A ’90s supermodel with a diploma in commercial arts from the city’s Rachna Sansad Institute, Tapur Chatterji has now forayed into interior designing. The model-turned-entrepreneur recently designed Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Kemmu’s daughter Inaaya’s nursery, along with their study and recreational area. Soha’s encouraging response prompted even her actress sister-in-law, Kareena Kapoor, to get Tapur to do a “bit of work” in son Taimur’s room.
“I’d help family and friends set up their homes and their appreciation prompted me to take up designing professionally, focussing on it full-time a year-and-a-half ago,” informs Tapur.
Sharmila
Tagore who worked with her grandfather, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, in films
like Anupama, Satyakam and Chupke Chupke, and her daughter Soha were
confident Tapur would be able to design a classy nursery for them and
she started working on the room during the early stages of Soha’s
pregnancy. “Since we were clueless about the child’s gender, we steered
clear of the conventional blues and pinks, sticking to safe, off white
walls with wooden flooring. After Inaaya was born, I plastered one of
the walls with a forest-theme wallpaper, getting beautiful moon and star
lights from London and adding a cloud light over the changing table,”
explains Tapur saying that since Soha was a first-time mother and she
has a daughter too, essentials were at the top of their mind rather than
the aesthetics.
The crockery cabinet in the recreation space is
her favourite corner while Soha despite spending a lot of time in her
study, often finds herself heading to her daughter’s nursery. Just
outside the room is a wall of family pictures. “I’ve deliberately kept
another wall empty for Kunal who’s a passionate photographer to fill it
up with more photographic memories,” says Tapur.
A recipient of the Presidents’ Award for poster designing, Tapur quit modelling when she was at her peak. Around 2011, when she was expecting her daughter she decided to pursue her love for designing further, believing she’s inherited her creative streak from her grandfather. “He did up his bungalow at Carter Road and wowed many international artists. I remember the coconut tree that had grown inside the house. He refused to cut it and designed the house around it,” she reminisces.
Soha praises her interior decorator for executing their vision. “She has impeccable taste and personally oversees every detail. Tapur extends beyond the scope of work and is a wonderful person to work with on something as precious and potentially stressful as a baby’s room,” says the satisfied mom.
