The Tamil film PONNIYIN SELVAN - PART 2 continued its good run on Tuesday as it collected over 6 crore nett in Tamil Nadu which is a good collection for the state on a weekday. The overall collections are 61 crore nett and it should cruise to the 100 crore nett mark and emerge as the top Tamil film of 2023.

It is not matching the collections of the first part and in todays scenario, a second part of a blockbuster should actually be doing better. But maybe, despite blockbuster success, it may not have been a craze for the audience or a release after just 7 months after the first part does not let a craze develop with the audience.

The all India collections of PONNIYIN SELVAN - PART 2 crossed 100 crore in five days and is doing reasonable business in all markets but again does not compare well with the first part.

The Tamil film PONNIYIN SELVAN - PART 2 held up well on Monday due to it being a holiday in most of the southern states for Labour Day including the main market of Tamil Nadu where the collections were pretty much similar to the first day.

The film has collected 54 crore nett in four days in Tamil Nadu. The top grossers in the state are the Pongal releases THUNIVU and VARISU with 89 crore and 109 crore respectively; it should beat these two films. PONNIYIN SELVAN - PART 1 is at 172 crore nett and is the all time record in the state and that is a tough task due to the weekend being less.

The all India collections of the PONNIYIN SELVAN - PART 2 are at 93 crore nett. The film will cross the 100 crore nett mark in five days and can target 200 crore which is a rarity for Tamil films.

The film has seen huge overseas results which should come in at around $10 million in 3 days and this ensures a huge worldwide total. The immigration of Tamilians in recent years not only from India but from Sri Lanka has seen the overseas market really jump for this industry.

The Tamil film PONNIYIN SELVAN - PART 2 has done very good business over its first weekend with of collections of 72 crore nett apprx. The first part of the film had done around 90 crore nett. So, it does not compare well but standalone, these are very good collections.

The Tamil Nadu market has done 41 crore nett plus which are the best weekend numbers for the year in the home circuit but Monday is crucial if the film is to go on and do a good number. There are not many films that go to 100 crore in Tamil Nadu and that is the first first target.

The Tamil industry has seen three films comfortably cross the 200 crore nett mark (2.0, PONNIYIN SELVAN - PART 1 and VIKRAM) while ENTHIRAN (ROBOT) also did 200 crore nett apprx way back in 2010. PONNIYIN SELVAN - PART 1 went to collect around 260 crore nett. But here, 200 crore nett looks a huge target though if it sustains like the first part it should get there.

The main market is Tamil Nadu and the film was pretty much flat here but that is good for a film that opened well. It is not going to go near the business of the first film though it can easily become the biggest film in Tamil Nadu of 2023. The opening of the film was third highest in the state after the two Pongal releases THUNIVU and VARISU.

The Tamil film PONNIYIN SELVAN - PART 2 has recorded very good collections on day one driven by the business in Tamil Nadu and its all India collections will be above 20 crore nett at around 23-24 crore nett. These collections are very good but lower than the first part of the film released in September 2022 which grossed around 30 crore nett.

The first part of the film is the biggest grosser ever in Tamil Nadu with collections of 170 crore nett plus and also the biggest BLOCKBUSTER for the Tamil film industry in recent times. It was the second highest grossing film after 2.0 but that film was mainly down to the Hindi version. Take that out and then PONNIYIN SELVAN - PART 1 is miles better, especially in Tamil Nadu.

The fact that the opening is 25-30% down on the first film makes it tough to reach the numbers of the first film but as a stand alone product, it should get good numbers. As far as Tamil cinema goes, this year the opening is second best after the 16 crore nett of THUNIVU in Tamil Nadu. PONNIYIN SELVAN - PART 2 and VARISU both have opened around 14 crore nett.

In terms of all India, it is the highest opening for the Tamil film industry as THUNIVU and VARISU did 22 core nett and 21.50 crore nett respectively. The overseas numbers are huge but again less than the first film.
