Lata Mangeshkar, who had been hospitalized after contracting Covid-19, passed away at Breach Candy Hospital after multi-organ failure due to sepsis
MID-DAY (February 7, 2022)
"We tried our level best but couldn’t save her,” said Dr P Santhanam, CEO, Breach Candy Hospital, about Lata Mangeshkar, who died of multi-organ failure on Sunday morning. He said Mangeshkar, who was detected positive for Coronavirus and hospitalised in the early hours of January 9, died of multiple organ failure because of sepsis. The legendary singer had spent 28 days in the intensive care unit of the hospital and passed away around 8:12 am.
The 92-year-old melody queen was shifted to the ICU after the doctors found lung involvement because of Covid-19. While she was under aggressive therapy, according to the doctors, her health condition kept fluctuating and she remained in the ICU.
She was on ventilator support and on Saturday became critical as she developed sepsis. “She came as a Covid-19 patient and was treated for the same. She was moved out of the Covid-19 ward. However her age and Covid complications involving her lungs were the deterrent factors. We tried our level best but couldn’t save her,” said Dr Santhanam.
Earlier, in November 2019, Mangeshkar was admitted to the same hospital to treat pneumonia. She then had breathing difficulties and had stayed in the hospital for close to 28 days before being discharged.
