Actor, producer and film critic Kamaal R Khan (54) was arrested by Malad police on Tuesday for his derogatory tweets in 2020. Shiv Sena member Rahul Kanal had complained that Khan operated two Twitter handles, which he frequently used for posting distasteful tweets about celebrities.

A lookout circular had been issued against Khan as he was not in Mumbai then. As soon as he landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International air-port late on Monday, police were informed and he was detained.

In October 2020, Kanal, who runs a social organization, complained about Khan’s tweets on Akshay Kumar’s film ‘Laxmmi’. Kanal said the tweets were aimed at spreading hatred and creating enmity between communities. Kanal also mentioned a distasteful tweet Khan had posted against filmmaker Ram Gopal Verma. Subsequently, Malad police registered an FIR against Khan for defamation under provisions of IPC and Information Technology Act.

“We tried to contact Khan in 2020 for making enquiries but we learnt that he had moved to Dubai, following which a lookout circular was issued against him,” a senior police officer said.

Khan was produced before a Borivali magistrate court on Tuesday. In the remand application, police said they wanted to probe Khan’s intention behind such tweets and if he was doing it on instructions from someone. They also want to probe if Khan was demanding money from people in the film industry against threats of posting negative film reviews on social media.

The Mumbai Police arrested actor and film critic Kamaal Rashid Khan, also known as KRK, late on Monday night in connection with allegedly defamatory tweets posted by him in 2020. Among these were posts about late actors Rishi Kapoor, who was hospitalised at the time, and Irrfan. On Tuesday, a Borivali Court sent him to 14-day judicial custody.

Khan was nabbed from the Mumbai airport after he arrived from Dubai, the official from Malad police station said. The police did not reveal details of the tweet. The official said a lookout circular had earlier been issued against him.

An FIR was also registered against him in 2020 under various Indian Penal Code sections including 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 500 (punishment for defamation), and provisions of the Information Technology Act, he said.

Rahul Kanal, who had filed a complaint against Khan in 2020, told us post his arrest, “I’m really happy with the way the Mumbai Police has acted in this matter. There’s a difference between being a film critic and being a rabble-rouser. He may call himself a filmmaker and critic but he is the latter a person with filthy thoughts, which he puts out in the public domain without any care or concern.

He’s but just a foul-mouthed person with social media following. His tweets, most of the times, are derogatory and defamatory toward public figures, especially from the film industry. He has spared almost no one. I was extremely enraged with some of his comments and I have registered complaints against him in many police stations in the city in recent years. The one registered in Malad is one of the many complaints against him, registered in 2020. I was passing Malad when I read his tweet against Mr Rishi Kapoor who had just passed away. It was in such bad taste and so derogatory that I couldn’t stop myself from reaching out to the police. I am really glad that with his arrest, we are setting a precedent for everyone who thinks social media is a great place to create trouble, show disrespect, and put out derogatory stuff against just about anyone. An example has to be set for people like KRK who misuse social media and disrespect people.”

HINDUSTAN TIMES (August 31, 2022)

Actor and self-proclaimed film critic Kamaal R Khan aka KRK has been sent to 14-day judicial custody by Borivali Court, reported ANI. He was arrested by the Mumbai police late Monday night after he arrived from Dubai. The 47-year-old’s arrest was allegedly in relation to a defamatory tweet, an official from the Malad police station said. While the police didn’t reveal the details of the tweet that got him in trouble, several reports indicate that it was in relation to KRK’s questionable tweets about late actors Irrfan and Rishi Kapoor in 2020.

An official said a look out circular was earlier issued against him. An FIR was also registered against him in 2020 under various Indian Penal Code sections, including 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 500 (punishment for defamation), and provisions of the Information Technology Act, he said. The Mumbai police came to know about his arrival on Monday and immediately arrested him, the official added.

After the news of his arrest surfaced, many social media users came forward to express their views. While a few supported KRK, others wondered about the relief that Bollywood stars must be feeling right now.

“Day started with good news,” commented a user, while another one wrote, “Waiting for his reviews on Mumbai police sewa pani (services).”
