Five years ago, R Balki’s Ki & Ka starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Kapoor opened conversations about reversing socially accepted roles played by a man and a woman in a marriage. Arjun, celebrating five years of the film this week, posted a picture of a mangalsutra, which was used for the film’s shoot. “A piece of memorabilia from ki & ka!!! Missing the set and missing the on screen Ki... this film was personal as I chose it for my mom and it’s now even more personal after working with Bebo and Balki sir... I think we need a sequel, what say @kareenakapoorkhan? (sic),” he wrote. His co-star, Kareena, agreed with him and said, “A film that must be made into a sequel... only cause I want to work with @arjunkapoor and Balki once again... (sic).” The actors clearly hinted at a sequel to the movie through their social media conversation.
R Balki, who directed, produced and wrote the film, said, “Ki & Ka is special because it was released around my producer Anil Naidu’s birthday.”
“Anil is no more and I miss his presence in a big way. It’s one of those films that happened organically and fast. Bebo, Arjun, and I had a great time working together. In fact, we have spoken about working together again many times after that,” said Balki.
Elaborating on the possibility of a sequel, the director shared, “I have never made a sequel to any of my films for numerous reasons. Come to think of it, when we made Ki & Ka, we had to explain a lot of things in detail. Today, if I were to make a sequel, it would be simpler to handle, with fewer explanations to offer about the way things are, because a lot has changed around us. Having said that, I don’t have thoughts of making a sequel. Only when Bebo and Arjun were talking to me recently (on the film’s fifth anniversary) did it strike me that there could really be a sequel here. Let’s see! If an idea comes up then, maybe we would think of it.”
When asked what he plans to make next, R Balki, who had directed Akshay Kumar’s Pad Man in 2018, said, “I will be starting my next film in July. I can’t talk about it yet, but I have the details underway. Let’s hope it goes as planned.”
