Just weeks after rumours of a wedding intensified, Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli and Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma, who had been dating on and off for the last four years, tied the knot at 2:30 pm at the Borgo Finocchieto, a luxurious villa in the Italian countryside of Tuscany, on December 11. The traditional Hindu ceremony was followed by an evening of dance, dinner and drinks. “Today, we have promised each other to be bound in love forever. We are truly blessed to share the news with you. This beautiful day will be made more special with the love and support of our family of fans and well-wishers. Thank you for being such an important part of our journey,” Virat and Anushka said in a joint statement after the ceremony.
The wedding, which was preceded by a mehendi ceremony on December 10, was a closely guarded affair with over 50 security personnel to ensure privacy. There were only 44 guests in attendance, including Virat’s mother Saroj and sister Bhavna, Anushka’s parents Ajay Kumar and Ashima and brother Karnesh. Also present was Virat’s close friend and long-time business partner, Bunty Sajdeh. Twenty two private villas were booked for the occasion, with the wedding taking place in an 800-year-old vineyard. An insider told Mirror that the 29-year-old bride, who, along with her groom, was dressed in Sabyasachi couture, had always wanted to tie the knot in a vineyard. While the wedding guests were treated to Indian and Italian cuisine, dhol and nagada players as well as Punjabi dancers who had been flown in from Delhi two days before the ceremony, kept them entertained.
Buzz of a December wedding had first gained momentum when Virat pulled out of India’s three-match ODI and three-match T20 matches against Sri Lanka, while Anushka ducked out of her busy acting schedule. They intensified when Anushka’s family pandit, Anand Maharaj, who had officiated a private pooja and the couple’s roka ceremony last year in Rishikesh, accompanied the family on their flight to Milan on December 9. Since the couple had not had an official engagement ceremony, Virat gifted a diamond ring to his new bride on the day of the wedding.

Next up, a grand reception in Delhi is to take place on December 21 and
will be attended by the couple’s close friends from the Capital. “But
the cricketers cannot make it to the celebration because of the ongoing
series so Virat is hosting a bash at a Mumbai five-star on December 26,
where the entire cricket team, including mentor-friend Sachin Tendulkar
and buddy Yuvraj Singh, will be in attendance. The Bollywood brigade is
expected to be represented by Anushka’s former co-stars, Aamir Khan,
Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, filmmaker Karan Johar,
Katrina Kaif and Rani Mukerji, along with Mukesh and Nita Ambani,” a
source close to the development told Mirror.
After the Mumbai reception, Mr and Mrs Kohli will be travelling to South Africa, where the skipper is to start prep for an upcoming series. Anushka will spend New Year’s Eve with her new husband before returning to the Bay in the first week of January to begin the next schedule of the Anand L Rai-directed untitled film co-starring SRK and Kat. She will also start prep for Sui Dhaaga with Varun Dhawan, which kicks off in February. Meanwhile, Virat will be in South Africa for the next two months for the series, which includes three tests, six One Day Internationals and three T20 matches.
Just before the year draws to a close, Anushka, who presently resides in Versova, will move into the couple’s marital home, a sea-facing penthouse in Worli, which they had bought together two years ago.
