Kriti Sanon on plans for 2018, her sister’s launch and meeting Vishal Bhardwaj

After four years, Delhi-born Kriti Sanon admits that Mumbai feels like home and has even got herself a suburban pad, designed to reflect her personality. She shares the two-bedroom apartment with younger sister Nupur who’s a social media celebrity already thanks to her renditions of the Dilwale chartbuster, “Janam Janam”, and Aye Dil Hai Mushkil’s soulful hit “Channa Mereya”,

The ‘other’ Sanon who is 21, is an aspiring actress and you wonder if Kriti, experienced in the ways of Bollywood, will help pave the way for her? Buzz is, Sajid Nadiadwala who introduced her in Heropanti three years ago, will launch Nupur next year. “I got Heropanti on my own merit and expect my sister to do the same. Sajid sir treats Tiger (Shroff) and me like kids and we are lucky he was there for us. He’s a prolific producer and I’d like him to guide Nupur too. But eventually it’s her journey and she’s finding her own way around like I did,” Kriti retorts.

This has been a year of mixed fortunes for Kriti, with the hit Junglee Pictures production, Bareilly Ki Barfi, and the Dinesh Vijan-directed dud, Raabta. The Ashwiny Iyer-Tiwari directed small-town romcom was an image-breaker, and her performance as the spitfire Bitti got her the thumbs-up. “Yes, the response to Bitti, an evolved, progressive liberal-minded working girl who questions gender bias was overwhelming. It was a role I’d been waiting for and Ashwiny’s confidence in me was encouraging,” Kriti admits, but is quick to point out that she is not re-uniting with the director for her 2018 kabbadi-drama. “Ashwiny and I like to explore as many stories as possible. We’ve shared a beautiful friendship but it doesn’t have to only revolve around work. In fact, she hasn’t even discussed the cast of her next with me.”

She’s ending the year on a high, performing alongside Salman Khan during the Da-Bangg concert in the Capital and has already started prepping up for the laugh riot, Arjun Patiala, also featuring Diljit Dosanjh, for which she will re-unite with Dinesh. “I’m excited to be working with Diljit whose Punjabi films I’ve watched. They’re hilarious! Arjun Patiala is a larger-than-life drama and I’m looking forward to cracking everyone up next,” she says.

A few months ago, National Award-winning filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj had also met Kriti to narrate a romcom tentatively titled Padeeu, which will be produced by him and will mark the directorial debut of one of his assistants. Recently, he approached her again for Churiya, a two-heroine project set in Rajasthan. “I wouldn’t want to comment on these films but I would love to work with Vishal sir. His vision is incomparable and a cinematic style unique in Bollywood. He is a respected filmmaker and I would be a fool not to work with him. I’ve watched every film he’s ever written, directed and produced,” she gushes.

She’s only done four films — Heropanti, Dilwale, Raabta and Bareilly Ki Barfi — in the last three years. Why isn’t she capitalising on her hits? “It’s great to go with the flow and learn on the move,” she explains. “As a comparatively new actress, every film is one more step in this journey to prove myself and better myself as a performer. When something comes my way, I never ignore it. If I like the script and want to work with that particular filmmaker, I’ll say yes immediately. Else I’m happy to wait,” she smiles.

To ring in the New Year, Kriti flew off to Switzerland from Mumbai, with good friend Sushant Singh Rajput, joining Dinesh and a few other close friends from the Raabta crew, who were holidaying through Europe and had arrived in the Swiss Alps from Paris. The bunch enjoyed binging on continental delights, while skiing and trekking in the snow. Quiz her on New Year resolutions and Kriti says she wants to check “belly dancing” and other “modern dance forms”.
