‘You can never predict what is going to be controversial’

One can never be sure how a joke is going to land with the audience. That’s why comedian-actor Vir Das feels instead of worrying about the possibility of stirring controversy, one should give every joke at least one try.

When asked if people have started taking humour too seriously, Das opines, “We now live in a universe where you can never predict what’s going to be controversial. It could be literally anything, be it visual image, a joke or your choice of clothes.”

The 43-year-old shrugs off the idea of making a set with too much caution. “God [only] knows what will offend people. So, if you keep trying to guess what’s going to offend them, you are going to go insane. You’ve got to try using every joke at least once now to see the reaction. And then decide whether to keep it or not. Pehle joke bol toh do,” he adds.

The Delhi Belly (2011) and Shivaay (2016) actor spent all of last year on the road, touring over 25 countries for 183 shows. One of his shows was cancelled in Bengaluru, but the comedian took it in stride and says these things happen:

“It was cancelled because of various organizations getting involved. We had done three shows at the same venue earlier. With the Wanted tour, we sold over 65,000 tickets in India… If you are going to perform for 65,000 people, kabhi kabhi issue toh aayega hi. And it’s fine. You have to deal with all this. For me, this happens once a year.”
