After the success of Kahaani in 2012, featuring Vidya Balan as a pregnant woman Vidya Bagchi searching for her missing husband in Kolkata, director Sujoy Ghosh had announced that Durga Rani Singh would be his next project. While speaking to Mirror the director revealed that the script has been scrapped but he borrowed the title to christen his leading lady. “Durga Rani Singh... It's a really cool name so we thought of naming Vidya's character that in Kahaani 2 but it has nothing to do with the story of the earlier film. Obviously, it is buried now since we have used the name in this film,“ sighs the filmmaker. Prod him on the character and he reveals that this Durga Rani Singh is a 'wanted' criminal having committed a kidnapping and a murder. “Arjun Rampal plays the cop who is chasing after her,“ informs Sujoy who returned to the City of Joy to film Kahaani 2. “It's a Kolkata you haven't seen before. We have also shot on the outskirts of the city, including Chandannagar. Kahaani 2 will not continue from where the original left off, it is a completely different story.“

The suspense drama was to earlier release on November 25 but has been pushed forward by a week to December 2 to avoid a clash with Gauri Shinde's Dear Zindagi, featuring Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan. Commenting on this, Sujoy says, “There is another week after November 25, so there is no point on releasing it on the same day. I want to see Dear Zindagi first day first show.“
