GODZILLA VS. KONG scored a post pandemic weekend record as the film
collected $32 million overs its three day weekend and $48.50 million
over five days. This is far better than the pre release market
expectations of $30-40 million over five days.
These numbers mean that the major titles in the summer should hold their
release dates as a near $50 million five day total will give enough
confidence. It has to be noted that these numbers have come with a same
day release on HBO max and the film was free for subscribers. There are
films like CRUELLA, FAST & FURIOUS 9 and TOP GUN: MAVERICK due in the
summer.
TENET came in September 2020 and did business of $20.2 million in its
first weekend while WONDER WOMAN 1984 did $16.7 million in December though
there were less cinemas open at that time. The best overall numbers in
the States have probably come with THE CROODS: A NEW AGE which has done
business similar to TENET and more than WONDER WOMAN 1984 despite being
a smaller film.
THE CROODS: A NEW AGE has grossed around $56 million till date and
although GODZILLA VS. KONG will easily surpass, it will have to go well
past the number to be seen as an overall better performance. THE CROODS: A NEW AGE released in November 2020 and collected well through the
peak of the pandemic.
The strong business in the States and China also having a holiday
weekend means the worldwide business should be over $250 million after
the second weekend. The $365 million post pandemic record of TENET is
in sight and if GODZILLA VS. KONG gets there, it would be coming with
practically all of Europe closed.
