Nana Patekar is set to take
on the titular role in a biopic based on Radhe Shyam Gomla, the man who
freed his native village, Gomla, in Haryana, from the clutches of the
liquor mafia, abysmally low literacy rate and sex ratio, and helped
improve infrastructure with better drainage system and well planned
houses.
The film kicks off in November in Gomla and will be directed by Milind
Ukey who was an assistant to Sanjay Leela Bhansali during Khamoshi
and directed the Shahid Kapoor-starrer Paathshala,
both of which had Nana in significant roles. “One of my assistants was
working on a film in the village when he learnt about Radhe Shyam's
work. He did it all without any grants or help from the government. He
even took on his village's name as his surname,“ Ukey informed Mirror,
adding that since Nana has been working for villages in Maharashtra, he
was perfect for the role.“When I introduced Nana and Radhe Shyam, they
met like long-lost friends and have been constantly in touch.“
While Nana remained unavailable for comment, Radhe Shyam told Mirror, “Before 2005, I was working with a local newspaper. My village was notorious as the hub of the liquor mafia then. There were other problems as well. The film focuses on all this and more.“
