(Crisp) Movie Review: FAST & FURIOUS 9 by FENIL SETA

Fast & Furious 9 is a fun entertainer and is loaded with some exciting action and chase sequences. It’s praiseworthy how the makers continue to think of newer conflicts and thereby do justice to the continuation of the series. However, the ninth part is too lengthy (143 minutes). The first half doesn’t have much action and that’s not a good news for a film which is known for its action. Its also predictable and the much hyped space sequence was just okay. Speaking of performances, Vin Diesel is as expected entertaining. John Cena is restrained and we have seen better villains in this universe. Michelle Rodriguez is dependable as always. Tyrese Gibson and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges add to the fun. Nathalie Emmanuel is a surprise, in the second half. Charlize Theron and Jordana Brewster (Mia Toretto) don’t get much scope. Same goes for Sung Kang. Helen Mirren is wasted. Anna Sawai (Elle) is decent. Vinnie Bennett is great as the young Dominic. All in all, Fast & Furious 9 is a nice one time watch for fans and action lovers. Deserves to be seen on the big screen!

My rating - *** out of 5!

MAHARASHTRA FAILS TO OPEN; 2 HOLLYWOOD FILMS TO TRY THEIR LUCK THIS WEEK!

The crucial state of Maharashtra contributes around 30% of the business. Until the time it doesn’t open, the business is going to be affected. Yet, plenty of Hollywood films were released in cinemas from July 30. Even 2 major Hindi films, Bellbottom and Chehre, also made it to cinemas. The release of these 2 movies, however, was planned with the idea that Maharashtra would open by August 15. When it didn’t, it was too late to pull back and the films did release. As expected, both films didn’t do that well. Till Monday, August 30, Bellbottom had collected Rs. 24 crores while Chehre had earned Rs 2.25 crores.

With cinemas not opening on August 15, everyone hoped that they’ll be allowed to reopen from September 1 for sure. But shockingly, that hasn’t happened either. The industry too is silent for some strange reason. The trade is moving on and now looking forward to the release of 2 big Hollywood films this week. The first one is Fast & Furious 9. It is a part of a popular franchise that has a fan following even among those who watch films in dubbed languages. It was released in the USA and most markets on June 25. That couldn’t happen here as the theatres were shut almost everywhere in India. The initial release date was August 5. It was then pushed to August 19. Sadly, Bellbottom also got scheduled to release on the same day. There would have been a problem of getting sufficient screens. Hence, Universal Pictures shifted the date to September 3. Last weekend, they announced that they’ll arrive a day earlier, that is, September 2.

The earlier Fast & Furious films have done phenomenal business in India and have even opened well. But Fast & Furious 9 might not be huge as it’s a delayed release. Moreover, ever since it was released on digital on July 30 in many markets, high-quality pirated prints have flooded the internet. Hence, many have already seen it. But a section of trade feels that a film like Fast & Furious 9 is made for the big screen. Hence, viewers would throng to watch it. The opening would be in the range of Rs. 1-2 crores. It also has an outside chance of crossing Bellbottom’s day 1 collection of Rs. 2.75 crores since it releases in multiple languages.

The other release of the week is Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings. It belongs to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and releases in India on September 3, on the same day as the USA and many other territories. Also, unlike the recent Disney and Marvel films, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings won’t arrive simultaneously on Disney+. As a result, there won’t be a fear of piracy. Audiences would have no choice but to go to cinemas to enjoy the film in all its glory. The worldwide box office would be huge but in India, there's very little awareness. The dubbed audience crowd are not aware that this film belongs to the same universe as that of Iron Man, Spider-Man etc. Hence, they might skip. However, there are reports that it has gotten a great advance in many centres. Hence, it can spring a surprise.

MAHARASHTRA THEATRES WILL NOT OPEN THIS WEEK; WILL FAST & FURIOUS 9 AND BELLBOTTOM GET AFFECTED?

Last week, we discussed how Hollywood studios in India have decided to release their films even though the key market of Maharashtra is still shut. Mortal Kombat was released on July 30 and today, The Suicide Squad is releasing. The latter is having a day-and-date release, meaning, it releases on the same day in India as in the USA and many other markets. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It will arrive in cinemas next week, on August 13, but the trade was most excited for Fast & Furious 9, which will hit theatres on August 19.

Last Friday, it was announced that the much awaited Akshay Kumar starrer Bellbottom would also release on August 19. A section of trade and exhibitors were concerned with the clash as it could mean that the business would get divided. But the excitement of having two major releases in cinemas overpowered all apprehensions.

The Bellbottom announcement happened a day after Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope indicated that cinemas will be allowed to open in the state in August. However, when the guidelines for August were announced on Monday, August 2, everyone got a grave shock. As per the directives, cinema halls and theatres were not allowed to resume operations in Maharashtra. Everyone feared that Bellbottom would be pushed since Maharashtra contributes a major chunk of business. Thankfully, the makers of Bellbottom launched their trailer at a grand event on Tuesday, August 3.

So will Bellbottom release in theatres in India sans Maharashtra? Sources in the trade and exhibition sector have assured that cinemas would be allowed to reopen in the state between August 12 and August 15. The makers of Bellbottom have been assured of it and this is why, it is said, that the film is releasing on August 19. At the trailer launch of the film, Akshay Kumar hinted that 2 weeks are left for the film to release and that anything can happen in this period.

As for Hollywood, we had reported last week that the studios have decided not to wait for Maharashtra and scheduled their releases. These films would still release regardless of whether or not Maharashtra allows cinemas to reopen. But what if the Maharashtra government does a U-turn and doesn't permit theatres? Will Bellbottom still make it? These questions are unsettling and here’s hoping everyone gets a clear idea by next week.

Black Widow heading to be the top grosser in USA

Black Widow trailer
Box Office India Trade Network

BLACK WIDOW is heading to be the top grosser in the USA post the pandemic as it chases down the numbers of FAST & FURIOUS 9. The film would have been the first $200 million film post the pandemic but it had a almost simultaneous release on Disney Plus which has no doubt hit business.

The film stands at around $143 million after its first two weeks while FAST & FURIOUS 9 is at $158 million after four weeks. After two weeks, FAST & FURIOUS 9 had collected $130 million. So BLACK WIDOW is ahead by $13 million if we compare similar stages.

FAST & FURIOUS 9 has shown good holds as last weekend, it only dropped around 33%. If this trend continues then in the final run the gap between BLACK WIDOW and FAST & FURIOUS may only be $5-8 million, depending on how the former holds. The Coronavirus cases are also rising in US and it remains to be seen how that affects the box office.

BLACK WIDOW also got the advantage of parts of Canada opening up in the second weekend which was also a factor for FAST & FURIOUS 9 but at a lower level. Both Black Widow and FAST & FURIOUS 9 have a shot at hitting the $175 million mark.

The top five films in US / Canada post the pandemic are as follows.
1. Fast & Furious 9 - $158 million (4 weeks)
2. A Quiet Place Part II - $156 million (8 weeks)
3. Black Widow - $143 million (2 weeks)
4. Godzilla vs. Kong - $100 million
5. Cruella - $84 million (8 weeks)

Black Widow collects $105 million in Week 1 in USA; collections affected due to Disney+ release

Black Widow
Box Office India Trade Network

BLACK WIDOW has scored a record week in the USA with collections of $105 million including previews which comfortably surpasses the $93 million of FAST & FURIOUS 9 in week one including previews. It is the first film post the pandemic to hit $100 million in a week.

These are good numbers but it could have been far better as the film began to drop on the second day due to a release on Disney +  on the second day of its theatrical release. BLACK WIDOW had far better reports compared to FAST & FURIOUS 9 and was coming with the Marvel branding. But collections dropped around 40% on day two while for a film like FAST & FURIOUS 9, it was around 25%. These drops include the preview numbers which are now being added to Friday collections but both are like for like.

The drop should have been lesser for BLACK WIDOW or on a worst case similar to FAST & FURIOUS 9 due to the better reports but rampant piracy post a PVOD release film hits collections no matter what and this is what has probably happened to BLACK WIDOW. A PVOD release alongside theatrical without piracy can probably live hand in hand but that is impossible to achieve.

The PVOD release will probably also be reflected in the final worldwide numbers of the film which should have easily gone past FAST & FURIOUS 9. BLACK WIDOW should also easily become the highest grossing film post the pandemic in US but now it remains to be seen if it can go past A QUIET PLACE PART II ($152m) and FAST & FURIOUS 9 ($147m) and both films still running.

BLACK WIDOW had a shot at the $200 million mark were it not for the Disney + release due to the Marvel brand and reports of the film.

Fast & Furious 9 emerges as 1st Hollywood film to cross $500 million worldwide post pandemic

F9

Box Office India Trade Network

FAST & FURIOUS 9 continued its strong run in US and United Kingdom in its second weekend as it held up very well especially considering the genre. The film clocked up $23 million in the US which is a 63% drop its first 3 day weekend and then added a further $6 million for the Independence Day holiday on Monday.

It has taken the film to a total of $122 million and is sure to cross the $150 million mark. It is probably a race to see which is the first film post the pandemic to hit $150 as A QUIET PLACE PART II stands at $145 million and that should also hit $150 million in the next 7-10 days.

The film has hit £11 million in United Kingdom as it collected a solid £2.5 million in its second weekend which is down only 48% from its first three day weekend. The film is also the first Hollywood film to cross $500 million worldwide post the pandemic.

The box office in both UK and US is gradually picking up and there will be BLACK WIDOW with the Marvel brand this week to test the waters further. Both countries have seen a huge vaccination drive which has led to most restrictions being lifted and life coming back close to normal. This has led to cinemas seeing good footfalls after a long time even though there is limited new content.

FAST & FURIOUS 9 IS A SUCCESS IN THE HOME MARKET; ALL EYES NOW ON BLACK WIDOW!

Two weeks back, we spoke about how the box office performance has improved drastically in foreign countries. Numerous Hollywood films, small and big, have been released since March and some of them have emerged to be a big success. The revival began with Godzilla vs. Kong which was released on March 31. Worldwide, it has collected more than $450 million.

Later, Mortal Kombat, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway and Cruella ended up doing decent business. The horror film A Quiet Place Part II emerged as a surprise. It performed as if there’s no pandemic and as of July 5, it has collected a mind-boggling $258 million worldwide. Another horror film that also worked is The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Its worldwide collections are nearly $175 million. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It probably earned less than A Quiet Place Part II as the former’s word of mouth is not that positive and also because it was released simultaneously online, on HBO Max. Yet, it's great the film has collected so much and it's still going strong.

On June 25, the much-awaited film, Fast & Furious 9, released in the USA, Canada, United Kingdom and many major markets. Before, it had already got a release in China, Russia, South Korea, UAE etc from where it had already earned $292.5 million, more than its budget of around $200 million. The film has received mixed reviews and yet, the film is going super strong. In the USA, it collected $122 million till Monday, July 4. The trade experts out there are excited to see which film hits the $150 million mark first – Fast & Furious 9 or A Quiet Place Part II whose earnings stand at $145 million.

In the United Kingdom, it has collected £11 million. As of July 5, it has collected nearly $500 million worldwide. It is the first Hollywood film post-pandemic to do so. The last film to cross this coveted mark was Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker. It was released in December 2019 and had collected $1.07 billion. Fast & Furious 9, however, won’t be able to cross the $1 billion mark, though its predecessors – Fast & Furious 7 and Fast & Furious 8 – had achieved the feat. Fast & Furious 6 had collected $789 million worldwide and that should be the target of Fast & Furious 9.

These are extraordinary collections in times of pandemic and with each passing day, the situation is improving. This Friday, July 9, will see the release of Black Widow, a Marvel film. It also has a tremendous buzz and it remains to be seen if it can go past the collections put up by Fast & Furious 9.

Hollywood is back in action, and how

With curbs lifted, things seems to be finally looking up for the entertainment business
Juhi Chakraborty (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 5, 2021)

As the Coronavirus crisis eases its grip across the world, Hollywood is making merry, and how! With major releases raking moolah at the box office and many big films going in production, it looks like things are finally headed in the right direction for the entertainment business.

Over its opening weekend, Fast & Furious 9 tallied $70 million in box-office receipts, the highest figure for a film that released in the midst of the pandemic. The previous record holder was A Quiet Place Part II, which opened in May with just under $50 million in ticket sales, reports CNBC.

According to Deadline, A Quiet Place Part II is closing in on $250 million worldwide and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It crossed $100 million at the international box office. Other releases that have hit the bullseye include The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard and Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway.

In the next few weeks, a number of blockbuster features are lined up, such as Black Widow, Jungle Cruise, Space Jam: A New Legacy and Snake Eyes. This would be followed by Dune, Free Guy, Eternals, The Green Knight, The Suicide Squad, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Spider-Man: No Way Home and No Time To Die.

Not just releases, even film productions are going into overdrive. Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever — the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster Black Panther (2018) — has started production in Atlanta, reports Variety.

The original cast of the film is set to reunite sans Chadwick Boseman, who died in August last year after a four-year battle with colon cancer. The film is slated to release in July next year.

Filmmaker James Wan shared a picture of a clap board placed in an icy cavern and wrote, “Day One. #aquaman2”, signalling the commencement of the shoot of Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom. The Jason Momoa-led film will hit cinemas in December 2022.

Filmmaker Rian Johnson also took to social media to announce the production of Knives Out 2. Actor Daniel Craig will reprise his role as the clever private investigator Benoit Blanc, alongside a new cast that includes Dave Bautista and Edward Norton, among others.

The fourth instalment of the John Wick franchise is also in the works. The Chad Stahelski directorial, starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Rina Sawayama and Shamier Anderson, is scheduled to release in May next year.

Fast & Furious 9 sets records in USA, UK

f9, vin diesel, Michelle Rodriguez

Box Office India Trade Network

FAST & FURIOUS 9 set a post pandemic record as it collected around $63 million over its three day weekend in the US and a $70 million apprx total including previews. A QUIET PLACE PART II had collected around $47 million over its three day weekend which makes FAST & FURIOUS 9 around 35% better. This is still with caps on capacity at many places in US and cinemas in Canada still shut.

The franchise in US probably has its best days behind it. So these numbers coming when the box office is not firing on all cylinders are very good and there is a slow upward trend for audiences coming back to the theatres. FAST & FURIOUS 9 will the third film to cross the $100 million mark post the pandemic after GODZILLA VS. KONG and A QUIET PLACE PART II and that $100 million weekend will soon come if things keep on this trajectory.

The film also opened to excellent results in United Kingdom as it collected £1.25 million on limited screens on Thursday and will easily set a post pandemic record. The biggest films in the UK post the pandemic are TENET at £16 million plus and PETER RABBIT 2: THE RUNAWAY at £15 million plus. PETER RABBIT 2: THE RUNAWAY should go ahead of TENET but FAST & FURIOUS 9 will probably go ahead of Peter Rabbit before it beats TENET.

Fast & Furious 9 kicks off in USA and United Kingdom

Vin Diesel's F9 movie
Box Office India Trade Network

The ninth installment of the FAST & FURIOUS franchise (FAST & FURIOUS 9) will kick off in in US and UK this weekend and it is arguable the biggest film to release from Hollywood post the pandemic. The film is expected to be the biggest opener in US post the pandemic and its the same for UK though here it does not have much to beat as the market has never been in a good condition when a major film was releasing. Its cant be called in good condition now but its better than the last year or so.

Also known as F9: THE FAST SAGA, it will also release in some other major markets like Brazil and Mexico while major European countries outside UK will see a release on a later date. The film has already been released in markets like Australia (last week) and China (May) and has so far collected around the $300 million mark.

The best film of the franchise has been FAST & FURIOUS 7 which crossed the $1.5 billion mark worldwide and $350m in US/Canada; that was possibly the peak of the franchise. The franchise is more of an international driven one than the local US market but here there may well be some pent up demand for this type of summer blockbuster.

A good result for the film will be if it can top the opening weekend numbers of A QUIET PLACE PART II by around 40-50%. A QUIET PLACE PART II opened at around the $47 million mark. FAST & FURIOUS 9 will be also be expected to the driving the force in India also as cinemas start to reopen next month. But there is no date set for an India release yet and the wait will be for more clarity regarding the opening of cinemas across the country and this will come very soon.

HOLLYWOOD MARKET BACK ON ITS FEET; ALL EYES ON INDIAN BOX OFFICE!

The number of Coronavirus cases has come down considerably in India in the last 40 days. The government in various states has permitted the opening of the economy to an extent. However, due to the possibility of a third wave coupled with insufficient vaccination coverage, there is fear that we might face another outbreak shortly. However, in the long run, things will be better for India, as proved by the performance of countries that have vaccinated a substantial chunk of the population. In the USA, New Zealand, Australia, UAE etc, cases have decreased while vaccination is going great. As a result, its citizens are much more confident to come out. And in these and other countries, the footfalls in cinemas have increased considerably.

The first sign of revival was seen with the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, which was released on March 31, 2021, in the USA and most markets. It was released simultaneously on the digital platform HBO Max. And yet, it had a weekend of $31.6 million. Worldwide, it did a huge business of nearly $443 million. Later, films like Mortal Kombat and Cruella also had a healthy box office run, further proving that the situation is improving. Meanwhile, a Japanese animated film, Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train, also opened well in the USA and other countries.

Then, the much-awaited horror film, A Quiet Place Part II, released in many countries on May 28. Surprisingly, the film had the best weekend post-pandemic in the USA and Canada, collecting $47.4 million. In other words, it collected better than the biggie, Godzilla vs. Kong, on the weekend. This was probably as the confidence of going to cinemas was a little less when Godzilla vs. Kong released two months before. Also, Godzilla vs. Kong was released on HBO Max simultaneously. But A Quiet Place Part II was available only in cinemas. Its weekend earnings led to excitement because these numbers are at par with what the film could have earned pre-pandemic. As of June 21, 2021, A Quiet Place Part II has collected $126.3 million in the United States and Canada, and $96.7 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $223 million.

Lastly, another hyped horror film, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, released on June 4, a week after A Quiet Place Part II. It had a decent weekend of $24 million. Again, like Godzilla vs. Kong, it was available on a streaming platform simultaneously and that must have taken away a chunk of theatrical earnings. Till June 20, it has managed to collect $142.8 million worldwide, which is more than A Quiet Place Part II.

All eyes are now on Fast & Furious 9, which releases almost everywhere tomorrow, on June 25. The series needs no introduction. Its spectacular action scenes make it a must-watch on the big screen. It has already been released in countries like China, Russia, South Korea, UAE etc and has had a great run. It has already earned $292.5 million, more than its budget of around $200 million. Obviously, the collections will get a boost once it releases in the USA, Canada and other countries. It remains to be seen if it can cross the $443 million lifetime collections of Godzilla vs. Kong.

These numbers prove that despite the availability of entertainment options at home, people are desperate to go out and watch films in cinemas, just like in the old times. Hence, even in India, one can expect the box office to get back on track once the Covid-19 threat subsides.

There are things you can watch on TV at home, not Fast & Furious 9, say Justin Lin, Vin Diesel, John Cena, Michelle Rodriguez

The stars of Fast & Furious 9 – Vin Diesel, John Cena, Michelle Rodriguez – and director Justin Lin talk about releasing the film on big screens amid the pandemic, female representation in action films & more
Abhimanyu Mathur (BOMBAY TIMES; April 16, 2021)

The pandemic has made Zoom calls and virtual meetings quite commonplace, even when it comes to a press meet of one of the biggest movie franchises in the world. Earlier this week, we interacted with the stars of the upcoming F9 (Fast & Furious 9) — Vin Diesel, John Cena, Michelle Rodriguez, along with director Justin Lin — virtually. The stars spoke about the responsibility of reviving cinema in the theatres through the muchanticipated film, female representation in action films, and (yes, it’s true) the film, including an action sequence set in space.

‘IT’S SOMETHING SPECIAL WHEN THERE IS A PACKED AUDIENCE IN A THEATRE’
Vin Diesel has been the face of the franchise for two decades. Talking about the film’s theatrical release during the pandemic, he said, “It feels incredible to be a part of something that will bring the world together. I think we, as a society, never anticipated that we could be losing by not being able to be entertained together as a community. It’s something special when there is a packed audience — with your family and friends — in a theatre. To be a part of the return of the theatrical experience is something that feels so right and something I am proud of.”

‘WE WERE VERY COMMITTED TO THE CINEMA EXPERIENCE’
Although the last few months have seen big budget releases such as Tenet and Godzilla Vs Kong, they failed to provide the push many had been expecting for reviving the theatres in the post-COVID era. The movie industry is now banking on F9, as the franchise’s previous two instalments earned in excess of $1 billion at the box office. The film’s director Justin Lin said he was committed to having this movie release in the theatres, even if it meant holding the release for over a year after the first trailer dropped. He elaborated, “We were so committed to the cinema experience. We were all on the phone, constantly talking about finding the right time to be able to share this with the world, so that we can all go to the theatres and watch it. There are things you can watch on TV at home, but not this.”

‘I AM GETTING TO BE A PART OF A LEGACY THAT IS TWO DECADES LONG’
The movie brings in wrestler-turned actor John Cena as the primary antagonist and Cena says he is living out his dream by being a part of it. He said, “I don’t lose sight of the opportunity I am getting to be a part of a legacy that is two decades long, where these people have devoted their lives and put their physical health on line to maintain the reputation that goes along with these movies. I knew full well going in that I would be sized up but I’m also a super geek fan of the franchise. I love what the movies are and what a life-changing opportunity it is to be invited into this.”

‘IT’S QUITE BEAUTIFUL TO WATCH THE GIRLS IN ACTION IN THIS ONE’
Action films have often been criticised for focussing too much on the male leads and reducing the female characters to props. However, the film’s female lead Michelle Rodriguez — a veteran of the franchise — feels that F9 is different because of how the writers and director Lin approached the female characters here. “I’ve never been prouder of female presence in the franchise. I give props to the studio for including a female writer on the film, and Justin has been really good with strong women. He developed Gal Gadot’s character in Fast Five. It’s beautiful to watch the girls in action in this one,” she said.

‘SPOKE TO ACTUAL ROCKET SCIENTISTS WHILE RESEARCHING FOR THIS FILM’
In the past, each subsequent film in the franchise has featured one outlandish action sequence and it has been a running Internet joke for a few years that one of these days, a film will have Vin Diesel piloting a rocket ship just to outdo the previous ones. Well, that is almost happening because F9 features an action sequence set in space.

Talking about the ‘insane’ sequence, Lin said, “I think it’s our responsibility that every time we get an opportunity to do one of these films, we have to push it. To me, it wasn’t like an agenda that we had to do. It was very organic. I felt like I went back to school actually because I had been talking to literal rocket scientists for the research. It actually felt amazing.”

Logjam at the box office in 2021?

Even as a number of Hindi as well as Hollywood biggies shift to 2021 due to the pandemic, experts feel it will only ensure ‘a steady and robust flow’ of quality films
Prashant Singh (HINDUSTAN TIMES; December 9, 2020)

It’s a given that 2020 has been nothing less than disastrous for movie exhibition business. But now that the year is nearing it’s end, 2021 may see a box- office logjam of sorts as all the films — Bollywood, Hollywood and others — that have moved to next year, besides the ones that were anyway set for a 2021 outing, will have back-to-back dates with the big screen.

From Bollywood, titles such as Sooryavanshi, '83, Maidaan, Jersey, Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai and Laal Singh Chaddha among others have moved to 2021. Plus, a number of films such as Mumbai Saga, Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Brahmastra, Bunty Aur Babli 2, Prithviraj, Shamshera and Bellbottom are either complete or nearing completion.

Experts, on their part, feel a “steady flow” will help the entire ecosystem. “The year 2021 will be a very exciting year as a number of big films will finally hit theatres, which, in turn, will contribute in bringing back people to theatres and, help theatres finally earn some revenue,” says trade analyst Taran Adarsh, adding that the “big films are the need of the hour” for theatres.

Not just Bollywood movies, a number of topline Hollywood biggies such as West Side Story, Mission: Impossible 7, The Suicide Squad, Top Gun: Maverick, Fast & Furious 9, Black Widow, A Quiet Place Part II, No Time To Die, Morbius and The French Dispatch among others also made their way towards 2021. “After a remarkably bad 2020, a steady and robust flow of quality movies next year can really help bring a lot of things back on track, which is the need of the hour for the entire exhibition sector,” says exhibitor-distribitor Akshaye Rathi.

But what about the logjam at the box office? “In a way, it will be a good problem to have after a disastrous 2020. So, exhibitors and distributors may not complain with the sheer variety,” says filmmaker Anees Bazmee, adding: “But I hope that the release windows can be worked out in a way that no one faces any loss.”

Industry experts are confident that release windows can be spaced out and “makers will do that”.

Adarsh says: “I am sure everyone will space out their releases instead of stepping onto each other’s shoes. Be it screens, footfalls or box-office, they can be divided for everyone’s benefit.”

For Rathi, spacing out a film’s release is directly proportional to a film’s revenue share. “I only hope that all the tentpole films space out their release dates by at least a week because we wouldn’t want a situation wherein two or three of them are out on a day, resulting in business getting divided,” he says.

No Christmas cheer at BO?
While Christopher Nolan’s Tenet has brought in some cheer to Indian box-office with opening weekend collections of ₹4.25 crore (it’s expected to make ₹10-12 crore in India), exhibitors -distribitors are surprised that no premium Hindi film has gone for the lucrative Christmas weekend. As of now, only Wonder Woman 1984 and Shakeela are slated for December 25 release. “Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s production, Tuesdays And Fridays may come out on Christmas,” says a source.

Hollywood's winning streak stopped in tracks due to Coronavirus

Of late, Hollywood films have been doing exceedingly well in India, but Covid-19 crisis is likely to bring things to a halt this year
Prashant Singh (HINDUSTAN TIMES; May 7, 2020)

With shuttered theatres all over the world and millions of people staying at home, the movie business is feeling the heat of the Coronavirus pandemic; and that, too, when summer blockbusters should ideally have been the buzzword. The same holds true for Hollywood business in India, which was on a potent ascent in the country for the past four-five years. Last year, in fact, Hollywood films earned over ₹1,220 crore in India. The corresponding figures for 2017 and 2018 were around ₹850 crore and ₹950 crore, respectively. So, has the lockdown jolted Hollywood’s rise in India?

“With March quarter gone, and the next quarter also looking in doubt, it’s a tough period for everyone, including Hollywood. But don’t write 2020 off yet. If theatres can open around August-September, we will have the last quarter (October-December), which is the big festive period,” says exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi, who “strongly believes” that regardless of what happens this year, 2021 will be an “astoundingly blockbuster” year thanks to “pent-up demand among people”.

Hollywood biggies would surely hope so, considering that last year, India got its highest Hollywood grosser of all time — Avengers: Endgame (earning close to ₹374 crore). Then, The Lion King made ₹158 crore, becoming one of the the highest Hollywood grossers in India. Joker earned ₹68 crore, despite an adult rating and no dubbed versions. But Hollywood won’t have it easy, thanks to a number of Hindi biggies waiting in line and limited release windows. “It’s going to be a tough fight at the box office. Hollywood films will have to contend with not just Hindi films but also a barrage of biggies down south, too. So, it looks unlikely that the Hollywood business can be as big this year as it has been in the past few years,” says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

Although a biggie such as the Vin Diesel-starrer Fast & Furious 9 has been pushed to next year, other much-anticipated films such as No Time To Die, Mulan, Black Widow, Free Guy, Top Gun: Maverick, Wonder Woman 1984, Tenet and The French Dispatch are still slated for 2020.

“I won’t be surprised if more Hollywood films get postponed to next year because more than 70% of their business comes from overseas markets such as China and, of late, India, too. And whenever theatres re-open in India, I am sure Hindi films will get priority. So, Hollywood has surely taken a big hit,” says filmmaker Sanjay Gupta.

HOLLYWOOD FILMS GET PUSHED DUE TO CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

One of the first biggies of Hollywood of 2020 was going to be No Time To Die. It is the 25th film of the popular James Bond franchise and there was a lot of hype for it worldwide. The release date was set for April 10 in most markets and April 3 in India. But then the Coronavirus outbreak caused panic all around the planet. Hence, on March 4, the producers decided to postpone the film to November 12 in United Kingdom and November 25 in the USA. This decision led to shockwaves all over. While some feel it’s justified, many felt it was wrong to push the film by almost 6 months. After all, in the first week of March, the world had not woken up to the fact that this disease is going to cause madness like never before.

If this was not enough, the Fast & Furious 9 makers went a step ahead. This actioner was to release on May 22. In India, it was to clash with 2 other Eid releases – Radhe and Laxmmi Bomb. However on March 12, the makers announced that it has been postponed to, believe it or not, April 2, 2021! The message was clear – there’s fear that the outbreak will take a lot of months to subside.

In no time, other biggies to followed suit. The Marvel film Black Widow was to release on April 30 was pushed to November 6. On this day in November, The Eternals was to come and it was postponed to February 12, 2021. Mulan, which was scheduled to hit cinemas on March 27, will now arrive on July 24, 2020.

Talking of DC films, they were all set to present Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5. It is now scheduled for a release on August 14. The horror flick A Quiet Place Part II will now release on September 4, 2020 after initially being planned for a March 20 release.

Fans of Tom Cruise, meanwhile, would have to wait longer as Top Gun: Maverick is pushed from July 12, 2020 to December 23, 2020. Minions: The Rise of Gru, like Fast & Furious 9, was also pushed to 2021, from July 3, 2020 to July 2, 2021. Same goes for Jungle Cruise – from July 24, 2020, it has been pushed to July 30, 2021! Ghostbusters: Afterlife too got moved to 2021 but not by 1 full year. From July 10, 2020, it has been postponed to March 5, 2021. Similarly, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, which was to come on April 3, 2020 will now hit theatres on January 15, 2021. Meanwhile, Chirstopher Nolan’s highly awaited Tenet is scheduled for July 17, 2020 release. There has been no change in release plans of this thriller as of now.

Meanwhile, a few films have been moved to digital. Onward released on March 6 but after the outbreak grew bigger, it was released on the streaming platform Disney+. Artemis Fowl, meanwhile, will no longer come to cinemas. It’ll directly arrive on Disney+. Trolls World Tour had a very limited release in USA and has been released on OTT. The release of Kumail Nanjiani’s film The Lovebirds was cancelled and it’ll release directly on Netflix.

There are many more Hollywood movies which have also got postponed. The question in people’s minds is – will these films be able to adhere to the new release dates? Will there be a further postponement? Only time will tell.

Ali Fazal to reprise his role in Fast & Furious 9?

Ali Fazal
Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; January 20, 2018)

Ali Fazal made his Hollywood debut three years ago with Furious 7 (the seventh instalment of the Fast & Furious franchise), in which he played Safar, a garage owner who helps hustle the Furious gang to their mission. He had a small role, and barely three scenes in the film, but it was talked about. However, the actor was not part of the eighth film in the series.

Now, we hear Ali will reprise his role in the next instalment of the hit action franchise that is set to roll by the middle of this year. The actor’s last Hollywood release, Victoria & Abdul (2017), saw him sharing screen space with Dame Judi Dench. Since the release of the film, he has been getting a lot of opportunities in the West. He has also signed a biopic in Hollywood. Says a source, “Ali was seen in a small yet impactful role in Furious 7, which the audiences liked. After the lead role in Victoria & Abdul, his character is being revived in Fast & Furious 9. Though he will play the same character that he essayed in the seventh instalment, this time he’ll have more screen time.”
