Majority of actors are busy building their image rather than working on their craft-Barun Sobti

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 18, 2021)
With two web projects, Asur and Halahal, last year, Barun Sobti was noticed by “the mainstream industry”, but his transition to films wasn’t smooth. After gaining popularity with TV show Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? in 2011, his Main Aur Mr. Riight (2014), Tu Hai Mera Sunday (2017) and 22 Yards (2019) were stuck for the longest time.
Talking about his experience, Sobti says, “I won’t say I am a victim of the industry… Here, you have to dig your well every day. In fact, today I have a lot of work but it is still not easy... just that today my set of problems are different.”
His chocolate boy image got a total makeover with his web roles last year. “Image matters a lot, and majority of actors are busy building their image rather than working on their craft… these are sensible people, who know how the industry functions. And, at the same time, there [are those who] see potential in an actor beyond their looks or their image. That’s how I was cast in Asur and Halahal,” he explains.
Sobti, 36, admits there was a lot of resistance while casting him in Asur and Halahal, but producers Tanveer Bookwala and Zeishan Quadri were sure about him. “Their confidence gave me confidence… I am thankful to them that they pushed for me. They are visionaries,” he says.
Only a sick mind can think of anything sexual in that scene, says Rasbhari creator Tanveer Bookwala

Rasbhari creator defends Swara-fronted show as CBFC chief Joshi questions its 'irresponsible content' and netizens slam it
Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; June 29, 2020)
Swara Bhasker-starrer Rasbhari has become the subject of a social media trial ever since it dropped online on June 25. The Amazon Prime Video series, which has Bhasker play a teacher whose teenage student becomes obsessed with her, has been termed "soft porn" by a section of netizens. Things reached a crescendo when Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief Prasoon Joshi took to social media to express his displeasure. "Saddened by web series Rasbhari's irresponsible content portraying a little girl child dancing provocatively in front of men drinking," he wrote.Creator-producer Tanveer Bookwala states that Rasbhari was designed to depict the issues that women face in a patriarchal society. "Prasoon Joshi is an intelligent man. I am shocked that he is seeing the scene [in such a light]. Don't all Indian parents ask their kids to showcase their dance and singing skills when guests are at home? Only a sick mind can think of anything sexual in it. I would want to ask him what was so sexual in the scene," states Bookwala. Over the weekend, the leading lady responded to Joshi's statement on Twitter, stating that he may have misunderstood the sequence.
The producer is dismayed that the show is being called out for having an exploitative gaze, the very trait it hoped to subvert. "The idea behind the series was to show the hypocrisy of our culture and the problems women face. It is about giving respect and dignity to women. They are seeing the series in a different light, entirely opposite of what was intended," he rues.Bookwala believes that Bhasker, who is known to speak out against the establishment, is being singled out. "We chose her because she was apt for the role. You cannot vilify a person like this. Trolls are making sure that our IMDb ratings drop. This reeks of a game plan to attack the actor and the show."
mid-day reached out to Joshi, who remained unavailable for comment.

Swara Bhasker-starrer becomes the first Indian series to be officially selected for the Series Mania International Festival
MUMBAI MIRROR (February 27, 2019)
Nurturing talent across the world, the ‘Series Mania International Festival’ brings together the who’s who of the content industry from across the world to celebrate their talent. Applause Entertainment’s coming-of-age series, Rasbhari will be making a mark at this prestigious festival, as it becomes the first ever Indian series to be selected for the Short Forms Competition at the festival in France.
Series Mania International Festival, held at Lille in France, draws the most renowned names of the global series universe together on one common platform. Right from its inception in 2010, they have been instrumental in recognising and curating the best series in the world. Through this nine-day dynamic event, Series Mania brings the most renowned creators, screenwriters, directors and talents of yesterday, today and tomorrow’s serial universe under one roof. Rasbhari has broken ground with its newfangled narrative, impactful dialogues and eloquent cinematography. It has been selected alongside premium iconic shows for the Short Forms Competition like Break Up (France), Drive (Singapore), Fourchette (Canada), Germain s’éteint (Canada), Hell Is Other People (Denmark), M (Argentina), People Talking (Spain), State of the Union (United Kingdom) and ZéroStérone (France). Audiences present at this festival will also get to witness the world premiere of two episodes of Rasbhari.
Produced and co-created for Applause Entertainment by Tanveer Bookwala and directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhatt (Saluun and Brij Mohan Amar Rahe), Rasbhari is a coming-of-age love story, set in the Hindi heartland of small-town Meerut. The writer of the runaway hit film Badhaai Ho, Shantanu Shrivastava’s stirring words, delectable turn of phrase, delightful local dialect and wicked sense of humour, coupled with Nikhil’s deft direction makes every character in this show come alive. Headlining a terrific cast of actors, the critically-acclaimed actor, Swara Bhasker, noted for her roles in Tanu weds Manu and Raanjhanaa, and her blazing success in Veere Di Wedding will play the enigmatic character of Shanu Madam, who is the object of attraction not only for the young hero, Nand (Ayushmaan Saxena), but also the entire male population of Meerut.
Swara’s co-star Ayushmaan Saxena, who rose to fame through Bombay Talkies and won hearts with his stint on Dance India Dance Season 4, brings to life Nand’s character, a 16-year-old boy who gets infatuated with his new English teacher. This story explores Nand’s rite of passage to adulthood with a strong dose of social satire, ridiculing these men and their inveterate sexism. The show also features Rashmi Agdekar, Pradyuman Singh, Neelu Kohli and Chitranjan Tripathi in pivotal roles. The title music has been composed by Chirantan Bhatt.
“We are delighted to represent India at the esteemed Series Mania International Festival, France. Good content has global resonance, and our selection in the much sought-after Series Mania Competition is a strong validation of this. Working in close collaboration with Team Applause, Tanveer, Shantanu and Nikhil have created a sparkling gem of storytelling, which is now finding an audience across borders and continents. We are excited to showcase this labour of love at the festival and are looking forward to stream it soon for viewers all over the world,” says Sameer Nair, CEO Applause Entertainment.
Tanveer Bookwala, Founder and Creative Director of Ding Entertainment, added, “Rasbhari (translated as ‘juicy’) is many parts sexy and all parts social satire. We have created a delightfully quirky and heart-warming tale, set in the landscape of exotic small town India that we hope it will appeal to prudes and poets alike.”
Swara Bhasker adds, “The artiste in me was thrilled to be a part of a unique narrative like Rasbhari and I am now beyond thrilled to know that our series has been selected for the prestigious Series Mania International Festival! Thank you, Tanveer and Ding for pulling this together, Shantanu for the writing, Nikhil for bringing it to life, my wonderful co-stars, especially Ayushmaan Saxena, and Applause Entertainment for their bold belief in us.”
Rasbhari will be streaming soon on a digital platform for the audience to watch and relish.

Swara Bhasker follows glamorous Veere Di Wedding act with that of a small-town teacher in web show, Rasbhari
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; June 7, 2018)
In stark contrast to the glamorous, rich, spoilt brat she plays in Veere Di Wedding, Swara Bhasker's next sees her slip into the role of a school teacher from a small town of Uttar Pradesh. Applause Entertainment's Rasbhari, a coming-of-age love story, marks her second venture in the digital space after 2016's acclaimed It's Not That Simple.
Bhasker's Shanoo, an English teacher at a Meerut school has caught the attention of a class 11 student, Nand. "It's a role that is rarely explored on screen. I hope it shines a light on today's society," says Swara Bhasker, who stars alongside Ayushmaan Saxena.
The off-beat character that she is set to play was certainly instrumental in getting her nod for a web show. "I am always looking out for roles that challenge me and satisfy my pursuit for creativity. Such experimental initiatives are aiming to bring never-seen-before content to the Indian audience. I'm extremely happy to be part of it."
The Nikhil Bhat-directed 10-episode series promises to capture the local culture and aesthetic of the town. "When the character of Shanoo was narrated to me, I knew Swara would be an ideal fit for it. Today's discerning Indian audiences demand content that is gripping and entertaining; we need to meet their expectations," Bhat says. While penning the script, Shantanu Shrivastava was certain that the plot should "unfold like an onion". He says, "We we're combining two genres in the series. We wanted the story to evolve as the audiences learn more about Shanoo's character. At the core, we wanted it to be helmed by a strong narrative."

One of XXX’s short stories is a conversation between the male and female sexual organs?

Upala KBR (DNA; August 6, 2015)
Ekta Kapoor’s XXX is giving nothing away, save for the fact that Ken Ghosh will be directing several newcomers in the film. The title by itself is giving rise to much speculation. Most feel it’s an erotic thriller, replete with sex and nudity. We’ve found out that the film is segmented into a series of short stories. One of these stories has a penis talking to a vagina.
Chhoti Kahaniyaan
A source reveals, “XXX centers around five short stories revolving around very strong women characters. The film begins with two people telling each other stories. Each story, while under the guise of erotica, tell a tale that comprises a message. The genre of each story is different — from edgy, to thriller, quirky, romantic and even comic. While people are assuming that XXX revolves around erotica and sex, the fact is sex is just a part of each story and moves it forward.”
Kya bolti tu!
About the ‘private’ conversations tale, the source says, “The story about a conversation between a male and female sexual organ, is very quirky in its take.” Adds the source, “There are no double-meaning dialogues in the film, nor is it a sex comedy. It’s a new-age, one-of-its-kind film, something neither Ekta nor Ken haven’t attempted before. The stories have been written by Ken, Tanveer Bookwala (Chief Creative Officer at Balaji Motion Pictures) and writer-actor Mayank Tiwari, who also plays a character in XXX.”
Music matters
The film is complete except for a couple of songs and post production. “In the music department too, Ken and Ekta wanted to be different. Ken apparently listened to 100 songs before finalising four, all composed by new music directors and sung by new-age singers. The music is said to be outstanding as all four are party songs. The uniqueness of the songs are that despite being party songs, none of them have the words daaru or mention of any type of alcohol in the lyrics!”
Nimrat Kaur opts out of Azhar?

Though she refutes signing on the dotted line, the Lunchbox actress is no longer a part of Ekta Kapoor’s Azharuddin biopic starring Emraan Hashmi
Sneha Mahadevan and Nayandeep Rakshit (DNA; June 16, 2015)
Even before the film takes off, the Mohammad
Azharuddin boipic has been plagued with issues. First the makers
couldn’t find an actress who could play Azhar’s ex-wife Sangeeta Bijlani
and now their troubles have doubled as Nimrat Kaur, who was signed to
play the lawyer’s role has opted out of the project. The actress, we
hear wasn’t too happy with the script, especially her role and decided
to convey that to the makers. The film has apparently been thrown
off-gear as they don’t have a replacement as yet.
Though Nimrat maintains that she hadn’t signed on the dotted line, our sources reveal that she was indeed a part of the project. She says, “Yes I was approached to do Azhar but I had never signed the film. It was one of those films I was considering. How can I walkout of a film I haven’t even signed? Beyond that, I won’t be able to tell anything else.” Tanveer Bookwala, CCO, Balaji Motion Pictures has a similar story to say, “The film starts shooting in July as planned, opening with the London schedule. Nimrat was one of the names being considered for a pivotal role in the movie but we’re going ahead with someone else.” He also adds that though she isn’t a part of this project, they plan to work with her in the future. “We are considering Nimrat for another movie, but that’s not until next year.”
After Dilwale, Varun Dhawan-Kriti Sanon to team up for Half Girlfriend?

Nayandeep Rakshit (DNA; May 6, 2015)
B-Town is abuzz with rumours that Varun Dhawan will team up with his Dilwale co-star Kriti Sanon for Ekta Kapoor’s film based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel Half Girlfriend. A source confirms the development, “Ekta has made up her mind to cast Varun in the film.”
About Sanon’s selection, our source says, “Ekta feels that Kriti is one of the most promising newcomers around and fits the character well. And while it was reported that Alia Bhatt was approached for the role, that speculation died after she began dating Sidharth Malhotra. ”
Kriti’s inclusion in the film is being kept hush-hush. “Neither Varun nor Ekta are willing to talk about it at the moment. Ekta has a flurry of films which she wants to finish before moving ahead with this film and Varun has been sworn to secrecy.”
Tanveer Bookwala, CCO, Balaji Motion Pictures, says. “The film is only halfway done and will take three more months to complete. As of now, we have not approached any stars.”
When asked if they were considering Varun, he added, “Varun and Balaji have delivered a successful film in the past. So when we make films, we do think of him. But we will only cast someone who we think will fit the role perfectly.”
He confirmed that the film would go on floors next year. “For now, our slate is full.”

Sneha Mahadevan (DNA; March 20, 2015)
After announcing the joint production — Udta Punjab —
Anurag Kashyap’s Phantom Films and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures
are now coming together for another film. The two filmmakers have been
wanting to work for a long time and sooner than later, Anurag might be
directing a film to be produced by Balaji.
Our source reveals, “Ekta has always loved the projects that Phantom Films associates itself with, and the two have been looking for the right script to work together. Though they haven’t yet decided on the script, Anurag has been signed on by Ekta for a film. It will be the perfect combination of art meets commercial. After Udta Punjab, the duo will be sitting together to finalise on a few scripts that they have shortlisted.”
Confirming the same, Tanveer Bookwala, CCO, Balaji Motion Pictures said, “Anurag was signed a long time back. We are looking for the right material, as we speak. The minute we find something, we will announce it.”
A sex worker will sound like a professor now?-Ashoke Pandit on CBFC guidelines

The CBFC's attempt to purge 'objectionable' words from films has been condemned by the fraternity.
Roshmilla Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 14, 2015)
"Kutte kaminey main tera khoon pee jaoonga..." This line, synonymous with
Hindi cinema, is no longer acceptable to the Central Board of Film
Certification. Kutta, along with saali, haraami, bastard and bitch, has
been banished by the Board.
The CBFC has come up with a list of words in English and Hindi, which are deemed "offensive/objectionable". Regional Officers have been directed to delete them from Hindi and regional films, irrespective of the certification. Also, words like maarna, lena, bajana, if related to sex, will be scissored out, along with the word Bombay. There will also be no glorification of bloodshed, violence against women and double meaning dialogue.
This new commandment, dispatched to all producers' associations and censor notice boards, has sent shockwaves through the industry. Director Navdeep Singh who was willing to take an 'A' rating for his upcoming film, NH10, which showcases a woman's gory revenge, was unavailable for a comment. He was reportedly brainstorming with the makers to find a way out because going by the trailer, the film is peppered with expletives and violence against women.
It was "no comments" from Balaji's CCO, Tanveer Bookwala, too on how this diktat would affect their under-production sex comedy Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 and the soon-to-roll erotic thriller XXX. But Madhur Bhandarkar admitted that if the guidelines are implemented, his Calendar Girls will have to mind their language and he'll have to edit out the F and B words. "My 2011 film, Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji, was given an 'A' certificate because of the use of the word virginity. That restricted it's reach and cut into the revenue," recalls Madhur, adding that the rule will make characters boringly one-dimensional and stories devoid of drama. "Language is one way of showing the contrast between a bad and a good guy and his transformation if it happens. It's also a reflection of our society."
Mahesh Bhatt rues that we are living in oppressive times and members of the film fraternity, who once fought this battle along with them, have now become the thought police. "The CBFC is free to do what it wishes, but there is no lock, no gate, no bolt that it can set upon the freedom of our minds. This is a battle which they will never win because this is India, not China or Saudi Arabia," he thunders. Ask him if he anticipates any trouble with his love triangle, Hamari Adhuri Kahani, and he quips, "No, HAK is a heart moving tale of illicit love."
Daughter Pooja Bhatt who is producing Cabaret and Love Affair, says she has her my own censor board in my head. Double meaning dialogues were never her 'scene' and she can never look at the female form in a vulgar manner. "The biggest criticism against Jism 2 was that it did not have enough sex and humanised a porn star, projecting her as a person and not a plaything," she says.
The diktat is bound to affect upcoming Sunny Leone films. While, Pritish Nandy, the producer of Mastizaade, being directed by Milap Zaveri who wrote Masti and Grand Masti, refused to comment on the subject of double meaning dialogue, Bhushan Kumar, the producer of Ek Paheli Leela, insists that while his musical love story has erotic scenes, it doesn't have any objectionable words or violence against women. "If the law is passed, as a citizen of the country, I will have to abide by it too," he adds.
Pooja doesn't agree. "We must have the audacity to go to the Revising Committee or even the Supreme Court. Most people don't have the grit to take on the system but I do," she insists.
Meanwhile, Hansal Mehta who is filming Aligarh, about a homosexual professor, caught on spy camera having consensual sex with a rickshawallah, has tweeted, "Dear Indian government, if you decide what I should make and what my characters can say, then, why don't you also fund my films?" He added, "Dear Censor Board, go screw yourself." Richa Chadda endorsed his views in a 2013 video, Shit Indian Censors Say, which has now gone viral. And Ashoke Pandit, a member of the Censor Board and President of Indian Film and TV Directors Association, is planning to approach the Information & Broadcasting Ministry with representatives of producers, directors and technical associations. "I'm a filmmaker myself and I don't agree with these creative restrictions on potraying a character. A sex worker will sound like a professor now?" he grouses.
CBFC Chairperson, Pahlaj Nihalani, who's at the centre of the storm, points out that he's a filmmaker too and it is not his intention to harrass anyone. "These are not my rules. I have merely listed the guidelines of the Board for new members and producers applying for certification," he reasons. "Earlier, people got away with a lot of objectionable stuff by bending these guidelines and we ended up with cases filed against these films after their release. We can't allow that anymore."

Sanskari Alok Nath won’t play sleazy sasur in Kya Kool Hain Hum 3

Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 10, 2015)
Alok Nath has established himself as big screen's favourite babujee with a string of roles. Ekta Kapoor made a futile attempt to break that image and approached him to play Tusshar Kapoor's to-be father-in-law in the third film in the Kya Kool Hain Hum franchise. However, much to her dismay, the veteran actor turned her down.
A source close to the development told Mirror, "Alok Nath wasn't comfortable with the sexual innuendos and double-meaning jokes and politely made this clear to the studio executives that he wasn't interested in being a part of Kya Kool Hain Hum 3."
Confirming this, the actor said, "Yes, they did approach me with something I have never done in my entire career. Suddenly, if I were to be seen in a sex comedy, it wouldn't be acceptable to my fans."
What was the role exactly? "It was that of Tusshar's potential father-in-law and the dialogue was pretty much in sync with the franchise's USP. As an actor, I admit, I should experiment with different characters, but I couldn't see myself doing anything so drastic," he asserted.
Tanveer Bookwala, Chief Creative Officer of the production house, admitted that they had expected to pull off a casting coup of sorts by getting the sanskari babuji to do a sex comedy. "But things didn't work out," he sighed.
Kareena Kapoor won't play Sangeeta Bijlani, makers look for younger actress?

Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 16, 2015)
While the trade is buzzing with Kareena Kapoor being roped in to play Sangeeta Bijlani in the Tony D'Souza-directed biopic on Mohammed Azharuddin, Mirror has learnt that the actress is no longer associated with the project. A source close to the development informed Mirror that the actress had been in advance talks with the makers but has now decided against doing the film.
Said the source, "Kareena had intended to do the film and even had a few meetings with Ekta Kapoor (the film's producer). But the talks were at a preliminary stage. No paperwork had been done. Bebo is more keen on Abhishek Chaubey's drugs drama, Udta Punjab, which goes on floors around the same time. She has started preparatory work on it."

Countering rumours that director Sujoy Ghosh has been asked to rework the script, Bookwala said: “Sujoy and Pratim D Gupta have written a spectacular script, with Sujoy's Kahaani co-writer Suresh Nair as the supervisor.“
Bookwala is tight-lipped on the identity of the heroine but according to a source close to the development, Jacqueline Fernandez, who has worked with Sujoy in Aladin earlier, is on the verge of being finalised. The source said: “She's figuring out her dates while other modalities are being worked out.“ This is no dancing around-the-confers-kind of a role. She will play a mother of an eight-year-old who is also the prime suspect in her husband's murder. Saif will essay the role of her neighbour who is a mathematics professor.
Another character, a cop who is also a maths enthusiast is yet to be cast. The film will be mostly shot in Kalimpong. Sujoy had done a recee of the hill-station for another project, Durga Rani Singh.
After Kangana Ranaut dropped out, that project has been put on the backburner. “The locations he chose then will be seen in this film. Devotion is just the working title. Eventually, they will come up with an apt Hindi one,“ the source said.

Mirror had earlier reported (November 15) that XES, an erotic drama, to be directed by Ram Gopal Varma and produced by Ekta Kapoor, has been put in cold storage.
Now, Mirror has learnt that Ekta has replaced RGV with Ken Ghosh, best remembered for the Shahid Kapoor-Amrita Rao romcom Ishq Vishk.
Confirming this, Tanveer Bookwala, Chief Creative Officer of Ekta's production house, said, "Ken has the right combination of aesthetics, entertainment and humour which is what this film needs."
The film, now titled X.X.X, will go on floors early next year with a cast of newcomers. It's a collage of five short stories with sex as the central theme.
When contacted, Ghosh admitted, "I am known for romantic comedies like Ishq Vishk and Chance Pe Dance, But I do have a dark, kinky side which not too many people know about."
"I'm exploring this side of me in this film which will break all barriers in the erotic space," he asserted. Elaborating on the plot, he informed, "Some of the stories are deliciously evil while some are trippy. The film is a blend of complex human emotions and the sex here will be highly stylised and definitely not vulgar."
When asked if X.X.X would be his big comeback vehicle, he laughed, "I have been written off so many times in the past that honestly, it doesn't bother me anymore. I stopped believing in comebacks as these are only titles. I only believe in great scripts and X.X.X has some terrific stories."
