from an emotional upheaval and their studies are getting affected, too. So, I just want to get rid of his surname. I am not after anyone’s money. Bas sukoon chahiye ab,” states Aaliya.

She reveals that their kids want to stay in India, but Nawazuddin is forcing them to go to Dubai.

“My daughter is requesting him to not send them to Dubai. The kids have not met him in the last 10 months. While he wants to meet, the kids don’t want to,” she claims.

Nawazuddin has reached out for settlement: Aaliya’s lawyer

Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 30, 2023)

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui is ready to end his marriage to Aaliya and get a divorce. It is being revealed that, as part of the settlement, he will be withdrawing the defamation suit that he filed against her. Reports also say that the settlement process is for other problems in the marriage, and that an ugly fight over who gets the kids is not expected at this time. They have two kids together.

Nawazuddin and Aaliya have had ugly public fights for a long time now, with Aaliya claiming that Nawazuddin ‘disowned’ their children and alleging that his mother Mehrunisa harassed her by not giving her access to the actor’s Mumbai home. The actor reacted to the claims, saying that his estranged wife only wants money, which was denied by Aaliya.

Talking about the new developments, Aaliya’s lawyer, advocate Rizwan Siddiquee, tells us, “Through his lawyers, Mr Nawazuddin Siddiqui has already sent me a draft proposal of terms for settlement. The said draft was sent to me on March 25, 2023. It is a positive step that they are trying to settle the matter amicably. We shall be closing the matter soon if all issues are closed in the interest of all parties concerned, especially the minor children.”

Earlier this week, Nawazuddin also filed a defamation case against brothers Shamasuddin Siddiqui and Aaliya. The actor has demanded Rs. 100 crore and an apology letter. Giving an update on the same, Siddiquee shares, “When it comes to the defamation case, I can only say that we have not been served any copy of the same as yet, and in any event, even before the date of the said suit, Mr Nawazuddin himself has communicated the consent terms for settlement. I am therefore just ignoring the said suit at the moment and concentrating on a settlement between the parties.”

Nawazuddin Siddiqui files Rs. 100 crore defamation case against ex-wife, brother

નવાઝુદ્દીન સિદ્દીકી

BOMBAY TIMES (March 28, 2023)

Following months of allegations and counter allegations, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has reportedly filed a defamation suit before the Bombay High Court against his ex-wife Aaliya Siddiqui and brother Shamasuddin Siddiqui. According to reports, the suit seeks Rs. 100 crores as damages for the alleged defamation and harassment he faced due to misleading claims made by them.

As per reports, the suit requested the court to pass an injunction to permanently restrain the two from defaming the actor, and also withdraw existing comments. Nawaz has also accused his brother of financial fraud while he was managing the actor’s finances, adding that his brother and estranged wife allegedly misappropriated Rs. 21 crores.

Last month, Nawaz had filed a habeas corpus petition, seeking the whereabouts of his children. He recently told the court during a hearing that he will take back the petition if he is allowed to meet his kids. Aaliya is also facing an FIR after a complaint was registered against her by the actor’s family over a property dispute.

Nawaz’s lawyer claims actor’s wife married to first husband
HINDUSTAN TIMES (February 9, 2023)

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s lawyer Nadeem Zafar Zaidi recently held a press meet in Delhi and talked about the ongoing dispute between his client and his wife, Aaliya. In the meet, the lawyer claimed that Aaliya is still married to her first husband, Vinay Bhargav, days after Aaliya accused the actor and his family for harassing her at home.

Siddiqui and Aaliya got married in 2011. The two share two kids--Shora and Yaani. Reportedly, Siddiqui has moved out of his Mumbai house and staying in a hotel amid the dispute. His mother filed a complaint against Aaliya over property dispute.

India Today quoted the actor’s lawyer saying, “In 2001, Aaliya, an 8th class fail, married Vinay Bhargav. Then she came to Mumbai and became Anjana Pandey, then Anjana Anand in 2010. Then, she became Zainab and converted to Islam. After that, she married Siddiqui and divorced him in 2011 with mutual consent. But when Siddiqui’s career skyrocketed, she again came into his life as Aaliya. In 2020, she sent him a divorce notice which makes no sense as the two had already separated.”

The lawyer also alleged that Aaliya faked her date of birth, as it differs in her marksheet and passport.

Last month, Aaliya’s lawyer said that Siddiqui and his family members ‘ensured no food, bathroom is given to my client.’

“Mr Nawazuddin Siddiqui and his family members did everything possible to remove my client Mrs Aaliya Siddiqui from the house... Thereafter, through the police they threatened to arrest her and were calling her each day to the police station, after sunset,” he also said.

Nawaz giving ‘no food, bed, bathroom’ to wife, says lawyer

HINDUSTAN TIMES (February 2, 2023)

In a series of shocking allegations, the advocate of actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s wife Aaliya Siddiqui, has claimed that the actor and his family members have “ensured that no food, no bed, and no bathroom is given” to her.

Aaliya reportedly returned from Dubai with their children, Yaani and Shora, due to passport issues, and has been staying at Siddiqui’s Mumbai residence.

“Siddiqui and his family members did everything possible to throw out my client from the house. The family even filed an untenable criminal complaint of trespass against my client. Thereafter, through the police, they threatened to arrest her and were calling her each day to the police station, after sunset,” stated the lawyer, Rizwan Siddiquee.

Aaliya claimed that she was being harassed at her home after Nawazuddin’s mother filed a complaint against her over a property dispute. Siddiquee added, “I do not want to directly attribute the actions and the failures of the police department to them, yet the fact remains that no police officer ever came to protect my client’s rights. Not only her relationship with Nawazuddin was questioned before the police officers, but even the legitimacy of my client’s minor son was questioned. Yet the police officer did not act on the written complaint given by my client under Section 509 of IPC.”

"Will I ever get justice?," asks Aaliya Siddiqui on Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s mother's FIR

Aaliya on Nawaz’s mum’s FIR: Will I ever get justice?

HINDUSTAN TIMES (January 25, 2023)

Producer Aaliya Siddiqui aka Zainab took to Instagram to react to an FIR filed against her by her husband, actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s mother, Mehrunisa Siddiqui. According to police, there is a property dispute between Nawaz, his mum and Aaliya.

ANI tweeted, “Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s mother Mehrunisa Siddiqui filed an FIR against the actor’s wife Zainab. Versova police has called her for questioning. It is alleged that Zainab had an argument with Nawazuddin’s mother: Versova Police (sic).”

Sharing a photocopy of the FIR, Aaliya wrote on Instagram: “Shocking.. my genuine criminal complaints against my husband go unattended by Police. However, I enter my Husband’s house and a criminal complaint/FIR is immediately filed against me within a few hours. Will I ever get justice, this way (sic).”

In May 2020, Aaliya sent a divorce notice to Nawazuddin, citing domestic violence as the reason for separation. She also said that his brother, filmmaker Shamas Siddiqui, hit her. However, in 2021, she withdrew her decision to divorce Nawazuddin.

Even at this age, Teejan Bai performs on stage for hours and doesn’t forget a single word-Aaliya Siddiqui

‘Even at this age, she performs on stage for hours’

Nawaz’s producer-wife Aaliya revives biopic on folk artiste Teejan Bai; intends to roll film by year-end
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; September 8, 2022)

Of the many films that were affected by the pandemic was Aaliya Siddiqui’s next production, a biopic based on the life of Chhattisgarh’s legendary folk artiste, Teejan Bai. Now, the producer is ready to put the project — that was announced in 2019 and will see actor-husband Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a prominent role — back on track.

It is heard that Aaliya has locked the final script of the yet-untitled drama, which will trace the journey of one of the greatest exponents of Pandvani, a traditional performing art form involving narration of tales from the Mahabharata with musical accompaniments.

For Aaliya, being able to bring Padma Vibhushan Teejan Bai’s achievements on screen is a matter of immense pride. “I’ve always wanted to make a film on Amma. Even at this age, she performs on stage for hours and doesn’t forget a single word. It’s admirable how she fought the norms created by society, at a time when women barely had the right to speak up. It’s my honour to show her life story to the audiences. I had acquired the [necessary] rights before the pandemic, and I’m hoping to start the shoot by the year-end,” she says, adding that they are currently scouting for a director who can translate her vision on the screen.

While Aaliya was originally keen to rope in Vidya Balan for the lead role, the reshuffling of dates after the pandemic may render that difficult. The producer will announce the final cast before taking the film on floors.

I had returned money, claims Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s wife Aaliya

THE TIMES OF INDIA (July 16, 2022)

Mumbai: Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s wife Aaliya Siddiqui on Thursday approached the Amboli police through her lawyer, claiming she had returned the money to co-producer Manju Gaharwal after the latter levelled allegations of cheating.

Gaharwal, co-producer and creative of Aaliya’s first production venture ‘Holy Cow’, had approached the Amboli police claiming Aaliya had cheated her of Rs. 31 lakhs which she had invested in the film. Apart from the money, she also alleged Aaliya had not given her due credit for the film.

Gaharwal said in her complaint that she had known Aaliya since 2005. She also knew that Aaliya wanted to become a producer. The Holy Cow project started when Aaliya asked Gaharwal to become the creative producer of af ilm and look for cast. The cheques given to the cast also bounced, claimed Gaharwal.

Advocate Rizwan Siddiquee for Aaliya said “the evidence taken on record prima facie prove acts of theft, extortion, criminal intimidation and defamation on the part of the accused Garhwal.”

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s wife Aaliya withdraws divorce notice; actor says children are their priority

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; March 7, 2021)

In May last year, Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s wife Aaliya decided to end their marriage of 10 years. Her lawyer Abhay Sahai had informed BT that a legal notice was sent to Nawaz by his wife, seeking divorce and maintenance. In the days that followed, Aaliya disclosed the issues that led to cracks in their marriage, while Nawaz chose to not respond to the barrage of allegations.

In a turn of events, Aaliya has now decided to withdraw her legal notice for divorce. She says, “I was down with Coronavirus, and Nawaz not only took care of the children, but also me. This was despite what I said about him. He kept our differences aside and looked after me. Whenever I have been under stress, he has always helped me. This pandemic was an eye-opener. I realised what matters the most is the well-being of your children and good health. Our children need us, and if their happiness lies in us being together, we can keep our disagreements aside. I have withdrawn the legal notice that I had filed. I don’t seek divorce anymore, and I want to give this marriage a chance.” The couple has called it a truce, but Nawaz hasn’t really thought about a possible reconciliation yet and won’t rush into it.

Breaking his silence on his personal life for the first time, Nawaz, who’s currently shooting in Lucknow, says, “I prefer not to talk about my personal life, and I have never spoken ill of anyone. I don’t let negativity and hatred get to me. She is still the mother of my children, and we have shared a decade of our life together. I will always support her no matter what. Mera farz banta hai ke main unka khayal rakhu. Aaliya and I are not on the same page, we may not agree with each other, but our children have always been our priority. They should not suffer because of us. Rishtey bante bighadte rehte hai, unka asar bacchon pe nahi hona chahiye. I want to be a good father.”

That Nawaz has been a doting father to his kids, Shora and Yaani, is known. They often accompany him on set. He explains, “Insaniyat hi sab kuch hai. Pehle achhe insaan bano. Lately, we have seen so much suffering; if the pandemic can’t change you for the better, nothing will. I’ll always be there for them. And each one of us needs to introspect.”

I don't know the D of direction-Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Refusing to discuss the turmoil in his personal life, Nawazuddin Siddiqui on his latest release Raat Akeli Hai, and why he won't steer towards filmmaking
Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; August 2, 2020)

Nawazuddin Siddiqui's personal life has been under the scanner ever since wife Aaliya sent him a divorce notice in May. There have also been allegations of abuse and misconduct as his estranged wife made startling revelations on social media. The actor fields the question calmly, stating, "I don't want to say anything about my personal life in public."

He would rather concentrate on acting and his family occupation of farming in hometown Budhana. "I practice farming whenever I am back in my village," says the actor. While he kicked off 2020 with the release of his long-pending Ghoomketu in May, he has turned his attention to Raat Akeli Hai that dropped on Netflix on Friday. "When I shoot, it doesn't matter whether it is for theatres or OTT platforms. My job is to challenge myself to perform better. You should keep working and giving your best shot. It may take time, but one day, you will earn the fruits of labour. I had no clue if I would achieve success, but slowly and steadily, I have reached here."

After Kahaani (2012) and Raees (2017), Siddiqui is playing a cop again in the noir thriller, which marks the directorial debut of casting director Honey Trehan. Having known him over the years, he is thrilled that Trehan chose him for his first feature film. "I am familiar with his creative process. I got to know him well during the making of Raees, in which he cast me."

The actor rues that casting directors, despite being integral to a movie, do not get their due. "When people watch a film, they say the actors were well-chosen for their parts. They don't realise that it is the work of a casting director," says Siddiqui, who will next be seen in brother Shamas's directorial venture, Bole Chudiyan. "I don't even know the D of direction; I'm happy to leave it to my brother."

Aaliya Siddiqui slams affair rumours

Shreya Mukherjee (HINDUSAN TIMES; May 23, 2020)

The divorce dispute between actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui and his wife Aaliya aka Anjana Kishor Pandey took a new turn after there were rumours of her alleged affair with common friend Peeyush Pandey. After the latter rubbished the rumours, Aaliya joined Twitter to “put the truth” out.

“I am not into ‘any relationship’,” she wrote and added the photo was cropped to “make such ridiculous claims to divert attention”.

Talking to us, Aaliya says, “Some people only know how to cheat and malign others. Everyone knows of Nawaz’s affairs. Even Niharika Singh [who was in a relationship with him] said she was unaware of his marriage.”

The 37-year-old says the picture doing the rounds is manipulated, from a party. “If you check photos I tweeted, you’d know,” she adds.

As for Nawaz, she shares their kids Shora (9) and Yaani (5) would get scared seeing them fight. “He doesn’t want their responsibility so I’ve sought their sole custody,” she adds.

BT EXclusive: The man linked with Nawazuddin’s wife Aaliya Siddiqui rubbishes rumours of their affair

While Aaliya sent a legal notice to Nawazuddin seeking divorce, rumours about her alleged affair with a friend surfaced yesterday
Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; May 21, 2020)

A day after Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s wife Aaliya Siddiqui (original name Anjana Kishor Pandey) opened up to Bombay Times on why she decided to send the actor a legal notice seeking divorce and maintenance, reports in the media surfaced, hinting at an alleged relationship between her and their friend, Peeyush Pandey. A picture was published in certain media reports of the two, speculating ‘what’s brewing’. The said photo was told to be Aaliya’s WhatsApp display picture a few days ago.

We reached out to Peeyush, a media professional. Sounding shocked, he clarified, “I got to know about their divorce notice through the media. I am the scapegoat here. These link-up rumours are completely baseless and ridiculous! Why am I being dragged into this? I have nothing to do with this. People around them know about their feud and what is going on between them (their estranged relationship). I want to stay away from it. Why is my name and reputation being tarnished? I am in a relationship with someone, and this sort of rumour is extremely distasteful. This puts me in a spot with my family and friends. Luckily, my better half is aware of the truth as she is also friends with Aaliya. I will consult my lawyer as to what needs to be done to safeguard my interests.”

BT has learnt that the picture used by some media outlets of Aaliya and Peeyush was a cropped photo. The original photo, which we have seen, features three people — Aaliya, Peeyush and his girlfriend. (We were requested to withhold the photo from being published to safeguard the third person’s privacy).

A source close to Aaliya added, “Aaliya had that picture as her display photo a few days ago on WhatsApp. That picture has three people and not two as is being portrayed. She put it out there, because there’s nothing to hide. She is friends with Peeyush and his girlfriend and all three feature in that picture. There’s nothing more to it. To insinuate that she is having an affair, is playing dirty. People can part ways in a dignified manner without resorting to this kind of mudslinging. This wasn’t required.”

Speaking about the picture, Peeyush said, “That picture was taken at a party and there were over 20 people there. We all click pictures. It’s a normal thing to do. If there are three people in the picture and you crop it and use just two people, you can claim whatever you want to.”

Incidentally, Peeyush has worked with Nawaz in the past, and he revealed, “I met Aaliya through Nawaz. I have no professional engagement with him today, but I have worked closely with Nawaz for almost three years in the past. I used to handle him as a talent manager. I respect Nawaz as an artiste till date. He is a great actor and has struggled a lot. Success stories like him are rare to find. But, the current situation is discomforting, and I don’t want to be associated with this.”

Nawazuddin wanted to fulfill ammi’s wish-Shamas N Siddiqui

Shreya Mukherjee (HINDUSTAN TIMES; May 20, 2020)

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, his mother Mehroonisa Siddiqui and a few family members went to their hometown Budhana, Uttar Pradesh, last week, and all of them are under a 14-day quarantine. While many speculated that Siddiqui went home for Eid, he clarified on Twitter that it was their mother’s wish to go home, as she was unwell.

Negating Eid celebration reports, his brother, director Shamas N Siddiqui, also tweeted a copy of the travel permission they took.

“Ammi used to take care of our sister (Syama Tamshi Siddiqui). She couldn’t accept her death and has been getting panic attacks,” says Shamas, 36, adding that the day communication started, Nawaz took the permissions to go to Budhana.

Syama died at the age of 26 last year after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Shamas, who’s in Mumbai, adds, “Nawaz bhai wanted to fulfil ammi’s wish. They got their Coronavirus test done, and thankfully, results came negative. Though she’s doing better now, bhai has no plans of coming back to Mumbai. He’ll be back only when shootings resume.”

He also adds that the family won’t celebrate Eid this year. “Hamaara koi apna hume chhod ke chala gaya hai, hum kaise Eid manaa sakte hain?”

NAWAZUDDIN’S WIFE AALIYA FILES FOR DIVORCE

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s wife Aaliya has filed for divorce. She sent him a legal notice on May 7 seeking maintenance. “There are several serious reasons behind my problems with Nawaz,” Aaliya told ABP News. She added that problems between them have been going on since 2010, “but now things have escalated beyond repair”. The couple has been married for a decade and has two kids.

I don’t want this marriage anymore, says Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s wife Aaliya

In a chat with BT, Aaliya opens up on why she finally decided to end their marriage of 10 years
Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; May 19, 2020)

On Monday, Aaliya Siddiqui’s lawyer Abhay Sahai informed BT that a legal notice has been sent to actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui on behalf of his wife, who is seeking divorce and maintenance.

Aaliya, a budding film producer, told BT, “There are a lot of things that I don’t want to bring in the public domain as of now, but our problems started soon after we got married over a decade ago. Two months of lockdown gave me a lot of time to introspect. Self-respect is extremely important in a marriage. Woh meri khatam ho chuki thi, I didn’t have that. I was made to feel like a nobody, I always felt alone. His brother Shamas was also an issue. I have gone back to my original name, Anjana Kishor Pandey. I don’t want to be reminded that I am using someone’s identity for my benefit.”

She added, “I want to go with the flow. I haven’t thought much about the future, but I don’t want this marriage anymore. There are no chances of reconciliation.” Aaliya hopes to get the sole custody of her two children. She said, “I have raised them and I want their custody.”

Aaliya’s lawyer Abhay told BT, “We sent the legal notice to Nawazuddin on May 7, 2020, via email and WhatsApp, as we couldn’t send it through post due to the Coronavirus lockdown. Our client, Mrs Siddiqui, has also sent him the notice, but he hasn’t responded till date. The notice claims maintenance and divorce. I would not like to get into the contents of the notice, as the allegations are serious and sensitive to the Siddiqui family.”

We also reached out to Nawazuddin, who didn’t wish to comment at this time.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s wife Aaliya Siddiqui turns producer with Holy Cow; to feature the actor in cameo

Sai Kabir, Aaliya Siddiqui, Franck Priot and Mathias Duplessy

BOMBAY TIMES (June 13, 2019)

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s wife producer Aaliya Siddiqui unveiled the first look of her upcoming film, Holy Cow, at the recently concluded 72nd Cannes Film Festival.

The film’s story is based on the social chaos of our times, and a cow is used as a metaphor to project the larger reality. Currently, in the post-production stage, the film stars Sanjay Mishra, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Rahul Mittra, Sadia Siddiqui and Mukesh Bhatt in key roles, while Nawazuddin makes a special appearance. French music director Mathias Duplessy has composed the background score.

This social satire — a collaboration between Aaliya’s production house Y S Entertainment and Paris-based production house, Ghosts City — has been written and directed by Sai Kabir, who previously helmed Revolver Rani.

Aaliya, along with co-producer Franck Priot, Sai Kabir and Mathias Duplessy, attended a special presentation for the media and buyers, and also participated in a question-answer session at the Cannes Film Market.

Aaliya says, “The script of the film struck a chord with me during the very first reading. My aim is to make sensible, sensitive and viable cinema, and set up a boutique production house, not a film factory. After Holy Cow, I am working on another ambitious project. Titled Teejan Bai, it is a biopic of the legendary folk singer of the same name.”

BT Exclusive: Nawazuddin Siddiqui to back a biopic on legendary folk artiste Teejan Bai

BT captures an interaction between the actor, his wife Aaliya — the brain behind the film — and Teejan Bai, who recalls her journey and the storms she had to brave

It’s raining biopics in Bollywood and there’s one more in the making. BT has exclusively learnt that Nawazuddin and wife Aaliya Siddiqui are set to make a film on Chhattisgarh’s legendary folk artiste, Padma Vibhushan awardee Teejan Bai. The veteran artiste is the greatest exponent of Pandvani (Pandavon ki katha in Chhattisgarhi language), a traditional performing art form involving narration of tales from the Mahabharata.

Nawaz has been a huge admirer of Teejan Bai’s work since his early days as a theatre actor and has seen her perform live.

However, the thought of making a film on her was Aaliya’s, who will soon make a foray into cinema as a producer with a film helmed by Sai Kabir. The Teejan bai biopic will be her second outing as a producer. While the film is still being scripted, BT was the first to catch up with Nawaz, Aaliya and Teejan Bai in Mumbai. It was also the first time that the three were coming together for a discussion. Excerpts from a tête-à-tête with the trio...

As we entered the room of a suburban five-star hotel in Mumbai, Teejan Bai welcomed us with a warm namaste and expressed gratitude to Aaliya and Nawaz for dedicating a film to her. Though she isn’t too acquainted with the current crop of actors, she acknowledged Nawaz’s work and told us that she is aware of him as an actor. She even recalled her meeting with director Imtiaz Ali (during Tamasha, 2015) and said, “Itney bade director hamare ghar aaye, hamare saath khaana khaaya. Woh Tamasha bana rahey the tab. He spent almost four hours in my village. I showed him around.”

Explaining why she chose to make a film on Teejan, Aaliya explained, “I’ve always wanted to make a film on amma (Teejan Bai). Even at this age, she performs on stage for hours and doesn’t forget a single word. She fought the norms created by the society, at a time when women barely had the right to speak up and that’s admirable. I would love to see Amitabh Bachchan sir playing the role of her nana, as in reality, her grandfather played an integral part in her life and career. Interestingly, we discovered that Amitabh ji’s legendary father Harivanshrai Bachchan was also an admirer of Teejan ji. Amitji had also invited amma to his home on his birthday.”

Teejan was accompanied by her assistant, who helped us communicate with her better. He innocently pointed out that she barely remembers her age. While she says she is 63, she could be well in her 70s, but can still perform on stage for over an hour at a stretch. She cut in, “Government ne naukri diya tha. Main anpad gawar insaan kya jaanu. Naukri ke time age poocha toh aise hi bata diya. Mujhe baad mein pata chala ke mera age toh zyaada hai.”

In times of women empowerment and fight for gender parity, as Teejan recollects her life’s journey, and her success against all odds, you wonder why it took so long for Bollywood to notice her. She regrets her lack of education and despite enjoying global recognition and receiving various national and international awards, it is heartwarming to see her simplicity and honesty.

NAWAZUDDIN’S FANBOY MOMENT!
A self-confessed Teejan fan, Nawaz recalled, “Like hundreds of people, I have also been a fan of Teejan Bai. Her shows were always houseful. People used to stand on their seats and clap. They would queue up to catch a glimpse of her. I must have been 20 years old. I got goosebumps when I watched her perform live in Delhi for the first time, in the early 90s. Woh ek mahol create karti thi. Traditional folk artistes like her have a way of telling a story with their gestures, voice, and body language. It’s dramatic, OTT and magnificently enthralling. Legends like her have kept our country’s culture and art alive. You need to conserve what is yours. It hurts to see that today’s generation might not even know about her. ”

As far as his involvement in the film is concerned, he added, “Aaliya is my wife and I will support her as much as I can. I will be involved in this film as far as the creative part is concerned. Teejan Bai is a legend and we hope we can make this film relevant, not just for the film festivals, but also the audience in general.”

Happy to know that a film is being made on her, Teejan Bai said, “Maine apni zindagi mein kaafi utaar chadhav dekhi hain. Mujhe khushi hai ke mere jeevan par ek picture ban rahi hai. It reminds me of all the problems and hurdles that I have overcome in all these years.”

TEEJAN BAI’S LIFE STORY
Attributing her art to God, Teejan revealed that Pandvani was her calling and it came naturally to her. But that was a problem, as women weren’t supposed to perform on stage at that time. It was condemned. Since she didn’t pay heed to her parents’ disapproval, she was asked to leave the house. She explained, “I hail from Ganiyari (Chhattisgarh) and I’ve been performing since the age of 13. I am no poet. I used to hear my nana (grandfather) sing at night and I learnt it from him. Words and pictures came naturally to my mind. Pandvani yeh kaam ladkon ka hai, ladkiyon ka nahi, aisa mujhe bola gaya. Mujhe mana karte the sab log. Maa kehti thi ke sab gaon wale taana maarte hai. Main ladki hokar ladkon ka kaam kar rahi thi. I never understood why I can’t do it. Why shouldn’t a woman perform on stage? I was told that if I continued doing it, no one would marry my siblings and that we would be ostracised by our village and society. Uss zamaney mein Hindu dharam mein aisa samajhte the ki jinka gharaana accha nahi hai, wohi aurtein stage pe perform karti hai. I was told to focus on household chores. I felt, Bhagwaan ki katha bataane mein kyun katrana’, so I continued singing. Maine maa ka nahi suna isliye mujhe ghar se nikaal diya. I was very young then. I’ve looked after myself from a very young age. Mujhe chulha jalaana bhi nahi aata tha. I became a nomad. I travelled wherever the work took me. My parents loved me, but they were adamant that I give up Pandvani, which I didn’t do. I got married thrice. Even my in-laws would say, ‘Humein gaana gaanewali nahi, khaana bananewali bahu chahiye’.”

AWARDS, GLORIES AND A MEETING WITH INDIRA GANDHI
Speaking of awards and degrees conferred upon her, including the recent Padma Vibhushan, Teejan naively admitted, “I didn’t have the knowledge of these awards (Padma Awards) until people told me what they meant. When Bilaspur University awarded me with a D.Litt (doctorate) honour, much to their amusement, I told them that I can’t have two D.Litts as I was already offered one by Raipur University. I told them give it to someone else. They laughed and told me, ‘Aisey Dr ki upaadi aapko dus bhi mil sakti hai’. That’s when I thought, ‘Oh, I just got two. I want more (laughs!)’. I have four such D. Litt degrees today — from Raipur, Bilaspur, Raigarh and Jabalpur universities. I have even performed in front of Indira ji (former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi), and unko bhi mera performance pasand aaya tha. She thought that my courage was admirable. She even joked with me saying, ‘Chhattisgarh mein Mahabharat karvati ho kya?’ To which I replied, ‘Karvati nahi, sunaati hoon’. Impressed by my repartee, she couldn’t believe that I wasn’t educated.”

IMTIAZ ALI’S TEEJAN BAI CONNECT!
Like Nawaz, another huge fan of Teejan Bai from the industry is filmmaker Imtiaz Ali. Interestingly, his Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone-starrer Tamasha was strongly influenced by her craft.

Describing her as the ‘rock star of Indian tamasha (grand show)’, Imtiaz told BT, “Before starting Tamasha, Ranbir and I decided to visit the rockstar of Indian Tamasha, Teejan Bai. We went to her home in Ganiyari village (Raipur) where she still rehearses and figures her lines. She even performed for us. I wanted Ranbir to see how stories are told with drama, the real Indian way.”

Nawazuddin Siddiqui to spearhead a campaign for water conservation

Actor has been appointed by the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation to spearhead a campaign to preserve natural reserves
Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 9, 2017)

Nawazuddin Siddiqui has been roped in by the central government to spearhead a water conservation campaign for the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation. The Ministry is producing a celebrity-endorsed TV commercial, ‘The Auction’, to spread awareness on this issue and wants to tap the actor’s personal connect with his audience to enhance public participation, aiming to turn the campaign into a mass movement.

Confirming the news, the actor told Mirror, “We will start small, urging people to change their habits and save water at home before taking it forward aggressively. In my family, the responsibility lies with my daughter Shora who has been hearing stories about how precious water is since she was four, with added knowledge from textbooks and participation in the Versova beach clean-up operation, has been actively promoting the cause. Both my wife Aliya and I get scolded if we leave a tap open or waste water.”

Nawaz himself is equally concerned, having seen the river Hindon, which flows through his native village Budhana in the Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, shrink over the last five years into a stream of foul-smelling, filthy water full of chemical waste. “Nadi ab nala ban gayi hai. We can’t blame the government for what ails us, as citizens we need to take accountability and put preventive measures in places,” he asserts, rueing that even Mumbai is facing the same problem with its rivers like Mithi and Poisar contaminated with industrial effluents and sewage leading to flooding during monsoons and drastic climate change. “We have to come up with some disaster management plans as soon as possible, not just for the city and the state but for every part of the country.”

Nawaz’s grandfather and father were farmers and even he worked in the fields from the age of 10 to 22 when he left for Vadodara to pursue higher studies. He worked as a chemist before an interest in acting took him to Delhi’s National School of Drama (NSD) and on to Mumbai and Bollywood. However, he remains connected with his roots and after a state-commissioned research marked Budhana in the 'dark zone’ because of its sinking water levels, he was particularly disturbed. “A decade ago, you just had to dig 20-25 feet to pump water from the ground. Now, even at 250-300 feet you may not hit pay dirt,” he sighs, impressing on the need for optimal usage of water.

The actor remembers waking up at around 4.30 am as a child and heading straight for the fields where he would draw water from the tubewell for irrigation. The water was systematically distributed and not allowed to collect in one place and go waste. Last year, when he was at the Cannes Film Festival, he met a group of French filmmakers who had farms in Nice. They introduced him to a unique irrigation technique called centre pivot which delivers water through elevated pipes and rotating nozzles, each pipe irrigating one acre of land.

This cost-effective and water-efficient technique sprinkles water through elevated pipes and rotating nozzles. “I’ve introduced this innovative method of irrigation wherein each pipe can irrigate an acre of land and consumes less than half the quantity of water that we would otherwise use with conventional techniques and produces healthier crops. My association with this campaign should accelerate this work too,” exults Nawaz, who is open to doing everything possible, from commercials and ground campaigns to shorts and films to give an impetus to the government’s initatiave. “My background makes it easy for me to connect with the common man. Aur mujhe jo kuch bola jayega, mein bilkul karoonga. There is no time frame or deadline,” he asserts.

Will this initiative pave his entry into politics, you wonder, and he retorts, “No, I’m not interested in politics but I am interested in water conservation and river development.” What about Ganga rejuvenation? “I graduated from Haridwar so a lot of my memories are rooted in the Ganga which for us is more than a river. It’s a symbol of our culture and tradition, it’s time we gave the river the respect it deserves. I’ll be with the ministry for as long as they need me because it’s a cause very close to my heart,” Nawaz signs off.
