Nearly a decade after Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’ showed that Indian cinema could take China by storm, another ambitious Hindi film is eyeing the world’s second largest theatrical market. Sources have informed mid-day that director Nitesh Tiwari and producer Namit Malhotra are exploring a promotional campaign for ‘Ramayana: Part 1’ in China ahead of the magnum opus’s release. This signals renewed efforts to tap into a market that has largely remained shut to Bollywood since 2020.
According to sources, discussions are underway with Chinese exhibitors and distributors for a four-day promotional tour led by Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, and Sai Pallavi.
A source revealed, “The tentative itinerary includes a press event and screening at the Pingyao International Film Festival on September 24, followed by a multi-city promotional run during China’s Golden Week beginning October 1.”
The plan is awaiting approvals and has yet to be finalized.
China’s potential addition to the promotion and release plans further indicates how Malhotra and Tiwari intend to take ‘Ramayana’ — touted as the biggest film in Indian cinema — on a global stage.
mid-day reached out to the film’s production team, which didn’t respond till press time.
