Never imagined Hungama would be a classic

As Hungama clocks 20 years, actor Paresh Rawal reveals that no one in the team envisioned that the comedy will be “fondly remembered till date”. In fact, the veteran actor feels someone must try to remake the hit.

“We had a lot of fun while working on the film, which was very well directed and written by Priyadarshan ji. I had good co-actors, too. But we never imagined that it would turn out to be a classic,” Rawal tells us.

Reminiscing about the days of shooting, the 68-year-old adds, “While working, we did not shoot with the thought that it would turn out to be a hit or would become timeless. We went to the set, gave our 100% and moved on.” Rawal is quick to add that it is the audience that makes a film hit. “It is their love that keeps the story and a film alive in their hearts and minds for 20 years, making it memorable,” he says.

Also starring Akshaye Khanna, Aftab Shivdasani, Rimi Sen and Shoma Anand in prominent roles, the film uses the classic comedy of errors trope. Even now, some clips from the film featuring Rawal and Anand are often spotted as memes on social media.

We ask the actor if he would want to see a remake of Hungama, which is also a remake of Priyadarshan’s 1984 Malayalam film Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, and he replies, “I’m not against the idea of the film being remade again, but it must do justice to the one we made. If the script is good, only then should one attempt to touch and remake it; if not, they should leave it be. Jo already hit hai, usko bigadne ki koi zaroorat nahin hai.”
