Box Office India Trade Network

There has been a lot of hype recently how actresses like Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone have put the Indian film industry on the map in Hollywood. But its all generally PR excercises and it would definitely have been noticed in the West what THE JUNGLE BOOK has done in India

THE JUNGLE BOOK may not have put the Hindi film industry on the map as that can happen only if the masses in the West take to Indian actors or big Hollywood stars hold the film making and writing talent within India in high regard. What the Jungle Book has done is put the box office potential of India on the map.

The film may have broken all records in India but its not really about that for the West but where the film stands in India as against other markets. THE JUNGLE BOOK will have the fourth highest contribution for its Worldwide business from India and that has never happened for a major Hollywood release. The Indian market is never even a top ten contributor let alone be among the top four. The India business is heading for a gross of $33 million which will be only behind US/Canada, China and UK.

These three are generally the top three contributors for most Hollywood releases and with THE JUNGLE BOOK, India is next best. This is probably due to the fact the film is very Indian like (infact more Indian than local successful films like NEERJA, KAPOOR & SONS and KI & KA) but still to be beating markets like Australia, Germany, France, Brazil, Mexico and Russia for a Hollywood release is a huge achievement for the Indian market.

Note - Mega disasters like BROKEN HORSES have not been included as they probably have India has the highest contributor and although claimed as Hollywood films, in real they are just English films made by Indian filmmakers. There are few others outside BROKEN HORSES also but this one was the only one which had a reasonable budget.
