MAHARASHTRA THEATRES WILL NOT OPEN THIS WEEK; WILL FAST & FURIOUS 9 AND BELLBOTTOM GET AFFECTED?

Last week, we discussed how Hollywood studios in India have decided to release their films even though the key market of Maharashtra is still shut. Mortal Kombat was released on July 30 and today, The Suicide Squad is releasing. The latter is having a day-and-date release, meaning, it releases on the same day in India as in the USA and many other markets. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It will arrive in cinemas next week, on August 13, but the trade was most excited for Fast & Furious 9, which will hit theatres on August 19.

Last Friday, it was announced that the much awaited Akshay Kumar starrer Bellbottom would also release on August 19. A section of trade and exhibitors were concerned with the clash as it could mean that the business would get divided. But the excitement of having two major releases in cinemas overpowered all apprehensions.

The Bellbottom announcement happened a day after Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope indicated that cinemas will be allowed to open in the state in August. However, when the guidelines for August were announced on Monday, August 2, everyone got a grave shock. As per the directives, cinema halls and theatres were not allowed to resume operations in Maharashtra. Everyone feared that Bellbottom would be pushed since Maharashtra contributes a major chunk of business. Thankfully, the makers of Bellbottom launched their trailer at a grand event on Tuesday, August 3.

So will Bellbottom release in theatres in India sans Maharashtra? Sources in the trade and exhibition sector have assured that cinemas would be allowed to reopen in the state between August 12 and August 15. The makers of Bellbottom have been assured of it and this is why, it is said, that the film is releasing on August 19. At the trailer launch of the film, Akshay Kumar hinted that 2 weeks are left for the film to release and that anything can happen in this period.

As for Hollywood, we had reported last week that the studios have decided not to wait for Maharashtra and scheduled their releases. These films would still release regardless of whether or not Maharashtra allows cinemas to reopen. But what if the Maharashtra government does a U-turn and doesn't permit theatres? Will Bellbottom still make it? These questions are unsettling and here’s hoping everyone gets a clear idea by next week.

Cinemas start once again with Mortal Kombat, Mumbai Saga

Cinemas across India will begin to reopen from today (Friday) with MORTAL KOMBAT being the main attraction in the Hindi circuits. This film did a decent $40 million at the box office in the USA when it was released in April. The Hindi releases are awaiting for a decision as to when Maharashtra will be allowed to open and then announce release dates. There are some districts which are going to be allow cinemas to open and the hope is better news over the next week or two which may allow Hindi films to release sometime in August. The main Hindi film playing when cinemas reopen will be MUMBAI SAGA.

Maharashtra is crucial to Hindi cinemas as around 30% of the all India theatrical revenue for Hindi films in 2019 came from Maharashtra. The state has also suffered the most in India from the pandemic which has made the authorities very cautious. So an uptick in cases will push the opening up further down the line.

There have been many states which has been allowing cinemas to open for some time now but the cinemas were just not opening up due to no content. The Salman Khan starrer RADHE was screened officially in some cinemas and unofficially at other places with OTT print being screened. The small video theatres which have limited collections in Gujarat did play the film. The collections of the film would be in the 18-20 lakh nett range with most of this coming from Gujarat and also Rajasthan thanks to Raj Mandir cinema. Over 80% of the earnings is likely to be from these two circuits.

West Bengal despite extending their lockdown will allow cinemas to open which means films will probably be screened from next week as cinemas start opening. This leaves Maharashtra and Bihar as the main markets for Hindi films which are not allowed to open yet. Bihar was expected to open in early July but it did not materialize.

The process is going to be slow and the most important thing is not the turnout but no more lockdowns where cinemas have to close especially in the main contributing states. If this happens then eventually the audiences will return and the industry will be just one blockbuster away from normality or near normality.

MIMI LEAKS ONLINE; FILMS TO FINALLY RELEASE IN CINEMAS FROM FRIDAY, JULY 30!

A lot of films have made their way online since the lockdown started in March 2020. Mimi, which was supposed to release on July 30, seemed like any other digital release. However, in the afternoon of Monday, July 26, media, trade and industry got shock when it came to light that the film leaked on the internet! With no other option, the film’s release was preponed and it came out on Netflix and Jio Cinema on the same day in the evening! Thankfully, the film got glorious reviews from all quarters and it took away a lot of negativity. But this sort of incident scared everyone.

There are reports that Netflix has not taken this breach lightly and has decided to renegotiate the remuneration that it was offering to the producers. Thus, from now on, every producer would remain doubly cautious because a leak could lead to a lesser pay for them from the streaming giants.

Mimi stars Kriti Sanon in the leading role along with Pankaj Tripathi and Sai Tamhankar. It is directed by Laxman Utekar, who last made Luka Chuppi, one of the surprise hits of 2019. The film is a story of a girl aspiring to be an actress who decides to go for surrogacy to earn quick bucks. Almost everyone was unanimous that had this film been released in cinemas, it would have been a huge success. But imagine if Mimi had leaked 4 days before its theatrical release? The damage would have been devastating. With a digital release, Netflix could at least immediately put it out so that as many viewers as possible could view the film legitimately.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros decided last weekend that they’ll start releasing their films in cinemas. Ideally, any studio would want that both the key centres – Mumbai and Delhi – should have cinemas operational and only then it makes sense to release a film. But the government in Maharashtra is going slow with the reopening. Hence, hoping that Mumbai would open up soon is not a great idea. Hence, everyone was hoping that at least the Delhi government would restart theatres since the cases there are negligible. The studios waited a lot and finally, Warner decided that they’ll release some of its films even if Delhi is shut. Thankfully for them, the Delhi government on Saturday, July 24, gave the go-ahead to cinemas to reopen from July 26.

Now only Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are the key markets that are shut. The first film that’ll be released is Mortal Kombat, on Friday, July 30. It did release in India on April 23 but only in South India as the rest of the country was shut. This time it’ll be released in places where it didn’t last time but only in English and Hindi. This would be followed by the release of The Suicide Squad. It is releasing on August 5, the same day as it releases in the USA and other markets. Finally, the horror film The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It will be released on August 13, in Independence Day week.

Today, Universal Pictures announced that Fast & Furious 9 would storm into cinemas on August 19. It is a big film and it’ll, however, make it to the big screen only if Mumbai is open. Hence, the exhibitors are still hoping that the Maharashtra government would understand their grievances and finally give the much needed go ahead.

FAST & FURIOUS 9 IS A SUCCESS IN THE HOME MARKET; ALL EYES NOW ON BLACK WIDOW!

Two weeks back, we spoke about how the box office performance has improved drastically in foreign countries. Numerous Hollywood films, small and big, have been released since March and some of them have emerged to be a big success. The revival began with Godzilla vs. Kong which was released on March 31. Worldwide, it has collected more than $450 million.

Later, Mortal Kombat, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway and Cruella ended up doing decent business. The horror film A Quiet Place Part II emerged as a surprise. It performed as if there’s no pandemic and as of July 5, it has collected a mind-boggling $258 million worldwide. Another horror film that also worked is The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Its worldwide collections are nearly $175 million. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It probably earned less than A Quiet Place Part II as the former’s word of mouth is not that positive and also because it was released simultaneously online, on HBO Max. Yet, it's great the film has collected so much and it's still going strong.

On June 25, the much-awaited film, Fast & Furious 9, released in the USA, Canada, United Kingdom and many major markets. Before, it had already got a release in China, Russia, South Korea, UAE etc from where it had already earned $292.5 million, more than its budget of around $200 million. The film has received mixed reviews and yet, the film is going super strong. In the USA, it collected $122 million till Monday, July 4. The trade experts out there are excited to see which film hits the $150 million mark first – Fast & Furious 9 or A Quiet Place Part II whose earnings stand at $145 million.

In the United Kingdom, it has collected £11 million. As of July 5, it has collected nearly $500 million worldwide. It is the first Hollywood film post-pandemic to do so. The last film to cross this coveted mark was Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker. It was released in December 2019 and had collected $1.07 billion. Fast & Furious 9, however, won’t be able to cross the $1 billion mark, though its predecessors – Fast & Furious 7 and Fast & Furious 8 – had achieved the feat. Fast & Furious 6 had collected $789 million worldwide and that should be the target of Fast & Furious 9.

These are extraordinary collections in times of pandemic and with each passing day, the situation is improving. This Friday, July 9, will see the release of Black Widow, a Marvel film. It also has a tremendous buzz and it remains to be seen if it can go past the collections put up by Fast & Furious 9.

HOLLYWOOD MARKET BACK ON ITS FEET; ALL EYES ON INDIAN BOX OFFICE!

The number of Coronavirus cases has come down considerably in India in the last 40 days. The government in various states has permitted the opening of the economy to an extent. However, due to the possibility of a third wave coupled with insufficient vaccination coverage, there is fear that we might face another outbreak shortly. However, in the long run, things will be better for India, as proved by the performance of countries that have vaccinated a substantial chunk of the population. In the USA, New Zealand, Australia, UAE etc, cases have decreased while vaccination is going great. As a result, its citizens are much more confident to come out. And in these and other countries, the footfalls in cinemas have increased considerably.

The first sign of revival was seen with the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, which was released on March 31, 2021, in the USA and most markets. It was released simultaneously on the digital platform HBO Max. And yet, it had a weekend of $31.6 million. Worldwide, it did a huge business of nearly $443 million. Later, films like Mortal Kombat and Cruella also had a healthy box office run, further proving that the situation is improving. Meanwhile, a Japanese animated film, Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train, also opened well in the USA and other countries.

Then, the much-awaited horror film, A Quiet Place Part II, released in many countries on May 28. Surprisingly, the film had the best weekend post-pandemic in the USA and Canada, collecting $47.4 million. In other words, it collected better than the biggie, Godzilla vs. Kong, on the weekend. This was probably as the confidence of going to cinemas was a little less when Godzilla vs. Kong released two months before. Also, Godzilla vs. Kong was released on HBO Max simultaneously. But A Quiet Place Part II was available only in cinemas. Its weekend earnings led to excitement because these numbers are at par with what the film could have earned pre-pandemic. As of June 21, 2021, A Quiet Place Part II has collected $126.3 million in the United States and Canada, and $96.7 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $223 million.

Lastly, another hyped horror film, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, released on June 4, a week after A Quiet Place Part II. It had a decent weekend of $24 million. Again, like Godzilla vs. Kong, it was available on a streaming platform simultaneously and that must have taken away a chunk of theatrical earnings. Till June 20, it has managed to collect $142.8 million worldwide, which is more than A Quiet Place Part II.

All eyes are now on Fast & Furious 9, which releases almost everywhere tomorrow, on June 25. The series needs no introduction. Its spectacular action scenes make it a must-watch on the big screen. It has already been released in countries like China, Russia, South Korea, UAE etc and has had a great run. It has already earned $292.5 million, more than its budget of around $200 million. Obviously, the collections will get a boost once it releases in the USA, Canada and other countries. It remains to be seen if it can cross the $443 million lifetime collections of Godzilla vs. Kong.

These numbers prove that despite the availability of entertainment options at home, people are desperate to go out and watch films in cinemas, just like in the old times. Hence, even in India, one can expect the box office to get back on track once the Covid-19 threat subsides.

Mortal Kombat drops in second weekend in USA

Box Office India Trade Network

MORTAL KOMBAT saw a drop in business in its second weekend in USA with collections of $6.2 million which was 73% down from the previous weekend. The film has a total of $34 million which is decent and should finish at around the $45 million mark. Its a decent result for a film with a limited market and which saw an HBO release on the same day as its theatrical release.

The drop off on second weekend can be due to the HBO release as it has a limited audience as it is and the film is available for home viewing. The film was the second best performing film at the US box office as the Japanese film DEMON SLAYER THE MOVIE: MUGEN TRAIN did a little better with $6.4 million. This film also has a total of $34 million till its second weekend.

DEMON SLAYER THE MOVIE: MUGEN TRAIN also dropped around 70% and again it is for a limited audience and considering the scenario, it has done good business despite the drop off. The wait now is for the next major releases which will come at the end of May with the Sci Fi film A QUIET PLACE PART II and CRUELLA from Disney.

The US market at present is not fully open and without full capacity though 75% capacity is being allowed in some states. The largest chain AMC does have most of its properties open. The story is different in Canada where just 20% of the cinemas are open as they have a slower vaccination drive as compared to the States.

US box office sees record numbers with Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train

The box office in USA saw its best weekend since the pandemic started as it crossed the $50 million mark for the weekend for the first time in over a year. The cumulative box office for the weekend was $53 million with MORTAL KOMBAT and Japenese film DEMON SLAYER THE MOVIE: MUGEN TRAIN dominating the weekend.

Both these films got numbers which were towards the higher end of expectations but this is expected as general expectations are low due to the pandemic. MORTAL KOMBAT took in a weekend of $22.50 million which is the second best opening weekend after GODZILLA VS. KONG

The Japanese film grossed $19.50 million including previews which made it one of biggest openings in USA for a foreign film. POKEMON: THE FIRST MOVIE is way out on top with $31 million while POKEMON THE MOVIE 2000 is second with $19.60 million and this film will be just behind that film to take third place.

The US market is seemingly back on the mend and with bigger films lined up in the second half of the year, the numbers should be more closer to what they were before the pandemic. The conditions are getting better due to a huge vaccination drive in USA which are stabilizing the Coronavirus cases and people are coming out more. The other country with a huge vaccination drive is UK but there cinemas remain shut but here also cinemas should see good numbers when cinemas open up in mid May depending on the content obviously.

RADHE will see a UK theatre release but will probably miss out on that huge initial EId weekend as cinemas open on the Monday after Eid. But it could see some healthy numbers over the weekdays. A lot will depend on the awareness of the film created by the makers as films have not been releasing in cinemas for over a year.
