The Settlers is a Spanish-English film set in 1893 in Chile. From the very start, the film seems shaky and gets better only occasionally. The film is riddled with disturbing scenes. But the big problem with the film is that the narrative is not tight. The ending is bizarre. It's rare to see hardly 1 or 2 moviegoers clapping in a film festival when the end credits roll. And that says it all about The Settlers. What works are the stunning cinematography of the Andes and the performances by Camilo Arancibia (Segundo), Mark Stanley (Alexander MacLennan), Alexander MacLennan (Bill) and Mishell GuaƱa (Kiepja). All in all, The Settlers is avoidable.
