From Aamir in Sarfarosh to
Salman in Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Shah Rukh in Raees,
Nawazuddin Siddiqui has become a Khan favourite. “You
forgot Kabir Khan,“ he grins.“Bajrangi... is my second film with him
after New York. I respect him and am comfortable working with him. Ditto,
Salman. During Kick we were shooting in Mumbai so we didn't interact
much. But I got to know him better while shooting in Kashmir.“
He recalls how Salman's hearing came up during the shoot. He flew to Mumbai to be in court, zipping back to the Valley after getting bail. “He must have been feeling the pressure, we too were nervous while watching the proceedings on TV, but he showed no signs of tension,“ he says.
Buzz is, Nawaz was approached to play a negative role in Salman's next. “I don't want to play a typical hero or villain. I am more interested in characters with shades of grey, layers and complications,“ avers the 41-year old actor. He plays a cop in Raees, chasing SRK who's a bootlegger. “I was curious about working with a superstar, but SRK turned out to be the most humble co-star in the world,“ he raves, admitting that he still doesn't consider himself a star. “If someone points at me, I think that they are looking at someone behind me. I don't want to ever feel like a star.“
His The Lunchbox co-star, Irrfan Khan, is doing well, not only in Bollywood but Hollywood too, with blockbusters like Jurassic World and the upcoming Inferno. Nawaz points out he has worked in a Hollywood film, Lion, and is not dying to do more. “I did Lion because the director sent me a long e-mail saying he wanted only me for this two-scene appearance. But great films are being made in India too and I'm happy doing them. It's not as if I'll be recognised only if I have the Hollywood stamp,“ he retorts.
He has just turned producer with his brother Shamas's short film, Miyan Kal Aana, which premiered at Cannes. Any plans of producing a feature film? “The focus is on acting now,“ he says shortly.
After a daughter, Shora, he is now a proud dad to a son, Yaani, with whom he shares a birthday, May 19. He smiles, “I went nappy shopping recently.“
