After playing the doting husband in Panga (2020), Punjabi singer-actor Jassie Gill is Bollywood-bound again with Kya Meri Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai? The actor had shot a major chunk of the ZEE5 film in 2019. “We had only four scenes left when the pandemic hit us. It was meant to be a theatrical release, but I am happy that our film is finally reaching the audience,” says Gill.

The romantic comedy is inspired by a 2016 incident when the words ‘Sonam Gupta bewafa hai’ were found written on a 10-rupee note, sparking off a meme fest. The actor remembers shooting for the climax of Panga, when director Ssaurabh Tyagi came for the film’s narration. “Ssaurabh ji bowled me over with his narration style. I knew it was an unusual story and that I had to do it. So far, I have done two films in Hindi — Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi [2018] and Panga. But in this film, I don’t play a Punjabi guy. So, I had a lot of room to learn new things and explore the nuances of a new culture.”

The movie marks veteran Surekha Sikri’s last project before she passed away earlier this year. Gill considers himself blessed to have shared screen space with the senior artiste. “At the time, she was unable to walk and would mostly be in a wheelchair. But every time the camera rolled, she would light up. Her eyes were so expressive. When my song [Aukaat] was released, she even sent me a video of her dancing to it. I wish she were here to attend the premiere with us, but I know her blessings are with us.”
