Guess who is the latest
insomniac to have hit town! Sources say it is none other than India's
most famous comic show host, Kapil Sharma. One hears that film units
that choose to promote on his set are often called at night because
Kapil reportedly has a sleeping problem. Put simply, he prefers to stay
awake at night and sleep well into the afternoon.

There's a cute
anecdote doing the rounds that when Rekha went on Kapil's set, the
yesteryear diva and a few of his close friends were awake until 4 am,
ensconced in the diva's makeup van, listening to her singing! There are
innumerable such instances of his nocturnal ways.
High on this
list is also Shahid Kapoor. In fact, with the actor, the clock stands
reversed. He goes to the gymnasium only after eight. Naturally, after
working out for a couple of hours, he is all wired up and cannot sleep.
So, he calls friends over to unwind or even better, goes out with them.

Sasha's neighbour, Priyanka Chopra is another nightbird. PC, who is a
multi-tasker, believes snoozing is a waste of time. The girl, whose
adrenaline levels are unmatchable, rehearses her singing, reads scripts,
has meetings and keeps herself up until 2 am without an issue, say
insiders.

Filmmaker Karan Johar too, doesn't care much about his
40 winks. An actress friend of KJo says, “Besides the fact that he
loves people, another reason Karan entertains so much is because he
loves staying awake.“ In the last couple of years, Aamir Khan, another
confirmed insomniac, has become a regular at KJo's home. These two can
stay awake until the wee hours of the morning. Even otherwise, the
superstar stays up in his own office till 6 am, talking shop. Those who
interact with him late into the night say Aamir often says his
goodnights only post 7 am!

When you talk insomniacs, Indian cinema
legend Amitabh Bachchan can't be left out. Big B has admitted that he can
forgo sleep to listen to music or do his writing. His wife Jaya
Bachchan put things in perspective when she gave an interview to
Filmfare sometime ago, saying that Mr Bachchan often stays up late to
write his blog posts. She said, “That's the time he can get his thinking
machinery going, when everything is quiet and there's no one around to
distract or disturb him.“ Jaya also clarified that though people have
been under the impression that her husband suffers from insomnia, there
is no truth to it. “He can sleep anytime, anywhere,“ she said, adding, “Ask the people he works with. He can fall asleep on the set, right on
his seat, between shots.“ So there you go, Mrs Bachchan just debunked
one of Bollywood's biggest myths - that of Big B being a nightbird.

Of course, many are aware that while working on the music of
Taal, when Academy Award winner A R Rahman told Subhash Ghai to meet him
at 5, the filmmaker automatically assumed it was 5 pm. Only later did he
realise that Rahman meant 5 in the morning. Likewise, while working
with Rahman on the music of Jab Tak Hai Jaan, the late Yash Chopra, who
loved his sleep, would often ask his filmmakerson Aditya to fill in for
him. Good-naturedly, Yash is said to have told another filmmaker,
“Yaar, Rahman is brilliant. But I love my
sleep. So, burning the midnight oil with him is something I cannot do.“
Of the young actors today, Aditya Roy Kapur is said to be a
nightbird. But surprisingly, the one who has come around from being
a self-admitted insomniac to sleeping early is his bhabhi Vidya Balan.
There was a time when the National Award-winning actress used to shock
people by reverting to their texts as late as 3 am. Now, Vidya insists
that marriage has cured her sleep disorder to a large degree. Since her
husband Siddharth Roy Kapur is more disciplined in his sleeping habits,
she too has turned over a new leaf.
