The actress, who is all set to make her debut as a judge on a reality show, talks about returning to showbiz and Ranbir-Alia’s wedding

Neetu Kapoor bid adieu to a promising film career following her marriage with Rishi Kapoor at the age of 21. The actress, who returned to the big screen with Love Aaj Kal in 2009, finds herself in the spotlight again – this time, for her television debut with Dance Deewane Juniors and most importantly, her son, Ranbir Kapoor’s marriage to Alia Bhatt next week. Expressing excitement in an interview with BT, she adds that she hopes to share with her bahuthe same outstanding relationship that she shared with her saas, Krishna Raj Kapoor. Excerpts...
You started at a very young age as a child artiste. Do you relate to the kids and their journey when you judge them on the show?
Kids are my weakness. I love them. They all dance so beautifully, I get confused while deciding who performed better. The experts in dance are Marzi Pestonji and Nora Fatehi and I enjoy learning from them. We weren’t perfect, but we learnt from our mistakes. Even the public would give us second chances ki yeh film nahi chali toh doosri chalegi. Today, they are trained and perfect. So, you can’t tell who is good and who is bad. Of course, we encourage them. But otherwise, all of them are outstanding and are doing something new. I am learning from them, and it is amazing.
One expected to see more of you in films following your return to the big screen with Love Aaj Kal and Do Dooni Chaar (2010), but you choose to do just a select few. Have you had a change of heart recently as you’ve taken on more projects?
I had no inclination to return to acting, but the makers of Do Dooni Chaar needed me. So, Rishi ji requested me to become a part of the film, which I turned down initially. However, he suggested that I hear the script before I made up my mind. I loved the story, agreed to be a part of it and the film was appreciated by people. I did Besharam because mera ek laalach tha kyunki usme Ranbir aur mere husband dono the. Unfortunately, the film didn’t work at the box office. I wasn’t keen on returning to working, as I was busy. Rishi ji would keep me so busy that I didn’t get time for anything else. However, after my husband passed away, my children (Ranbir and Riddhima) told me to work as they didn’t want me to sit around at home. That’s how I was pushed to do JugJugg Jeeyo and a couple of other shows. I started enjoying the process. I started building my confidence which was zero, when I started shooting for JugJugg Jeeyo. My kids encouraged me to do something. I have also become quite social. I would hardly invite people home or go out. My husband’s friends were my friends. I rarely went out for lunches and dinners. But now, I am socialising all the time, because this is what I want to do now. Life gets too sad and I don’t want to be sad. I want to be happy.
You left films at the age 21, when you were at the peak of your career. Now that you are back, how do you look back at this on-and-off relationship with films?
I started working in films at the age of five. I had enough of it by the time I turned 21. I had no life as a child or a teenager. I didn’t have any friends. I would work three shifts in a day and did 80 films in seven years as a heroine. I earned a lot of fame at the age of eight with Do Kaliyaan (1968). Fame bhi mil gayi, sab kuchh mil gaya, so I just desired to have peace of mind then. Back then, acting was like a job for me. I never desired to become an actor. I had to do it for my family. Now, I want to be busy and happy. The only thing I know is to be in movies and that’s what I am doing. More than it being a tool to divert my mind, I am enjoying the process. I derive happiness from it. I enjoy getting ready, meeting people, thinking about the film and learning my lines. I have to put in extra effort in memorizing, as after a certain age, memory thodi weak ho jaati hai (smiles). I remember those days when I would read my dialogues once and give the shot. I was so quick. Even for my dance performances, I would rehearse just once and give the take. There were no rehearsals. Aaj kal toh 10-10 dinn ek gaane ki rehearsal karte hain. I am more excited today as an artiste than I was in those days. I am looking forward to each phase. I want to travel as well.
The last two years have been tough for you, from Rishi Kapoor being diagnosed with cancer and his passing. Has this phase changed you as a person?
It takes time to gain the confidence back. Maybe, I am not 100 per cent there, but I am getting there. It has changed me as a person. I have become stronger. I was always strong with my husband, but today, I have to look after my house, finances, etc. Earlier, my husband looked after these aspects, but today I have become the man of the house. So, I have become stronger than I was when my husband was alive, as I was dependent on him. Today I am looking after everything.
There is a lot of buzz around Ranbir and Alia’s wedding. When is it happening?
I hope ho jaaye. Mujhe kuchh pata nahi hai. I would like to celebrate and say it out loud, but kids today are different. Both of them are private people. Kab kar lenge pata nahi, but hogi zaroor and I wish jaldi ho jaaye because I love them both. Alia is such a lovely girl. I just adore her. She is a beautiful person. Ranbir and Alia are made for each other. They are quite similar. Ranbir is pure-hearted and uncorrupted. He sees things in a positive way. There is no jealousy with anybody or negativity. I see the same quality in her. Both are confident and don’t have bad things to say about anybody — even if somebody’s movie is doing well or is better looking. They complement each other.
You have maintained that your mother-in-law, Krishna Raj Kapoor, always looked out for you and treated you more like a daughter. Do you share the same equation with Alia?
I hope I do in the future… when they get married. My relationship with my mother-in-law was outstanding. She loved me more than her son. We were friends. We spoke about everything under the sun, and I would complain about my husband to her (laughs!). We were very open. I hope I have the same equation with Alia because she is also outstanding and amazing.

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt made a joint appearance at a Kali puja pandal in Mumbai during Diwali, along with their Brahmastra director Ayan Mukerji. Rumour has it that the good-looking couple, who was slated to tie the knot this year, might have just pushed back their wedding to next year. While December was considered to be their month, it is Vicky Kaushal and Katrina Kaif, who will apparently exchange the wedding vows instead. Keeping with the actors’ culture of keeping their wedding private, there has been no confirmation or denial from either of the jodis or their friends and families. While Katrina had denied her wedding news initially, Ranbir was more forthcoming about his plans.
In an interview last year, Ranbir had revealed that he would have been married to girlfriend Alia if it wasn’t for the pandemic. He had also said that he wants to tick mark that goal soon. While it was speculated that this jodi will walk down the aisle this December, we hear that their fans may have to wait a bit longer. While there has been no confirmation on this, sources suggest that the couple will now get married in April next year owing to work commitments.
The next few months are also hectic for Alia and Ranbir, given their shooting schedules and film promotions. They have at least four film releases next year, Brahmastra being the only one featuring them together. Alia has Gangubai Kathiawadi, RRR, Darlings and Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani lined up for release. The actress left for Delhi for a schedule of Rocky Aur Rani... recently. Ranbir, too, has Shamshera, Animal and Luv Ranjan’s untitled film apart from Brahmastra in his kitty. Portions of a few are still being filmed. “They would rather complete these commitments and then get into the wedding groove peacefully,” seems to be the plan, says a source.
“Beyond work commitments, the Kapoors love their family, and it’s a huge one. It will be a grand affair, and next year seems like a safer choice given the pandemic scare as well. It will also buy some time for their bungalow (Krishna Raj) renovation work,” said an insider. In fact, the couple was recently spotted at the construction site with Neetu Kapoor. Since the respected families haven’t announced the plans yet, let’s wait and watch if the couple chooses December or April.

Bandra’s Pali Hill area boasts of several landmark addresses of Bollywood stars. One such attraction was Rishi and Neetu Kapoor’s iconic bungalow, Krishna Raj, which the power couple had bought in 1980. The duo stayed there with their children — Ranbir and Riddhima — for a long time. However, in 2016, the structure was razed to be redeveloped as a 15-storey high-rise, so that the Kapoor clan could stay together.
While Rishi and Neetu are temporarily living in a building off Hill Road, Ranbir has shifted to Vastu, which is a few blocks away from Krishna Raj. Now, we have learnt that the Kapoors will move into the high-rise by 2020. A source tells us, “It will be a luxurious abode. The plinth has been laid and if all goes well, the structure should be ready by 2019. The family will move in once the interiors are done.” It’ll be interesting to see what kind of a modern facelift this erstwhile landmark will get.

On Thursday, the open-air Prithvi Café, adjacent to the late Shashi
Kapoor’s Juhu residence Janki Kutir, was bathed in yellow and white
lights for his memorial service. The large peepal tree on the premises,
its periphery a preferred spot for Kapoor where he would sit four days a
week, was surrounded by candles, photographs and condolence letters,
while the entrance to the theatre was decorated with lamps, banana
leaves and a large portrait of the actor-filmmaker who breathed his last
at age 79 on December 4.
The café staff served ‘sulaimani chai’ — his favourite drink — to visitors, fans, theatre artists and Bollywood stars for the two-hour service that wrapped up at 7 pm.
Kapoor’s children — Sanjana, Kunal and Karan — greeted guests with warm
smiles. “There will be no more condolences. From now on, we shall only
remember the actor, the legend and the star with wide smiles,” Kapoor’s
eldest nephew Randhir, who turned up with wife Babita and daughter
Karisma, told Mirror.
Soni Razdan was the first to arrive at
the venue, and greeted Sanjana with a warm hug. Kapoor’s niece, Reema
Jain, was among the early arrivals too, with son Aadar and aunt Neila
Devi. Kunal’s daughter Shaira accompanied the Kapoor matriarch Krishna
Raj. Tara Sharma was seen interacting with Karan, Rajiv Kapoor, Soha Ali
Khan and Kunal Kemmu. Also present were Sanjana’s husband Valmik Thapar
and Kunal’s son Zahan Prithviraj Kapoor. “The front rows were already
full when a teary-eyed Rekha arrived inside the Prithvi theatre where
the memorial film was being screened. She proceeded to sit on the floor
next to Kapoor’s grandchildren, holding onto Neetu Kapoor’s hand,” a
guest said, adding that Sanjana delivered a moving speech on Prithvi —
her father’s favourite place in the city — and thanked everyone for the
“love they have shown papa”. She added that Prithvi House celebrates two
special days, which her father always made sure to attend — his father
Prithviraj Kapoor’s birthday on November 3, and his wife Jennifer’s
birthday on February 28. Now, Prithvi will also be lit up every year for
his birthday on March 18, Sanjana said.
Guests continued to
file in well past sunset, including Kiran Rao, Abbas-Mustan, Vindoo Dara
Singh, Sanjay Khan with wife Zarine, Waheeda Rehman with daughter
Kashvi, Padmini Kolhapure, Divya Dutta, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and wife
Anupama.
Vivaan Shah came with parents Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak, while actors Kavin Dave, Pavan Malhotra, Poonam Dhillon, Rani Mukerji, Vrajesh Hirjee, Kabir Bedi, Nandita Das, Chunky Pandey, Dalip Tahil, Prem Chopra, Suniel Shetty, Hema Malini, Ahana Kumra, Danny Denzongpa, Anjan Srivastav also paid homage to the late actor. Filmmakers Govind Nihalani, Ashutosh Gowariker, Rohan Sippy, Madhur Bhandarkar and Rakesh Roshan who arrived with close friend Jeetendra, sat in the café for a while after greeting the family, while Gulzar greeted singers Asha Bhosle and Udit Narayan. Maheep Kapoor arrived with Sunita Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia was present too, as was Jackie Shroff’s wife Ayesha. The evening ended with a performance by Naseer’s troupe Motley’s The Father.
The previous day, another memorial
had been held in the Pakistani city of Peshawar outside Kapoor’s father,
Prithviraj Kapoor’s ancestral house, while in India, artist Ranjit
Dahiya paid tribute with a 10-foot painting of the star.

At this time of grief, my thoughts are with you,” the letter read.

It is the end of an era,” Randhir Kapoor told the media, pointing out
that his uncle, Shashi Kapoor, had been paired with his wife Babita in
Ek Sriman Ek Srimati and Haseena Maan Jayegi and that he was “the most
good looking star of his time”.Randhir had informed the media about his uncle’s demise and was the first one to arrive at the suburban hospital with nephew Ranbir Kapoor on Monday evening. Kapoor matriarch Krishna Raj had turned up shortly after him. “Shashiji was suffering from a kidney problem since many years. He had been on constant dialysis and in and out of the hospital. He passed away at 5:20 pm on December 4. He was 79,” Randhir said, adding that a funeral will be held on Tuesday morning after the arrival of the late actor’s son, Karan Kapoor, who is based in the UK.
By 8pm, Amitabh, Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Rani Mukerji with Vaibhavi Merchant, Kajol, and other Kapoors— Babita, Karisma, Kareena with husband Saif Ali Khan —had arrived at the late star’s Juhu residence.
R K Studios fire: A legacy gutted, and the Kapoors are mourning

Just the memory of the calamity brought a lump to Rishi's throat. “I still cannot believe it. I'm partially in denial even now. I spent several hours looking around the studio and as the embers fell, I felt distressed and helpless. Yet, here I am at home and I'm still thinking that perhaps it was just a bad dream,“ Rishi told Mumbai Mirror. His son Ranbir, who heard about the incident in London, is rushing back.
Rishi was not in a position to comment on the exact cause of the fire because everything he heard was “conjecture“. While the police and the Fire Brigade officials have begun the process of a panchnama to ascertain the exact cause, it is said that on Friday, a reality show, Super Dancer 2, was shot on the floor till the early hours of Saturday. Post pack-up, the lights on the set and in the makeup rooms were switched off.
Rishi recalled some of the films that were shot in the studio, on the very stage that has now been gutted: Awara, Shree 420, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, Mera Naam Joker, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Ram Teri Ganga Maili, Dharam Karam, Prem Rog, to Rishi's own directorial film, Aa Ab Laut Chalen in 1999... “My own journey at the R K Studio started at the age of two when I shot with my elder siblings, Randhir and Ritu, for the song 'Pyaar Hua Iqraar Hua' from Shree 420. I kept crying because I had to walk through heavy rain and Nargisji bribed me with a Cadbury chocolate, promising to give it to me if I did what my father asked me to do. That aside, can you now imagine, how devastated I was when I saw the fire destroy everything around me? I am 65 now. It's a place I have been frequenting for 63 years. So have my siblings. It is an equally big blow for Randhir and Rajeev,“ Rishi said.
He said it was all the more heart breaking for the matriarch, Krishna Raj Kapoor, who has been a gracious host at countless events at the studio. “My mother is devastated. She keeps indifferent health and we asked her not to come to the studio because the fire was quite bad. There was smoke bellowing all around,“ he said.
When asked about the losses, Rishi said “everything was gone“, including the famous joker mask Raj Kapoor wore in Mera Naam Joker. “There were costumes from every RK film, from Awara to Chalen. Most of the stuff was kept neatly in trunks and some of it was even labelled. The costumes worn by every RK heroine, from Nargis to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, is lost. The jewellery worn by Padmini in Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai was also stored here with a lot of love. There were spears, sabres, artefacts, furniture and other regalia used for the various shoots. The Mera Naam Joker mask and clothes... Dabboo and I couldn't believe what hit us. This is probably why they say that one should never put all eggs in one basket. But for us, this was our father's legacy, and it was a treasure trove.“
R K Studio had seen several tragedies. In 1970 when Mera Naam Joker flopped, Raj Kapoor had to mortgage the studio. Then, towards the end of his life, the Kapoor patriarch sold two stages of RK Studios for a paltry sum. But even after Raj Kapoor's death, his sons never contemplated selling any part of the property. “We hung on to our father's legacy,“ Rishi said. “Today I feel a sense of deep bereavement because we lost all of this.“ Echoing Randhir Kapoor's statement that the family may come to terms with the financial loss but not with the emotional loss, Rishi said, “My father didn't buy a home for his family until Bobby's success. He put all his earnings into the studio because cinema was his religion.“
It is said that back in 1951, Raj Kapoor had constructed just four
walls on Stage One, which didn't even have a proper roof because he used
natural light to shoot. “My brothers and I can build the four walls
again and even add a roof. But how can we compensate the loss of the
precious memorabilia? That will never come back. Countless films,
besides those made under our home banner, have been shot at R K Studio. It
has also been the venue for our Holi and Ganpati celebrations. The loss
is not just ours as a family, it is a loss for the entire film
fraternity,“ said Rishi.He recalls that RK came into being in the year of Awara. “My father shot the famous dream sequence here. At that time there were just four walls and no roof. The entire dream sequence was shot after sundown because Chembur got electricity only in the nights in the 1950s. During the day, my father toiled for other filmmakers as an actor...and then at night he put his earnings into his own film,“ he said.

Salim Khan gets emotional on his one-of-a-kind throwback to the legendary showman

In a first of its kind from
within the folds of Mumbai's film industry, an audio tribute to the
everlasting majesty of actor-director-producer Raj Kapoor has been
recorded by the iconic scriptwriter Salim Khan. The 20-minuter
throwback comprising a voice-over and excerpts from RK songs catches
Khan in a palpably emotional mode. The scriptwriter who had
kick-started his career as an actor, had played a supporting part in
Diwana (1967), top lining Raj Kapoor and Saira Banu.“In between the shots, we would speak at length. And we kept in touch forever. I've been an unwavering fan of all his films especially Awara (1951). Some of them, like Mera Naam Joker (1970) may not have clicked commercially but today it is justly considered a cult classic,“ narrates Khan, punctuated by the traffic sounds outside his Bandra, Carter Road residence, a javelin's throw away from the Mount Mary fair on Sunday.
Visuals or a video clip, instead of the audio one, would not have been as effective, Khan insists. Readied only of late, the tribute was played back for Mrs Krishna Raj Kapoor, who was moved to tears. Randhir Kapoor and Manoj Kumar have heard it too, the latter going to the extent of saying over the 'phone, “Salim, it's one of your best, heartfelt creations.“
After lending it an ear, Lata Mangeshkar, stated, “I have seen those wonderful days of cinema in close-up, yaad dilakar toh aapne mujhe rula hi diya (by reminding me of those days, you brought tears to my eyes.“
Bring up the gutting of R K Studio following an outbreak of fire on Saturday, and Khan ripostes, “I have abstained from giving sound bytes and quotes on the devastation. What else can one say but that a priceless part of our cinema heritage has been lost?“ As it happened, coincidentally the audio tribute was aimed to remind the young generation of the cinematic genius of Raj Kapoor. The springboard for the tribute was a column Khan had written for a Hindi newspaper on R.K's 29th death anniversary on June 2. To take that to another level, Khan was assisted by TV personality Khalid Hashmi. Never-heard-of-before anecdotes emerge. Example: Salim-Javed were convinced that they had authored the 'perfect' script for Deewaar (1975) till they were told by Raj Kapoor, “Perhaps Amitabh Bachchan shouldn't have been dressed up jazzily and made to behave stylishly once he became rich. You should have kept him in shabby clothes and looking rough even as he climbs up the social ladder. That would have been more poignant.“
Khan recalls, “I would touch the feet of Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar. Not because I believe in tradition but because their achievements have commanded love and respect, instinctively. Tell me, if any hero had a gap between his teeth today, wouldn't he have rushed to a dentist to look perfect? I have watched actors from every generation since the 1950s. No one can touch them.“

Few people have impacted Bollywood more than the original showman, Raj Kapoor. So it is no surprise that rumours of a biopic being planned on the legendary filmmaker often do the rounds. Over the last few months, buzz about Ranbir Kapoor bringing his grandfather’s journey to the big screen has gained credence. However, Rishi Kapoor dismissed the idea of a biopic on his father.
Talking to mid-day, the senior actor said, “The discussion has been going on for 15 years. Producer Bobby Bedi has been on it. He offered to make a film, but we, as a family, have an objection.”
Given how Kapoor was instrumental in shaping the Hindi film industry, Rishi understands that the filmmaker’s journey makes for a great story. “We are aware that a lot of people are curious to know the story of Raj Kapoor,” he said, adding, “But, we have decided that we won’t allow anyone to make the biopic till our mother [Krishna Raj Kapoor] is alive. If anyone still goes ahead and makes it, we will negate it.”
The senior actor also pointed out that a biopic may end up ruffling feathers. “My father had relationships that cannot be denied. We don’t want to hurt anybody’s emotions, neither do we want to stir up any controversy.”
He added how Sunil Dutt too was against the idea of a biopic on Kapoor, who was a close associate of the former’s wife Nargis. “My sister [Ritu Nanda] had once asked Dutt sahab whether he would give anybody the permission to make a biopic on our father. His reply simply was ‘Let sleeping dogs lie.’ So as of now, I don’t think it’s a good decision. If and when we plan to make it, we want it to show who Raj Kapoor truly was.”

month-and a-half at Mumbai's Breach Candy hospital, the matriarch of the
first family of Hindi cinema, Krishna Raj Kapoor, 87, was discharged on
Friday. She is now being attended to at her bungalow by a nurse and her
in-house staff. Her eldest son, Randhir Kapoor, who lives in Deonar
Cottage with her, has been keeping a tab on her health, while her second
daughter-in-law, Neetu Kapoor, is greatly relieved with the latest
developments. “I'm happy mummy is back at home at Deonar,“ she said.
Sources reveal that Mrs Kapoor, who had been hospitalised for age-related problems, had to be kept at the hospital because she complained of loss of appetite. “She was barely eating which made her weak,'' said a source. Her health gradually improved after she was administered enzymes needed to help her appetite. Once she started eating, she gathered enough strength to be discharged.

After months of staying at his grandmother, Krishna Raj Kapoor’s bungalow, Deonar Cottage, Ranbir Kapoor is all set to move in to his bachelor pad in Pali Hill, Vastu, on December 14. The date coincides with his grandfather Raj Kapoor’s 92nd birth anniversary.
On Thursday, his father Rishi Kapoor took to Twitter to thank Gauri Khan who has done up the interiors of Ranbir’s 2460 squarefeet home on the seventh floor of a Pali Hill high-rise. Kapoor senior said, “Vastu Wonderful! Gauri Khan! You have made a home out of Ranbir’s house. Beautifully done! Both Neetu and I are overwhelmed. Thank you!”
When asked what really overwhelmed him about his superstar son’s new residence, Rishi said, “Well, it is one of the most beautiful homes I have seen. I profusely thank Gauri for doing it up so beautifully and in accordance to Ranbir’s tastes.”
The star-father stonewalled all further queries on the subject. But a visitor to Ranbir’s new digs said that the house is designed for a bachelor with exquisite taste.
Our source added, “It has a huge bedroom, a theatre and a huge space for his two pets, an English Mastiff and a French Mastiff, to run around.’’ It is said that there is also a special place provided for the caretakers of the dogs besides the other housing-keeping staff.
On November 29, Ranbir had hosted a huge party at his grandmother’s house. The invitees included everyone who had worked on his latest 100-crore film, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. While one guest maintained that it was a success party for the film, buzz is the get-together was organised to introduce RK’s Dragon trainer, Ido, to his friends and also because the actor knew he’d be moving out of Deonar soon and wanted his friends to meet his grandma who he dotes on. The dinner was attended by most of his close friends, including Karan Johar, Ayan Mukerji, Alia Bhatt and Sonam Kapoor.

Hill high-rise is still getting some last-minute touches from designer
Gauri Khan.Says a source, “Ranbir was to move into his new pad on his 34th birthday on September 28. But work is still going on so he will only move in November.”
Gauri who has done the interiors of SRK and her own heritage bungalow, Mannat, and other high-profile homes in the past, was approached by Ranbir and since he’s a friend, she was happy to share her expertise with him. Mirror (July 26) had reported that the look while youthful will have a mix of both art and history and the duo has had long discussions on the decor, even going shopping for curios sourced from across the world.
Reportedly, RK has actually started enjoying his stay at his grandmother Krishna Kapoor’s bungalow, Deonar Cottage. His dogs run around the lawns and the actor himself savours the serenity of his surroundings. Another reason why he has extended his stay at Deonar is because his grandmother hasn’t been keeping well and he wants to be with her to take care of her.
The source adds, “Ranbir has always been close to his grandmother and in the last few months, they have grown even closer. He enjoys her sense of humour and loves the way she pampers him. So he is happy to stay at Deonar for a longer period of time.”

family Bollywood, Krishna Raj Kapoor has been in of Mumbai's Breach
Candy Hospital for close to a fortnight now.She was admitted for age-related health issues. Her sons Randhir and Rishi Kapoor have been constant visitors along with her daughter Rima Jain and bahu Neetu Kapoor. On Wednesday, Rishi had only just arrived at the trailer launch of his next film when he received a phone call intimating him that his mother's health was failing. The actor's face turned ashen and he rushed to be by her side. Kareena Kapoor Khan, who was in Mehboob Studios for a shoot, wrapped it up quickly and hurried to the hospital to see her grandma.
The concerned family members were all praying, and just before calling it a night, a source from the hospital said that the senior Mrs Kapoor's condition had stablised. Though she was still in the ICU, she showed signs of recovery. At the time of going to press, we were told that there was nothing alarming. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Just as the new generation
is not familiar with KL Saigal's song, Ek bangla banega nyara (from the
1937 film President), probably in the next few decades, people might not
be aware that Nargis Dutt Road in the posh Pali Hill area in Mumbai,
boasted of some landmark Bollywood addresses for a long time. Though a
lot of filmi folk still live along this famous road, their mighty
bungalows now soar skywards. It's been a while since Sunil Dutt's Ajanta
gave way to the high-rise, Imperial Heights. Now there are only a few
bungalows left in this golden realty zone.
After Ranbir Kapoor moved out of his family home, Krishna Raj, parents Rishi and Neetu Kapoor too have shifted to another house on Hill Road. A few years ago, it was reported that their bungalow was going to be rebuilt. This impressive landmark will also disappear and get a new face soon.
Dilip Kumar's iconic bungalow, one of the first Hindi film celebrity addresses, was among the first to be redeveloped. However, the project reportedly got delayed due to disputes with the original plot owners. For many years, the thespian and his wife Saira Banu have been living in another bungalow across the road, a few metres away from Imperial Heights.
Like its legendary owner, Gulzar saab, who is always dressed in crisp whites, the sprawling bungalow Boskyana sits pretty in all its pristine glory, right next to Krishna Raj. The house is named after his daughter Bosky (Meghna). In October 2012, Gulzar got into a legal battle with a developer and a housing society to reclaim exclusive rights to Boskyana after they had fraudulently deprived him of 400 sq m land surrounding the bungalow.
Just like the old order giveth way to the new, Imran Khan's plush building is a new avatar of his grandfather, the late filmmaker Nasir Hussain's (known for super hits films like Teesri Manzil, Yaadon Ki Baaraat and Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak) bungalow. About 50 years after Nasir Hussain built it, Imran Khan redeveloped it into a fancy apartment. After two years of staying in a rented place, Imran and his family moved back to this address that has a solar energy system and a swimming pool, besides other modern amenities.
Last but not the least is filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's bungalow called Mamta. The exterior of his home looks simple, but the interiors are done tastefully and artistically, often reflecting the kind of cinema he makes.

Rishi Kapoor and his wife Neetu Kapoor will be moving
out of their family bungalow Krishna Raj in Pali Hill in the next few
weeks and stay at a place nearby owned by Neetu. Their son Ranbir is
already staying separately.
Says Rishi a tad sadly, “We are moving out of our family home, at least for three years. That’s the time it will take the bungalow to be renovated. The place we’re going to, is on Hill Road.” The Kapoors own three floors in the high-rise. “The original plan was that we’d occupy one floor while Ranbir would occupy another in Neetu’s place on Hill Road. That didn’t happen. He has got his own place,” says Rishi.
Ask him if he misses having his son around and Rishi shrugs, “We see him whenever we feel like. He was here for dinner on the evening that he completed the shooting of Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha.”
Pali Hill residents file RTI to seek details of Rishi Kapoor’s bungalow expansion plan

Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor’s plan to reconstruct his iconic Krishna Raj bungalow in Pali Hill has been stuck for over four years now as the civic authorities are yet to give a go-ahead to such a large-scale renovation process. Now a member of the Pali Hill Residents’ Association, which has been objecting to his proposal for an office space and preview theatre on the property, has sought details of the plan through an RTI application.
A source says, “The Kapoors want to convert the bungalow into a 15-storey building with a swimming pool, office and a preview theatre, but it looks difficult. The association tried to find out his plan, but he never reverted to the query.”
Madhu Poplai, secretary of the association, confirms the buzz about the RTI application. “Information about the plans for Krishna Raj has been sought as there were reports of the bungalow being renovated. The association has never objected to any construction in the vicinity, but we have been opposing the plan for a preview theatre and office space. Pali Hill is a residential area and we want to maintain that,” she adds.
Kapoor remained unavailable for comment.

housemaker and astonishing cook, are just a few traits that define the
elegant Mrs Krishna Raj Kapoor epitomises the. While her famous husband
Raj Kapoor made monumental movies and romanced his heroines Krishna
brought up her five children. Sons Randhir, Rishi and Rajeev and
daughters Ritu and Rima are what they are because of their mother.
Sandwiched in the middle of his four siblings, Rishi Kapoor holds forth
on his iconic mother.
“I love to talk about my mother,” offers Rishi, as he rants on, “But why on Mother’s Day only? Every day should belong to the people you love the most. I refuse to slot my loved ones according to a day of the week….Mother’s Day, Father’s Day…can you believe it, they even celebrated a Grocery Day!! And if that isn’t enough they also had an Asthma Day!! I refuse to discuss my mother as just a special person for a day. Having said that, I don’t mind talking about her any day of the year.”
For their mothers, kids never grow up. A fact the actor underscores when he says, “Where do I begin? What do I say? What can one say about one’s own mother? Whatever we are as a family today is because of her. I am still her bachcha. Can you believe it? I am going to be 63 and she still fires the hell out of me. She advises me on where to go, and how to conduct my life. I keep telling her that I am old enough to make my own decisions. My son is now living away from home. I am a grandfather. Let me make my own decisions, for God’s sake, I’m a grown-up man. But she doesn’t listen! But seriously, I want to make my mother happy.”
He reminisces, “My childhood memories with her are of school holidays in Jabalpur. My nanaji lived there. So we’d visit twice a year -- summer and winter. There, my mother would be the happiest with my uncles and aunts. Apart from being the wife of a celebrity, she was also a celebrity sister. My maternal uncles were actors Premnath and Rajendranath.”
The proud son adds, “My mother had tremendous endurance power. She is an amazing shock absorber. She stood steady through all my father’s stormy work pressures and all other stress. There were times when they had problems. But she overcame all the trauma. With five children to look after, she still managed to keep her family life beautifully together. It is said, bardasht ki hadd hoti hai. Not with her. She made sure my childhood was very lovely. She made sure all of us, three brothers and two sisters had a normal happy childhood.”

filmmaker's relatives and friends visited the RK residence at Chembur.A source said, “Mrs Krishna Raj Kapoor had organised a special lunch for the numerous guests. And most of the conversation veered around Raj saab.“
Rishi Kapoor, who was committed to a social cause elsewhere in the city, couldn't make it to his family home for lunch. His wife Neetu, who was expected to arrive from London later in the day, also skipped the do.
Rishi said, “We do not have a puja on birthdays. We usually have a puja on June 2, his death anniversary. Dad's friends, well-wishers and many of our family members came over to our family home yesterday to mark the occasion.“

Kat on the other hand, was been living independently ever since she moved to the city. Since she has done all this before, she has been taking care of all the paperwork.
Ever since the two have finalised their new abode, they have been quite busy getting the house ready. Right from picking up souvenirs from their trips to making the house feng shui-compliant, the couple is doing it all, so that things are peaceful and harmonious. A source close to the Dhoom 3 babe told us, “Kat is investing a lot of time reading up a lot about home decor on various sites, magazines and books for their new home.”

Armaan Jain, 23, is Raj Kapoor's fourth grandchild, who would be entering the movies. He is ambitious, easygoing and reserved and is both, nervous and excited, before his debut in Arif Ali's Lekar Hum Deewana Dil. While he looks up to Aamir Khan and Leonardo DiCaprio in the movies, he looks up to his father, Manoj Jain, in real life. Over an hour-long conversation with the Bombay Times, he talks about his spiritual connection with Raj Kapoor, his love for his nani Krishna Raj and why his mother Rima Jain should have been an actor. Excerpts:
Talk about your family background?
My mother, Rima Jain, is Raj Kapoor's daughter. My dada is basically from Bijnor in UP , where we have farms and own a big mango orchard. My dada had then moved to Lagos. My father studied at the London School of Economics in UK, after which he worked at Lagos before they all returned to India. My family was into garment exports and got into finance catering to the middle-class. My father Manoj Jain is an investment banker. My dad and Rajiv (Kapoor) mama were best friends and thus, my dad would often visit my nana's house, where he met my mom.
Also, my dad's sister was my mom's best friend. My dad would often go there and have a drink with my nana (Raj Kapoor). It was my nana's last wish that my mother marry my dad and thus, four months post his death, they got married. Rajiv mama was my dad's closest friend and he did not have kids, so he brought us up as his kids. He has always been a godfather to me. I have a younger brother Aadar, who also wants to get into films.
When did you know that you wanted to be an actor?
After school, I went to Regent College in London for my under-graduation to take a business degree. While I always knew in my heart that I wanted to be in films, I didn't have the guts to tell my parents that then. I topped my class in the first year, but felt that I was wasting time and money there. I actually wanted to come back and start working in films. In between my semesters, I got the opportunity to meet Karan Johar in Mumbai, who was then directing My Name Is Khan. I went to him and he took me as an assistant director under him. I told my parents that I wanted to drop out of Regent. I went around in circles in front of my parents telling them that, but, surprisingly, they were fine as long as I was going to give my 100% to what I was going to do. I assisted for three years in Dharma and worked on I Hate Luv Storys, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu and finally SOTY. I got passionate about direction and was struck by the camera. While assisting on SOTY, Abhishek Varman and I became really good friends. So, when Arif Ali was looking out for a new person, he referred me to him. I was auditioned three times before I was finally selected. When I was young, I used to watch a lot of my nana's movies. It would be either watching football or cricket or his movies. He died before I was born, so I always wanted to know who my grandfather was. I had a birthday party when I was two. I love jokers and my mom did a clown party for me. I must have watched Mera Naam Joker 50 times. Since I did not see my grandfather, I somehow believed as a kid that the joker in Mera Naam Joker was my grandfather. I always loved the joker. In school I would always do things that were stupid and crazy and make people laugh. That was my high. I wanted to always entertain and be the centre of attraction and knew that the best platform for me was movies.
Who do you love the most in the world?
My parents and my brother. Till today, there is nothing in my life hidden from them. I have never dated anyone as till three years back, I was an overweight kid at 100 kilos. I wish girls looked at me, but they didn't. I have now dropped 30 kilos. My nani used to feed me ghee everyday. Food is my biggest weakness. Whenever nani organises a dinner, we are such a family that everyone is there happily talking and enjoying their food. Everyone loves food in our family. I am an open book and my mom would just probably like to control my temper a little bit, as I get angry at times. My dad is proud of what I am doing and he is the one person I look up to for everything. It's his personality, the way he is with people, friendly , human, speaking to each and everyone the same way, be it the watchman, us or someone working in the house.
You are close to your nani Krishna Raj. Talk about her.
All through my growing up years, I would spend one weekend with my dada-dadi and one with my nani in Chembur, where she lives with my mamas - Randhir and Rajiv. I am very emotionally attached to her. She is very elegant. Till today, she will take 45 minutes to put on her makeup after taking her shower. I am fascinated with the way she wears her white sari and takes 45 minutes to wear her makeup. She will joke with me and say , 'I have a lot of men coming to see me.' Once we went on a cruise ship for a holiday . And we bumped into a mannequin. She looked at him and said, 'This is the first man who has fallen on me.' She is very funny and has a great sense of humour. My nani is the reason I was fat. I can't say no to her. She complimented me after seeing the trailer, but she is more nervous than my mom about my film.
Tell us about your mom Rima Jain?
My mom is closest to her sister Ritu Nanda, as sisters are always close. My mom was torn between her sister and me last year when my mausie Ritu Nanda was being treated for cancer in the US. My mom was there with her throughout and was torn between me and her, as I was at that time shooting for my film. I always feel that my mom should have been an actor. As an actor, I look up to her more than anyone else. She just has it. She is hyper, happy, full of energy with a spark in her eyes always. She is always cracking jokes and entertaining people. My grandfather was closest to my mom amongst his children, so while growing up she would always tell me about him being dildaar, a foodie and a workaholic, who was totally consumed by films.
My mom always said, 'When people pass away , they become God.' When I walk in to a set, I somewhere always believe that my grandfather is somewhere in me, around me. I take his name and Ganpati Bappa's name everytime I walk in. I feel a certain power that I can't explain. My mom heard somewhere that camera is your God, work is worship and that has stayed with me. In RK Studio, there is a room that used to be my nana's costume studio which has his film posters, costumes and most importantly, the joker from Mera Naam Joker. It is normally kept locked and nobody goes there. But I go there very often. I feel restless that I have not seen him. Every time I go there, I get fascinated and get teary eyed.

Ranbir Kapoor is all set to move out of his family home. Buzz is, his new pad at Hill Road is ready and the 30-year old actor will shift out of Krishna Raj on Pali Hill next week.
Ranbir had zeroed down on the apartment himself, after consulting a number of agents for an apartment located between Bandra and Juhu. He finalised the Hill Road property in 2012 and sources told this newspaper that he will occupy a full floor in the building.
Though he has not moved in, the young actor often unwinds there with his close friends. A source revealed, “Bahut dinon se interior décor ka kaam chal raha tha. Now, everything is complete and ready for Ranbir to move in.”
With this new acquisition, have Ranbir and lady love Katrina Kaif decided to create a space of their own, err, a love nest? Rumours have been flying thick and fast that Ranbir’s father Rishi Kapoor doesn’t approve of his girlfriend’s frequent trips to their home.
However, the source said, “Aisa kuch nahin hai. Ranbir is very close to his dad. He wanted his own space, and now that it is ready, he is shifting. But he will definitely be shuttling between the two homes, as and when he wants.”
Since 2011, talks of a renovating the Kapoor bungalow have been making headline, citing that Ranbir in particular was involved in the makeover which was to include a 70-seater mini theatre, a postproduction studio and a huge swimming pool. There were also rumours that Rishi had decided to transform his bungalow into a 14-storeyed building since he wanted to make space for his son’s future family.
Despite the plan for renovation being ready, the grapevine is that it still hasn’t been put into effect, as the governing body hasn’t given them required permissions.
