The Telugu film RRR directed by the BAAHUBALI director S S Rajamouli has
fetched a record deal of 350 crore as Pen Studios bought the Hindi
theatrical rights and satellite and digital rights in all languages.
This sort of money has never been paid before in history.
The value is around 115 crore for Hindi theatricals and 235 crore for
the digital and satellite rights. Its the theatricals which are
pretty insane as the film will have to do 225 crore nett plus with only
85% of the market as South markets will have their own distributors. The
digital and satellite deal is the safety net as there is a good chance
that the film can sell off for more than 235 crore through the streaming
giants and satellite channels will cut the theatrical value in
terms of coverage.
The film will probably pull off a 750-775 crore recovery pre release as
you can take a minimum 400 crore for the rights of Southern circuits and
Overseas and then there will be music and other rights. The film is due
for a Dusshera release in October and hopefully the scenario with
Coronavirus will be much better by then and pretty normal. But this film
will need Hindi markets to be at an optimum or close to optimum to
release even if South is doing well. A release in a non conductive
scenario will mean a price cut and that clause is probably in the
contracts with Pen Studios.
