The signing of the royalty agreement, wherein 25% of the profits collected will be disbursed among artistes registered under the Indian Singers Rights Association (ISRA), is a welcome move, according to singer Rahul Vaidya. He tells us, “It’s great that singers will now get their dues. Singers make decent money from gigs. But, that doesn’t mean they don’t get paid for their services.”

“Most of the time, when singers are called, money is not even a part of the conversation. People try to behave as if they’re doing a favour to the singer. That attitude needs to change,” adds the 35-year-old, while also lending support to composers and lyricists: “If they don’t get royalties, how much can they sustain?”

Of late, another issue that’s plagued the music industry is chaos at concerts. From Sonu Nigam to Arijit Singh, many artistes have been at the receiving end of unruly behaviour. “Such incidents are uncalled for and unpardonable. We aren’t politicians that roam around with guards. There’s going to be no protocol that fans can’t come closer than 10 feet to us. We will be close to our fans. We just need to be careful,” he opines.
