Anurag Kashyap and Guneet Monga’s Monsoon Shootout, directed by Amit Kumar and featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, will finally see the day of light. The noir thriller premiered four years ago in the Midnight Screenings section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

“It revolves around a cop, Vijay Varma, who has to decide whether he should or should not shoot a suspect played by Nawaz. The same story is told three times in different ways which is what makes the film unique. The distributors then were unsure about whether the audience would understand a film like this,” admits Guneet who excited by the idea sold her apartment to fund the film.

She goes on to add that the narrative demanded some amount of violence and the way it’s shown in the film could be another reason for distributors to shy away. “We patiently waited for the right time to release it. Over the last few years I have seen a collective consciousness towards good content with films like Newton, Hindi Medium and Haraamkhor making waves. The market has opened up with big digital players and new buyers coming in and I am hopeful that after Haraamkhor and Monsoon Shootout, I’ll be able to bring out Peddlers, Vasan Bala’s crime thriller featuring Gulshan Devaiah, Nishikant Kamat and Nimrat Kaur,” exults Guneet who had been really depressed these two years but now it’s all well that ends well.
