Sonam Kapoor married long-time beau Anand Ahuja in a traditional Anand Karaj on Tuesday at her aunt Kavita Singh’s Bandra bungalow. The ceremony started past noon and concluded an hour later. “The bungalow was decorated with mogras. There were candles everywhere and a cloud of fragrance tantalised the senses,” informed a guest. A Brit fragrance house that has previously worked at a royal wedding had made its inroads into Bollywood with this one.

Sonam was a radiant bride in a red Anuradha Vakil lehenga, complemented by pearl and gold jewellery, the eye-catcher being a long Guttapusalu necklace. During the varmala ceremony, when one of the guests asked who would want to go first, she quickly reached for the garland while her ‘babu’, as she fondly calls Anand, was still waiting for his varmala. Earlier, she’d walked to the mandap with brother Harshvardhan and cousin Arjun holding the chaadar over her head.

Sonam’s Veere Di Wedding co-star, Kareena Kapoor who was in London for an event at actor-husband Saif Ali Khan’s alma mater, Winchester College, was among the first guests to arrive, with her nawab and son Taimur. Having made his presence felt, the toddler was quickly sent home with his nanny.

Amitabh Bachchan, with son Abhishek and daughter Shweta, Kiran Rao in a peachy Raw Mango sari with Aamir Khan and son Junaid, Rani Mukerji in a Sabyasachi lehenga and Ranveer Singh in a beige kurta were also there.

Aamir, Ranveer and Rani were greeted with the loudest cheers. Anil and Sunita Kapoor urged guests towards the lavish vegetarian spread while a live band belted out Punjabi and Bollywood tracks.

Ranveer and Arjun crooned “Masakali” to their “loving sister” and the rest hit the dance floor. The guests returned with personalised hampers while Sonam logged into her Twitter account to change her handle to ‘Sonam Kapoor Ahuja.’
