MORTAL KOMBAT saw a drop in business in its second weekend in USA with collections of $6.2 million which was 73% down from the previous weekend. The film has a total of $34 million which is decent and should finish at around the $45 million mark. Its a decent result for a film with a limited market and which saw an HBO release on the same day as its theatrical release.

The drop off on second weekend can be due to the HBO release as it has a limited audience as it is and the film is available for home viewing. The film was the second best performing film at the US box office as the Japanese film DEMON SLAYER THE MOVIE: MUGEN TRAIN did a little better with $6.4 million. This film also has a total of $34 million till its second weekend.

DEMON SLAYER THE MOVIE: MUGEN TRAIN also dropped around 70% and again it is for a limited audience and considering the scenario, it has done good business despite the drop off. The wait now is for the next major releases which will come at the end of May with the Sci Fi film A QUIET PLACE PART II and CRUELLA from Disney.

The US market at present is not fully open and without full capacity though 75% capacity is being allowed in some states. The largest chain AMC does have most of its properties open. The story is different in Canada where just 20% of the cinemas are open as they have a slower vaccination drive as compared to the States.
