The Chinese film DETECTIVE CHINATOWN 3 is heading for a world record
opening as it looks to smash all opening day box office records seen in
any country. The record till date stands as the $157 million of AVENGERS: ENDGAME in North America and DETECTIVE CHINATOWN 3 had already
collected $100m in advance for day one.
The figures at 1 pm China time stand at around $131 million and that $157
million figure looks a sitting duck for the film. It is way ahead of
the recent big opening days seen in China which are around the $60m
mark. AVENGERS: ENDGAME opened at $66 million, CRAZY ALLEN opened at $64 million and
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is $60 million. DETECTIVE CHINATOWN 3 has already more than doubled
these opening days and there is more to come.
The numbers are just phenomenal and if things go well, DETECTIVE CHINATOWN 3 will maybe have a $400 million plus weekend which has never been seen before anywhere in the world. AVENGERS: ENDGAME grossed around $357 million over its first weekend.
There is hardly any interest in India as to what a Chinese film is doing
in China but these numbers are of huge importance to Hollywood as we
see simultaneous theatrical and PVOD releases for major films. The way
the Chinese market is going it to be the biggest market in the world and
as seen with WONDER WOMAN 1984, these PVOD releases make a dent in China
and you just cant afford to do that with the tent-pole Hollywood films as
the revenue is just too big.
