On Thursday, Sidharth Malhotra made his singing debut with “Bandook Meri Laila”, a hip-hop party song featuring Haryanvi lyrics, for his upcoming action-comedy, A Gentleman. The 32-yearold actor recorded the peppy track at Shankar Mahadevan’s suburban studio with composer-singer duo Sachin-Jigar. Sidharth, who plays the double role of “susheel Gaurav” and “risky Rishi” in the film, wrapped up the song in three hours. “He was superb, like a professional rapper,” Vayu, who has penned the lyrics, told Mirror, adding, “The song is all about fun and reflects the film’s overall vibe.”

Meanwhile, Jigar reveals that he and Sachin chanced upon Sidharth’s aptitude for rapping while the actor was dubbing for his part. “He has a great baritone which is rare in actors. We asked him what kind of music he likes and he said hip hop. Eminem is his favourite rapper. When we asked him to rap for the track, he immediately said yes. It’s a fun song that goes along the lines of, ‘A gun is like my girlfriend and my girlfriend’s as hot as a gun’, which is in sync with Sid’s character,” Jigar said.

The idea of adding a Haryanvi touch came from the film’s director-duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, who wanted to add ‘masala’ to the track. “They are known for their irreverent style and the song complements it,” says Vayu, who has previously written hits like “Banno Tera Swagger” for Aanand L Rai’s Tanu Weds Manu Returns, the single “Oopar Oopar Renn De” and the Bareilly Ki Barfi track, “Twist Kamariya”, which, he points out, has Haryanvi references too.

With this song Sidharth, joins the long list of actors-turned-singers like Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, who are the most recent entrants. Ranveer, whose rapper turn in Zoya Akhtar Gully Boys, is inspired from the life of city street singers like Divine and Naezy, is belting out multiple tracks for the musicaldrama.

In an interview to Mirror earlier (April 11, 2016), Sidharth had admitted that director Mohit Suri wants him to sing a song in the film and learning to play the guitar was a prerequisite. “This kind of prep is a given today. I have to get rhythm in my voice and fingers,” he had added. When asked if Alia would help him with the prep since she’s already an established playback singer, he had said, “I hope so. And if I can match up to her talent, maybe we could sing a duet. That would be a first for an actor and actress who have debuted together.”

Sidharth Malhotra is learning the guitar and is even expected to sing in Aashiqui 3. But before that, he will debut as a rapper. In his next film, A Gentleman.

Says a source, “Sidharth can rap really well. Directors Raj (Nidimoru) and (Krishna) DK who are close to Sidharth know about his hidden talent and decided to use it for their film.”

An insider reveals, “Sid has done an entire rap portion for Bandook Meri Laila, which is the next song from the film to be launched. He recorded his rap at the studio on Thursday morning.

Sidharth has even shot a two-minute video for it.” The song will be launched in a few days, but it is not in the film. It will just be part of the background score."
