Kumar Sanu is synonymous with the melodies of the early 1990s. From 1991-1995 he swept all the awards for playback singing, however, he still has one regret. Talking to Bombay Times about it, he shares, “I couldn’t ever win a National Award in my career, and this will always be a regret. There were many hit songs for which I was expecting the award, but I never got one.”

Among his most noted works were songs in films like Aashiqui, Saajan, Phool Aur Kaante, Sadak, Deewana, Damini, and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, to name a few. Talking about the music in the 90s, he says, “It was an amazing phase. There was a lot of emphasis on developing our singing and creativity. Our schedules used to be packed. I’ve done recordings as late as 2.30 am. So, remembering all these things is always pleasant.”

Last year, the singer battled Coronavirus in Mumbai, while his family (wife and two daughters) were in Los Angeles, USA. “I was all alone at that time, but I learnt to be independent, manage things and keep the environment clean. While the pandemic created a lot of fear, it has also taught us many things.” Sanu is currently happy with the philanthropic work that he undertakes. He says, “I have opened three orphanage-schools, which means a lot to me and is close to my heart. I will work hard for it.”

He also has advice for his fans. “Listen to good music. In this fast-paced life, listen to peaceful melodious songs as music is a source that helps you to connect to your soul,” says Sanu.
