Karan Singh Grover opens about his divorces for the first ever: "There's nothing good about a breakup"

Vinay MR Mishra (BOMBAY TIMES; June 20, 2024)
Actor Karan Singh Grover rose to unprecedented fame through his stint on TV. As the actor completes 20 years one cannot help but wonder the love he received. However, with the unconditional love, also came multiple conjectures - right from multiple reports about him being unprofessional, him quitting the show, attitude issues, and more. Karan, however, never paid heed to them.
Karan states, “I wasn’t a professional actor. So, I can't say that, but I'm not the kind of person who would go and justify anything to anybody because I don't need to. I'm not somebody who gets bothered if people think good or bad about me. It's ok. It's their choice. It's their life. It is not even coming into my force field.”
That chain of thought may be one of the reasons why Karan has never spoken about his divorces that happened with Shraddha Nigam in 2009, and Jennifer Winget in 2014. As he sat down for conversation with Bombay Times, for the first time Karan addressed his two separations.
Karan tells us, “There's nothing good about a breakup or a divorce. Yeah, later when people move on, they realize that it happened for the best. That's a good thing. But I never felt the need to speak to anyone about the crap that's happening in my life because I don't expect people to come and talk to me about the crap that's happening in their life. That is not my main motive. I would like to spread some love and joy. Everyone has their own sh*t to deal with and I think everyone deserves that kind of privacy to handle their own sh*t."
Karan is now married to actress Bipasha Basu. He admits she has changed his entire life. "She is the kind of person who is in a constant state of giving. Whoever's in her life stays connected with her. All the heavy, all the negative, the lower vibration stuff just falls. I have another profession (he has also started painting) because of her. She helped me understand and connect with me. The real me. I know myself today because of her. The change that has happened is so drastic. Like from being a nocturnal being to somebody waking up at 5 a.m. and wanting to see every sunrise and every sunset," he signs off.
Karan Singh Grover was looking after me all the time. My mom would say, ‘Kitna acchha pati mila hai’-Bipasha Basu

Hot mom at 43, Bipasha Basu speaks to mid-day, husband Karan Singh Grover in tow, about body confidence and changing their lives to welcome a manifestation of love
Aastha Atray Banan (MID-DAY; August 21, 2022)
“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love showered on us since we revealed the pregnancy. It was a safer timeline for us [to announce it closer to delivery date]; our doctor advised it,” says actor Bipasha Basu, who announced her pregnancy on Instagram with husband Karan Singh Grover last week. Few days later, she shared a funny video saying, “There’s a baby in my belly”.
Dressed in a white shirt, Basu is resplendent at 43, and full of glee. “I am not 20,” she says, “It’s a late pregnancy, and [I] couldn’t announce it. You have to love yourself, no matter what your body type is—I am so big, but I find it cute. It’s magical what’s happening inside. We let the news out late as we had to be responsible. But once it was out there, we were in tears because everyone gave us so much love…”
“You had tears, I was fine!” pipes in Grover, “I was having different kinds of explosions inside my body.” Basu laughs, “Karan is a softy. He was in tears as well. We let our larger family know—the fans, the media...”
We chatted with the couple over Zoom on Thursday evening, and they seem in high spirits. Basu, whom we know from movies such as Dhoom and Bachna Ae Haseeno, and Grover, who is a TV regular in shows such as Qubool Hai, got married six years ago.
Basu keeps the delivery date under wraps, saying only that it will be soon. “I think Karan is going to be the best father ever,” she gushes. “He lives life from his heart; he’s creative, affectionate and warm… I want those qualities in my child.” “Sometimes, leading with the heart is not a good thing,” Grover quips.
But it’s good that his heart has been in charge; he’s been a hands-on partner, looking after Basu during the first few months of pregnancy, which were excruciating.
“No one talks about how horrible it can be,” the former model says. “It’s not morning sickness, its all-time sickness. I was vomiting all day; It was as if I was possessed. I used to look up at God and shout ‘why are you doing this?’ Karan was looking after me all the time. My mom was relaxed. ‘Kitna acchha pati mila hai,’ she would say.”
It got so bad at one point that Grover asked Basu whether she wanted to continue suffering. “If a man had to be pregnant, he wouldn’t be able to at all,” he says. “She was so sick. But at least we’re past that stage.”
For now, the expecting parents are busy nesting. When we had interviewed Grover in 2020, about his painting exhibition, he had described Basu as being a very organised person, who looked after everyone.
“She is a very evolved,” he says now, “To be her best possible self is her normal state of flow. I am in awe of how she thinks 20 steps ahead. She has an excel sheet of what the child will need, what products, what brands, the cost... everything organised already.”
It’s Basu’s turn to laugh. “Karan will keep bringing up and joking about the excel sheet, but we need to make sure the baby gets the best of what s/he can.” To which Grover just says, “I am good at groundwork and following instructions. So I’ll just do what she asks me to.”
We ask her about the lifestyle decisions they’ve made to make room for the baby, and Basu replies that since she’s always been a fitness-centric person, no detox routine will be needed.
“The real changes will happen when the baby comes. Karan is being trained to change nappies; he will be good at it,” she says, and Grover cringes. “I once smelt a diaper in a changing room and it’s the smell of hell. But I will do what I have to do,” he resigns. As far as taking a break from work goes, neither will be doing so. “I have been on a break all this while, as it was a sensitive pregnancy. But once the baby comes, baby and mommy will be ready for work. It’s time!”
It is only when Bipasha Basu encouraged me that I took up art seriously-Karan Singh Grover

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; March 31, 2021)
After television and movies, Karan Singh Grover took a plunge into the digital world with the web show, Qubool Hai 2.0 recently. It re-introduced him as Asad Ahmed Khan, the popular character from the television series by the same name. While talking to BT about his successful transition across mediums as an actor, Karan also opened up about his new venture and his passion for art. Excerpts...
Your latest outing, Qubool Hai 2.0 introduced you in an action avatar. Was this change of image a conscious decision by you?
There are many dimensions to me that people are not aware of. I am just happy that with Qubool Hai 2.0, I could showcase an aspect of myself. Besides, the character that I play in this web show is quite different from what I did on the TV show. I have done action and comedy before, but it wasn’t put out there so prominently like they did in this show, which could be the reason why my performance stood out even more.
Another talking point of the show is your chemistry with co-star Surbhi Jyoti, who was also part of the television show. Was it easy to recreate that magic all over again?
I worked a lot on the character of Asad Ahmed Khan and his nuances during the inception of the show in 2012, so much so that character stayed with me through the years. It’s not a healthy thing to keep a character within you for so long, but this is a phenomenon that can be expected with television projects that are shot for a long period of time. So, as soon as Qubool Hai 2.0 came up, Asad was there at the snap of a finger. Since he is shown to be a sharpshooter on the show, I trained for a few days at a shooting range in Mumbai. Interestingly, I was quite good at it and that surprised my coaches. The game of shooting is much in sync with your breathing.
As far as the chemistry between me and Surbhi is concerned, even though our characters, Asad and Zoya, are meeting and falling in love for the first time on the web show, they already have a strong base that was created when we worked together for the first time on TV. You can’t really portray this chemistry, unless you’ve spent time prepping for a character before.
Apart from acting, you are also getting noticed as an artist. The artworks that you post on social media and your website are going viral. Where does this love for painting come from?
The artist was always there within me, but I never explored it. I never took it seriously as I was bad at art when I was in school. When teachers asked me to draw a scenery, I would draw it the way I felt it. Nobody cared about my perspective and would advise me to draw mountains and trees. It is only when Bipasha encouraged me that I took up art seriously. She came across one of my drawings and asked me to explain it. She was surprised when I told her it’s called ‘Dreaming Birth’ as it depicts the soul having already gained its highest potential before entering a womb. She asked me to do more of such work. All of this happened on December 31 in 2015. I remember the day well because that’s the day I proposed to her and asked her to marry me. It was her enthusiasm that motivated me to do my first series called ‘Ascension’. There has been no looking back since. I am not an Arts student, but the more I dabbled in painting, the more I understood it better.
What’s the kind of response you get for your artwork from art lovers and the industry?
The response has been great. I’ve had people comparing my pieces of art with some renowned works of celebrated artists that I can’t name (smiles!). My art is an extension of my personality. I have also been signed on for Aparajita Jain’s online gallery of new contemporary artists from South Asia. A physical exhibition will happen by the end of this year and I am really looking forward to it.
My Coronavirus diagnosis hit Bipasha Basu more than me-Karan Singh Grover

After battling COVID-19 earlier this year, Karan Singh Grover bounces back in the game with Qubool Hai 2.0
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; March 16, 2021)
Despite the short stint on Qubool Hai, Karan Singh Grover had made an impact as Asad Ahmed Khan. Almost nine years later, the actor has found his way back into the universe of the love story as he headlines Qubool Hai 2.0, a spin-off of the Zee drama. “It is a difficult role because the character is the antithesis of my own personality,” he begins. “Asad is exactly like he was; only that he is not an architect, but a world shooting champion. Zoya’s character and family have been altered. The world around them has changed, but viewers will see them meeting for the first time and falling in love.”
With the series graduating from television to an OTT platform, come changes in its format of storytelling. Ask him how different is the web world, and he says, “I am enjoying this space as much as I enjoyed TV. The story and the character are important for me. Here, there is less stress regarding TRPs. We know the plot, and shoot it at a stretch till we reach the finish line. It is a better way to perform and write.”
Shooting for the Zee5 series was not all roses for the actor — on wrapping up the last leg of shooting in Serbia in early January, he tested positive for COVID-19. “We were shooting in zero degrees, and in a particular scene, I was not wearing a jacket. So, I was down with fever for a day. Two days later when we were to go back home, the unit had to do the mandatory testing before flying out. When the test results came, I was diagnosed with the virus. I didn’t show any symptoms except that I had lost my sense of smell for three days. So, I had to stay back till January 9.”
As he fought the infection, the news took an emotional toll on his wife, actor Bipasha Basu. “Bipasha was devastated; she is strong, but she gets scared when it comes to the health of her loved ones. Often, she doesn’t take care of herself, but wants to make sure everyone around her is okay. So, my diagnosis hit her worse than me,” he remembers.
If the pandemic had brought the world to a standstill last year, it also made us reassess our life decisions and priorities. For Grover, a significant fallout of the pandemic was leaving Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2, a show that saw him take centrestage as Mr Bajaj. The actor decided against shooting in the new normal when the unit of the Ekta Kapoor show resumed work. “I didn’t want to go [on a set] and expose my loved ones to a virus that has affected the world so badly. So, I have not done a lot of work because of the current scenario. You have to work for a living, but you can’t do it at the cost of risking your family. I loved the character, the story and of course, Ekta, but we must prioritise our wants.”
Bipasha Basu & I make each other laugh; that’s the best part about us-Karan Singh Grover

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; February 14, 2021)
Does marriage change the way we perceive love? Is Valentine’s Day brutal for singles, what sort of boundaries are essential in relationships and more. It’s the month of love, and we got fab-abs couple Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover, who tied the knot in 2016, to talk all things romantic. Excerpts...
At what point in your relationship did you realise that he’s ‘the one’ and she’s ‘the one’ for me, for life?
Bipasha: We went through a crazy courtship. It was like a film where we were together, then not together, and in and out of the relationship because of family, responsibilities, society. There was this time when I took a strong decision of going away from him. That’s when it hit me hard. I realised that he is the person that I love and can’t do without. Till then, I wasn’t clear. I thought I had lost him and that feeling was a wake-up call. It made me realise that he is my everything. And this is the love story of my life.
Karan: I listen to everyone, but I don’t share what’s going on in my heart easily. I don’t share my innermost feelings with anybody. With her, I was suddenly expressing everything I felt. The connect was organic and this is what we all wait for our whole lives. When you get it and don’t recognise it, you are stupid. I might make a lot of mistakes and I could be silly, but I am not stupid. I recognised it and that made me realise that I love her.
One rarely speaks of married couples on Valentine’s Day. It’s always about fancy proposals, young love and confessions. Married couples aren’t romanticized enough, isn’t it?
Karan: I don’t think that married couples are overlooked on Valentine’s Day. It’s about sharing and celebrating love and not just romance. Romance is a small part of what love truly means. There are many depths and dimensions to love which you understand only after marriage.
Bipasha: All throughout my life, this has been a day when I send flowers to my mother, and my parents have their own celebration. We wish our sisters and have family dinners. It’s a day of love and it’s for the entire family. We don’t make it just about Karan and me.
Does marriage, living with someone and getting too familiar with your partner’s ways, change how we perceive love?
Bipasha: You should not take your partner for granted but there is definitely a sense of comfort that creeps in when you are living together. As a team, you are more chilled out and laid back. You want to watch a movie together at home and eat some great food rather than succumbing to the quintessential idea of romance — candle-light dinners, flowers, etc. The stuff that you see in the movies. Marriage makes you more comfortable with each other.
Karan: And well, that’s not a bad thing. I have not heard anyone complaining, “Oh man! I hate my life because it’s comfortable.” (laughs!)
Sometimes, a day like this isn’t too kind to singles, puts a kind of a pressure on them, too. Did you feel this way when you were single?
Bipasha: I think it’s got something to do with our society. I do have friends and family where single girls sometimes feel that their one big aim is to find a life partner. That’s the way we are often raised. We are made to believe that until we don’t find a life partner, our life is incomplete. That’s flawed. You need to celebrate who you are, your achievements, work, people in your life... everything. I want to tell all the singles that there’s nothing that they need to feel sad about. Just celebrate yourself. I’ve never felt low on V-Day when I was single. I used to pamper myself a lot. My girlfriends and I celebrated Galentine’s Day. There is no dearth of love in life. It doesn’t have to only come from a man for a woman and vice versa. As long as you have love in your life, be it self-love, or family and friends, you have to be grateful for what you have.
Karan: I never felt low on V-Day when I was single either. Lot of people say that they aren’t happy because they haven’t found love. But what needs to change is how you look at yourself. If you like who you are, you will attract people who will love you, too.
We often see love being expressed with diamonds, hearts and roses. But the real joy lies in the smaller things, doesn’t it? What has been the biggest revelation about love for you two over the years?
Bipasha: Diamonds, hearts, roses, balloons… I can never complain about them. I love it all and Karan is well aware of that. He has surprised me with all these lovely gestures, but it all would mean nothing if there wasn’t love behind it. I know that he loves me to death. The intention is what matters more, and yes, the real joy lies in the smaller things like remembering what the other person likes. He writes poems for me. He packages it in a lovely scroll. We are khadadus. We eat everything. I make cakes and desserts for us. We play Ludo together. We pine for each other when we are away and happy when reunited. We have been together for six-and-a-half years and it has always been this way.
Karan: We are quite lame! Even if I am painting or doing something upstairs in our house and we haven’t seen each other for hours, we video call each other to say, ‘I miss you’. This is true. We both are romantic at heart and we both are vocal about it. She is funny and we can make each other laugh and that’s the best part about our relationship.
What is the biggest love myth that people shouldn’t fall for?
Bipasha: You often hear people saying that, ‘work on your marriage, work on your relationship’, but it has been quite effortless for us. There’s a connect. There’s no effort that we need to take to make our marriage better or keep the spark alive. We have a strong foundation of friendship and that is integral to love. As Karan said before, ‘Romance is just a small part of what love truly means’. I love biryani, but if you keep it in front of me and Karan isn’t eating, it won’t taste that good! Over the years, I have realised that Karan will first say ‘no’ to everything and then say ‘yes’.
Karan: That is true. If I am not around or I am not eating something, she won’t enjoy it either. I honestly keep trying to be better for her because she is perfect at everything she does!
Have you set any boundaries about what not to say during an argument, when things go sour?
Bipasha: There are disagreements, but there are ways to communicate. Screaming and shouting is not a solution, we never say hurtful or nasty things to each other. Never forget the respect you have for the person. I don’t like abusive words.
Karan: Yes, refrain from using abusive words when there’s a disagreement. Talk it out.
Who among the two apologizes first when there’s a fight and how important is it to be forgiving in a relationship?
Karan: The person who is wrong should apologize. That person in this relationship is always me because Bipasha is always right. And I am not exaggerating. It’s true that she is never wrong and it’s frustrating. I apologize whenever we fight because it is always my fault. I tell myself that don’t make the same mistakes, make different mistakes and apologize (laughs!).
Bipasha: It is important to be forgiving in relationships because you can’t keep dragging things. In our case, Karan makes more mistakes (laughs!). But yes, if a person has understood what he/she has done wrong, there’s no point bringing it up. Having said that, an apology is useless if the same mistake is repeated and it becomes an excuse. I detest the word sorry. I believe it was invented by people who were looking for an easy way out. Karan knows I hate that word and it’s always been this way.
Karan: Yes, I don’t say sorry to her. I say hello (laughs!) .
When I talk too much of spiritual stuff, I can see a screensaver go up on Bipasha Basu's face-Karan Singh Grover

Karan Singh Grover, currently popular as Mr Bajaj on Kasautii Zindagii Kay, is now showing his spiritual side through his paintings
Aastha Atray Banan (MID-DAY; March 8, 2020)
If you follow actor Karan Singh Grover on Instagram, you are bound to believe that his life is one big party—either with wife Bipasha Basu, or with friends, or when he is at work playing the iconic character of Mr Bajaj on Kasautii Zindagii Kay. You will also learn that he is a fitness freak, with that amazingly muscular body. But, there is an another side to him, not talked about, that will soon make its debut. The actor has been sketching and painting for three years, and his first exhibition, Star Infinity, will be on show starting March 18 at India Fine Art Gallery in Mumbai.
When we meet him on the terrace of his Santa Cruz home to talk art, we end up talking about more. It's clear that his freewheeling nature doesn't just reflect in his art pieces, but also in his thoughts. When we ask him when he started painting, he quips, "today?" Then laughs. He has just given made the finishing touches to a piece called Aurora Borealis (also known as the Northern Lights), and says, "It's only recently that I have taken it up seriously. But while at school, I was interested in art. But the teachers wanted us to make the sunrise and the mountains in a typical way, and if I said I wanted to draw how the sunshine makes me feel, they'd say, 'who wants to know that?' So I decided to keep my stuff to myself." But on December 31, 2016, he drew something called Dream in Birth, and Basu said, "It's good. Do more."
And so, he did.
His work ranges from neon-drenched portrayals of archangels to swirlings, inspired by signs and symbols that appear to him in visions. "Abstract is mostly when there is no form to things. I asked the gallery what I could define my art as, and they said 'why would you want to'?" he says with a warm smile, that he breaks into frequently during the interview. His art is also a direct reflection of his spiritual side, and so, the conversation steers effortlessly there. He says he now knows colours and dimensions, but it's obviously his thought process that most affects his creations.
"Star Infinity is the symbol of an artist. I got it, not from space or anything. It came to me. As I was making Raphael [the archangel], I ended up drawing star infinity. I researched it, as I had never seen it. There was an explanation of the world Israel. 'Is' is the mind, 'Ra' is the body and 'El' is a symbol which refers to the divine within. I don't know why it came to me, but it's now my symbol," he says. His first sketch was a womb where the foetus is being formed. The soul hasn't entered it yet. It is at this point that Grover believes, the person is dreaming about his highest intention in life. The second was Step Into Galaxy 2, "because we are not born in this galaxy. I was born into a galaxy with two stars, and I travelled here. It sounds kind of weird, right?"
When we assure him that we are believers of the Harry Potter line "Just because it's in your head Harry, doesn't mean it's not real", he smiles, "Exactly. The universe is mental, and we are creating it as we go along."
Ever since he was a kid, Grover believed there was something more to this existence. "We can't see it because of our own limitations. But once you start seeing it, it's everywhere. It all started when I read The Alchemist. And when I was open to it, a lot of information just came to me." He also credits educators Dr Joe Dispenza and Bruce Lipton, pioneers in epigenetics, for the direction. "I was a very different person 10 years ago. You can only understand [the change] when you are privy to feeling some kind of high emotion, like love or happiness. I don't connect with the person I used to be."
For now, he is busy living his life as the luckiest man on earth, thanks to the love he shares with Basu. "I told Bipasha the other day, do you know, I have a website, and she said, 'Yes. I got it made for you.' I got so much in dahej without asking for it. She has the best of everything in her—she is sometimes sorted and practical, and at times, a child. When I talk too much of the spiritual stuff, I can see a screensaver go up on her face."
He seems sorted himself—gets up at 5 am, after four hours of sleep which is preceded by daily meditation. After his workout, he works for nine hours daily, be it on a show set, or on his art. Ask him what he prefers, actor or artist and he laughs, "I have too many me-s inside me, so they take over when they have to. But, I am excited for people to see this side. Even the acting is an art. For me, it's all art. Either I am performing it, or I am creating it."

Love and friendship go very well together-Bipasha Basu on Karan Singh Grover

Bipasha Basu Singh Grover and Karan Singh Grover open up about their relationship after four years of marriage
Titas Chowdhury (HINDUSTAN TIMES; February 15, 2020)
Bipasha Basu Singh Grover and Karan Singh Grover spent Valentine’s Day walking the ramp together at a fashion show in Mumbai, which was a first for them. What followed was “a cute plan” and then the couple flew to Colombo, Sri Lanka to celebrate the day where they graced a special event.
As the duo celebrated their fourth Valentine’s Day after they tied the knot, Bipasha says that their love has evolved with time. “For us, it just becomes stronger with each passing day. We don’t need a special day to tell each other how special we are for one another. We make sure that we make the other person feel special every day. I know for a fact that we say ‘I love you’ and ‘I’m so grateful for you’ to each other, every day, without planning it,” she says.
Karan says that he shares an unbending equation with Bipasha and believes that. “Love, for me, is the truth of life. It’s the most special and the highest emotion. It’s something that cannot be destroyed because it connects us,” he says.
For Bipasha, it’s an “inseparable” bond that she shares with her husband. She says, “The best part is that we’re enough for each other and we don’t need a third person for entertainment. We spend a lot of time with each other and have a blast. We both are in sync about that. Our friendship is getting stronger each day because we’re evolving.”
The Dum Maro Dum (2011) actor believes that it’s their profound friendship that has intensified their love over the years. “Love is a deep bond. Friendship needs to be its foundation. Love and friendship go very well together and that’s the bond that I share with my husband,” she says.
Ask Karan about their first date and he shares, “It’s strange when I think of our love story. We didn’t really have our first date as such (laughs). Every time we went out, we went out with our close friends. So, there was never a moment where we told each other that let’s go for a date. Today, every dinner that I’ve with her is a date, even if it’s at home.”
I channelised my anger in a positive and creative way-Karan Singh Grover

Karan Singh Grover on creating 30 paintings, 15 of which will be displayed in an exhibition soon, with a little nudge from actress-wife Bipasha Basu
Hiren Kotwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 3, 2020)
After graduating from TV to films in 2015, Karan Singh Grover forayed into music as a lyricist-singer of original EDM songs with the stage name ‘Vanar’ over two years ago. Now, he has found a new passion. Last week, he shared a video of himself painting. “Over the last three years my freedom of expression has brought me here... Very soon I will be exhibiting my labour of love to all,” he announced.
According to Karan, it started with a “random drawing” a few years ago. “It was more of a doodle. When I was done, Bipasha (Basu, actress-wife) asked what it was, and I said it’s a dreaming bird. Before the soul comes into the body, you see the highest dream of life, what God has planned for you. She told me I should draw more often,” he says.
The journey began with black ink. The actor called his first series, comprising seven paintings on paper, ‘Ascension’, after which he graduated to canvas with acrylic and spray paints, creating a second series, ‘Step in the Galaxy Too’. “I’m not an art student, so there are no limitations of what to use and how,” he shares, adding that being self-taught lets him explore colours and canvases.
By Karan’s own admission, the ‘Evolution’ series was borne out of anger. “I had a huge fight with someone and was in a terrible mood; it was like fighting the urge to break or destroy something. My house is too beautiful to do that, so I couldn’t vent. Instead, I took a big sheet of paper and spray-painted black in the centre. I channelised my anger in a positive and creative way,” he recalls.
He recently showed his work to a gallery for a potential exhibition and was told that he could call it free art. “The idea for the exhibition (for which 15 out of his 30 paintings will be showcased) came about when they saw my paintings after a year,” says Karan, adding that it was because of Bipasha that he started painting and kept at it. “She says I have a style.”
Karan is quick to add that acting hasn’t taken a backseat and that he recently completed work on his next. “I wake up at 5 am, train for an hour and half, and start painting by 8:30 am. Even when I’m shooting, I try to paint daily because a curator, who had seen my work, told me that if you’re an artist, you must draw every day,” he signs off.
Meeting Bipasha Basu has been a huge turning point-Karan Singh Grover

Karan Singh Grover, who recently rang in his three year anniversary with Bipasha, says it is a blessing to be married to the actor
Titas Chowdhury (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 25, 2019)
Actor Karan Singh Grover has recently finished 15 years in the entertainment industry. Karan, who started his acting career with Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi (2004), became a household name with television soaps such as Dill Mill Gayye and Qubool Hai. Looking back at his “delightful” journey, he fondly says, “My fifteen years in the industry have been quite eventful. I learnt so much and I’m still learning. I’ve had no strategy as such. From an artiste’s point of view, you’ve to make sure that you do your best in everything, regardless of the medium.”
Ask him about his biggest turning point, and the 37-year-old actor excitedly shares, “Meeting Bipasha and being with her has been a huge turning point for me.”
Karan and Bipasha Basu Singh Grover, who met on the sets of their 2015 film Alone, tied the knot in 2016. They celebrated their three year anniversary recently and Karan couldn’t help but sing praises of his lady love. “Being married to her is a blessing. She’s the kind of person who takes care of everyone’s needs before they even know that they need it. She has a big heart. Just being around her has changed me. She makes you want to connect with yourself. I feel I’m a better person now,” he smiles.
Marriage, however, hasn’t stopped his female fans from showering him with love and adulation. “If my female fan following is growing by the minute, it’s a great achievement. Bipasha and I checked the insights on my Instagram. We found out that the ratio of the male and female followers on my handle is 50:50, which is awesome. To get such unconditional love from people who don’t know you personally is a gift from God,” says a flattered Karan.

Karan Singh Grover was missing in action for over three years but now is back with a bang on TV with the Kasautii Zindagii Kay (KZK) reboot and at the same time has forayed onto the digital platform with Boss: Baap Of Special Services. While he plays Rishabh Bajaj in KZK — the role earlier essayed by Ronit Roy — in the web series he portrays a cop. When asked what kept him away from small-screen for so long, he says, “There wasn’t any particular reason. I was busy with the shoot of my two films, which will release soon. I was also engrossed with painting and that took quite a lot of my time.” Does he feel nostalgic about KZK, considering he was a part of the original serial, too? “No, the show is different though the story line is still the same. And, playing the character of Rishabh Bajaj is quite a big deal. Even people who didn’t watch TV then knew who Bajaj was.”
About his web outing he explains that as a cop, he has a different way of dealing with crime and solving cases. “He looks at things from a criminal’s perspective and this gives him an edge over other police officers,” he says. Ask him if there is any difference between shooting for the small screen and the digital platform and he says, “For artistes, the way we perform doesn’t change irrespective of the medium. The way we are shown on the platform changes. I like to pick up projects, which are different and do justice to characters I am playing. That is the only thing that grabs my attention and I make sure that nothing collides ever.”
Talking about how life has transformed after marrying Bipasha Basu, the Qubool Hai actor says everything has changed. “Life has a new meaning. It is more beautiful than I could ever imagine. Everything is sorted. She is a master at sorting it down (laughs). Everything is well organised, that’s how a happy life should be. Bipasha and I have completed a film together called Aadat and will be releasing later this year,” he signs off

Harshada Rege (DNA; February 14, 2019)Bipasha Basu enjoys celebrating occasions in a grand manner and her husband Karan Singh Grover never fails to impress her. The couple, who tied the knot in 2016, doesn’t shy away from displaying their love for each other in personal life as well as on social media. On Valentine’s Day, they talk about the personality trait they consciously changed for their spouse and what’s remained constant over the years. Over to the much-in-love jodi...
It’s been three years to your marriage. How do you keep the romance alive?
KARAN SINGH GROVER: By telling each other how much we love each other as many times as we can.
BIPASHA BASU: Yes, it’s necessary to tell your partner that he or she is important in your life. We make each other feel special. That’s how you can keep the romance alive. You should never take your partner for granted.
What’s your journey been like over the last three years?
KSG: The journey of getting to know each other every day has been great. Loving each other through different kinds of experiences and learning a lot of things about ourselves is so much fun.
BB: Ditto!
Both of you are fitness enthusiasts. Has a common passion contributed towards strengthening the bond?
BB: It does help. One good thing about our fitness enthusiasm is that we can spend that time with each other. It’s like following the passion that we love together!
KSG: Yes, it’s like a movement towards keeping yourself fit. This also means giving respect to your body and the right kind of treatment it needs. When you do it with your partner, it will obviously contribute to strengthening the bond.
Do either of you ever get lazy to go to the gym?
KSG: No, we never get lazy to hit the gym.
BB: We have to actually stop ourselves from going to the gym when we are unwell. We have to tell each other why we should not train on that particular day and give our body some rest. That happens pretty often (laughs).
What is the one thing that has remained constant over the last three years?
BB: Our love for each other is not just constant, but also growing every day. Respect for each other is the other. Start your foundation on the basis of respect for the human being that you are. Respect the person you are falling in love with.
KSG: We are quite crazy. We both love food. That’s a kind of constant — our love for each other and food.
BB: That’s a lie! You were never a foodie before you met me.
KSG: Being married to you for three years now, I am one.
BB: Well, yes, then both of us are foodies now!
What traits have you consciously changed for your spouse?
KSG: I am not late anymore.
BB: Yes, be it work or personal stuff, he’s always on time now. I have learnt to be more patient. I like everything being done fast. I do understand that we are two different individuals.
KSG: Yes, absolutely!
Are there any special Valentine’s Day memories that you can share?
BB: We have many beautiful memories. There was one when we went to Ananda (near Rishikesh). That was extremely special because we had an amazing time there. Another year, he took my entire family for dinner. When we came back, he had got the terrace done up with red balloons, decorations and everything that I like. It was a beautiful surprise for me because I am quite childlike. I love celebrations, occasions and everything, that too, in a big and glamorous way. Also, he writes me poetry and a note in his beautiful handwriting every Valentine’s Day. I frame all these handwritten notes because those are close to my heart and nobody has ever done that for me.
KSG: She makes yummy custards. So, last year she made my favourite custard for Valentine’s Day.
What are the plans for V-Day this year?
KSG: We are going to eat some great food for sure!
BB: I can’t disclose our plans, but it’s definitely going to be one of the most special days.

I am strong but I wish I was more flexible, like Karan Singh Grover-Bipasha Basu

The fittest couple of B’town, Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover, tells us why every couple should take up at least one physical activity together to keep their romance alive
Deebashree Mohanty (BOMBAY TIMES; January 28, 2018)
Define wellness...
Bipasha: It’s a state of being. It’s about the choices we make in our lives every day. It could be about the food we eat, the activities we indulge in, the mental happiness we seek... so on and so forth. Every step we take through the day should be a choice towards wellness. Choosing the right thing for your mind and body should be everyone’s priority.
Karan: Wellness begins by understanding our own selves, and not mindlessly falling for fad diets. Instead, try to get to know your own body. Be aware of what your body wants, how you feel about your body.
Does working out together help keep the romance alive?
Bips: It’s not as if we train on the same schedule at the same time. We do our own routines but we often cross each other’s path. He sometimes winks at me, and I smile. We give each other a peck, and sometimes, I also kick him a little bit on the butt.
Karan: A workout is the highest level of quality time that you can spend with yourself and if you are sharing that with your partner, the romance doubles.
This sounds exciting. Tell us more...
Bips: I love spending time with my husband. To find a partner in sync with me when it comes to our outlook towards fitness is Godsend. And we both do it effortlessly, not because it is something we have to do.
Karan: Well, I can check out my hot wife all the time while working out. That’s a good thing!
Give us a peek into your workout schedule...
Bips: There is nothing fixed about what we do every day; what is certain is that we have to sweat it out. Sometimes, we push ourselves so much that we end up with ice packs on our knees and back. But in the end, we laugh aloud, and we’re good.
Karan: We get so carried away while training at times that you’d wonder if we are athletes training for the next world championships. I tell Bipasha that it’s like we are training for the end of the world – where it is my responsibility to save each and every person on Earth! But jokes apart, this is what we love doing and we love doing it together. As for training, we mix it up... Cardio, weights, intense training and yoga!
So a healthy body makes a fit mind?
Bips: It’s simple. If you are healthy, there’s no battle between your mind and body. It’s like you are actually in a happy state. That’s why I firmly believe investing in your body and mind is a necessity. But some people don’t get this. They constantly crib that they don’t have time to de-stress or work out. They don’t understand that if they manage to be healthy, they are going to happily handle the rest of their lives.
Karan: It’s a misnomer that happiness is somewhere outside of you. It’s within you. Only when you are truly healthy, can you spread cheer around you.
Any specific fitness goal for 2018? Anything new that you’d like to try?
Bips: Both of us have very strong fitness goals for 2018. Mine started from January 8, post my birthday. The last six months, we have been enjoying our cheat meals. A lot of it thanks to my mother who keeps feeding us all the time. I dabble in all kinds of training but this year, I want to be more serious about yoga. Somehow, I have always let go somewhere in the middle. Karan, on the other hand, is a total ashtangi. I want to reach maybe 40% of Karan’s fitness levels. I am a strong girl. But in terms of flexibility, I wish I could be more like him.
What other activities do you both enjoy? Do you both cook or do you like doing up the house?
Bips: I cannot paint or sing like him. Karan is the dreamer and I am practical. I love organising things while he can just sit and look around. The other thing we love doing together is spending quality time with family and doing pedicures together. Karan roams around barefoot so his feet are as dirty as they can get. Pedicure is an absolute must. Although he complains. He keeps saying... ‘Am I your girlfriend?’
Karan: I know it will sound like a cliché but we really do complete each other. We are an interesting mix! I make eggs for her and she makes me custard on Sundays. But our chef at home is so good that we don’t really want to try any other ‘haath ka khana’.
Individually, what have you learnt from each other after marriage? What have you learnt about yourself since they say living with someone under the same roof teaches us more about ourselves.
Bips: I need to be inspired by my partner and I am lucky that Karan inspires me. He is very spiritual and has a very pure heart. If you spend time with him, you will feel his positive energy. In today’s time it’s very difficult to find a man like him. I call him Mowgli because he has no materialistic attachments. He is totally non fussy; you give him anything to eat, he will eat. He’s very easy to live with. I try to be as spiritual as him. What I have learnt about myself after marriage is that I can be quite determined if I set my eyes on something.
Karan: What I have learned about myself is that I am really very sensitive and that it is not a bad thing. I used to think it is not manly to be so sensitive about little things but now I care a damn about what people may think about my nature. What I have learnt from Bipasha is to value time and do everything at the soonest. Every delay causes another delay. And what I have learnt about women in general is that it is impossible to do the stuff they can. And men should stop trying to compete.
What’s your wellness playlist like?
Bips: I listen to the UK Billboards top 50.
Karan: Believe it or not, I listen to a lot of Krishna Das’s devotional music. It acts as a stress buster. I also listen to loud thumping music when my workout is at its peak.
Q. Workout outfits...How essential is it to get comfy while exercising?
Bips: When I train, I am all over the place. I feel very cold in the gym, so I prefer full tights and a vest. The brand is very important.
Karan: If I have to go to a gym outside my home, I wear a jacket and loose pyjamas. At home, I work out in my under pants!

Karan Singh Grover & I love expressing love. We are goofs. We are lame-Bipasha Basu

Trolls may have a field day going after Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover’s shenanigans on screen and social media. The two, however, say they know no other way to be
Kusumita Das (MID-DAY; October 29, 2017)
When Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover stepped into a Bandra eatery for this interview, it was refreshing to not see them flanked by their managers. They find this writer waiting at a table, greetings are exchanged, orders are placed after a mutual exchange of notes on our favourite smoothie, and just like that, without a formal ‘start’ signal, we realise we are five minutes into the conversation.
Their unassuming demeanour takes a little getting used to. But then, almost everything Basu and Grover do appears so. They steer clear from industry parties and brandish their love on social media, making them the least private celeb couple we know.
Now, with the latest condom commercial they have shot for, they have become the first married couple to have endorsed such a brand. “Why can’t a married couple endorse condoms? Just because you are married does not mean you have no responsibility towards your partner,” Basu says. “We can’t use sex as a dirty word. We wished that the conversation moved from sensuality to planned pregnancy, protection from STDs, and of course, loving your woman. Who talks about this in this country?”
The ad was offered to them soon after they were married, and the decision to star in it was mutual. But they waited till they were sure the communication was fine-tuned to convey what they wanted to say. Call them an evolved couple, and Basu rolls her eyes. “You know, Karan loves to use that word for us. But, we are what we are. I love taking photos and sharing them. My friends call me a ‘Japanese tourist’. I have been like that since I was a little girl.” “You are still a little girl,” Grover says, landing a peck on her cheek. A slightly conscious Basu then smiles and says, “We love expressing love. We are goofs. We are lame.” Karan has his own theory on this. “When you are acting, you get to be someone else anyway. Why be so, at other times.”
Edited excerpts from the interview:
On intimacy
Basu: We shared great chemistry and, even while shooting this ad, Karan looked like he was on holiday. He was in the pool all day, and each time the shot was ready, we had to beg him to come out.
Grover: I am getting paid to get into the pool and make out with my hot wife! What do you expect?
Basu: He was always into the moment.
Grover: I am always into you!
Basu: I don’t think the ad is steamy, per say. It just shows our playfulness. We did not need a director’s instructions. That’s how we are when we are together anyway. It was comforting to have my husband with me. One thing’s for sure — we would not have done this ad with another co-star.
A physical and a non-physical trait you are attracted to in each other?
Basu: Physical would be the whole package. Non-physical would be his heart. He has a golden heart, and he will hate me for saying this, but he is more sensitive than me.
Grover: You are not supposed to say these things in public.
Basu: I need to keep his macho image going.
Grover: I like her eyes, if I had to choose.
Basu: Why don’t you tell her what you really like? I’m the most ungraceful person, and that’s what he can’t get over.
Grover: Let me explain. So, you see her working out in the gym, so hot and sexy, and then she just comes out and sits and talks in the most ungraceful manner (makes a face)
Basu (laughs): I said to him last evening, I am like a Parsi aunty at home, who likes to just lounge in her nightie.
On social media
Basu: I had to convince him to get on it. He’s not a poser, unlike me. After the first shot, he starts making faces.
Grover: I don’t even understand the art of taking photos — lighting, cropping. I don’t understand what to do with myself in photos, that’s why I make faces. But, I’m learning, and I’m better now.
On trolls
Grover: Really? People troll me? Like they say bad things?
Basu: The negativity is little when compared to the love we get back. Yes, people can be brutal, but does it bother us? No. Social media is a great tool but you need nerves of steel to deal with the criticism that it can draw. If our friends, normal couples post their cosy moments on social media, why can’t we? And why does it have to be seen as a ‘brave’ act?
Grover: Celebs are private because they fear judgment.
Basu: It’s hard to read the mind of trolls, but we do feel sad for them.
On consent and #MeToo
Basu: When it’s a crime like rape or sexual assault, that is horrific and one obviously doesn’t know what to do. But when you can make a choice, you cannot be the victim. I have never taken this much sh** from anyone in the industry. I have lost out on stuff but I have slept in peace.
Grover: But then you are a strong woman.
Basu: No, I was only 15 when I started. But, I made tough choices to stand up for myself and not be the victim.
Grover: If you don’t respect what the other person wants, sexually or otherwise, then that’s weird. Nothing that follows then, is real. I am not sure what exactly this campaign is achieving, but at least people are coming out and sharing stuff.
On socializing
Basu: He sleeps at 10.30 pm, wakes up at 5 am. How can we party?
Grover: We have also never understood what happens in these parties. Yes, people network. I say, boss, that’s never going to happen for us.
Basu: We only go when we are well rested, and of course, most often to honour an invitation, say thank you.
On dealing with the past
Grover: Whatever life that was, good or bad, it brought me to her. Now, my real life has begun.
Basu: I have had my share of sadness, and I needed this storm of laughter and happiness, someone looking after me. Initially, I was like, ‘is this really happening to me?’ I never had anyone looking after me.
Grover: When I told my parents about her, my dad said, ‘beta, tumhara toh sab kuch wrong hai, how did you manage this?’ If you judge me by what has happened in my life, that’s not good. I chose not to live a lie. That is hard to do.
Basu: You need to give a person a chance. Initially, my parents did not like him. And now, they are so fond of him. Mum says, ‘Yeh mera beta, tu meri bahu!’ He’s the fish-eating, conch-shell playing damaad they had thought they’d never have.
On starting a family
Basu: He’s great with children and I love kids too, but I don’t think we are ready yet.
Grover: Children should never be a mistake, that is also one thing we want to communicate through the ad. Planned pregnancy is crucial. We’ll get there when the time is right.
She is always right, says Karan Singh Grover while Bipasha Basu thinks he's a quirky guy

Days after their first marriage anniversary, Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover tell us what they’ve learned about each other
Upala KBR (DNA; May 2, 2017)
Bipasha Basu finds husband Karan Singh Grover to be a great partner. After a year of being together as husband and wife, that’s something that hasn’t changed. She finds his being over-sensitive annoying, he hates it that she’s always right. Those are things boyfriends and girlfriends say about each other. They pick up after each other. She manages his money, he knows how to end an argument/fight by saying sorry. And she’s protective while he’s possessive. We could tell you more but why not make it more fun by letting them tell it as it is. Here’s the conversation we had with the year-old pati-patni who are still very much in love..
What’s the most annoying habit of the other that you would want to change?
Bipasha: Karan’s a quirky guy. I got my man and this is what for me is the mark of a true man. But what annoys me? He’s very sensitive. Sensitivity is a great thing. But he’s too sensitive...
KSG: You’re annoyed by that? It goes with the person I am. I’m so hurt!
Bipasha: Yes and I am okay with that. I don’t want you to change that. Sensitivity is a great thing, but Karan is too sensitive.
KSG: Things can hurt me very quickly… but only things Bipasha would say, not anybody else.
Bipasha: And with a moophat person like me, it’s tough on Karan. I am very dry. My straightforward manner is not sugar-coated ever. I am definitely very blunt, but I don’t mean that. His heart is so soft that he gets hurt.
KSG: It’s soft for you. I understand what she’s saying once I process what she says. I have to analyse it. The most annoying thing about her is that she’s always right. It’s tough to be in a fight where you know that the other person is always right, no matter what and you are spending the rest of your life with her (Bipasha laughs). No matter how angry or upset you get in your head and heart you know that she’s right. I like to be right sometimes (looking at Bipasha). She’s very particular about always being on time.
Bipasha: So much so, I have sent him to places early and he’s roaming around. I’m very edgy about timings.
KSG: Unfortunately, there’s a never-ending fire lit under my behind. For an award show, she sent me 15 minutes before it started and I had to wait in a restaurant! That’s not fair.
Bipasha: See that’s how he makes me laugh so much... By talking baaje-baaje kotha bole (nonsense) all the time. He can understand and talk fluently in Bengali now. He loves the word chulkuni (itching).
KSG: She’s very romantic too. She bought me the best jacket in the world and made dinner for me. She got me this amazing international brand which takes a lot of time to be delivered.
Bipasha: The courier guy gave it to him. It was to be a surprise. His eyes lit up and he didn’t take it off till night, that too he did, because I told him to or he would have kept wearing it (laughs). You don’t know how he is with clothes. I can’t let him destroy the jacket in his sleep. We are very different in that way. He has to use it then and keep using it. He’s like a big kid. Another quirky trait is he’s over-generous.
That’s wonderful...
Bipasha: Not at all! (laughs) My job has increased now!
KSG: That’s why she takes all the money from my account and puts them in fixed deposits. Like hai hi nahin, kya karega abhi?
Bipasha: All his investments are locked straight as it comes. I am all for helping people, but he’s helped a lot of useless people in his entire life. Money for him is nothing. If someone needs it, he gives it away. But he’s changed now a little bit.
Who is the problem solver?
KSG: We don’t have problems, but fights and we get engrossed too much in that, so we take turns.
Bipasha: If there’s a problem or complication including finance or the family, then I solve it.
KSG: And she starts it again by saying, ‘Don’t say sorry. I hate sorry!’ She has no place for a word like sorry in her life so she doesn’t like to use it or hear it.
Bipasha: Sorry was made for people who need excuses in their lives.
KSG: Next time we have an argument instead of saying sorry, I will say ‘I am so Lulu!’ (laughs) I take the big decisions in life, like, ‘Who will go to war with China or Pakistan?’ I have learned this from my father-in-law. He told me, ‘Hamara dono biwi na... fire hai! Tum usske saath thoda thanda rehna. Tum water sign na, aag ke upar paani daal dena. No problem.’ One day, I saw Bipasha and her mom fighting and it was like this tandaav happening! Her dad and I kept looking at each other. His sarcasm and humour is something else.
Do you do stuff without telling each other?
Bipasha: Like work stuff, maybe, but not often. We keep our work separate unless we have deals which come to both of us. That’s the only time we discuss. When he asks me to read scripts or listen to narrations, I say no, because he is a very bad narrator to me!
KSG: You do stuff without telling me? I would like to clear this out. This is her perception of things. Her work is separate. My work goes through her and then comes to me. Somehow everyone who is managing my work first goes to her...
Bipasha: If he’s not answering his phone, they call me to pass on a message.
KSG: Now they don’t call me at all. Any work I do, I always check with her first as she gives good advice. Where scripts are concerned, I come back and tell her all excited and she looks at me and says, ‘I don’t know what you are so excited about but it’s crap!’
Of the two of you, who is more possessive?
Bipasha: I have my moments, but Karan is more possessive between the two of us. He keeps telling me, ‘She’s mine. All mine.’ and he wants me to keep saying it. ‘You are all mine? Only mine’. And I have to say ‘Yes, I am yours. Forever’.
KSG: She is more protective than possessive. Till a few days before our marriage, she couldn’t say the word ‘husband’. She would stammer!

Karan Singh Grover on workouts, diets, how marriage to Bips helped him stay fit
Upala KBR (DNA; March 25, 2017)
Karan Singh Grover (and Bipasha Basu’s other half) is one of the most good-looking men in B-Town, but he would rather be known for being a national-level athlete, and his secret workouts that makes one strong in body and mind. What is the secret behind his hot bod? Find out…
Treat your body right
The trick to maintaining it is persistence and dedication. Also, watching what you eat and having a healthy lifestyle does help too. Fitness, for me, is a lifestyle choice. It really is a choice you have to make some time in your life. You have to either choose to be fit and adapt it as a way of life or choose to be unfit. It’s more about how you treat your body than how you look. How you look is a by-product of how you live your life.
Combination workouts
My workout consists of a combination of weight training, calisthenics and yoga (ashtanga). There are three days a week that I only practice ashtanga.
Diet rotations
I try to maintain a diet that has high protein, high fibre and moderate or low carbs. The trick is to not let your body get used to one particular diet or exercise.
School sportsman
I was an athlete in school and indulged in outdoor sports. I did play basketball, volleyball and squash but my main area of interest was track and field. I won the gold medal in shot-put five consecutive years in school. I don’t get the time to play any sport now but I do swim whenever I have the time.
Blessed to have Bips
Post marriage my workout routine has not changed at all. It’s really a blessing from the universe to have a partner like Bipasha. In more ways than I can say. It really does help a lot when your partner follows a lifestyle similar to your own. We often share new knowledge attained by either of us on new kinds of workouts and diets.
Giving marathons a shot
I’ve never run a marathon but I would definitely like to give it a shot. I do know of the DNA iCan Half Marathon. I think it’s a great initiative.
Bipasha Basu & I didn't party in Bali. We are young looking, old people-Karan Singh Grover

Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 21, 2016)
After honeymooning in
Maldives in May, newly weds Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover who are
self-confessed water babies took off to Bali on a whim two months later
for some quality time together. Bali is a popular tourist destination
known for its dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking and
music. With a population of 4,225,000 according to the January 2014
census, the island is home to most of Indonesia's Hindu minority. Over
to Karan for an insider's account...

GOING THE YOGA WAY
Both Bipasha and I are fitness enthusiasts. There were days when I would feel too lazy to go for a workout, but Bipasha never missed out on a gym routine and that would motivate me to swing along. I'm so glad my wife is like this; I wouldn't want it any other way. Even in Bali we'd wake up early and begin our day with yoga and meditation. We had a tutor at the luxury resort in Sayan to guide us through our yoga and meditation routine. We lived by the river Ayung near the forest and would take off on long walks in the lush green woods. It was beautiful! We tried aerial yoga at our hotel in Jimbaran. It's an unusual exercise, which involved two thick sheets, which are turned into ropes to swing from. We hadn't attempted it earlier. It was intense but great fun!

OF SUNSET CRUISES AND STAR-GAZING
Also, since we're both water babies and the Jimbaran resort is by the
beach, we spent most of our time at the beach and in the pool. I am a
Piscean and given an opportunity, I can stay in the water all the time.
We
went on a sunset cruise with amazing music and champagne on board.
The champagne was wasted on us because neither of us drinks alcohol.
Another
amazing dinner was at a rooftop
restaurant in Sayan with great music and a telescope to watch the stars.
Unfortunately for us, the sky wasn't too clear that night so we didn't
get to do much star-gazing. But it was still; a memorably serene evening
and
we gorged on some amazing Malay food. I love their roti-canai and mutton
curry.
Whenever we travel, we make sure to try the local cuisine. One of our most memorable Indonesian meals was the Murtabak which is a stuffed panfried bread with layers of egg and kheema.
My personal favourite is Nasi Goreng, a rice-based dish with skewers of
chicken and fried eggs on top. Basically, it's their version of
biriyani and I gorge on it whichever part of the world I'm in. Since
it's an Indonesian dish, I had to try the original and it was just as
great.
Bipasha loved the desserts and found a strange similarity with Bengali sweets like Pithe with patali gur, which is a steamed pancake with melted jaggery and Narkeler Nadu a coconut ladoo.
MOSTLY INDOORS
We mostly stayed in the resort but did make a trip to the local market. However, that too was with the intention of exploring the place and experimenting with the local cuisine. We didn't shop much and just strolled around.
We saw this huge monumentlike structure of Lord Ram with Hanumanji and his monkey army which showcases how culturally similar India and Indonesia are. Bali is known for its nightlife but we didn't go out to party. We went back to the hotel by 9 pm. Basically we are young looking, old people.
The reach of our cinema and television is huge and we are usually recognised where ever we go except for Bali. People would occasionally approach us for photographs and small talk, but that's about it. The locals are pleasant, sweet, humble people.
Whenever we travel, we make sure to try the local cuisine. One of our most memorable Indonesian meals was the Murtabak which is a stuffed panfried bread with layers of egg and kheema.
No man has given me more love and respect than Karan Singh Grover-Bipasha Basu

Madhureeta Mukherjee (BOMBAY TIMES; May 25, 2016)
Theirs was a fairy-tale
romance -with exotic vacations, spectacular celebrations, lavish dates
on faraway islands and dazzling 'fireworks'. Literally, too. Of course,
and selfies that spilled their story bit by bit. In an ultimate
romantic style, last New Year's eve, Karan Singh Grover went down on his
knees and proposed to his ladylove Bipasha Basu. It seemed no less than
a perfectly scripted romantic movie, though he says it was spontaneous
and it felt like the “right moment.“ There were fireworks lighting up
the night skies on a stunning beach, elated spirits and sounds of
cheer. Amidst all that, he popped the question. In a state of daze, she
said, “Okay.“ He said, “I will take that as a yes.“ Months later, they
took their wedding vows, and the grand day was planned by the beautiful
bride herself. In their first interview post shaadi, Bipasha (looking
lovely with a
touch of sindoor on her forehead) and Karan talk about the wedding
hangover, and their new beginnings. Read on...
So how's the post shaadi effect? Or should I ask is there any shaadi ke side effects?
Bipasha: It's been less than a month since the wedding, so I'm guessing it's too early for side effects. Honestly, the two months before the wedding was strenuous for me, as I was the event manager for my own wedding. I felt no jitters absolutely; in fact, I had the best time of my life during those two days of the wedding. My mom said that I was like a hooligan of a bride. I am still reeling under the effect of the wedding. I was particular about every minute detail.
Karan: Being particular is an understatement, she was anal about everything, and she just wouldn't rest. Few days after the wedding, she woke up in the middle of the night and asked me about which security is handling which door and where are the guests entering from.
Bipasha: I guess it's the wedding hangover!
So tell us about the moment when he popped the question?
Bipasha: Well, I believed in marriage, but I never thought I would get married. So when he proposed, my first reaction was...'what are you telling me?' And...
Karan: ...Let me complete the story for you. We were in Koh Samui, it was December 31 and the sky was lit with fireworks. I was carrying the ring with me and something told me that this is the right time. So while she was capturing the fireworks on video, I took the opportunity and gave her the ring. And guess what? Her expression was that of someone who was going to be murdered, like in some of her films. Just picture this...I am on my knees for 10 minutes and between sobs she tells me...'What's wrong with you, why do you want to marry me? I am not supposed to get married.' Finally, she said...'Okay'. To me it sounded like a yes, so I said I will take that.
Dating is one thing. Marriage is something else. Now that you are living together, does it feel different?
Bipasha: Our relationship started as deep friendship, not the Bollywood kind of 'good friends'. I have never met anyone who is so much like me, who is not judgmental about anything in the world and who sees the good in everything. So we are very compatible as partners. Living with him is easy, as he does a lot of household stuff and doesn't expect me to do it. I must say that I feel pampered and he treats me like a princess. My friends tell me that Karan is like a foreigner, as you don't often see Indian men do much of household chores. I genuinely feel happy to see him doing the things he loves doing, like vocal training or painting. I like people with passion and it inspires me. I know that I have a partner who just lets me be, though I don't let him be (laughs!). He is not allowed to just be.
Karan: Hey, see she said it, I didn't. On another note, Bipasha was someone who I didn't know for long and who wasn't family (back then), yet, she gave me all the strength and support which no one ever did.
You were open about your relationships in the past, Bipasha. This time around, you were tight-lipped. Why? Though you couldn't stop posting cute pics on social media?
Bipasha: I guess I was still figuring out our relationship, so I didn't want to talk about it and label it right away. Frankly, there was no real plan to talk or not talk about it. We were living our life, and it didn't stop us from going on holidays and doing our own thing.
Bipasha, we heard that your parents took a while to accept Karan and they had reservations about him?
Bipasha: I don't know why the media kept making our parents sound like some villains. I am very close to my parents, but over the years they've had no control over what I have done in my life. They know I am responsible, and I know that they will always be protective about me. My parents didn't know Karan, but when they saw me so happy, they just came around. He met my mom first; he met my dad much later. My dad never makes quick opinions about people; he likes to build a rapport. I guess they are in a place where they will build a relationship with him.
Karan: Yes, I met her parents in instalments. I met her mom at her birthday party. Bipasha is exactly like her mom - a gorgeous, fiery lady. The first time I met her I touched her feet and I hugged her for really long. I guess that broke the ice and I remember that we even danced that night. Her dad and I shook hands at arms distance at first. Now we hug. At the wedding I kissed his cheeks couple of times. Chance pe dance (laughs!).
Bipasha: Karan's family is very accepting, and I had started talking to them on facetime long before the wedding. Over the last two to three years, his parents have seen him change as a person, for the better. He had a lot of baggage around him, but slowly the choices that he made for himself started changing and his parents saw him coming back into his own self again. It is like starting life from scratch. These choices require a lot of strength. I don't take any credit for that.
Karan (looks at her lovingly and says): These choices require a lot of strength from your partner, too. It's just that sometimes you drift away from your real self, and when your life is a little empty you fill it up with things you don't want. Then you realise what your life is all about and all those things start changing. It takes a lot of effort and encouragement.
Karan was married twice before; did that ever bother you, Bipasha?
Bipasha: It didn't bother me and we spoke about it. I believe that everyone has a journey, and it is very easy for anyone to exclaim, “Oh...this is his third marriage, nahin chalega...divorce ho jaayega.“ I tell people that you have to be in someone's shoes to know their story and understand their journey. This world is full of cynics, and thankfully, I have never been cynical no matter what has happened in my life. I have always been a believer. And Karan is like that, too. I feel I am lucky, as I live only for love. And no man has given me more love and respect than Karan. I might not be looking for the same thing in marriage, like others do. I have my own checklist, and I have ticked my boxes accordingly. And I believe you can't judge anyone for their bad relationships. I have had bad relationships, and I could have been easily married twice. The relationship could have been as deep, but I didn't fall into the legality and that is the only difference. You can't condemn someone on the basis of a piece of paper.
Karan, have you ever won an argument with her? There's a saying that goes... Marriage is a relationship where one person is always right and the other is the husband.
Karan (his quickest response in this interview): No! I have never won an argument with her, and I don't try. There is no point. It's not because she is better at it, but she is mostly right. It is irritating, but 99 per cent of the time she is right. I can argue and scream as much as I want, but at the back of my head when I know that she's right, it is a pointless battle.
Bipasha: I'm usually right! (with a naughty grin)
Karan: Yeah, yeah, she must be thinking...it's a curse; I am always right, I don't know what to do.
Any lovers' tiff, yet?
Karan: Well, we haven't really had a lovers' tiff, but I am somebody who likes to do things in my own relaxed pace. And she wants everything done - now! I am aware that I'm supposed to do something, but she will keep reminding me every 10 minutes.
Bipasha (teasingly tells him): I am never going to change that stand, everything for me is - now. It's been a rule since childhood. I am older than you, so listen to me.
Karan: While that may be right, you know how I describe her? She's a small, crazy child stuck in a hot woman's body.
So how's the post shaadi effect? Or should I ask is there any shaadi ke side effects?
Bipasha: It's been less than a month since the wedding, so I'm guessing it's too early for side effects. My life's been under a Domino effect-Karan Singh Grover

Karan Singh Grover discusses the buzz surrounding an impending wedding with Bipasha Basu
Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 19, 2016)
Encouraged, we wonder if he's popped the question and he retorts, "Whatever there is between Bipasha and me, I want to be able to say it when I'm ready. Give me time. With my upcoming films, my life's been under a Domino effect."
KSG has been making headlines thanks to his happening personal life. He's been with Bipasha for a year, documenting their courtship with selfies in matching pyjama and pull-ups in the gym.
"If I had my way, I wouldn't be sharing my personal life online. I'm a private person. At home, I don't wander around shirtless, flexing my muscles. I roam around unshaven, with my hair dishevelled. Unfortunately, people perceive you differently. It's okay, they're free to speculate," he shrugs.
For Karan his "ideal zone" is his fitness studio, where he practices everything from Parkour and Pilates to Ashtanga Yoga and weight training. He is a fitness addict.
Today, he insists, he's in a "happy and satisfied place", without any regrets about anything.
"When I look back, I find myself connecting the dots and realising why things turned out the way they did. Even if I had done things differently, what happened was meant to be," he says, admitting that he's speaking more sense than he usually does. "It's because of the hour-long headstand I just did or my conversation with my simple, wise old cow of a mother."
The actor is planning to pursue his hobby of sketching and painting professionally and is also open to going back to TV or doing a web-series as long as it's not a rehash.
Prod him on Alone 2, and he says he has nothing against sequels. "I did Hate Story 3, it was fun, but I want to steer clear of erotic thrillers for the moment," he asserts, pointing out that his next release is 3 Dev, a contemporary spin-off on the Holy Trinity with Ravi Dubey as Brahma, Kunal Roy Kapur as Shiva and him as Vishnu. "It's a roller-coaster, we haven't stopped laughing." He's starting a big banner film this summer, but refuses to reveal details.
So we move back to Bipasha? Where's the next vacation? "I'd love to go to Hawaii and once I reach there I'll croon, 'Yellooow ya'll! Its meeeee...'" he laughs. Hmmm, now we know why Bipasha calls him Monkey!
I feel a lot of love for Bipasha Basu-Karan Singh Grover

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; November 21, 2015)
Persuasive and confident,
Karan Singh Grover, a popular face on TV has made foray into films
lately, who doesn't mince his words when it comes to voicing his
opinion. Contrary to his casanova image, he has no qualms about admitting
that intimate scenes scare him. In a candid chat, he talks about Hate
Story 3, his love for Bipasha Basu and his unshakable belief in the
institution of marriage, despite two failed attempts.
What drew you to Hate Story 3?
I've never played a negative character before, so when Vikram Bhatt narrated the script to me, I figured this was unlike what I had ever done. I feel an actor can only grow only if he experiments with different roles. My character Saurabh Singhania is a rich, bad guy, who is driven by revenge, so much that you feel like scratching his face or throwing stones at him.
The intimate scenes in the trailer are creating quite a buzz...
I wish they had shown more of the story, instead of the sizzling scenes. The film is not about boldness or intimacy. Even Alone was not really only about me being presented in a certain way, because eventually the story fizzles out and this is what remains with the audience. In this one, the plot is so strong that other things will take a backseat. I guess, since the franchise is like that, it's being promoted a certain way.
Are you apprehensive about doing bold scenes?
I feel it's scary and uncomfortable as I am a reserved guy. It is not the favourite part of my work. But as professionals, we follow the director's vision and do what he wants. We have to be extra careful while shooting these scenes because we cannot do it over and over again. Thankfully, my next is a funny film that is within my comfort zone.
Does it help if you are friendly with your co-star?
Not really. It's not about your friendship with the co-star but your equation with the director and the whole team. As actors, we need to do our parts exactly the way they have visualised it, because if we don't, we have to keep doing it many times over.
Have you had a hate story in your real life as well?
Hate is a very strong and heavy emotion, probably as strong as love. I don't think I can live with hatred. If something bad happens, you feel bad about it, you forgive and move on. There's no hatred.
So you are the kind who forgives and forgets?
I never forget anything and that's the problem. I wish I could. I am not vindictive. I forgive but I don't forget, ever. Hatred bogs you down. There is more to life than that.
What is the one thing you hate about yourself?
I trust people easily and I am a bad judge of character. I see good in others even when it's not there and sometimes I feel let down. But I don't know if I should change that about myself and become more practical. I have to see something good in every thing.
What annoys you about other people?
I don't like pretentious, two faced people. Everyone has a right to say or behave the way they want to, but I can't fathom how people can pretend to be somebody else.
What's your relationship status with Bipasha Basu?
She is very dear, very close to me. We spend a lot of time together.
Are you in a serious relationship with her?
Let's just say that she is really dear to me and I feel a lot of love for her. She is lovely. (smiles)
What is it about her that you like the most?
She is a child at heart. What you see is what you get. She's a simple girl. I think some people are born with an aura and energy that is so pure. Everything about her is like that.
What binds you together...
We both are very emotional. She is relatively more practical but we have a lot in common. We both like to travel, work out and eat. Trust me, we both are foodies.
After two failed marriages, do you still believe in the institution?
I have not lost faith. I believe in the institution of marriage. It's a beautiful thing, but I have been unlucky. That doesn't mean there's something wrong with it. Sometimes you make wrong decisions in life.
Hate Story 3's promo bears an uncanny resemblance to Hollywood film Indecent Proposal. Are the two similar?
There's no similarity except for the line really. That's a small part of it. The resemblance is just about the line, where he (Robert Redford) wants to sleep with the other person's (Woody Harrelson's) wife (Demi Moore). Apart from that, why my character does what he does is different.
How different is this film from the previous two installments?
Hate Story as a franchise is about revenge and the genre is erotic thriller. This story is different from the previous two films. While the first two were about revenge from the female perspective, this is from the man's perspective. There are so many twists in the film that it keeps you guessing.

I love my body too much. You can't paint a Taj Mahal-Bipasha Basu

Aanchal Tuli and Kashika Saxena (BOMBAY TIMES; January 15, 2015)
Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh
Grover have a lot in common, be it their love for food, fitness or
beautiful bodies. In a tête-àtête, the lead pair of Alone talks about
all things close to their heart. Excerpts:
You've always called yourself a big foodie and yet, you have developed the image of this fitness icon. How do you maintain a balance?
Bipasha: The fact that I eat is a good thing, which is why I have it in my head that I also have to work out to maintain myself. It's very important and I know that if you have to eat, you also have to look after your health. So, I make sure that I don't miss out on either side, which is why this balance in life is very important.
Karan: I work out a lot and I eat a lot.
Bipasha: Oh yes, his metabolism is amazing. Men are more gifted than women, they burn calories so fast.
Karan: Men are not gifted.
Bipasha: Okay, maybe not men, but you, with your metabolism, yes.
Karan: Women are the ones with all the gifts.
Bipasha: Well, in the bigger picture, yes. Women win hands down.
Karan: What are we gonna do with high BMR? That's all we get, high BMR.
Bipasha: But yeah, high BMR is good na. I would love high BMR.
We saw Bipasha's birthday pictures on Instagram, which had lots of food, biryani, cakes, everything.
Bipasha: Everyone knows I am a foodie and that I love biryani. So on my birthday, everyone sent me these tubs of biryani.
Karan: Oh, your birthday biryani! Tubs is an understatement. You can call them ponds of biryani. You basically had to dive in the food and then later, figure out, whether it's chicken, mutton or what.
Bipasha: He looked at the food and said that it was food for 300 people.
Karan: You could feed a country with her birthday food.
Bipasha: There was so much food, cakes galore, red velvet, ladoos, gajar ka halwa, everything that I love. And because I like gajar ka halwa, everyone makes it and sends it to me. So I was like, now which one to eat? My mum's gajar ka halwa is very, very precious to me. Now, on one hand I am telling myself that my birthday is over and I should control, but still, every day I eat little little of my mum's gajar ka halwa.
So what happens the day after a feast like that in the gym?
Bipasha: Well, I'm in a comatose. I've named myself zomatose, a mix of zombie and comatose. I realised why everyone's so slow after having rice. Every motion of my body was slow. I did go to the gym, but it wasn't very effective gymming. It was quite funny.
You're practically like experts on fitness. And it's not the layman's knowledge, it's not like, 'Oh hum gym jaayenge aur calories burn karenge.' You know exactly what to do right...
Bipasha: Well ya, over the years, you keep on trying new things and also, you see how your body reacts to all of that. And the way your body reacts also changes with time, the discipline you put into it, your age. Especially in women, the hormones can make you go crazy. Sometimes it's also a waste, you're doing a kind of exercise everyday, but your body is not showing any effect of it. So that's the time you realise that you've peaked and hit saturation and you need to try something new.
But the general perception is that celebrities hai kuch khaate nahi honge ya there must be cosmetic surgery involved. They don't realise that you guys know almost as much as doctors do, about your bodies.
Karan: Well, not with this generation, where everyone knows everything.
Bipasha: People are much more intelligent, yes. But for celebrities, people still assume that. They get shocked when they see us eat. And we eat a lot. You know, if I order a chicken sandwich in any part of the country, I get some thing that you just can't eat. It's just bread and a few pieces of chicken and at the max, some egg. They don't put anything in it assuming that I must be some crazy health freak who must not eat anything. So I tell them to not say it's for me, tab acha sandwich aata hai.

When did you first get your tattoos and what do they signify?
Bipasha: Tell us about all your tattoos. Even I don't know this.
Karan: Well, I got my first tat too on my right arm which is a dragon when I was 21. I went and asked my parents if I could get a tattoo done and they said no. So I got it anyways. At that time, I didn't put any thought into it, so I just got a dragon. Now I just lie to anyone who asks that my mother's born in the year of the dragon. I realised that much later when I was sitting at a Chinese restaurant and they had this year thing written down. So I was like, oh, my mother's born in the year of the dragon and I have a dragon tattoo. So that makes sense. The next one is on the left arm, which is an aboriginal design, which has a crucifix in it. The left shoulder has the symbol of the seven archangels. Then another one on my right arm, which says 'peace, love, happiness and success,' in Mandarin letters. Then there's another one on the same right arm, which was the most painful. I could hear the needle sound in my brain. The latest is a birthday gift to myself. It's my self-proclaimed designation, superstar, on my left leg. And then one that is across both wrists, that says, Anything but ordinary.' For me, my body is my canvas. I can do whatever I want with it. And I like tattoos. If something means a lot to me, I like the fact that I can get it written on me or painted on me.
Bipasha: My younger sister is exactly like him. My mother would never let her get any, so she would hide and get them done. The first time she impressed my mother was when she got a mandala in which she added the initials of all five family member names in Bengali alphabets. Now she's going to gift a tattoo to my mother. So my mother's turned around, from a person who was against tattoos completely to someone who's going to get a tattoo.
Karan: My dad also keeps telling me, 'when I'll have arms like yours, I'll get a tattoo done.' And I tell him that's never going to happen. Anyone who doesn't have a tattoo won't understand it.
Bipasha: That's true. You have to love it. I would die even if I had to get even one dot. I would never get anything done on my body. I love my body too much. I feel that you can't paint the Taj Mahal.
Karan: Waah!
Bipasha: Yeh churaayi hui line hai. Suna tha kahin (laughing)
Karan: I have graffiti on my Taj Mahal.
Bipasha: Ya, these are our personal Taj Mahals and we can do whatever we want to do with them. Personally, I am afraid of pain and secondly, I love human skin. I would like tattoos on people but not like people who're covered from head to toe. In fact, we love bodies. That's one thing we bond on. Fitness, new kind of training and good bodies. We love beautiful bodies, bodies not like dead bodies. So I like seeing a tan on a person, their natural skin. In the movie, initially, they wanted his tattoos to be hidden. Then when they took off his clothes, they were like how to hide so many tattoos. They said humara bahut paisa chala jaayega special effects mein to clean all of these.
Karan: Listen, I have done a show where, with all these tattoos, I had bare bodied scenes and everything was covered with makeup.
Bipasha: Ab itna time nahi tha ki tumhaare saare tattoos pe makeup lage. All your makeup would be on me.
Karan: That's there. I convinced them ki tattoos rehne do. Makeup karoge to I'll pick up Leo (their dog in the film) toh uspe lagega, Bipasha pe lagega. We'll waste so much time, so then Bhushan sir agreed ki let it be.
