Celebrated actor-filmmaker Aamir Khan, long known as Bollywood’s Mr Perfectionist, has often drawn attention not just for his work but for the unusually warm relationships he maintains with his former partners. On Sunday, at the 2025 Hindustan Times Leadership Summit in Delhi, he spoke candidly with Sonal Kalra, Chief Managing Editor (Entertainment and Lifestyle) about the harmony within his blended family and the new chapter in his personal life.

Aamir married Reena Dutta in 1986. The couple were together for 16 years and have two children: Junaid and Ira. Their marriage ended in 2002, but their friendship endured. “Reena is an amazing person. She’s someone I have grown up with… The fact that we fell apart as husband and wife does not mean we fell apart as human beings. I truly value the time that I’ve spent with her.”

Aamir married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005, and the two parted ways in 2021 after 16 years of marriage. They continue to co-parent their son Azad Rao Khan and remain closely connected. “Kiran is an amazing person. She and I decided to part ways as husband and wife, but we are family. And I’m not kidding when I say that, I really mean it.” He expanded on the unusual yet harmonious dynamic: “Kiran, her parents, my family, Reena, her parents... we are all actually one family.”

When asked whether he imagined finding love again at 60, he admitted, “No, I didn’t actually. I felt I probably wouldn’t be able to find someone who can be my partner. I was not expecting it.”

Describing what Gauri brings into his life, Aamir said with a laugh: “Oh! She brings a lot of calm, she brings a lot of steadiness. She’s a really amazing person and I’m so fortunate that I met her.”
