Gal Gadot On Wonder Woman 1984: 'Hardest Movie' I've Ever Shot
Box Office India Trade Network

WONDER WOMAN 1984 has not opened as expected in the International markets. It was not expected to match up to previous instalment due to the Coronavirus pandemic and so comparisons are pointless but the figures are below industry expectations. The business was going to be driven by China as most of the major circuits in Europe are shut or almost shut but the performance in China is not too good.

The film grossed around $6.5 million in China and it was not the leading film since a local film THE RESCUE headed the charts. Maybe WONDER WOMAN 1984 can turn the tables in the days to come. In Japan, it was not even among the top three films and it was the holdovers that were ahead of it.

The best case scenario is looking around $25 million in China and 60-65% of the international business will be coming from China over the first weekend. This means a $50 million weekend is looking out of reach. The film will see a release on HBO Max in USA next week due to which a HD pirated print will be available and that might have affected the box office takings in someway. Even if just 10% of the audience who wants to watch the film waits a few days for a pirated version, it does affect box office collections.

The film will open in India next week and exhibitors will be hoping for some sort of decent response with expectations of better numbers than TENET. But at present its best not to have expectations as no one really knows how it will play out.
