Sachin Sanghvi, one half of the composer duo Sachin-Jigar, laments that no one besides playback singers get enough recognition for their work. “If you are a singer-songwriter or composer in Canada who has worked for 30 films or someone who has delivered about 100 songs, every Tom Dick and Harry would know you for your work. But that doesn’t happen in India,” the Tere Vaaste (Zara Hatke Zara Bachke) and Apna Bana Le (Bhediya, 2022) hitmaker tells us
He adds, “I don’t know if, even after such great landmarks, the general awareness about composers is there. I don’t think people even know if Sachin-Jigar are two people.”
This isn’t just the case for composers, adds Sanghvi. “A lot of technicians do not get any sort of recognition. It’s very thankless to be an editor or the background music composer of a film,” says the composer, who has been a music arranger in the past. He feels it’s necessary to talk about it for a change to begin because it’s high time they get their due. He explains, “Songs of so many films that don’t perform well at the box office become chartbusters. So, why shouldn’t the composers, lyricists and technicians get the recognition for it?”
