Farah Khan is confident that big films will get people back to theatres

Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 26, 2021)

Only the return of big Bollywood entertainers will enable the revival of the big screen, after the lull induced by the Coronavirus pandemic, feels filmmaker Farah Khan.

“When people come out of the pandemic and go to the theatre, they’ll want to go to watch a big-ticket entertaining film because everything else I’m getting to watch while I sit in my bedroom,” Khan says, adding, “So, if I’m going to take time out of my life, wear a mask and get into a theatre with other people, it better be paisa vasool entertainment.”

According to the choreographer-filmmaker, the “big fat entertainers” will definitely come back for the theatre goers. “Because I’m happily watching small and medium films on the OTT platforms, and I’m loving that. But the big feel and experience, that I want to watch on the big screen. I may go to the big screen only to experience that,” admits the 56-year-old.

And to buttress her theory, she goes on to highlight the success stories of Hollywood films such as Godzilla vs. Kong and Wonder Woman 1984, both of which released earlier this year.

“They worked because that’s something you want to go and watch on the big screen. At least initially, when there will be a little trepidation and hesitation, you’ll want to go to watch a big fat Bollywood entertainer,” Khan tells us.

Talking about the opening revelry and hoopla of Bollywood films on the big screen, of which she has mastered the art, with films such as Main Hoon Na (2004), Om Shanti Om (2007), and Happy New Year (2014) being the case in point. So, when can we expect her next project?

“I’ve learnt that it is better to announce when the project starts and it’s the first day of the shoot. There are so many times when the press leaks it out when you’re just thinking about it,” says the filmmaker, currently judging a virtual talent-hunt reality show.

Khan adds that at times she gets shocked “when people announce details about her project at a time when there’s no clarity on what will happen next” in life.

RADHE’S HYBRID RELEASE PLANS STUNS THE INDUSTRY

Almost all Hindi films scheduled for release in April have been pushed ahead as the second wave of Coronavirus has wreaked havoc. Now all eyes were on the releases in May. There was buzz that the much awaited Salman Khan starrer, Radhe, would also be pushed ahead. After all, it’s a big film and with theatres shut in most parts of the country, it won’t be able to do the desired business.

Shockingly, yesterday, the makers announced that Radhe would release as scheduled on May 13, on Ramzan Eid. However, it’ll have a hybrid release. It means that it’ll release in theatres and simultaneously on ZeePlex as well. ZeePlex is a pay-per-view platform. It's different from say a Netflix or Amazon Prime where one pays a subscription fee for a month or a year and can then enjoy all the content available on the platform for that period. In the case of ZeePlex, one needs to pay in order to watch a particular film. Also, one needs to see it within a stipulated time, that is within 12 or 24 hours of paying for the film.

Hollywood has adopted this model and is doing well. In fact, Warner Bros has been similarly releasing all its films in cinemas and also on its pay-per-view platform, HBO Max, in North America (USA and Canada). This approach of Warner Bros commenced with the 2020 Christmas release, Wonder Woman 1984. This was a time when most cinemas were shut in the USA and the residents were able to enjoy the Gal Gadot starrer at the same time as the rest of the world thanks to its same-day digital release. Many felt that this would sound the death knell for cinemas. The argument was that if a film is available online, most viewers would not prefer going to the theatres. However, this notion was proved wrong last month with the release of Godzilla vs. Kong. The film got record viewings on HBO Max but at the same time, managed to get record footfalls post pandemic in cinemas as well. As of April 18, Godzilla vs. Kong collected $80.6 million in North America. Its worldwide total is $390.9 million and is all set to soon cross the $400 million mark. Interestingly, it was made at a budget of approximately $165 million. In other words, it has proved to be a profitable venture.

Talks of Radhe’s hybrid release have been going around since a long time in the trade. Then, the argument was that the hybrid release won’t affect box office as not all have access to streaming platforms. Hence, those who want to see it in cinemas would still do so. However, things have changed a lot in the last few weeks. Theatres in most cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Jaipur etc are shut. There’s no guarantee if the administration in these places would allow cinemas to resume operations by May 13. In fact, cinemas in many more cities can also shut in the coming days since the pandemic refuses to die down. In such a scenario, one wonders where Radhe would get a theatrical release and what would be its collections from the few places where it manages to release in cinemas? Hence, most viewers would have no choice but to watch it in their homes. The question that now arises is – how many of them would actually pay a certain amount to watch Radhe on ZeePlex? Indian viewers are different from that of the USA and are still stingy when it comes to paying online for content. As a result, most viewers would access the film on pirated websites.

In other words, Radhe’s domestic box office would be very poor. While the number of people paying to view it on ZeePlex will also be very few. One then wonders how Zee Studios would be able to recover the Rs. 230 or Rs. 240 crores it has paid to producers Salman Khan, Sohail Khan and Atul Agnihotri to buy the film.

The other point of view is that a large number of viewers, especially the affluent one and those living in cities would be ready to shell out money to see Radhe on ZeePlex. Moreover, it will have a release Overseas where it’ll be released only in cinemas. In UAE, it’s expected to have a record opening as it releases on Eid, a huge festival there, and also because it’s the first big Hindi film to release in more than a year. The UK box office is opening up from May 11. USA, New Zealand and Australia markets are already back on track to a great extent. So the makers are hoping to recover a chunk of investment through international box office.

A list of top 10 grossers in Hindi post Covid-19

Box Office India Trade Network

The box office in Hindi circuits has been a disaster since cinemas opened in October 2020. Major films have avoided the ticket counter as maskers believe the audience will not be there. The best we have seen post Coronavirus is 4 crore nett of SURAJ PE MANGAL BHARI.

This was actually the first new releases when cinemas reopened in October. SURAJ PE MANGAL BHARI has slowly crept up to the 4 crore nett mark but it took ten weeks to get there. The next best is WONDER WOMAN 1984 with 3.37 crore nett and then with around 3 crore nett it is VIJAY THE MASTER (dubbed version of Tamil film MASTER) which is a big GROSSSER in Tamil Nadu crossing the 100 crore nett mark but had no takers in Hindi circuits.

VIJAY THE MASTER fetched over 15 crore for its rights but theatrically it was a token gesture release with satellite and digital being main reasons for the price and this 15 crore is being asked for satellite only. The Hindi version had a huge release in West Bengal of over 125 cinemas but it took the whole weekend to cross just 10 lakhs nett.

The Tamil version of MASTER did pretty well for a day or two in Mumbai city and some other centres of Maharashtra but that was about it and it also collected 3 crore nett. The all formats total in Hindi circuits was 6 crore nett nett apprx which makes it more than SURAJ PE MANGAL BHARI but like that WONDER WOMAN 1984 and TENET were even more. The only other films to get over 1 crore nett in Hindi are TENET and INDOO KI JAWANI.

The top ten grossers in hindi language post Covid are as follows and most of them are still running at places due to lack of new releases but collections are very limited.
1. Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari - 4,06,00,000
2. Wonder Woman 1984 (Hindi) - 3,37,00,000
3. Vijay The Master (Hindi)  - 2,96,00,000
4. Tenet (Hindi) - 2,18,00,000
5. Indoo Ki Jawani - 1,14,00,000
6. Tom & Jerry (Hindi) - 65,00,000 (10 days)
7. Madam Chief Minister - 57,00,000
8. Shakeela - 35,00,000
9. Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi - 30,00,000
10. Chakra Ka Rakshak (Hindi) - 25,00,000

Chinese film Detective Chinatown 3 heading for world record opening

DETECTIVE CHINATOWN 3 Still - Everett - EMBED 2020
Box Office India Trade Network

The Chinese film DETECTIVE CHINATOWN 3 is heading for a world record opening as it looks to smash all opening day box office records seen in any country. The record till date stands as the $157 million of AVENGERS: ENDGAME in North America and DETECTIVE CHINATOWN 3 had already collected $100m in advance for day one.

The figures at 1 pm China time stand at around $131 million and that $157 million figure looks a sitting duck for the film. It is way ahead of the recent big opening days seen in China which are around the $60m mark. AVENGERS: ENDGAME opened at $66 million, CRAZY ALLEN opened at $64 million and AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is $60 million. DETECTIVE CHINATOWN 3 has already more than doubled these opening days and there is more to come.

The numbers are just phenomenal and if things go well, DETECTIVE CHINATOWN 3 will maybe have a $400 million plus weekend which has never been seen before anywhere in the world. AVENGERS: ENDGAME grossed around $357 million over its first weekend.

There is hardly any interest in India as to what a Chinese film is doing in China but these numbers are of huge importance to Hollywood as we see simultaneous theatrical and PVOD releases for major films. The way the Chinese market is going it to be the biggest market in the world and as seen with WONDER WOMAN 1984, these PVOD releases make a dent in China and you just cant afford to do that with the tent-pole Hollywood films as the revenue is just too big.

Big films may improve the scenario but smaller films are helping theatres to get going

Big films may improve the scenario but smaller films are helping theatres to get going
Shreya Mukherjee (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 11, 2021)

Soon after theatres reopened in mid-October last year, filmmakers have been testing waters to see if audiences are now stepping out and going to watch films in cinemas. Is Love Enough - Sir and Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari initiated the chain of new releases in Bollywood in November 2020, followed by Indoo Ki Jawani and Shakeela in December and Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi marked the beginning of this year. Meanwhile, Hollywood biggies — Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984 (WW’84) — too helped up the box office collections. Having covered almost the first quarter of the new beginning since cinemas reopened, industry insiders talk about the present scenario.

BOX OFFICE RESPONSE
Trade expert Komal Nahta feels the only “relief is that films are running and cinemas are functioning”. Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari also did a bit better business than other Hindi films, shares exhibitor-distributor Brijesh Tandon.

Trade expert Atul Mohan says, “The re-released films and new ones made about 5-10% business. Only Tenet, WW’84 made about 15-20%. After the difficult 2020, we must get things running with big films.”

ALL EYES ON BIG FILMS
With big-budget films expected to release March onward, and Shibasish Sarkar, CEO, Reliance Entertainment group, announcing that either Sooryavanshi or ’83 will release during Holi, has given many hope. “Many theatres are still shut, 50% occupancy cap is a concern. Turn-around time given the sanitisation procedure has reduced the number of shows. Now, only big films can change the game,” shares distributor-exhibitor Akshaye Rathi.

Raj Kumar Mehrotra, general manager, Delite Cinemas, shares Madam Chief Minister starring Richa Chadha releasing this month might bring business. “Till now, we had 15-20% occupancy, which went up to 30-35 % during Tenet, WW’84. Once big films come, it’ll go over 70%,” he says.

VACCINATION will help
“Vaccination will improve collective sentiments and provide courage. With all precautions, theatres are ready. Now, audience should extend support,” shares Rathi.

Highlighting how reworking of ticket pricing is a determining factor to increase footfalls, Mohan adds, “Pandemic has hit the economy hard, leading to job losses. If ticket pricing is on the lower side, it might draw more people to the theatres.”

A LOOK AT THE BOX OFFICE BUSINESS SO FAR (All approx figures)

Tenet: ₹15 crore

Wonder Woman 1984: ₹12.5 crore

Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari: ₹2.5 crore

Indoo Ki Jawani: ₹60 lakh

Shakeela: ₹30 lakh

Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi: ₹25 lakh

Wonder Woman 1984 Review: Sequel Floats On One Wing - The Returning Gal Gadot
Box Office India Trade Network

Cinemas returned a few months back and some places are doing better than others. We have had two films with an all India release and they are TENET and WONDER WOMAN 1984 and both have had similar performance as far as the ratio of business from each circuit.

It is pretty clear that Nizam/Andhra and Tamil Nadu are ahead of other places in terms of a returning audience. Both these circuits are giving double their normal contribution for a Hollywood film at present while the rest of circuits are doing less. The other circuit doing better is West Bengal as that had a early start with good footfalls during Puja in October.

Tamil Nadu is the first state to allow 100% occupancy which is great news. But it's also surprising as it was expected that the Centre would make the decision to allow full occupancy and then the state would decide if the pandemic issue in their state allows full occupancy.

The hope will be that all goes well when Tamil films release on Pongal as this will mean more states allowing full occupancy. What will not be needed is a rise in infection rate in Tamil Nadu after allowing 100% occupancy as that will put plans back across India. Europe saw big rises in infections after sporting events in February but that was as crowds of 50,000 plus gathered and obviously it is not likely that this much crowd will gather together at cinemas.

The ratio of WONDER WOMAN 1984 with the ratio of Hollywood films in 2019 in brackets is as follows. Odisha and Kerala have seen cinemas opening in January 2021 but there are no collections of WONDER WOMAN 1984 as yet while Rajasthan remains shut. The circuits performing better than normal are in bold.

Mumbai - 21% (29%)
Delhi / UP - 17.5% (19%)
East Punjab - 5.75% (7%)
Rajasthan - Shut (3%)
CP Berar - 1.75% (3%)
CI - 1% (2.5%)
Nizam / Andhra - 16%  (8%)
Mysore / Karnataka - 10% (10%)
Tamil Nadu - 18% (9%)
Kerala - Shut (2.5%)
West Bengal - 7.5% (4%)
Bihar - 0.75% (1%)
Assam - 0.75% (1%)
Odisha - Shut (1%)

We are looking at bringing Sooryavanshi or '83 in the third week of March, during Holi-Shibasish Sarkar

Sooryavanshi were to originally release in 2020 summer
After waiting for 10 months, makers of Sooryavanshi and 83 eye March 2021 release; to take a call basis box-office result of Vijay's Tamil biggie, Master
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; January 7, 2021)

With the new year, come new plans. As we turned the calendar to 2021, the makers of Sooryavanshi and '83 have begun charting the way forward for the two Bollywood biggies, which have been waiting in the wings for a theatrical outing for the past 10 months. The makers are planning to release one of the event movies over the Holi weekend.

Shibasish Sarkar, chief executive officer, Reliance Entertainment group, which has bankrolled the films, says, "The situation in the country is improving as is the economy, so the mood is largely positive. A section of people headed to theatres to watch Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984. That was an encouraging sign. So, now, we are looking at bringing one of the films in the third week of March, during Holi. We have yet to decide on the film though." He is hopeful that with the vaccine roll-out around the corner, the situation will further improve. "These are event films that would have made Rs 300 crore under normal circumstances, so we can't play around with them. We need to be certain of the situation."

Come March, it will be exactly a year to the Akshay Kumar-starrer that was originally planned as a Gudi Padwa 2020 offering. "We were supposed to release Sooryavanshi on March 24, and '83 in April. If we follow the same sequence, Sooryavanshi should come first. That said, we are discussing the nitty-gritty."

Sarkar reveals that Vijay's Tamil release, Master, will serve as a precursor to help them gauge the market. Following the star's meeting with Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in December, the Tamil Nadu government permitted 100 per cent occupancy in theatres — a move that has been widely criticised by the frontline workers as well as public. On Wednesday, the Centre directed Tamil Nadu government to revoke its order, stating that it diluted the guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. "We are waiting for the January 13 release. There are four to five big releases in Tamil and Telugu cinema. There is a huge amount of confidence in the makers and the audience," reasons Sarkar.

DISASTROUS 2020 ENDS ON A HOPEFUL NOTE

There have been several years in the past which have been disappointing and where we have seen few hits and more number of flops. But 2020 stands out. Previously, the bad years would at least see some business. In this year, from March 18 to October 14, theatrical business was zero as all theatres were shut due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Even when cinemas opened gradually from October 15, the business didn’t pick up. Most producers of big and mid-sized films refused to release their films. The perception was that since the pandemic hasn’t subsided, the viewers might not turn up to cinemas in big numbers out of fear of catching the virus. Hence, very selected films have been released like Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari, Indoo Ki Jawani, Shakeela, Vinashkaal etc. These films failed to even cross the Rs. 6 crore mark individually. The problem was not with the films’ content per se. These movies had very low buzz and excitement was hardly there. Trade experts said repeatedly that we should not judge the scenario based on the box office outcomes of these films as these movies would have not worked even in normal times. However, their statement fell on deaf ears.

Thankfully, a few films managed to do well. The Hollywood flick Tenet, released on December 4, in India. It was released 3 months after it’s release elsewhere in the world. The reports were mixed and moreover, a good print was leaked on the internet. Anyway, this was a niche film as it’s very complex. Yet, there was some excitement to see it on the big screen as it’s directed by Christopher Nolan, who enjoys a fan following. It managed to collect around Rs. 11 crore which is a great figure for this film, considering these challenges.

Then, last week, the much-awaited flick Wonder Woman 1984 released extensively in original English and dubbed versions. We had predicted last week that it’ll collect Rs. 30-40 lakhs in paid previews and Rs. 90 lakhs-1 crore on Thursday. However, the film exceeded expectations as it collected Rs. 75 lakhs in previews on Wednesday and Rs. 1.50 crore on Thurday, which was Christmas eve. We had mentioned that we are unsure if it'll be able to collect as much as the first part did in its opening weekend, which was Rs. 8 crore. But this film managed to reach that mark. Today, the collections would increase a bit as it’s December 31. At this rate, Wonder Woman 1984 is all set to break Tenet’s lifetime record in just 8 days. Tomorrow is again a holiday due to January 1. Hence, the second weekend collections can also be encouraging. It now remains to be seen if Wonder Woman 1984 will be able to cross Wonder Woman’s lifetime collections of Rs. 23 crore.

What’s important to note that in North America and a few other markets, Wonder Woman 1984 had a simultaneous release in cinemas as well as on HBO Max, an online platform. Hence, a good quality HD print of the film was out since last Friday. Yet, the business of the film is quite good, probably as it’s a grand film and is best enjoyed in cinemas. It once again reaffirms that audiences are ready to come to cinemas if they feel excited for it.

However, a film that did even better than Wonder Woman 1984 is the Telugu film Solo Brathuke So Better. This romantic comedy is directed by debutant guy named Subbu and stars Sai Dharam Tej and Nabha Natesh. It was released alongside Wonder Woman 1984, on December 25, and had a very good first day, collecting a huge Rs. 3.75 crore. From the first day, the social media was filled with videos and pictures of theatres running housefull (with 50% occupancy of course). Also, it was heartening to see all the major artists of Telugu film industry coming out in support of this film and urging viewers to watch it in cinemas. In 4 days, it has managed to collect Rs. 10.25 crore and is expected to recover it’s costs in the first week itself.

Besides these, a few other films in Kannada, Tamil and Bengal industry also drew audiences. Meanwhile, the new strain of Coronavirus has not really caused havoc, as feared. The daily number of cases is at a 6-month low and is expected to further fall in the new year. The vaccine rollout will also start in a few weeks and by June, the priority 30-crore population is expected to get inoculated. Even before that happens, the cases will become negligible as herd immunity gets achieved and the winter season ends in the next 45-50 days. And thankfully, the exciting flick, Master, starring Tamil superstar Vijay, has already been scheduled to release during Pongal, on January 13. Interestingly, it’ll have a wide release in dubbed languages too. If it emerges as a huge hit, it’s bound to result in a steady flow of releases in Bollywood from February!

Zee joins the digital race with Radhe

Salman Khan in Radhe
Box Office India Trade Network

Zee Studios has made a 250 crore investment on RADHE including PA and basically it has joined the digital race as the interesting part of the deal is the digital and PVOD rights pegged at 130 crore. This is a first for Zee because Disney+ Hotstar has had films pegged at 100 crore plus while Amazon Prime has actually payed 100 crore plus for some films. We say pegged as this when one studio has all the rights and then values are pegged for the sister concerns for various rights. Here with Zee, there is distribution, digital, satellite and music.

The worldwide theatrical rights are pegged at 60 crore which means that Zee is still expecting theatrical business to be down on the expected release date which is May. This date will be kept if India remains as it is now with the pandemic but if there is another wave then it will be another story. Zee could be right about the business aspect as it will probably take longer than five months for the families to return.

The film will be a theatrical release as it stands today but its not known how the PVOD play will work. The hope is that there is a gap between theatrical and PVOD and not simultaneous. Warner Brothers did the simultaneous release with WONDER WOMAN 1984 and the results are there to be seen and its pretty much certain that piracy hit the theatrical results. Also Salman Khan has a hardcore fan base and its certain to assume this fan base will not be happy with a simultaneous PVOD release.

Also BLACK WIDOW and SATYAMEVA JAYATE 2 are scheduled to release around the same time at the moment and they could opt for Eid also. Though RADHE is a far bigger film for India than these two, a simultaneous PVOD release can level the playing field a bit. This is not because people will be subscribing for the film at home but because the film will be everywhere due to a clean HD pirated print.

The price for RADHE on digital and this time payed by Zee which were not known till now to pay big money for digital rights shows the power of mass cinema. Irrespective of what is being said about them there have been two films (LAXMII and COOLIE NO 1) which have given subscription levels a push and now Zee which is behind the likes of Disney+ Hotstar and Amazon in terms of subscribers have played their hand with RADHE. There is no doubt that RADHE will give a push but you need deep pockets to keep this going as these films do not come cheap. In terms of financial recovery for Zee for digital can only come if it is given to another platform like Amazon or others as they will pay a certain amount.

Its good for the film industry though as the digital platforms need to show subscriber growth in their fiscals and its the LAXMII's, COOLIE NO 1's and RADHE's which aid in that which means heavy prices for the bigger films. Also its not as if the subscriber growth will cover the price of a film but when everything else fails to add any numbers, then the content which does becomes huge and that end of financial year subscription growth in the books is the bottom line to OTT at present.

Coolie No 1 sets record on OTT

Coolie No 1 Review: Rehash With Sara Ali Khan, Varun Dhawan Is Anything But Numero Uno
Box Office India Trade Network

COOLIE NO 1 has set new records for Amazon Prime in India with its opening on the platform. It is the first big premiere for Prime as they have had big films before like BHARAT and WAR but these have come post a theatrical release while COOLIE NO 1 is the first big premiere.

The highest for the Amazon platform was a web series called MIRZAPUR 2 which released in 2020 but COOLIE NO 1 has surpassed this by a distance. This is expected as COOLIE NO 1 is fetching a 100 crore plus price for just its 130 odd minutes of content while the web series could be 300 or even 400 minutes of content for a fraction of the price.

This itself shows the huge difference in value of the two for the platform. So on one side you are smashing records but on the other side the competition is not much as far as the platform is concerned. If we look at it in box office terms then on one side is a film with 100 crore nett potential and the other is an also ran type.

The best comparison for COOLIE NO 1 would be against LAXMII but here its two different platforms with Disney+ Hotstar having a bigger base due to the IPL cricket. It is possible that COOLIE NO 1 may come out with a similar type of number to LAXMII as a holiday release can compensate somewhat for the lower base of the platform. It also depends on whether Amazon Prime had the same growth as Disney+ Hotstar in terms of subscription in the lockdown. LAXMII was released post the IPL and that would have pushed Disney+ Hotstar subscription to the highest level for the year.

The year has been a disaster but its ended on a slightly better note with COOLIE NO 1 scoring big on OTT and WONDER WOMAN 1984 putting up decent numbers in theatres. The numbers of Telugu film SOLO BRATHUKE SO BETTER are awaited and they are also expected to be positive.

Will Wonder Woman 1984 have a bigger opening than Tenet and Wonder Woman's 1st part?

tenet wonder woman 1984 new release dates
Box Office India Trade Network

WONDER WOMAN 1984 will open in India later today and although the film has not done wherever it has been released so far the hope is that it takes the box office in India a notch higher in these pandemic times. The film has an extended weekend though the previews starting post 5 pm today (Wednesday) will be hit by night curfew in Maharashtra which means shows have to be wrapped up by 10 pm. This will lead to only one show on most of the screens and hence will have very limited business in Maharashtra for paid previews.

The first target is to be better the numbers of TENET which has been the best performer since cinemas opened in October. The advance is better than TENET but its also a near five day holiday weekend while TENET was a normal three day weekend. Also, majority of the business is coming in advance at present and the on-the-day audience is actually less or at least that was the case when TENET releases. Hopefully the figures on Thursday for WONDER WOMAN 1984 are higher than what TENET did on day one (1.15 crore nett).

WONDER WOMAN in 2017 did 2.20 crore nett on day one in English only and though technically WONDER WOMAN 1984 should beat this number as its been dubbed and a far wider release, but the flip side is the pandemic to consider. Also there will be a pirated HD print available online from the 25th December as it releases on HBO Max in USA. Still if the on-the-day audience is in significant higher numbers than TENET, then maybe the opening day numbers of WONDER WOMAN (2017) can be challenged on Friday and that will mean an improving box office in India.

(Crisp) Movie Review: WONDER WOMAN 1984 by FENIL SETA

Wonder Woman 1984 is a great entertainer that is sure to give viewers their money’s worth. The scene of the young Diana in the beginning is thrilling to say the least. The entry of adult Diana is straight out of a Salman Khan film. In fact, the film is unabashedly commercial, unlike most of the DC Universe films. On the flipside, the ending is a bit lengthy and quite preachy. These factors dilute the impact. Speaking of performances, Gal Gadot, as expected, is stunning and suits the part to the T. That she would rock in the action avatar was expected. However, she shines in the emotional scenes as well beautifully. Chris Pine is excellent and the manner in which he comes back from the dead is well done. His aircraft scene is adorable and gives a déjà vu of a Disney film. Kristen Wiig is a real surprise. Her track is impressive and she does full justice. Pedro Pascal as the megalomaniac villain is over the top but it works big time for his role. Connie Nielsen (Hippolyta; Diana's mother) and Robin Wright (Antiope) are lovely in their cameo appearances. Hans Zimmer’s music is a bit overpowering but works big time in enhancing impact. Matthew Jensen's cinematography is breathtaking. All in all, Wonder Woman 1984 is a big-screen spectacle and deserves a watch in cinemas!

My rating - **** out of 5!

2 SMALL & BIG FILMS TO ARRIVE IN CINEMAS & OTT THIS CHRISTMAS

The beneficial Christmas weekend is here. Unlike Diwali, when a small film Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari released in cinemas, this time, things are little better. After all, Wonder Woman 1984, one of the most awaited films of the year, will be releasing. Audiences would have the choice of watching this flick and also three more. My analysis:

1. WONDER WOMAN 1984: It is the sequel of the 2017 flick Wonder Woman and stars Gal Gadot yet again in the lead role. The director, Patty Jenkins, too returns to helm the sequel. The first film was set during World War I while part 2 is based in the year 1984 at the height of the Cold War. The trailer promises loads of entertainment and big-scale action. Gal looks stunning and her casting has added a lot to the film’s brand value. She also has quite a following in India.

The first part released with minimal hype and only in English. It was released amidst 7-8 Hindi releases and a major English film (Baywatch). Yet it had emerged as the top film of all and had a lifetime of Rs. 19-20 crore. The opening day collections were Rs. 2.50 crore. Wonder Woman 1984 releases today (Wednesday December 23) with paid previews from 5:00 PM onwards. From tomorrow, it’ll have a full-day release to take advantage of Christmas Eve, when people do come out in huge numbers. It is getting a wide release, of more than 1000 screens, making it the biggest release of the season. The film is in 3D but the makers have decided to release only in 2D, fearing that some theatres might end up giving used glasses to patrons.

Sadly, it faces many challenges. Firstly, the perception is that audiences might not come in huge numbers. Secondly, the film is releasing simultaneously in cinemas and on HBO Max platform in many markets of North America and Europe. Once it’s out digitally, it’s pirated HD print would make its way on the internet. Trade fears that a chunk of moviegoers would prefer to watch the film at home illegally instead of spending money to see it in cinemas. And lastly, a major roadblock has been put in Maharashtra after the state government imposed a curfew from 11 pm to 6 am. As a result, all shows post 8:00 pm had to be cancelled. The exhibitors have been quite hurt and angry with this decision as this film had recorded very good bookings for late evening and night shows from December 23. Not to forget, the two prime markets of the film are in Maharashtra, Mumbai and Pune.

Due to these reasons, it’s difficult to say if Wonder Woman 1984 would be able to collect more than day 1 collections of part 1, which were Rs. 2.50 crore. However, it releases in Hindi and South languages as well. Also, the international reviews have been encouraging. The paid previews collections can be around Rs. 30-40 lakhs while Thursday can be around Rs. 90 lakhs-1 crore. It is from Friday December 25 that the film would collect tremendously. Wonder Woman’s first weekend was around Rs. 8 crore and maybe, the collections of the sequel might not be able to reach that mark. The target for this film would be to go beyond Tenet’s lifetime collections, which are around Rs. 11 crore. With the year-end being a time when work is slow and people want to enjoy, the weekday collections can be encouraging. In fact, Tenet’s lifetime record can be broken by Wonder Woman 1984 in the first week itself.

2. SHAKEELA: It stars Richa Chadha as Southern star of the 80s and 90s, Shakeela. Directed by Indrajit Lankesh, it also stars Pankaj Tripathi. It seems to be in The Dirty Picture zone. But hype and awareness are almost zero. And moreover, it’s a theatrical release, from December 25. A film with some excitement like Indoo Ki Jawani opened at Rs. 20 lakhs. This flick might open at less than Rs. 10 lakhs sadly.

3. COOLIE NO 1: It is the remake of the much-loved 1995 film of the same name. Just like the original, it’s also directed by David Dhawan. Starring Varun Dhawan, Sara Ali Khan, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Jaaved Jaaferi and Johny Lever, it looks like a big-screen entertainer. Sadly, the film is releasing on Amazon Prime, on December 25. The fear is that just like Laxmii, this film too would get ridiculed. After all, it’s the elite audiences who subscribe to these channels and they despise such masala films. A real idea of the film’s verdict would be out when this film would be aired on television.

4. AK VS AK: It is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and stars Anil Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap. Interestingly, both play themselves, but exaggerated versions of it. The film shows that Anurag Kashyap kidnaps Anil Kapoor’s daughter Sonam and compels Anil to find her, while filming the whole experience in real time. The trailer is crazy and it’s sure to get viewership, especially among the elite who would love to watch such experimental content. It releases on December 24 on Netflix, which is the day Anil Kapoor celebrates his birthday.

Wonder Woman 1984 underperforms in China

Gal Gadot On Wonder Woman 1984: 'Hardest Movie' I've Ever Shot
Box Office India Trade Network

WONDER WOMAN 1984 has not opened as expected in the International markets. It was not expected to match up to previous instalment due to the Coronavirus pandemic and so comparisons are pointless but the figures are below industry expectations. The business was going to be driven by China as most of the major circuits in Europe are shut or almost shut but the performance in China is not too good.

The film grossed around $6.5 million in China and it was not the leading film since a local film THE RESCUE headed the charts. Maybe WONDER WOMAN 1984 can turn the tables in the days to come. In Japan, it was not even among the top three films and it was the holdovers that were ahead of it.

The best case scenario is looking around $25 million in China and 60-65% of the international business will be coming from China over the first weekend. This means a $50 million weekend is looking out of reach. The film will see a release on HBO Max in USA next week due to which a HD pirated print will be available and that might have affected the box office takings in someway. Even if just 10% of the audience who wants to watch the film waits a few days for a pirated version, it does affect box office collections.

The film will open in India next week and exhibitors will be hoping for some sort of decent response with expectations of better numbers than TENET. But at present its best not to have expectations as no one really knows how it will play out.

Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman 1984 all set to arrive to save the world, and theatres

Gal Gadot reprises her role of Amazonian warrior Diana in the film
Unlike its dual release in the US, Europe, Wonder Woman 1984 poised for a big-screen run in India; exhibitors pin hopes on film for the revival of business

In a recent interview, director Patty Jenkins said that a year ago, she would have "flipped out" had someone told her that her labour of love, Wonder Woman 1984, would have a direct-to-web release. However, she has now thrown her might behind the idea as the Gal Gadot-fronted superhero movie gears up for a simultaneous release in theatres and on HBO Max in the US and Europe. The December 25 offering comes as a ray of hope in the Indian market as it is poised only for a theatrical run.

Exhibitor Akshaye Rathi says the film may give a boost to the business that hasn't witnessed a tentpole movie post the pandemic. "Not all screens are equipped to play such Hollywood films. The studio has allowed its release only in DCI-compliant [Digital Cinema Initiatives] projections. That said, Wonder Woman 1984 will open in almost 1,000 screens. This can be the big-screen spectacle that will draw the audience," says Rathi.

G7 multiplex, the popular theatre in Bandra, was known to maintain a studied distance from Hollywood outings, instead revelling in its Hindi counterparts. But now, Manoj Desai, executive director, G7, has pinned his hopes on the superhero movie. "We don't have too many options, so we are releasing Wonder Woman. We hope it does wonders at the box office. So far, we have only seen 15 to 20 per cent occupancy." Rajender Singh Jyala, chief programming officer, INOX Leisure, chimes in, "We are assigning maximum screens to the movie."

Warner Bros' recent decision to release its 2021 line-up of movies simultaneously on HBO Max has sparked off a debate in the US, with Christopher Nolan being one of its most vociferous critics. Ask trade analyst Taran Adarsh if the model may soon be adopted in India, and he explains, "I don't think the model will work here. The exhibition sector is already bleeding. A dual release will be a nail in the coffin."

He adds that the Chris Pine and Kristen Wiig starrer is coming at a crucial juncture for cinema owners in India. "Despite Kiara's [Advani] presence, Indoo Ki Jawani didn't make too much noise at ticket counters. Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari sank at the box office. Now, everybody is hoping that it will be a good Christmas for the industry."

Logjam at the box office in 2021?

Even as a number of Hindi as well as Hollywood biggies shift to 2021 due to the pandemic, experts feel it will only ensure ‘a steady and robust flow’ of quality films
Prashant Singh (HINDUSTAN TIMES; December 9, 2020)

It’s a given that 2020 has been nothing less than disastrous for movie exhibition business. But now that the year is nearing it’s end, 2021 may see a box- office logjam of sorts as all the films — Bollywood, Hollywood and others — that have moved to next year, besides the ones that were anyway set for a 2021 outing, will have back-to-back dates with the big screen.

From Bollywood, titles such as Sooryavanshi, '83, Maidaan, Jersey, Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai and Laal Singh Chaddha among others have moved to 2021. Plus, a number of films such as Mumbai Saga, Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Brahmastra, Bunty Aur Babli 2, Prithviraj, Shamshera and Bellbottom are either complete or nearing completion.

Experts, on their part, feel a “steady flow” will help the entire ecosystem. “The year 2021 will be a very exciting year as a number of big films will finally hit theatres, which, in turn, will contribute in bringing back people to theatres and, help theatres finally earn some revenue,” says trade analyst Taran Adarsh, adding that the “big films are the need of the hour” for theatres.

Not just Bollywood movies, a number of topline Hollywood biggies such as West Side Story, Mission: Impossible 7, The Suicide Squad, Top Gun: Maverick, Fast & Furious 9, Black Widow, A Quiet Place Part II, No Time To Die, Morbius and The French Dispatch among others also made their way towards 2021. “After a remarkably bad 2020, a steady and robust flow of quality movies next year can really help bring a lot of things back on track, which is the need of the hour for the entire exhibition sector,” says exhibitor-distribitor Akshaye Rathi.

But what about the logjam at the box office? “In a way, it will be a good problem to have after a disastrous 2020. So, exhibitors and distributors may not complain with the sheer variety,” says filmmaker Anees Bazmee, adding: “But I hope that the release windows can be worked out in a way that no one faces any loss.”

Industry experts are confident that release windows can be spaced out and “makers will do that”.

Adarsh says: “I am sure everyone will space out their releases instead of stepping onto each other’s shoes. Be it screens, footfalls or box-office, they can be divided for everyone’s benefit.”

For Rathi, spacing out a film’s release is directly proportional to a film’s revenue share. “I only hope that all the tentpole films space out their release dates by at least a week because we wouldn’t want a situation wherein two or three of them are out on a day, resulting in business getting divided,” he says.

No Christmas cheer at BO?
While Christopher Nolan’s Tenet has brought in some cheer to Indian box-office with opening weekend collections of ₹4.25 crore (it’s expected to make ₹10-12 crore in India), exhibitors -distribitors are surprised that no premium Hindi film has gone for the lucrative Christmas weekend. As of now, only Wonder Woman 1984 and Shakeela are slated for December 25 release. “Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s production, Tuesdays And Fridays may come out on Christmas,” says a source.

Christopher Nolan brings back the audience with Tenet, wonders expected from Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman 1984

Makers of Sooryavanshi and ’83 should fix release dates by first week of Jan
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 8, 2020)

After eight months of no show, Diljit Dosanjh, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Manoj Bajpayee’s quirky romcom, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari, finally arrived in the theatres during the Diwali weekend. Even though the collections were below par, exhibitors lauded the makers for being the first to brave a theatrical release in India in the midst of an ongoing pandemic.

Three weeks later, on December 4, Christopher Nolan’s long-awaited espionage thriller, Tenet, featuring our own Dimple Kapadia, finally opened in 750 screens across the country, primarily in multiplexes. The Indian release was delayed by over three months because theaters here were shut. The film recorded encouraging footfalls over the weekend despite a delayed release and the resulting piracy, along with the fact that the rogue virus has restricted occupancy to 50 per cent. P V Sunil of the Carnival chain of cinemas, is delighted with the box office response. “The IMAX screen in Wadala recorded 65 per cent occupancy through the weekend; that’s a positive sign,” he exults.

Trade analyst Komal Nahta points out that Nolan films can be quite confounding in their plots and consequently target the high-end audience in big cities. Tenet is successfully tapping this niche market. “It is doing well in premium multiplexes and IMAX screens. It didn’t make an impression in small centers and single screens, and that was expected,” he reasons.

He predicts that the next Hollywood biggie, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 1984, which is releasing in India during the Christmas weekend, will collect at least four times more than Tenet. “It’s a commercial superhero film, which has a big market in India,” he asserts.

However, he believes that we are still at least 45 days away from a big Hindi film release. “India is the primary market for Bollywood while for the West, it’s just a secondary one. Hopefully, Hindi cinema will be back on big screen by January-end,” he says.

Shibasish Sarkar of Reliance Entertainment, who has two big ticket films lined up for release, the Akshay Kumar-fronted Sooryavanshi and Ranveer Singh’s sports drama ’83, is ebullient after seeing housefull shows of Tenet in certain pockets of Mumbai. “If the most premium audience has come out to see a film which is three months old and got mixed reviews, I’m sure collections will increase every week. Wonder Woman whose buzz is huge and positive, will get more bullish numbers, and that’s a positive sign. Even if Wonder Woman 1984 does the business of the last film from the franchise, it would be an achievement”.

Prod him on the status of Rohit Shetty’s cop thriller and Kabir Khan’s World Cup movie and he assures that both films will get big screen releases and not open on OTT platforms. “We will sit with our directors after the release of Wonder Woman and hopefully by the first week of January, we will have a date in place. Both films should release between January and March,” he signs off.

Fenil's Bollywood Talk # 650

TENET RECORDS EXCELLENT ADVANCE!

Since last couple of weeks, we have been stressing in our Bollywood Talks that exciting films should start releasing in cinemas, notwithstanding the Coronavirus pandemic. Although the virus has not gone anywhere, the curve has been flattening here in India. A second wave was feared post Diwali. It’s almost 20 days since the Festival of Lights and yet, the cases have been decreasing. Since November 22, the daily number of cases hasn’t breached the 45,000 mark. All this shows that the situation has been improving.

Yet, the Bollywood industry has been reluctant in releasing the film as the filmmakers fear that audiences might not come. The other unfounded fear is that a second lockdown might happen which also seems unlikely as it’ll lead to major economic repercussions and plus, as mentioned above, it won’t be needed when cases are reducing. The industry failed to see that audiences are bored and are hence heading to Juhu Beach, Marine Drive etc in Mumbai and also other places for leisure. Also, restaurants and pubs are getting great footfalls. These places are a little riskier as one has to remove the mask to consume food and drinks. Cinemas are safer as all precautions are strictly in place and moreover, one has to compulsorily wear the mask.

Yet, the industry remained adamant. It has scheduled small films like Indoo Ki Jawani and Shakeela for release. A film like Shakeela, in fact, is shockingly releasing on the lucrative Christmas weekend. These films look interesting but won’t attract audiences in hordes. And when these films will flop, the industry will feel vindicated and shout from the rooftops how they have been right all along that audiences are scared to visit theatres!

These silly excuses of the industry are all set to run out of steam this weekend. Tenet, the much awaited Hollywood film of Christopher Nolan, is releasing tomorrow. It is not a mainstream masala flick like Avengers or Fast & Furious series. It was released way back in August-end and September in the rest of the world and the reviews have been mixed. Yet, the audiences here are eager to see it, that too, on the big screen due to Nolan and its unique concept. The advance booking of the film started on Saturday and Sunday and believe it or not, by Monday, a lot of shows got sold out! The IMAX shows especially got full first as these are limited across the country. But even the non-IMAX shows began to get excellent bookings.

The trade was left stunned as 25,000 tickets got sold for Tenet over the weekend, that is, 5 days before release! In today’s times, when occupancy generally increases just hours before the show, this is a feat. Another shocker is that 2020’s biggest hit, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, had sold just 20,000 tickets, in advance, for its first weekend! In fact, a box office website also claimed that if Tenet had sold 25,000 tickets a day before release, even that would have been very good. But here, it managed to do so days before it’s release. And this speaks volumes how people are ready to come to cinemas in large numbers if the film is exciting enough! Is Bollywood listening?

Last year, Warner Bros released Joker which collected Rs. 5.25 crore on Day 1. This was because it was released on Gandhi Jayanti holiday. However, it collected despite clashing with War and Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy. Despite maximum 50% occupancy, Tenet (also produced by Warner Bros) can collect close to Joker’s collections. Even if the collections are in the Rs. 3.50-4.50 crore range for day 1, it’ll be praiseworthy. A weekend in the Rs. 11-13 crore range will be more than enough, considering the challenges and the perception that no one will come to cinemas!

The exhibitors who have been struggling to get patrons can now finally heave a sigh of relief. They are excitedly wondering that if a film like Tenet can manage such advance sales, then how much would Wonder Woman 1984 manage, which releases on Christmas, and has far more appeal than the Nolan-directorial? Here’s hoping the Bollywood industry finally wakes up, sheds his fear and announces a big or mid-sized for Christmas or New Year at least.

Exhibitors pin hopes on Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman 1984 to revive business

Her Wonder Woman film to open in theatres and have a digital premiere simultaneously on Dec 25; could reach India a week earlier
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 20, 2020)

On Thursday, actress Gal Gadot informed that her long-awaited superhero film, Wonder Woman 1984, will release in theatres in the USA on Dec 25 and simultaneously on the digital streaming platform HBO Max. It’s the first film in recent times to opt for a hybrid release and the experiment could pave way for a new normal in post-Covid times.

A month ago, the makers of Ishaan Khatter and Ananya Panday’s Khaali Peeli had proposed the same, but the Multiplex Association of India didn’t agree. They also refused to play Akshay Kumar’s Laxmii, Anurag Basu’s crime anthology Ludo and Hansal Mehta’s Chhalaang which premiered on streaming platforms. So, will they screen Wonder Woman 1984? “If it is pay-per-view in India too, then, technically, the multiplex association should not screen it as they have been adamant about not releasing Indian films that open on the digital platform. But they may have to step down from their high horse soon as this could be the norm for next three to six months owing to the ongoing pandemic,” points out trade analyst Komal Nahta.

Meanwhile, sources confirm that the Hollywood fantasy adventure will have a theatrical release in India since HBO Max is at least a year away from a launch here. The digital premiere of Wonder Woman 1984 is currently restricted to only those countries that have access to HBO Max. So, after a dry spell of over eight months, exhibition sector finally has reason to rejoice. “Wonder Woman is a huge franchise and will work well in India. While big Bollywood producers are shying away from releasing their films in the theatres fearing low footfalls, Hollywood studios are coming to the rescue of beleaguered cinema hall owners,” adds Komal.

Vishek Chauhan, a Bihar exhibitor, reasons that it’s a well-informed decision as 45 per cent of theatres are open in the US but other key markets are inactive. “In such a situation, it’s fine to release a film in theatres and move to Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) within nine days. The audience comes to cinema halls for big screen experience and won’t go away. We have to move forward and devise ways to co-exist. As an exhibitor, I am okay with the reduced gap between a theatrical and OTT release. The rigidity of certain forces in the exhibition sector can destroy the non-national chains and single screen cinemas who are more flexible. Reviving trade should be the goal, not scoring over each other,” he asserts, adding that they have been told that Wonder Woman 1984 might arrive in India a week early, on December 18.

MEANWHILE... MORE DECEMBER THRILLS

Buzz is, apart from Wonder Woman, Hindi film, Bunty Aur Babli 2, too, might open in India during the Christmas weekend. A call will be taken before the month ends.

Another Hollywood film, Tenet, is gearing up for a December 4 opening in India. Mirror had earlier (Nov 7) reported about the possibility of it releasing on Nov 20 or 27. “It took time to formalise the terms and condition of release,” shared a source. Christopher Nolan’s espionage thriller will stream digitally across the globe from Dec 15.

Will re-release of films work for theatres?

Cinema halls are gearing to reopen when restrictions ease, but they’re likely to use old hits to draw audiences
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 11, 2020)

With life crawling back to normal mid the Coronavirus crisis, and resumption of shoots, comes the big question: when will movie theatres reopen? And an even bigger question: which filmmakers will be ready to test the waters and see whether audiences trickle in?

UAE, with no new films in hand, has decided to re-release Good Newwz and Dream Girl, both 2019 films, in theatres. Back home too, experts believe the same strategy would be employed.

OLD MAY STRIKE GOLD
Manoj Desai, executive director of G7 Multiplex and Maratha Mandir cinema, Mumbai says, “A theatre lockdown happened in 1996. On reopening I decided to re-run the 1961 Shammi Kapoor film Junglee. It was housefull. Then I re-released Teesri Manzil, also housefull. Just after the Covid-19 lockdown started, I had thought I’ll again use this idea.”

Earlier, speculation was rife that Sooryavanshi and '83 would be the first to release to draw audiences. But '83 director Kabir Khan told us recently, “It’s not like the lockdown will lift and we will throw our films to test waters. We will wait till comfortable.”

Shibasish Sarkar, group CEO, Reliance Entertainment which is involved with both these films, says, “We are expecting theatres to reopen in mid to end of July. Also, it will be in some states. It’s not as if suddenly some ready films would be released, it will take time. Hollywood films will come first — Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, Mulan, then Wonder Woman 1984. I expect old films to be released again, but I don’t expect people to come to the hall for them. It would be a kind of practice for theatres to get everything ready.”

He confirms both their films won’t be among the first to release, but adds Reliance would give any of their titles such as Simmba (2018), Golmaal Again (2017), Super 30 (2019) for free to theatre owners. “We survive because theatres are there,” he adds.

THE OTT FACTOR
However, recent films such as Angrezi Medium or Baaghi 3 are already on OTT, why would people pay to watch them in theatres? Hardik Mehta, whose Roohi Afzana starring Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao is stuck, says, “It’s an important step forward. Let’s run cinema halls for 24 hours, but only at 50% capacity. Also, Nolan will release Tenet in July, even those at home will say ‘I’ll have to go to a theatre’,” he says.
