Actors Akshaye Khanna and Bobby Deol may have made successful comebacks with their recent films, but it’s their Gen Z fans who’ve truly propelled them into the spotlight, making both stars viral sensations like never before
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; December 10, 2025)
Everyone loves an underdog finally getting their moment in the spotlight and right now, it’s actors Akshaye Khanna (50) and Bobby Deol (56) stealing it. Gen Z can’t get enough of Akshaye, while Bobby has been crowned “Lord Bobby” online, with fans going all out for their favourites.
Akshaye’s recent performance in Dhurandhar has earned universal praise, especially after his dance to the film’s catchy Arabic number went viral. Earlier this year, Chhaava had also won him widespread admiration, proving his charm just keeps growing.
Similarly, Bobby, who had been away from the mainstream for a few years, is back in a big way. Animal (2023) reignited his career, with his entry song Jamal Kudu becoming an instant rage. And this year, The Ba***ds Of Bollywood further cemented his renewed fan base.
Trade analysts see this as a positive for the industry. Komal Nahta notes, “It’s all about getting that right role. Bobby had a small role in Animal but it created a tremendous impact. On social media, Gen Z has dubbed him as Lord Bobby for long.”
He adds that the social media love for both stars isn’t fleeting. “We need more good actors. Akshaye should keep signing more films and not retreat after Chhaava and now Dhurandhar,” Nahta says.
‘Happy to see Bobby make a huge comeback’
Ramesh Taurani, co-producer of Race 3 — Bobby’s comeback film in 2018 after a career slump — is thrilled with the actor’s return to the limelight. He says, “Bobby was a star even before his debut film… I can’t describe the craze people had for him even before he launched. He’s not only good-looking but now a solid actor too.”
’Akshaye deserves more success’
Director Priyadarshan, who has worked with Akshaye in multiple films, admits he wasn’t aware of the resurgence of Jeetu from Videocon, Akshaye’s now-cult character from the 2003 film Hungama.
He says, “It’s not just about Gen Z, people have always loved him. Earlier, PR and the media made an actor, but today, audiences form their own opinions. The fact that people are talking about him now shows he was always a genuinely favourite artiste.”
Laxman Utekar, who directed Akshaye in Chhaava, says, “The kind of performer he is, his physique… when we did his look test, it was magical. He deserves even more success.”
Meanwhile, director Farah Khan shared on social media that she often sends Akshaye all the viral reels of his funny scenes in Tees Maar Khan (2010).
AKSHAYE’S VIRAL DANCE
The song that Akshaye dances to in Dhurandar is Fa9la by Flipperachi, a Bahraini rap track currently ruling social media. The track has gone so viral that even BJP shared a reel on Tuesday highlighting PM Modi’s journey from childhood, set to this very song! The lines translate to: “Brother, dance hard, I’m ready for a good time...”
Mere furniture roles hote the, says Rimi Sen on absence from films amid legal trouble

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 23, 2024)
Star of Hungama (2003), Dhoom (2004), Deewane Huye Pagal (2005), Phir Hera Pheri and Golmaal: Fun Unlimited (2006) — and away from the spotlight for the past 13 years — actor Rimi Sen has come out of her hibernation. The 42-year-old is in the middle of a legal issue and alleges losing Rs. 4 crore to a con man.
“He pretended to be a rich businessman and took Rs. 4 crore from me in parts since 2020, promising to return it with a high interest. He started making excuses after taking the money, claiming his family got Covid-19 and then he had to go to Canada,” she shares, adding that the case was transferred to the authorities some time back, and a chargesheet will be filed soon. “A warrant will be issued against that man for cognisable offence,” Sen says.
Even as the investigation goes on, we ask the actor about her disappearance from films. “Main comedy films kar kar ke thak gayi thi, there used to be not much of a role for me there. Mera sirf furniture role hota tha. I had a good role in only a few, like Hungama and Johnny Gaddaar (2007). The latter didn’t work, and that’s the kind of work I wanted to do,” she tells us.
Did she find herself in circumstances where she was replaced or her role cut due to someone not being happy with her success? “Stakes are really high in this industry. Talent come later — you should first know how to handle people. Otherwise kuchh nahin ho sakta, talent pada rahega store room mein. Mujhe nahin aata tha bechna, PR karna,” she signs off.
‘Jab tak gidgidao nahin, help nahin milti hai’
Sen resurfaced in 2015, for the reality show Bigg Boss and because of her co-production, the National Award-winning film Budhia Singh: Born To Run. Having worked with A-listers such as Akshay Kumar, John Abraham and Ajay Devgn, is she still connected with people in the film industry? “I am not. I can’t ask anyone for help. Jab tak gidgidao nahin, help nahin milti hai. Why won’t other people look for their own benefit? Why will someone go out of their way to help someone?” she asks.
I never imagined Hungama would be a classic-Paresh Rawal

Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 1, 2023)
As Hungama clocks 20 years, actor Paresh Rawal reveals that no one in the team envisioned that the comedy will be “fondly remembered till date”. In fact, the veteran actor feels someone must try to remake the hit.
“We had a lot of fun while working on the film, which was very well directed and written by Priyadarshan ji. I had good co-actors, too. But we never imagined that it would turn out to be a classic,” Rawal tells us.
Reminiscing about the days of shooting, the 68-year-old adds, “While working, we did not shoot with the thought that it would turn out to be a hit or would become timeless. We went to the set, gave our 100% and moved on.” Rawal is quick to add that it is the audience that makes a film hit. “It is their love that keeps the story and a film alive in their hearts and minds for 20 years, making it memorable,” he says.
Also starring Akshaye Khanna, Aftab Shivdasani, Rimi Sen and Shoma Anand in prominent roles, the film uses the classic comedy of errors trope. Even now, some clips from the film featuring Rawal and Anand are often spotted as memes on social media.
We ask the actor if he would want to see a remake of Hungama, which is also a remake of Priyadarshan’s 1984 Malayalam film Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, and he replies, “I’m not against the idea of the film being remade again, but it must do justice to the one we made. If the script is good, only then should one attempt to touch and remake it; if not, they should leave it be. Jo already hit hai, usko bigadne ki koi zaroorat nahin hai.”

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s protégé Meezaan on the upside of being stuck at a farm since March 13
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; May 12, 2020)
Jaaved Jaaferi’s son Meezaan is stuck at a friend’s farmhouse outside Mumbai due to the Coronavirus lockdown. He has been there since March 13 and has been spending time with organic farming, indoor games like badminton and table tennis, working out in the in-house gym and brushing up on his guitar and piano skills. “There are a lot of facilities here, so I can’t complain, but I am homesick now. I haven’t seen my family in a really long time,” he sighs.Meanwhile, when they run out of vegetables, they just pluck some tomatoes, cabbage, broccoli and lettuce from the fields. “There is a different kind of joy in eating self-grown vegetables. It’s like a child you nurture. Everyone should try farming once in their lifetime as it teaches you to value things a lot more, after knowing how much effort goes into growing fruits and vegetables,” he points out.
Meezaan made his debut in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s production Malaal last year, opposite the filmmaker’s niece, Sharmin Segal. Next up is Hungama 2, which marks Priyadarshan’s comeback to Hindi films and also features Paresh Rawal and Shilpa Shetty. “It was a new world and I adapted well. We have about 12 days of shoot left and I can’t wait to go back on sets,” he asserts.
Remind him that there will be comparisons with the 2003 original, featuring Akshaye Khanna, Paresh, Rimi Sen and Aftab Shivdasani and he says, “Of course, there will be expectations because it’s a sequel, but ours is a new story and a fresh look at comedy. Priyan sir asked me to have faith in his vision and trust him, which I do because he knows exactly what he wants,” he avers.

Shoma Anand with screen family of Hum Paanch; Vidya Balan (below) had replaced Amita Nangia (3rd from left) as the second daughter
Shoma Anand not keen on comeback but would relent for Hum Paanch
Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 27, 2020)
Hum Paanch, one of Ekta Kapoor’s first productions, is among past TV gems that have returned to prime time during the Coronavirus lockdown. In 2020, the sitcom, featuring a couple (Ashok Saraf and Shoma Anand) and their five fiesty daughters, completes 25 years since its premiere.Shoma is happy that her screen family is celebrating the show’s silver jubilee by bringing joy to people in a difficult time. “It makes me nostalgic about old days and how we looked then,” she says, adding that the cast has been in touch over the years. “This is a family I created for a lifetime, unlike today, where people forget each other right after a project.”
Vidya Balan, who is a successful actress in Hindi films now, was a part of the Hum Paanch family as the nerdy Radhika. Shoma is proud of her screen daughter. “She is always respectful towards us, no matter how successful she became. We talk on birthdays and events,” she gushes.Shoma had herself been a regular fixture on the big screen for decades, with films like Coolie, Himmatwala and Ghar Ek Mandir, among others. But her last prominent project was the 2009 Govinda and Fardeen Khan-starrer Life Partner. Explaining that she took temporary retirement to get away from the hustle, the actress informs, “I spend summers in Kashmir and one time, I didn’t want to come back. There are no characters left in films anyway. It’s either a love story, an action film or special songs and I don’t fit in any of them.”
She was a part of Priyadarshan’s 2003 comedy Hungama and now, the director is returning with a sequel. But Shoma isn’t sure if she was approached. “Maybe they had an offer. I don’t answer most phone calls these days as it is tough to say no to people you worked with,” she reasons. But Hum Paanch sequel would be different. “We’ve been asking the makers for years to bring it back, as viewers won’t forget it even after 50 years.”
Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty are like ‘chaar dhaam’-Ashutosh Rana

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 24, 2019)
Being part of a film that does stupendous business at the box office is a joy. Every actor wants his or her film to be seen by the most number of people and superhits are possible when a film is watched multiple times,” says actor Ashutosh Rana, talking about the success of the Hrithik Roshan-Tiger Shroff-starrer War, which also features him.
Ashutosh proved his mettle way back with Dushman (1999) and Sangharsh (2000). And the movies he has done of late have also given his career a boost. Last year, for instance, he was seen in Simmba, Dhadak and Mulk, besides Sonchiriya this year. The actor feels being part of a film like War has a huge impact on one’s career. “Aditya Chopra’s production house, Karan Johar’s production house and Rohit Shetty are like the chaar dhaam’. As in Hindu religion, even if you visit many famous temples, doing the chaar dhaam yatra is a must. Similarly, being an actor, after having worked with them I feel I am completely a part of the film industry. I have worked with so many other talented filmmakers but having these diggaj (stalwart) filmmakers in my filmography takes it to another level,” he says.
After shooting for Vicky Kaushal-starrer Bhoot, he is now working on Guneet Mongia’s next, Priyadarshan’s Hungama 2, another film with Aditya Chopra’s production house, a Telugu web show, a Kannada film and a web series based on the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Ashutosh is known for his impeccable command over Hindi and says talking in Urdu while playing a historical character was a pleasure for him. “Hum bhaasha ke anugrahi hai, pujari hai. So, whenever I speak in Hindi, Urdu, English, Tamil or Telugu, I try to use the language in a pure form and not use Hindi while speaking English or vice versa. Urdu and Hindi have been spoken in India for years and essentially, we speak Hindustani zubaan. It wasn’t tough to talk in Urdu for the show as the language was not as chaste as it might have been in that era. That’s because the show is set in 1700s but the audience watching it is from 2019, so we have kept that in mind,” he shares.
